Nicaragua’s only representative in CONCACAF Champions League history, Real Esteli FC have qualified for the regional championship every year since the 2008-09 edition. The team, founded in 1961, won their first of 14 Primera Division titles in 1991 and have become the country’s dominant club for the past decade. The team has won 12 Apertura or Clausura titles since 2002, including each of the last seven league titles.

Rudel Calero, a 30-year-old Nicaragua international who scored in the 2011-12 CONCACAF Champions League, led the league in scoring during the 2012-13 season with 18 goals. His total was five more than the League’s second-highest scorer, teammate Elmer Mejia. The 35-year-old Honduran has more than 100 goals in his career with Real Esteli FC and captains the club.

REAL ESTELI FC IN PRIMERA DIVISIÓN 2013 APERTURA Eight games into the Nicaraguan Primera División’s 2013 Apertura season, Real Esteli FC currently sit in first place with a 7-1-0 record. The club is tied for the league lead with 17 goals scored and has conceded a league low three goals to date this season. Rudel Calero and Joaelton lead the team with four goals. CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE PRIMER The CONCACAF Champions League features the top 24 club teams from across North America, Central America and the Caribbean. The winner of the tournament earns a berth in the 2014 FIFA Club World Cup. The tournament started in 1962 and was originally called the CONCACAF Champions Cup before switching to the current format in 2008. Sporting Kansas City, one of five MLS teams in the tournament, qualified as the 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup champions.

24 TEAMS, 1 CHAMPION The tournament’s 24 teams are separated into eight groups for a round-robin, home-and-away format. The winner of each group advances to the quarterfinals. KEEPING AN EYE ON CAUTION ACCUMULATION “Any player to accumulate two single yellow cards in two different matches in the CCL is suspended for the following game. Thereafter, each time a player accumulates two single yellow cards in two different matches, he will be suspended for the following game with the exception that single cautions will be eliminated at the end of the Quarter Final Round and at the end of the championship stage.” Five Sporting Kansas City players have received cautions through the team’s opening two games in CONCACAF Champions League competition: Seth Sinovic, Aurelien Collin, Mechack Jerome, Paulo Nagamura and Soony Saad. Should any of the above players receive a yellow card during the remaining two group stage games, then the player must serve a mandatory one-game suspension for caution accumulation.

GROUP 2 STANDINGS Looking back at the 2012-13 tournament, the eight quarter finalists averaged 10 points in the group stage. Three teams went 4-0-0 during the opening round (Monterrey, Santos Laguna and Seattle Sounders FC), while Xelaju advanced with seven points (2-1-1), the fewest of any quarterfinal participants. TM

At the end of the four-game Group Stage, the top team from Group 2 will advance to the quarterfinal round. The second and third place teams are eliminated from the tournament. The eight quarter finalists will be ranked 1-8 based on their standings results from the Group Stage and will be paired (1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, 4 vs 5) for a home-and-away series. The top four Group Winners with the best records will host the 2nd leg matches. Should the Group Winners be tied on points, the order of the teams will be determined based on the following tie-breakers (in order): best goal difference, most goals scored, most goals scored away from home, most wins, most away wins, drawing of lots.

GROUP STAGE TIEBREAKERS In the event that teams are tied on points at the end of the Group Stage, the following tie-breaker criteria shall be applied, in order, to determine the Group Winner. 1. Greater number of points earned in matches between the teams concerned 2. Greater goal difference in matches between the teams concerned 3. Greater number of goals scored away from home in matches between the teams concerned 4. Reapply first three criteria if two or more teams are still tied 5. KERRY ZAVAGNIN CONTINUES INTERNATIONAL STREAK Sporting KC assistant coach Kerry Zavagnin has either played (14) or served on the technical staff (5) for every competitive international match in club history. His 14 appearances in competitive international matches from 2000-2008 are the most by a KC player all-time. He became an assistant coach beginning with the 2009 season. He is currently in his 14th consecutive season with the club.

FOUR ON SPORTING KC WITH PRIOR CCL EXPERIENCE Four Sporting Kansas City players have previously participated in the CONCACAF Champions League while with other Major League Soccer clubs. Josh Gardner (LA Galaxy 2006, Columbus Crew 2010-11), Kei Kamara (Houston Dynamo 2008-09, 2009-10), Jacob Peterson (Toronto FC 2010-11) and Paulo Nagamura (Chivas USA 2008-09) each bring experience in the tournament to Sporting Kansas City’s 2013-14 quest for the continental crown.

INTERNATIONAL INTRODUCTION: VERMES AS MANAGER Manager Peter Vermes leads Sporting Kansas City in the club’s first international competition since taking the helm of the club in 2009. Vermes is unbeaten as the Sporting KC coach against international opponents; highlighted by the team’s historic 2-1 win over Manchester United in 2010 and also including draws against Newcastle United (0-0), CD Guadalajara (2-2) and Stoke City (1-1). Vermes missed KC’s 3-0 loss to Montpellier while at the 2012 MLS All-Star Game. As a player, Vermes appeared in nine competitive international matches while with the club from 2000-2002 and helped the team reach the semifinals of the 2002 Champions’ Cup, the club’s best-ever showing on the international stage.

HOMETOWN HERO ADDS INTERNATIONAL PEDIGREE MLS Defender of the Year and All-Star Matt Besler is the only player on Sporting KC’s roster to have played in a competitive international match for the club prior to this year’s CONCACAF Champions League. Besler started all three games during the 2009 North American Superliga as Kansas City went 0-1-2 in the group stage, including a shutout of Mexico’s Atlas.
