HEAD COACH Nikola Popovic was named Swope Park Rangers head coach ahead of the 2017 season after serving as an assistant in the club’s inaugural campaign in 2016. Popovic arrived in Kansas City following a stint as an assistant coach with Benfica B in Portugal. A dual citizen of Portugal and Serbia who was born in Belgrade, Popovic began his coaching career in Portugal with CD Olivais e Moscavide in the Segunda Division, initially with an internship in the 2005-06 season where the side won the title and gained promotion to the Segunda Liga, before being hired as an assistant for the following season. After leaving CD Olivais e Moscavide at the conclusion of the 2006-07 season, Popovic headed to FC Vihren Sandanski in the Bulgarian A Football Group as an assistant but returned to Portugal later that same year with Segunda Liga side Varzim SC, where he won the Liga Intercalar. In 2010, the 43-year-old enjoyed a stint as an assistant coach with the Cape Verde National Team, before joining Spanish Segunda Division B side AD Ceuta. Popovic’s next stop was with Al Dahfra in the United Arab Emirates for the 2011-12 season, where he was an assistant to Baltemar Brito – Jose Mourinho’s former assistant coach – winning the Vice President Cup. Popovic earned his first head coaching job the following season, taking charge of Sertanense FC in the Portuguese Second Division. Popovic then joined Qatar’s Aspire Academy in 2014, before returning to Portugal and Benfica B in 2015.
ASSISTANT COACH Paulo Nagamura is in his first season of coaching with the Swope Park Rangers, having announced his retirement from professional soccer at the conclusion of the 2016 MLS season with Sporting Kansas City. Nagamura, 33, enjoyed a 12-year MLS career that saw him win two MLS Cup championships and three Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup titles. He made 269 appearances in MLS, including 240 starts, recording 15 goals and 21 assists. In five seasons with Sporting Kansas City, Nagamura tallied seven goals and eight assists in 119 appearances across all competitions. He played a vital role in some of Sporting Kansas City’s biggest moments in club history, converting penalty kicks in shootouts of the 2012 and 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups as well as the 2013 MLS Cup. A native of Brazil, Nagamura began his youth career with hometown club Sao Paulo FC in 1994 before moving to Arsenal FC of the English Premier League in 2001. He signed for the LA Galaxy in 2005, where he won the MLS Cup and U.S. Open Cup in his first professional season at the senior level.
GOALKEEPER COACH Gavin McInerney is in his first season with the Swope Park Rangers, having joined the club from fellow USL side the Rochester Rhinos ahead of the 2017 season. McInerney served as an assistant and goalkeeper coach for the Rhinos in the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Last season, McInerney oversaw Rochester’s starting goalkeeper Tomas Gomez, who posted the lowest goals against average in the league with 0.55 – earning him the USL Golden Glove award. The 32-year-old was a key member of the Rhinos’ coaching staff as the side claimed the USL Regular-Season Championship and the USL Cup in 2015, setting a league record by conceding just 15 goals in 28 regular-season games and only losing one game all season. Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, McInerney moved to the U.S. to play college soccer at the University of Memphis in 2004 before returning to Ireland after the 2005 NCAA season to sign a professional contract with St. Patrick’s Athletic FC of the League of Ireland. A move to fellow top-flight side Bray Wanderers followed in 2008 before returning to the U.S. in 2009.

NEWS AND NOTES
Belmar Off the Bench The former USL Rookie of the Year, continued to make his presence felt for Swope Park this past weekend. After scoring the game winner off the bench against Vancouver on Wednesday, Kharlton Belmar gave SPR fans déjà vu on Sunday- once again coming off the bench and heading home the only goal of the match. Belmar’s two goals over the past week move his goal tally to 6 on the season.
Dynamic Defense The Rangers defense recorded their fourth straight shutout on Sunday. Led by Didic, Doyle, and Zendejas, Swope Park have given up just 8 goals in 12 games dating back to the beginning of May. SPR continue to average giving up less than one goal per game with a 17 game to 15 goals allowed ratio. Only San Antonio has given up less goals this season in USL, with 8.
Kings of Cascadia
SPR is Streaking Going into the month of June, the Rangers longest shutout streak in club history was 2 games, the unbeaten streak was 7 games, and the regular season winning streak was 4 games. Looking ahead to now, the current Swope Park Rangers squad has shattered all of these records. The Rangers look to extend their 4-game shutout streak, 9-game unbeaten streak, and 6-game winning streak this Thursday at Seattle.
Over the history of the club, especially this season, Swope Park has fared very well in matches vs Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver. The Rangers boast an 8-3 all-time record against teams from the Pacific Northwest, but this season especially has been dominant. With a record of 4-0, SPR have been nearly perfect against Cascadia having only given up one goal.

NEWS AND NOTES
Second Place Within Reach In late May/early June, the Swope Park Rangers faced off in a home and away series with San Antonio FC. The first game resulted in an extremely close 1-0 win for San Antonio and the second in a 0-0 draw. Following those matchups, San Antonio sat comfortably in 2nd place in the western conference with 30 pts, while the Rangers dwelled below the playoff line in 9th with 13 pts. From that point on Swope Park has gone on a tear. SPR is undefeated and won 7 of their last 8, moving within one point of San Antonio. A win at Seattle this Thursday would give Swope Park sole control of second place in the Western Conference.
Selbol Continues Success Nansel Selbol, born and raised in Jos, Nigeria moved to Kansas City in 2014. After joining the SKC academy at the start of the 2015/2016 season and starring for the U18s, Selbol made 22 appearances and started 6 matches for the Rangers in 2016. Another major milestone for Selbol occurred when he debuted for Sporting Kansas City in a CONCACAF Champions League match vs Central FC in October. While last year’s accomplishments were very impressive for a rookie, Selbol is really starting to shine in 2017. Selbol tallied his second assist of the season when he sent in the game winning cross to Kharlton Belmar against Portland on Sunday. In 14 appearances and 11 games started, Selbol also has put the ball in the back of the net 3 times so far in 2017.
Pacific Northwest Sweep? Going into the past week, Swope Park looked to extend their 4-game winning streak and 7-game undefeated streak through the road trip. That of course, is easier said than done. The Rangers had to face off against three teams from the pacific northwest and to make things even more difficult- in just an 8-day span. After taking care of Vancouver and Portland with 1-0 victories, going 3-0 on the road trip seems more than realistic. SPR looks to accomplish this very difficult feat this Thursday at Seattle.
