SPORTING KANSAS CITY 2018 MLS AWARD FINALISTS
Coach of the Year Peter Vermes
Goal of the Year Jimmy Medranda
Peter Vermes, who was previously an MLS Coach of the Year finalist in 2011 and 2012, is once again up for the annual award alongside Gerardo “Tata” Martino of Atlanta United FC and Bob Bradley of Los Angeles Football Club. Sporting KC went a combined 3-0-0 against Atlanta and LAFC this season with six goals scored and just one allowed from the penalty spot, also shutting out both teams in their home venues. Now in his 10th year as manager, Vermes is the league’s longest tenured manager and he leads all active MLS coaches with eight straight playoff appearances. In May, Vermes signed a contract extension through the 2023 season.
Jimmy Medranda’s wonderstrike from Sporting Kansas City’s 6-0 win over Vancouver Whitecaps FC on April 20 at Children’s Mercy Park is one of 16 finalists for AT&T 2018 MLS Goal of the Year. Medranda, 24, enjoyed a strong start to the 2018 campaign with two goals and one assist in 12 MLS appearances before suffering a season-ending knee injury. Sporting KC was 7-2-3 when the Colombian played in 2018. Medranda is looking to become the second Kansas City player to win an MLS Goal of the Year award after Krisztian Nemeth took home the honor in 2015 for his stunning solo effort in the 83rd minute of a 1-0 victory over the Portland Timbers on Oct. 3rd.
Save of the Year Tim Melia
Tim Melia, the reigning MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, set a career high with 106 saves during a standout 2018 season. Arguably none were better than his full-extension dive to deny Yordy Reyna in the seventh minute of Sporting Kansas City’s 6-0 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps FC on April 20 at Children’s Mercy Park. Melia’s sprawling stop is one of 16 finalists for MLS Save of the Year. Melia, who finished in the top five of last year’s Save of the Year voting, has the fifth best goals against average (1.14) in MLS history among goalkeepers with a minimum of 1,000 minutes played. His 13 shutouts this season were second most in MLS and he led the League with three penalty saves.
SPORTING KANSAS CITY 2018 TEAM AWARD WINNERS Most Valuable Player Ilie Sanchez

Co-Defensive Player of the Year Tim Melia
Offensive Player of the Year Johnny Russell

Sporting KC announced the club’s 2018 team awards on Oct. 12 during Pitch Black, presented by Audi, at Children’s Mercy Park. Votes from Sporting Kansas City players, media members and supporters determined the award winners. For a list of past award winners, visit SportingKC.com/archives.

HOW THE WEST WAS WON: SPORTING KC DEFENSE Tim Melia has stood tall in 2018
Sporting KC’s veteran backline boasts big-game experience
Written By: Sam Kovzan
Written By: Sam Kovzan
It was always going to be hard for Tim Melia to replicate a lightsout 2017 campaign that resulted in MLS Goalkeeper of the Year honors. But one season removed from his crowning individual achievement, the Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper has shown no signs of slowing down.
It’s an adage as old as time, and it pops up in every sport when the playoffs arrive.
The 32-year-old veteran, now in his ninth MLS season and his fourth at Sporting KC, has become a shining example of consistency between the posts as one of Major League Soccer’s premier keepers. A year after being named the best player at his position, Melia has followed up in 2018 with career-highs in wins (18), shutouts (13) and saves (106). His 13 clean sheets are the second-most in MLS and make him one of eight goalkeepers in league history to hit double-digit shutouts in consecutive seasons. Moreover, Melia has been an ever-present fixture for a Sporting KC side that ranks third in scoring defense at 1.18 goals allowed per game. He is the only MLS goalkeeper with at least 10 shutouts, 15 wins and 100 saves this year, having played every minute in all 34 regular season matches. Among players with at least 10 MLS appearances, Melia also ranks fifth in save percentage (72.6%) and second in passing accuracy (77.6%), a clear indication of his comfort with the ball at his feet in Manager Peter Vermes’ possession-oriented system. Perhaps the most impressive skill up Melia’s sleeve is his ability to deny kick takers from the penalty spot. His three saved penalties this year and his six saved penalties since the start of 2017 are both MLS bests. Remarkably enough, Melia has stopped six of the 13 penalties he has faced over the last two seasons. No other goalkeeper has more than four saved penalties during that time. Below is a statistical aggregate of his regular season totals from 2017 and 2018. This body of work shows that any discussion about the league’s best goalkeeper should include Melia. Tim Melia in 2017 and 2018 combined (MLS regular season) Stat Wins Shutouts Goals Against Avg. Saves Penalty Saves Save Percentage Passing Accuracy Minutes Games

Like a slew of other players on the Sporting KC roster, Melia can view the 2018 playoffs as a shot at redemption. He was injured in the late stages of Sporting KC’s knockout round loss at Portland in 2015, a game his team wound up losing on penalties. He kept Seattle off the scoreboard for 88 minutes in the 2016 knockout round, only to concede a goal that should have been disallowed for offside. And in 2017, Melia missed the final four games of Sporting KC’s season, including their knockout round defeat in Houston. Although he enters the Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs seeking his first postseason victory, Melia boasts plenty of big-game experience in win-or-go-home situations. This is the man, after all, who helped propel Sporting KC to Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup titles in 2015 and 2017. Melia is 8-1-2 in the cup competition, with those two draws accounting for a pair of clutch shootout wins. The 2015 Open Cup final against the Philadelphia Union and the 2017 Open Cup semifinal are two of the most memorable moments in Sporting KC history. Melia was the star on each occasion, thwarting the opponent from 12 yards out as Sporting KC secured silverware in dramatic fashion. If given a similar opportunity in the 2018 playoffs, expect Melia to welcome the challenge with open arms and open mitts.
“Defense wins championships.” Such was the case in 2000, when forward-turned-center back Peter Vermes anchored the Kansas City Wizards defense over the course of a season that culminated in an MLS Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup title. Such was the case in 2013, when Sporting KC suffocated opponents en route to another MLS Cup with Vermes as manager. That brings us to the here and now, where Sporting KC enter the Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference. The 2018 campaign will almost certainly be remembered as the year Sporting KC lit up opposing backlines, racking up a slew of scoring records in the process. But when assessing the team’s MLS Cup credentials, it would be foolish not to take stock of the team’s veteran-laden defense. And all things considered—stats, personnel and experience, to name a few—yes, Sporting KC’s back four has all the makings of a championship unit. A battle-tested center back pairing? Check. A steady and ultra-reliable left back? Check. A buccaneering right back as arguably the best two-way player in MLS? Check. Before diving into the sections below, consider this: Sporting KC finished the regular season with 13 shutouts, the second-most in MLS, while their 1.18 goals allowed per game were third-fewest. Not including a wobbly month of March, Sporting KC conceded 31 goals over their final 30 games. And since the start of August, the club has allowed just 10 in their last 13. Indeed, this is a Sporting KC backline that has found its form during the autumn months. Right back revelation Graham Zusi is not among the three 2018 MLS Defender of the Year finalists. And while he won’t lose any sleep over that, Sporting KC fans have plenty of ammunition to suggest the 32-year-old has been erroneously overlooked for the award. An ever-present fixture on Sporting KC’s backline, Zusi contributed to 13 clean sheets (second-most in MLS) as one of just four MLS field players to play in every minute of all 34 games this season. He ranked 11th in MLS in interceptions and placed second among defenders in recoveries. Zusi has also cemented himself as an elite attacking fullback, topping the league in total touches and ranking sixth in successful passes in the final third. He blew away MLS defenders with 67 chances created during the regular season and finished with two goals and seven assists. Zusi has been a revelation at the right back spot since the start of 2017, and he’s a safe bet to feature prominently—defensively and offensively—during the playoffs. Sterling center backs Captain Matt Besler excels with the ball at his feet and in positioning, orchestrating the back line’s every movement. Ike Opara is the reigning MLS Defender of the Year, a physical force capable of corralling the quickest of opposing forwards and bagging goals on set pieces. Besler is one of the best American defenders in the sport, Opara one of the most athletic. With this duo, Sporting KC has a center back partnership crafted for the bright lights of the playoffs. Boasting multiple Open Cup medals and an MLS Cup ring, Besler and Opara have been Vermes’ first-choice pairing over the last two seasons, during which time Sporting KC has a league-low 0.98 goals against average. Sinovic and the Supporting Cast The Kansas City Star’s Sam McDowell wrote in late August about why Seth Sinovic might be Sporting KC’s most unsung hero. “On paper and in the highlight reels, Sinovic has done little to stand out, with the exception of a playoff goal against New England in the 2013 postseason run,” McDowell penned. “He has just one MLS regular season goal to his name. But there is one vital statistic the former college walk-on holds in his corner. Wins.” Three Sporting KC players have appeared in all four cup final victories this decade: Besler, Zusi and—you guessed it—Seth Sinovic. He has a knack for helping his team find success, and this year is no exception. Sporting KC was 12-3-4 (73.7 win percentage) during the regular season when Sinovic started and 6-5-4 (53.3 win percentage) when he didn’t. Sinovic will miss Sporting KC’s playoff opener on a red card suspension, meaning someone else will have to fill the void. Luckily Vermes has a few options. One of which is 18-year-old homegrown full back Jaylin Lindsey, who has impressed in the 10 appearances and nine starts he has made for Sporting KC this season. Alternatively, Yohan Croizet could assume left back responsibilities after performing the role well in the final half-hour of the 2-1 win over LAFC on Decision Day. Vermes might also opt to push Besler to left back and slot Andreu Fontas into central defense. Fontas has plenty of big-game experience from his time in Spain, where he helped FC Barcelona win the 2011 FIFA Club World Cup before becoming a mainstay with Celta Vigo. However Sporting KC approaches it, they will enter the postseason with a savvy defense capable of getting the job done—just as they have for most of the last decade. 9
HOW THE WEST WAS WON: SPORTING KC MIDFIELD Sporting KC’s industrious midfield blends creativity and grit Written By: Sam Kovzan As anyone who follows Major League Soccer is well aware, Manager Peter Vermes and the 4-3-3 formation go together like peas and carrots. Since the turn of the decade, when Vermes began molding Sporting Kansas City into a perennial title contender, his preferred arrangement of players has consisted of a back four, three industrious midfielders and a three-pronged attack consisting of an active center forward and two interchangeable wingers. However, the exact style of Vermes’ 4-3-3 setup has evolved over the last few seasons. During his early tenure, Sporting KC predicated themselves on a stifling high press with midfield destroyers and overlapping fullbacks who delivered cross after cross into the penalty area. The last few seasons have witnessed a shift to a far more polished and possession-oriented approach, rooted philosophically in the classic tiki-taka of Spanish juggernaut FC Barcelona. In carrying out this style of play, arguably no positions are more important than those of the midfield three. And when assessing how well Sporting KC has executed these roles over the course of 2018, just take a look at the Western Conference standings: first place with 18 wins and 62 points, both tied for the most in team history. Sporting KC’s midfield corps features a rich blend of technical quality, tireless grit and more creativity than we’ve seen in recent years. It’s a combination that will give the side confidence heading into the Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs, and one that we will liken to a high-performance locomotive in the space below (sorry if you don’t like metaphors). The Engine It’s no secret that Roger Espinoza has a motor that never stops. The Honduran regularly ranks among the MLS leaders in duels won and tackles won, embodying a certain toughness that Vermes adores. Espinoza has competed at two FIFA World Cups, an Olympics, and competed at the highest level in the English Premier League from 2013-2014. What might casual fans not know about Espinoza? At 32 years young, he’s in the midst of his best season as a professional. In addition to functioning as Sporting KC’s midfield engine, Espinoza has hit MLS career-highs with three goals and nine assists. Those nine assists aren’t an aberration, either: he ranks fifth in MLS with 58 chances created from the run of play and ninth in successful passes in the attacking third. It’s also worth mentioning that Espinoza, unlike fellow Sporting KC veterans Matt Besler, Seth Sinovic and Graham Zusi, has yet to win an MLS Cup. He played in Kansas City from 2008-2012, ventured to England, then returned in 2015. This could be one of the last chances Espinoza has to claim the most coveted prize in MLS. The Conductor There’s a reason Ilie Sanchez was named an MLS All-Star and the team MVP. The 27-year-old Spaniard has expertly fulfilled his long list of duties as Sporting KC’s No. 6. Sitting atop the MLS charts in multiple passing categories while also ranking high in recoveries, Ilie has recorded professional career-highs with four goals and four assists. It’s also impossible to keep Ilie off the pitch. He has played every minute of all 37 matches this season, including the Open Cup. And since he joined Sporting KC at the start of 2017, he has played every minute in 66 of the club’s 67 games across all competitions. He’s clean on the ball, precise in his distribution and tactically disciplined. He is the all-important conduit for Vermes’ team, the on-field overseer of the operation. He is the conductor. The Engineer By definition, the conductor is in charge of the entire train. The engineer specializes in operating the train at maximum performance. We’ll give this role to Chilean international Felipe Gutierrez, who has amassed seven goals and two assists in a solid first MLS season. Gutierrez took the league by storm, scoring five goals in Sporting KC’s first five games to claim MLS Player of the Month honors in March. The 28-year-old suffered a setback when he missed two months with a hernia injury, but he was back to full speed by the start of August. Sporting KC’s record since then? Nine wins, two losses and two draws. Sporting KC is 12-5-3 this season when Gutierrez plays. His impact for the team is evident, and he has the international pedigree to suggest he won’t be fazed by the high stakes of the playoffs. After all, this is a guy who won the 2015 Copa America with Chile a year after competing at the FIFA World Cup. The Safety Valve Frenchman Yohan Croizet boasts a feat that hardly anyone else can claim on the Sporting KC roster. He has played on all three lines in Vermes’ 4-3-3 formation. He has featured as a midfielder, up front on the wing, and in a 2-1 win over LAFC on Decision Day he patrolled the left back spot for the final half-hour. Croizet is Sporting KC’s safety valve, a useful piece capable of filling just about any part of the puzzle. Croizet, who arrived last December from Belgian side KV Mechelen, has started 19 of 34 appearances in all competitions for Sporting KC, tallying five goals and three assists. He has only gotten better as the season has progressed, and his versatility will come in handy if Sporting KC manages a deep postseason run. The Spare Parts What were you doing at the age of 16? Because Gianluca Busio is scoring and assisting goals for Sporting KC. The midfield wunderkind has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign with the first team, playing eight matches in all competitions while becoming the second-youngest player in MLS history to score a goal and record an assist. His impressive cameo in a 4-1 win at Vancouver on Oct. 17 was a prompt reminder that he could still have a part to play during the postseason. What were you doing at the age of 20? Because Wan Kuzain Wan Kamal is also amidst a breakthrough year as another promising Sporting KC Academy product. The homegrown holding midfielder has started five of eight appearances in all competitions, notching a goal and an assist, in addition to shouldering a lead role for the Swope Park Rangers in the USL. Busio and Kuzain are short of big-game experience, but neither would shy away from the opportunity to help Sporting KC when it matters most. 10
HOW THE WEST WAS WON: SPORTING KC ATTACK (1 OF 2) Sporting KC’s deep attacking corps has shredded the club record books Written By: Sam Kovzan The 2018 regular season has prompted a significant rewrite of the Sporting Kansas City record books. Over the course of eight explosive months, a balanced, deep and oftentimes rampant attack has reached all-time highs in goals, assists, goal difference, shots and chances created. Goals have come thick and fast both at Children’s Mercy Park and on the road, making for can’t-miss entertainment while causing many to believe that Sporting KC’s offensive prowess—rather than its staunch defense—will be the main ingredient that propels Manager Peter Vermes’ side throughout the Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs. Wielding an abundance of attacking riches, Sporting KC has ridden the hot hands (or hot boots) of numerous forwards in 2018. Johnny Russell was a buzz saw in April and July. Daniel Salloi heated up in the summer, then caught fire again over the final three games of the season. Diego Rubio was maybe the league’s best player in August, Khiry Shelton boasts a terrific record as a starter, and the likes of Gerso Fernandes and Krisztian Nemeth are capable of coming off the bench and changing a game. Here’s a CliffsNotes summary: Sporting KC has scored a club-record 65 times during the 2018 regular season, spreading the wealth with four different players bagging at least seven goals and nine players bagging at least three. In a stark deviation from previous years, the team has been just as productive away from home as it has at Children’s Mercy Park: their club-record 31 road goals were nine more than in 2016 and 2017 combined. Vermes has described it as “scoring by committee,” and that would be entirely accurate. But as Sporting KC enters the Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs, it’s time to give individual credit where individual credit is due. Let’s dive into the cast of characters who together have forged the best offensive season in the club’s 23-year history. Daniel Salloi: 11 goals, 7 assists in MLS Four years after moving from his native Hungary to join the Sporting KC Academy, Daniel Salloi has secured golden boot honors as the team’s top scorer. The 22-year-old was one of the best young performers in MLS this season, leading all Homegrown Players with 20 combined goals (13) and assists (7) in all competitions. What might come in particular handy during Sporting KC’s postseason push is Salloi’s knack for coming up big in the clutch. He tied a club record with six gamewinning goals in 2018 and became the first Sporting KC player to score a game-winner in three straight games, doing so in victories over Vancouver, FC Dallas and LAFC to close out the year. Johnny Russell: 10 goals, 10 assists in MLS It took next to no time for Johnny Russell to become a fan favorite at Children’s Mercy Park. The 28-year-old winger has endeared himself to supporters with his tireless work rate, undeniable quality on the ball, cordial Scottish brogue and ability to go viral by making a birthday girl’s dream come true. To put Russell’s effectiveness into context, he has become just the fourth player in club history to record double-digit goals and assists in the same MLS season. And while a scintillating April hat-trick against Vancouver served as his coming-out party, Russell has been extremely consistent throughout the year, never going longer than three games without a goal or an assist. Diego Rubio: 8 goals, 6 assists in MLS Diego Rubio perfected the super-sub role during the first half of 2018. Each of his first four goals came from off the bench, a total that remains the best in MLS this season. The Chilean’s ability to enter a match and turn it on its head eventually resulted in a run of starts from July through September, during which time he was one of the league’s hottest players. From July 7 to Sept. 15, Rubio set a club record by scoring or assisting in eight straight MLS matches. His efficiency is evident in his regular season stat line of eight goals and six assists in just 781 minutes of action. The center forward finished tied for second in MLS with 0.92 goals per 90 minutes, a rate matched by Zlatan Ibrahimovic and narrowly bested by Josef Martinez. Gerso Fernandes: 5 goals, 5 assists in MLS “The Gershow” was on full display in a 5-1 victory over the Earthquakes on Sept. 15. Fernandes, Sporting KC’s top scorer in 2017, torched San Jose to the tune of two goals and two assists, becoming the third player in club history to accomplish the feat in an MLS match. The explosion was a reminder of what Fernandes is capable of bringing to the table, and with five goals and five assists to his name this season, he will likely be entrusted to make an impact in the playoffs. Khiry Shelton: 2 goals, 5 assists in MLS Khiry Shelton’s stat line won’t blow you away, but the 25-year-old excels in the statistic that matters the most: winning games. Shelton owns a 9-2-4 record as a starter this season, and it’s a big reason why he has become Vermes’ first-choice center forward going into the playoffs. Shelton has been especially effective playing alongside Salloi and Russell, as the team is 9-1-3 when that trio starts in attack. Shelton’s strength in holding the ball up and willingness to pick out runners has helped bring out the best in his teammates. Krisztian Nemeth: 1 goal, 1 assist in MLS Krisztian Nemeth was a revelation during his first stint with Sporting KC in 2015, racking up 10 goals and 6 assists, before plying his trade elsewhere over the next two and a half years. But an August trade with the New England Revolution brought Nemeth back to Kansas City, where he now has the opportunity to win his second trophy with the team. The Hungarian is likely to feature from off the bench, as he has for most of the last few months, but make no mistake: Nemeth is capable of some crazy, crazy things on the soccer field.

HOW THE WEST WAS WON: SPORTING KC ATTACK (2 OF 2) The numbers behind a record-setting regular season for Sporting KC’s attack Written By: Sam Kovzan In a conference-clinching 2-1 victory over LAFC on Decision Day, Sporting Kansas City put the finishing touches on a record-setting regular season. Roger Espinoza’s long-range masterclass and Daniel Salloi’s clinical game-winner did the trick in a pulsating regular season finale at Children’s Mercy Park, sealing first place in the Western Conference and closing out the regular season campaign with a third straight victory. Below is a statistical look at what became the best attacking season in Sporting KC’s regular season history in 2018. Peter Vermes’ men set team records for goals, away goals, goal difference, assists, shots and chances created while also finishing toward the top of the charts in shots on goal, points and wins.

MLS CUP PLAYOFFS FORMAT Knockout Round Matches - The third seed will play the sixth seed, and the fourth seed will play the fifth seed, in each conference in a singleelimination knockout match, hosted by the higher-seeded clubs. The lower-seeded winners of the knockout matches will advance to the Conference Semifinals and face the first seeded clubs in the conferences. The higher seeded winners from the knockout matches will advance to the Conference Semifinals and face the second seeded clubs in the conferences. Conference Semifinals - The four Conference Semifinals will be decided by a two-game aggregate series, with the lower-seed hosting the first leg of the Conference Semifinal and the higher-seed hosting the second leg of the Conference Semifinal. If the aggregate score is tied at the conclusion of the two-leg series, the away goals tiebreaker rule will apply, where the club with the most away goals scored will be the winner. If, at the conclusion of the second leg, the series remains tied after taking into account the away goals tiebreaker, two 15-minute extra time periods will be played in their entirety. The away goals tiebreaker shall not apply in these two fifteen 15-minute extra time periods. Should the score remain tied after the extra time periods, both teams will take five kicks from the penalty mark (and continuing into sudden death kicks from the penalty mark if still tied at completion of such five kicks) until a winner has been determined. Conference Championships - The two Conference Championships will be decided by a two-game aggregate series, with the lower-seed hosting the first leg of the Conference Championship and the higher-seed hosting the second leg of the Conference Championship. If the aggregate score is tied at the conclusion of the two-match series Conference Championship, the away goals tiebreaker rule will apply. If, at the conclusion of the second leg, the series remains tied after taking into account the away goals tiebreaker, two 15-minute extra time periods will be played in their entirety. The away goals tiebreaker shall not apply in these two 15-minute extra time periods. Should the score remain tied after the extra time periods, both teams will take five kicks from the penalty mark (and continuing into sudden death kicks from the penalty mark if still tied at completion of such five kicks) until a winner has been determined. MLS Cup - MLS Cup will be a single championship match hosted by the finalist with the most MLS Regular Season points. If the two finalists have the same number of MLS Regular Season points, the tiebreaker procedures for Post-Season qualification, MLS Regular Season Tiebreaker, delineated above in the Team-Standings Tie-Breaking Procedures will be applied to determine the host club. Away goals do not count in MLS Cup. If the score is tied at the conclusion of the match, two 15-minute extra time periods will be played in their entirety, followed by five kicks from the penalty
PLAYER SUBSTITUTIONS IN MLS CUP PLAYOFFS One additional substitute (a “fourth substitute”) may be used during the two 15-minute extra time periods. To clarify, a fourth substitution is only permitted if a match goes to extra time. The fourth substitute becomes available to both teams in extra time regardless of the number of substitutions made by the team in regulation.
MLS CUP PLAYOFFS DISCIPLINARY GUIDELINES Yellow card accumulation thresholds are reset entering the MLS Cup Playoffs. • A player who reaches an accumulation threshold in the last 2018 MLS regular season match is eligible for the MLS Cup Playoffs. • A player who receives a red card in his last 2018 MLS regular season match is suspended for the next match for which he is eligible including the MLS Cup Playoffs match or the first regular season match of 2019. • A player sanctioned by the Disciplinary Committee will have any corresponding suspension applied to the next match(es) for which he is eligible including a MLS Cup Playoff match(es) or the next season’s regular season match(es). Once the MLS Cup Playoffs begin and up until MLS Cup (when playoff yellow card accumulation will again reset), a player accumulating two yellow cards will be suspended for the next Cup Playoff match for which he is eligible, except as detailed below (if a player’s club does not advance in the MLS Cup Playoffs, the suspension does not carry over to the 2019 MLS regular season). • A player who accumulates two yellow cards in any of the following matches is suspended for his next match: Knockout Round match, Conference Semifinal Leg 1, Conference Semifinal Leg 2, Conference Championship Leg 1. • A player who earns his second yellow card in the Conference Championship Leg 2 is eligible to play in MLS Cup. A player who earns two yellow cards in the same match is suspended for the next match for which he is eligible including MLS Cup. • If a player earns two yellow cards in the same match, neither yellow card will count against his playoff yellow card accumulation. • If a player earns a yellow card in the Knockout Round match and then two yellow cards in the Conference Semifinal Leg 2, that player would be suspended for the Conference Championship Leg 1 due to the red card/second caution but would remain on one yellow card for his accumulation total. If the player’s club does not advance in the MLS Cup Playoffs, the red card suspension carries over to the 2019 MLS regular season. A player who earns a straight red card in the same match in which he previously has earned his second cumulative yellow card may be suspended for his next two MLS Cup Playoff matches. • For example, a player earns a yellow card in the Knockout Round. He then earns a yellow card (his second cumulatively) in the Conference Semifinal Leg 2 AND a straight red card (different from earning a second yellow card) in the same match. The player is suspended for the Conference Championship Leg 1 due to the red card and is suspended for the Conference Championship Leg 2 due to yellow card accumulation. • However, if a player earns a yellow card in the Conference Semifinal Leg 2 and then earns both a yellow card (his second cumulatively) in the Conference Championship Leg 1 AND a straight red card in the same match, then the player is suspended for the Conference Championship Leg 2 (due to the red card) but is not suspended for MLS Cup as the yellow card accumulation re-sets entering MLS Cup. A player who earns a red card in any MLS Cup Playoff match, whether a straight red card or two yellow cards, is suspended for his next match (if this occurs in MLS Cup, then the suspension carries over to the first regular season match of 2019). A player sanctioned by the Disciplinary Committee will have any corresponding suspension applied to the next match(es) for which he is eligible including any MLS Cup Playoff match(es) or the 2019 MLS regular season. In instances in which a player receives a yellow card in a match and the Disciplinary Committee acts to suspend the player for the offense, the yellow card will not count toward the player’s cumulative yellow card total. 14
