CHIVAS USA vs SPORTING KANSAS CITY THE HOME DEPOT CENTER, Carson, Calif. 7:30 p.m. PT (PT; KSMO)

March 19, 2011 (WEEK 1; MLS Game 8)

Chivas USA begin 2011 under a new coach in Robin Fraser by playing host to a team with a new name – Sporting Kansas City – who will also be opening a new stadium later this year. REFEREE: Edvin Jurisevic. Chivas finished in eighth place in the Western Conference with 28 points from 30 matches and an 8-18-4 record.  Chivas USA concluded their preseason schedule with a 2-0 loss to FC Dallas last Saturday at Pizza Hut Park. Daniel Hernandez (24) and Ruben Luna (53) scored for FCD. Chivas completed the match a man down after Jimmy Conrad was sent off midway through the second half.  Here’s the Chivas team: Zach Thornton, Heath Pearce, Zarek Valentin, Jimmy Conrad, Ante Jazic, Ben Zemanski, Labrocca, Francisco Mendoza (Mariano Trujillo 76), Marcos Mondaini (Jorge Flores 84), Justin Braun, Alejandro Moreno (Tristan Bowen 76)  During the preseason, Fraser has set about installing a new scheme, including a 4-1-4-1 formation.  “It’s one of those that we figure might be appropriate for this group of players because they have the characteristics and mentality that fits the formation,” Fraser said. “We’ve got a lot possession-oriented midfielders and we want to get ourselves into a position where we can get these guys on the field and dictate the tempo of the game. Also, it’s a formation that allows us to get more of players with power and pace on the field. Just to be clear, it’s not like we’re married to it, but we’re going to continue to tinker and see what works best.”  Rookie Zarek Valentin moved to center back for the preseason finale, after playing much of the preseason at right back.  “It was a good stepping point for us,” he said. “We wanted to prove ourselves after the last game and we made certain strides, but the score line wasn’t the best … we’re definitely getting more confident though.”  Heath Pearce, obtained in the offseason from FC Dallas, filled the right back role and Fraser is looking to the U.S. international for leadership.  “Heath’s been fantastic,” said Fraser. “He’s a great professional with tons of experience and lots of physical ability. He has a lot of understanding of the game. I think he adds a calm to the team that is going to be helpful.”

In the days leading up to the opener, Chivas acquired Nick LaBrocca from Toronto FC in exchange for Alan Gordon. LaBrocca will likely fill the screen midfielder role in front of the back four, a similar position to where he was playing this preseason in Toronto FC’s 4-3-3 scheme. “Anywhere in midfield, I’ll feel like I’ll be able to fit in,” said LaBrocca. “I played in a similar formation in Toronto and I got some good coaching points over there and I’m excited to use those points and apply them to my new team.” Chivas USA come into the opener with a midfield group depleted by injuries. Paulo Nagamura (calf strain), Blair Gavin (hamstring strain) and Mike Lahoud (knee laceration) are all all likely to miss the season opener, and Simon Elliott (knee sprain) is questionable. During the preseason, Chivas USA has struggled to put the ball in the back of the net, failing to score five times in eight contests. Also obtained over the winter was veteran striker Alejandro Moreno, an expansion draft day pickup after he was selected by Vancouver Whitecaps FC from Philadelphia Union. “[Fraser] has spoken to me about … assuming the role of leader in and out of the field to help build a united front,” Moreno said. “What we’ve been instructed is to change the mentality from last year, know that being a team at the middle of the table is unacceptable. We have to do things better each day. We have to find a way to convert losses into draws and draws into wins. Our attitude has to be that of hard work and commitment.” Moreno will join a striking corps that has also seen additions in Ecuadorian newcomer Victor Estupinan, LA Galaxy home grown product Tristan Bowen and Boca Juniors product Marcos Mondaini.

SPORTING KANSAS CITY With a new name, and a new stadium set to open at midseason, Sporting Kansas City are aiming to return to the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2008. As the Wizards a season ago, the club finished third in the Eastern Conference with 39 points from 30 games and an 11-13-6 record.  Sporting concluded their preseason schedule on March 8 with a 2-2 draw against Real Salt Lake in Phoenix. Alvaro Saborio and Fabian Espindola put RSL into a two-goal lead, but Kei Kamara converted from the penalty spot and Omar Bravo scored his first goal in the preseason against live opposition.  Here’s Peter Vermes’ team: Jimmy Nielsen; Roger Espinoza, Matt Besler, Julio Cesar (Shavar Thomas 75), Luke Sassano (Kevin Ellis 46); Stephane Auvray, Davy Arnaud, Milos Stojcev; Omar Bravo, Birahim Diop (C.J. Sapong 65), Kei Kamara.  The match was the first with Brazilian center back Julio César following the completion of his signing, and he is expected to move directly into a leadership at the heart of the back four.  “I’m a little lucky in that I played that position, and I know the nuances of that position,” Vermes said. “Things that you don’t necessarily see when you are watching the game that you really have to pay attention to. He just has those. He also brings a real calmness to the team when he’s out on the field and on the ball.”  The spot alongside Julio César is down to a battle between Shavar Thomas and Matt Besler, but Vermes has mentioned Besler’s efforts over the preseason.  “I realize there is a pretty big opportunity from the fact that Jimmy [Conrad] left a big hole,” Besler said. “Our center backs were scrutinized last season for being one of the main reasons that we didn’t do so well last year. That’s kind of fueled my fire a little bit. I want to prove some of those people wrong.”  SKC also completed a foreign acquisition with the addition of midfielder Milos Stojcev, a Montenegrin who last played in Serbia with FK Borac Čačak.  “Milos is a creative midfielder that can give the final pass and find the back of the net,” Vermes said. “These qualities will be very valuable for us throughout the upcoming season.”  At the top of Vermes’ 4-3-3 scheme, rookie C.J. Sapong has been getting minutes, but finds himself behind central striker Birahim Diop, with Omar Bravo and Kei Kamara filling the wider roles.  “When I first got here, I was so hell-bent on keeping the ball and playing simple,” Sapong said. “But as I kept doing that, the coaches saw that and gave me a little freedom to turn players and not just be another player on the field. Just because I’m a rookie and playing with professional defenders doesn’t mean I need to act like I don’t belong.”  Teal Bunbury, a former No. 1 pick who dislocated his right elbow in February, has been cleared to play and has returned to light training. Bunbury could be available for selection for the season opener, but is not expected to make the 18-man gameday squad.
