LET’S HOPE TIGER COMES BACK By Gary Player, Worldwide Golf Executive Editor since 1999
I
‘VE just returned home to my farm in South Africa after one of the most extensive yet fascinating trips I’ve ever had – and that’s saying something considering my lifetime’s worldwide excursions. Among the countries I visited was Cuba, where I met the son of Fidel Castro. I played golf with him and he was one of the most charming forward-thinking individuals you could imagine. It’s good to see Cuba being embraced by the United States after so much conflict over the years and I think Barak Obama’s recent visit to Havana did a lot of good. The people were happy and friendly and they made me very welcome. Cuba has a lot to offer and I can see why it is gradually becoming a popular tourism destination. I also visited Honduras and then China to look at the site of a course we are doing in Beijing. It will be a super golf course and I’m looking forward to progressing it. I was so pleased to see that Padraig Harrington had won on the European Tour again after an eight year drought. His victory at the Portugal Masters is remarkable, considering it was eight years since he won the US PGA Championship, although he did win the Honda Classic last year on the US PGA Tour. You don’t win three Major championships without having the talent that Padraig has got but he’s never stopped practising and he’s always been one of the most hardworking players in the game. He’s also one of golf’s nicest personalities. With that long-awaited win under his belt Padraig could go on to win many more tournaments.
Taking a break I hear that Justin Rose has announced that he’s taking a break from playing golf for the rest of the year, which means he’ll miss this month’s DP World

Tour Championship, the seasonending final of the European Tour’s Race to Dubai. He’s come close to winning the tournament, which virtually all of the Tour’s top 60 players commit to play, but the leading players earn so much money these days it’s not a problem to take some time off. I didn’t have the choice in my day. I had to play every week regardless, because I needed the money. It was unfortunate that Tiger Woods withdrew from playing in the Safeway Open last month which has led to speculation as to whether he will ever play again, and if he does, whether he will win another Tour event or another Major. He is scheduled to play in his own event in December, the Hero Golf Challenge. If he does play, he faces a monumental task to come back after such a long lay-off but the game needs him and we all hope that he will make his comeback and that he can reproduce the quality of golf that made him the best player in the world. The game of golf will be a better place with Tiger competing on the world stage again. Interest would undoubtedly increase, viewing figures would rise, galleries would swell and it would make a positive effect on the popularity of the sport. I’ve been watching the rise to fame of Andrew Johnston, who’s become something of a cult figure among the galleries. I saw him play at The Open at Royal Troon, where he finished a very good eighth. He’s unconventional to say the least but he can play golf. The game needs players like Andrew, or ‘Beef’ as I should call him, and they love him in the United States. He might be a little zany but he plays golf with a smile on his face and he clearly enjoys competing at the top level. His personality and sense of fun certainly bring a smile to the faces of the spectators and there’s nothing wrong with that. He deserves all the success he’s enjoying right now. n

Rafa joins the winning team at Worldwide Golf
I
n November 1999 we launched the first issue of Worldwide Golf here in the UAE. Golfers in Dubai in those days had the choice of the Emirates Golf Club, the Creek, the sand course at Dubai Country Club, Nad Al Sheba (now Meydan) and Jebel Ali. Golfers in Abu Dhabi had the ‘Airport’ Golf Club and the Golf and Equestrian Club – both sand courses. Since that time Worldwide Golf has grown alongside the game in the region to give our readers an inside the ropes view of what is going on in golf in the region. Our columnists all have connections with area. Legends of the game, Gary Player and Greg Norman have designed some of our great courses; Pete Cowen, coach to the biggest names in the game, has an Academy at Emirates Golf Club and is sponsored by golf in Dubai; David Howell, winner of the 2001 Dubai Desert Classic lives for part of the year in the city, and now we have the pleasure to announce our new team member Rafa Cabrera Bello. Like David he’s won the Dubai Desert Classic and has made Dubai his home. With the balance of columnists we can give you the inside track on what is happening on the European Tour, Senior Tour and Challenge Tour and how they are looking to bolster golf in the Middle East. In this issue we have an exclusive interview with Keith Waters, Chief Operating Officer of the European Tour. The UAE and the Middle East have become a vital sector for their calendar but read on to Page 40 to find out how the Tour is looking to expand worldwide. We catch up with Patrick Reed to discover why the
American Ryder Cup hero likes to travel outside the USA and whether he can take on Rory at the DP World Tour Championship. One thing is for certain and that is that Patrick will bring his ‘shush’ sign to the galleries and lift the atmosphere. Just imagine the noise at the Left Bank by the 17th green at Jumeirah Golf Estates if these two are tied going down the final straight. Another American making an impact in Dubai is golf course architect, Gil Hanse. The Trump International Dubai course is close to opening its doors and judging by the pictures page 76 the region has gained another gem. It’s always fun to catch up with Pete Cowen and for the past 12 months he’s been saying that Padraig Harrington is going to win. I’m a huge Harrington fan but I couldn’t see it happening, mainly down to him losing his confidence on the greens, along with the odd wayward tee shot. But Pete’s first words to me this month were: “Told you!” I was so delighted to be proved wrong. It just goes to show that regardless of age, if you have the belief and the work ethic you can turn things around. Langer did it and now three-times Major winner Padraig, after his win in Portugal, will be teeing it up at the DP World Tour Championship. Another Irishman returning to Jumeriah Golf Estates is Shane Lowry and in this issue he passes on a few tips on how to rip it off the tee – a useful tip for many of the hopefuls on the Earth Course. A few more yards is always welcome.

Jumeirah Golf Estates Home of the DP World Tour Championship
A
S the top 60 players on the European Tour roll into Dubai to compete for the seasonending DP World Tour Championship and the Race to Dubai Bonus Pool, they will be met by a truly worldclass golf course that has steadily matured into one of the finest in the region. The Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates was designed by twotime Open Champion Greg Norman and opened for play in 2009 – the year it first hosted the European Tour’s grand finale. Although it measures a whopping 7,675 yards from the Championship tees, the wide fairways and large putting surfaces make course management just as important as length off the tee. There are no fewer than 102 bunkers waiting to catch errant shots while the undulating greens can result in tricky putts if a ball should catch the wrong slope. Water plays a big part throughout the course and the three closing holes all feature dangerous water hazards, culminating in a meandering wadi which runs up the full length of the 18th hole. n

The man from Munich has a fear of flying and sealed his card thanks to three seventh place finishes in his last six events. He travels between tournaments by car and by boat, and although his schedule is mostly confined to mainland Europe he did play in Britain twice and in Morocco. Fritsch finished 101st on the Race to Dubai, inside the top 111 places which regain their playing rights for the following campaign.

WOOSNAM FINALLY INDUCTED INTO WGHOF
It’s been a long time coming, but Welsh Wizard Ian Woosnam will finally take his place in the World Golf Hall of Fame when he is officially inducted early next year as part of the Class of 2017. The former World No.1 won the Masters in 1991 and led Europe to victory in the 2006 Ryder Cup. Many golfers were critical of the fact that Woosnam hadn’t been acknowledged earlier as a Hall of Famer. The other inductees for 2017 are Davis Love III, Lorena Ochoa, Meg Mallon and the late golf commentator Henry Longhurst.
Researchers at the University of Edinburgh have found that a regular game of golf is likely to increase life expectancy and lead to better physical health. The study, which was led by the World Golf Foundation, claimed that walking 18 holes could amount to between four and eight miles while anyone using a buggy typically walked around four miles. It also found that players burn a minimum of 500 calories during a round. World Golf Foundation CEO Steve Mona said the Golf and Health Project was vital to the development of the sport. “This project is something we can all get behind, as it is universally agreed that golf is good for you,” he said.
IN GEE CHUN WINS LPGA ROOKIE OF THE YEAR AWARD South Korea’s In Gee Chun was the recipient of the Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year on the LPGA Tour after winning her second career Major at the Evian Championship. Chun burst into the limelight last year when she won the US Women’s Open as a non-member of the LPGA Tour.

HOWELL BECOMES THE FIRST CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS IT IS hard to believe it’s more than ten years since Worldwide Golf Columnist David Howell held off Tiger Woods to win the biggest title of his career at the inaugural HSBC Champions in Shanghai. Back in November 2005, the HSBC Champions was the season-opening event for the 2006 European Tour campaign and the Englishman got off to a flying start
with a memorable win. Howell was the only player to fire all four rounds in the 60s as he posted a 20-under-par total to win by three shots from the then dominant player in the game. Earlier that year Woods had won The Masters and The Open, but he was no match for the man from Swindon who was in the form of his life. "This is something

I dreamed of but probably didn't think was going to come true,” admitted Howell after collecting the trophy. "You end up in the last group playing with the World's Number One player and you know it's going to be a big day in your career. "Obviously I am quite pleased with myself; the way I handled myself and was able to come out on top.”

PADRAIG IS ALWAYS A WORTHY WINNER By Pete Cowen, PGA Master Professional
I
’ve been saying for quite a while that Padraig Harrington has been hitting it well enough to win again and for one reason and another it’s just not happened for him. Standing on the driving range with Mike Walker at the Victoria Clube de Golfe on the Monday before the Portugal Masters we both knew this event could be his. I’ve stood on the range now for many years working with the Tour players and I’ve seen it all. But you get a feeling now and again, one you just can’t explain, and Padraig’s win was precisely one of those moments. After winning, the 137th Open Championship and the US PGA Championship back in 2008, many might believe that he’s taken his foot off the gas. You couldn’t be further from the truth if you tried. Padraig, still to this day, is one of the hardest working professionals on Tour and it’s not a rare sight to see him hitting balls on the range long after the light has gone and the other guys have gone back to the hotel.
Happy Gilmore Style This scene was no different in Portugal. We were working late on the range with just a couple of spectators left watching as I had Padraig doing a drill that had them laughing. I got Padraig swinging with the clubface wide open and stepping into it Happy Gilmore style. This wasn’t a drill designed to entertain the two-person crowd but a serious routine to get Padraig to enable his right side to control the initial direction of the ball – and it worked! The course was also perfect for Padraig that week. He could afford to be a little wayward from the tee but, ironically, he was accurate all week until the final hole. He knew what was needed to win and his experience in getting over the finish line took over. The huge positive for Padraig that week wasn’t just the win but just how secure he was over those tricky four foot putts. He’s had the yips for the past three years and to find a way to overcome that mental barrier is a huge relief and testament to his strength of character. He’s proved himself in the game to a point where many players would have eased off but Padraig has always had the belief he could win
and has never taken his foot of the gas when it comes to putting in the hard hours. Now he’s got the bit between his teeth with this victory so don’t be surprised if there’s more to come. He’s not going to be in the running for Ryder Cup Captain as his goal is to play his way onto the 2018 Ryder Cup team. That pretty much sums up the character and drive behind Padraig and what this game means to him.
Future World Number One One of my other players, Thomas Pieters, certainly made his mark on the Ryder Cup this year and looked very confortable in that environment. For me, Thomas is a future World Number One. It’s not a matter of if he will make to the top spot but more a question of when he will make it. This lad has got it all and when Rory McIlroy asked to be paired with him at Hazeltine and both players were happy to play the one ball, well it was a case of greatness joins greatness. Another one of my players who has enjoyed a great 2016 is Danny Willett. He recently withdrew from the British Masters due to tightness in his back. When Danny starts to swing poorly his back is normally the culprit, so looking at his run-in to the end of the season it was a sensible precautionary decision. Since he got back home to Sheffield he’s been on on our driving range in Rotherham and he’s looking good. So fingers crossed he can carry this all the way to the DP World Tour Championship. Last year my winner’s tip, Henrik Stenson, was way off the mark. Henrik was just out on his feet. Jumeirah Golf Estate’s Earth course hands the advantage to any player who hits it long with a high ball flight, as they can take many of the traps out of play. With this in mind Pieters and McIlroy have to be the favourites. Between Mike Walker and myself we work with 20% of the field so, hopefully, we will have a good week. It will be interesting to see how Henrik comes back into form after his break and it will be equally interesting to see how Lee Westwood performs. All Lee needs to do is get it going on the greens – and he could be right up there on Sunday. n

GOLF CAN BE A CRUEL GAME By David Howell, European Tour Professional
A
S the eighth DP World Tour Championship fast approaches at Jumeirah Golf Estates the top 60 players on the European Tour are preparing for the season-ending climax of their year that will determine how much of a success their season has been. Whilst the riches that the top 60 will play for are plain for all to see, not all professional golfers have so much to smile about. A lifetime’s work has gone into everyone’s career and only one month ago the list for the Race to Dubai at the bottom end closed for another year. I was lucky enough to hold onto my ranking by just one shot, one single shot over the course of a year, to keep my playing card to compete on the 2017 European Tour International Schedule. That meant another player, a good friend of mine, missed out by one single shot. It’s a heart-breaking way to earn a living when the cards fall like that, I can tell you. There are no wages for sitting on the bench in our sport, no appearance fees or guaranteed money, it’s a sport that pays purely on performance. At this level, your life’s work is totally in your own hands. You can’t ask for more than that as a sportsman, but it doesn’t make it any easier when things go wrong. Thankfully, there is always a way back.
However, literally one week’s great golf can bounce anyone back into the big time and when age is not so much of a barrier, the biggest challenge is keeping the burning desire to succeed alive. Losing your drive and ambition is the biggest threat to all of us. The poster boy for desire is Padraig Harrington. The 45 year old Dubliner has endured eight years without a European Tour victory. His emotional, passionate win at last month’s Portugal Masters is a reminder of what it means to want to win. Not for the money, nor the ranking, nor anything else. Just to win for winning’s sake. If you were lucky enough to watch the last few holes of the tournament at Victoria Clube de Golfe at Vilamoura, in the Algarve, you will have seen one of the oldest men in the field, with two more Major victories than any other player in the field, showing such intense focus and desire, you could have imagined he was trying to win his first tournament, not his 14th. It was a true sportsman at work, in the heat of battle, nervous as hell that he might not take his chance on the last hole, but equally intent that he will. In the end his will won out – and in some style with a bogey-free 65. That is precisely what we all play professional golf for. The sheer thrill of succeeding when it means so much. Hats off to Padraig. n

he one-month countdown to the 2016 DP World Tour Championship, Dubai was officially marked when H.E. Sheikh Fahim Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Emirates Golf Federation, hit a ceremonial tee shot from the first tee of the Earth course at Jumeirah Golf Estates. The top 60 players on the European Tour’s Race to Dubai rankings will gather at Jumeriah Golf Estates to contest the US$8 million season-ending grand finale from Thursday 17 to Sunday 20 November and His Excellency fired a straight drive of 190 yards, watched on by a group of dignitaries and media, to officially signal the run in to this year’s tournament. Abdulla Bin Damithan, Director of Commercial Department UAE, DP World said: “As an enabler of world trade, a global tournament such as the DP World Tour Championship shows how our business and Dubai can work hand in hand to project
both our brand and the emirate as a leading business, tourism and financial centre. "Dubai is a cosmopolitan city and it is recognised all around the world, so the event definitely puts the emirate on the world stage. Golf is an important sport and we want Dubai to be a destination for all kinds of sports and activities as well as a key centre for trade. What is good for Dubai is good for DP World.” Yousuf Kazim, CEO, Jumeirah Golf Estates, said: “The DP World Tour Championship has been very significant to Jumierah Golf Estates. Since the first tournament in 2009
it has brought a lot of advantages to Dubai. Golf tourism is very prominent in this region – lots of visitors come to Dubai to watch the tournament and last year we recorded the highest attendance which was 65,000 spectators. “Jumeirah Golf Estates, by hosting this championship, has become the destination of choice for many golf players and fans around the world. yder Cup star Rafa Cabrera Bello took some time out from his busy globetrotting schedule to put something back into a game that has given him so much when he delighted children at the Rashid School for Boys in Dubai with a golf lesson. He’s been hitting the heights all season but the 2012 Omega Dubai Desert Classic winner is known as one of the most down to earth
and good-natured players on the European Tour and he proved it by passing on some of his knowledge to the eager schoolchildren during some down time in the emirate as part of the Emirates Golf Federation's Schools Initiative which is being supported by DP World and the European Tour. RIVOLLIER WINS LUCKIEST BALL ON EARTH

aadiyat Beach Golf Club's Blanca Rivollier won the 2016 Luckiest Ball on Earth Series at the Grand Final on the Fire course at Jumeirah Golf Estates on Sunday 25 October and will now enjoy the experience of a lifetime teeing off with one of the stars of the European Tour at this year’s DP World Tour Championship Rolex Pro-Am. Rivollier was in top form as she carded an impressive net Stableford score of 38 points to rise above the 20 other Luckiest Ball on Earth Grand Final competitors. The Rolex Pro-Am is the warm-up to the US$8 million DP World Tour Championship and will be held on Tuesday 15 November and will host 46 teams captained by European Tour professionals including the likes of Henrik Stenson, Danny Willett and defending champion Rory McIlroy. "Winning the DP World Tour Championship's Luckiest Ball on Earth is an experience that I will never forget. I have not
practiced much and I did not expect to come out as the winner. I just wanted to have fun and enjoy the day," said Rivollier. "It's better to go with the flow and savour the moment than have high expectations about the result and then get disappointed. "This is my favourite course and I love playing on it. Overall it was an amazing experience. I look forward to playing with the big names at the Rolex Pro-Am next month!" Rivollier will also get to enjoy the Championship Beach Party held at Nasimi Beach, Atlantis, The Palm on 15 November and will also receive two VIP Hospitality passes to the Championship Chalet for the season-ending tournament at Jumeirah Golf Estates. STEELE FINDS THE SAFEWAY HOME Brendan Steele won the Safeway Open by a single stroke from Patton Kizzire in Napa, California. He closed with a seven-under par 65 that included birdies from three, 17 and eight feet on the final three holes to edge past Kizzire. Kizzire struggled to hit fairways in the last round, and while he dropped only one shot on the 12th, he couldn’t keep Steele from gaining ground.
Justin Thomas shot a bogey-free, 8-under 64 to successfully defend his title by three strokes over Hideki Matsuyama at the CIMB Classic for his second career PGA Tour title. With his final five holes on the third round and his bogey-free 64 on the fourth round, Thomas collected 13 birdies in his final 23 holes of the tournament.

HARRINGTON ENDS EIGHT YEAR DROUGHT Padraig Harrington won the Portugal Masters by one stroke from Andy Sullivan to end a European Tour title drought that has lasted for eight years, 74 days and 115 events. Harrington completed an unblemished final round six-under 65 for a 23 under par winning total after making a crucial par at the last. Sullivan closed with a bogey-free 65 which left him one shot back in second place, while Dane Anders Hansen couldn’t build on a run of three straight birdies on the front nine, carding 12 pars in a row for a 69 and a share of third place with Finland’s Mikko Korhonen.

I
’m delighted to be joining the Worldwide Golf team as a columnist. I’m very fond of the UAE and Dubai has become a ‘second home’ for me. It’s a place I spend a lot of time when I’m not on Tour and of course my victory at the 2012 Omega Dubai Desert Classic was a very special moment – the biggest win of my career so far. So the region will always be very special to me and it’s going to be a lot of fun keeping you up to date with my golfing adventures around the world. It’s been a really good year for me, starting with qualifying for the Masters for the first time, then the Olympics and of course, the Ryder Cup! Hazeltine was probably the best week of my life! I would trade my two European Tour wins for another Ryder Cup loss any day! We went there as friends but we left the tournament with a much stronger bond and it was just an incredible week. We fought as hard as we could and gave our best for the Captain, the team and Europe. Obviously we’re disappointed that we did not win, but individually, I was pleased with the way I performed and how I contributed to the team. As a rookie I can say that the experience mattered more than winning or losing. RAFA AND SERGIO – A BLOSSOMING PARTNERSHIP The partnership with Sergio Garcia was great! He has been a massive asset to Spanish golf and the European Ryder Cup team for the past 15 years at least. Having the chance to play alongside a player as consistent as him made me feel safe on the course – I knew that if I messed up he would have my back. We’re great friends and that connection we have, knowing that we are fighting for Spain and the team, is a really strong one. We’re able to help each other on the course, give a boost when its needed and get the best out of each other. The Olympics was also great, it was the first time golf had been at the event for 112 years and to be able to represent my country was something special. All of the people back home in Spain were watching me play, whether they followed golf or not, so it was a huge honour and also a big responsibility which I took very seriously and with great pride.
I was pleased to be in the fight for the medals right up until the back nine on the Sunday. I can’t say I’m disappointed as the guys who won the medals played really well and deserved them so I’m pleased that I did myself and my country proud. CONSISTENCY A big element of my success this season has been consistency. I read a stat the other day that I haven’t missed a cut on the European Tour for over a year and I think the reason is that I’ve grown as a player in all areas of the game. My putting is consistent, my long game is good and my short game has got better as well. I don’t have any real Achilles heel in my game – everything seems to be pretty tight so I can rely on certain parts of my game to help whichever part isn’t working so well on any given week. I also think that mentally I’m a better player. I’m stronger, I’m more consistent and I understand my game and my emotions better so I can control them and focus my energy in the correct way on the golf course. RECHARGING THE BATTERIES It’s very important to get some rest with such a hectic schedule. I call it the ‘invisible training’ – you feel like you’re doing nothing but actually you are doing something. The body needs rest – even if we were machines we’d still need our maintenance periods – so you need to take your mind off golf for a while, just relax, lie down, do your hobbies and gain some happiness from something besides golf. I enjoy spending time with friends, good weather, going to the beach and surfing – just doing normal stuff. It is as important as training, especially when a difficult end of season period is coming, it’s crucial that you get that little bit of rest so I was pleased to be able to do that in Dubai recently ahead of the important final stretch. During my week long break I visited the Rashid School for Boys to help coach the kids there as part of a programme being run by the Emirates Golf Federation and supported by DP World and the European Tour which is introducing golf to 6,000 local school kids. Just watching the kids

smile made my day! Being able to have the opportunity to witness young kids try the game for the first time and see how they interact with other classmates was great. It reminded me of the values that the kids have; that innocence, genuine happiness and just enjoying the simple things in life, so it was a pleasure to be part of it. It is a great idea to get golf into the physical education programme at schools. The misconception that golf is for old and unathletic people has been blown out of the way. Golf actually takes a good amount of athletic ability and if the school have the grounds to take up the initiative then why not? I am sure that it will benefit the game greatly, especially here in the region. I would advise the kids to keep playing and practice as much as they can; to enjoy the game with their friends. If they really have a passion for it then they should fight for it and not let anyone tell them what they can and cannot do. They should go for their dreams and chase them. I started a little younger than the kids I visited at Rashid School, when I was six years old. My first memories are just going out on the golf course that was beside my home with my dad, my brother and sister, and we would all play and compete for a pin that my dad would give for the winner of each hole. So we would all be proud if we went home with a hat full of pins. When I was a bit older I used to watch videos of Seve Ballesteros and José María Olazábal winning tournaments, especially watching Ollie win the 1994 and 1999 Masters Tournament live – I think that was the main reason why I became a golfer. I also got the chance to visit my sponsors’ Jebel Ali Golf Resort course, which has

recently undergone some renovations, during my week off in Dubai. It’s a really nice ninehole track, and a complete course. It has shots left-to-right and right-to-left, wide and narrow fairways, longer and shorter holes, a bit of an elevation and some water is included too. And with the new irrigation system, the grass on the greens will be in extremely good shape and environmentally friendly. So I’m really looking forward to getting in some more practice there because the facilities are great and they have everything I need to prepare for tournaments. THE FINAL STRETCH It was great to take a little time out ahead of a huge final stretch of the season which will finish back in Dubai at the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates. Ending the season with victory there would obviously be the dream finish – but there are lots of other great players who are also going to be contending. Luckily for all of us players, the events coming up are all big events of significant importance and if you win one of them it will have a big impact on your Race to Dubai ranking. I’ve got myself into a position this season where if I win one of those events I will be contending for the Race to Dubai title. Every event between now and the end of the season is a big one and I’m playing in all of them to give myself the best possible chance. I’m really looking forward to the conclusive period and if I could end the season with victory at the DP World Tour Championship it would be like double icing on the cake for me. KEITH WATERS Worldwide Golf: The past 12 months golf has undergone a number of changes inside and outside the Tour. Is the Tour now well placed to take on the new global challenges ahead? Keith Waters: We are very experienced in running golf tournaments and we will continue to do that as we look to showcase the game in the best possible fashion. We are in the entertainment and content business where golf is our platform, and if we can showcase our game in an entertaining light, then that is the best commercial we can produce to help grow our game and keep it successful in what is an increasingly crowded market. Worldwide Golf: The change in the Membership for the players has become five European Tour tournaments – not including the four Majors and the four World Golf Championships. Has this helped to increase the number of players competing in Tour events? Keith Waters: The European Tour is a unique organisation and we will always endeavour to put our Members – our stars – first and foremost in our minds whilst we look to build upon some of the great tournaments we have established over time. The reason for the change to five European Tour tournaments was to alleviate the problem caused for players who may not necessarily play in all four Majors or all four World Golf Championships events, whereas now, those who do not compete in all eight of those events still have the ability to maintain their membership, which has, in turn, been very successful for the Tour. Worldwide Golf: How well is the Final Series working: by grouping the Turkish Airlines Open, the Nedbank Golf Challenge and the DP World Tour Championship together over three weeks in November with €22 million in prize money – is it attracting the players to compete? Keith Waters: Where we sit right now, the Race to Dubai could produce one of the most thrilling finishes we have ever seen. For us, in terms of scheduling, it has been a year of consolidation for the European Tour and the transitional stage we are moving into now relates to a very different looking 2017 season, which is exciting on all fronts. The Final Series has always been attractive, it’s always been successful in getting the players to play. This year will be no different. We’re expecting strong fields in all three of those tournaments and to be honest, it’s only injuries that tend to stop our players competing because we have world-class golf facilities available to our Members, a large prize fund and an atmosphere that is enjoyable for their families and fans alike. Worldwide Golf: As a former competitive European Tour player do you feel that the game can be speeded up by limiting the time it takes players to play their shot, particularly on the greens, perhaps by making their way to the next tee immediately
after putting out, without introducing different formats? Keith Waters: We have introduced some new regulations this year on the European Tour to monitor players, which has been successful in reducing slow play. In terms of all the arrangements of playing golf in general, the R&A and USGA are looking after the formalities in this area. The European Tour is incredibly supportive of playing more quickly and looking at innovative formats to get more people participating in and watching golf. We have a responsibility to be a leader in this area and to trial these new ideas that can impact the game positively. We have also seen some exciting golf initiatives introduced over the past few months including The Hero Challenge at the British Masters supported by Sky Sports, who committed to broadcasting night golf in prime time coverage. We all witnessed amateurs from the crowd being offered the chance to ‘Beat The Pro’ at the KLM Open in Holland, and we saw the Pressure Putt Showdown return for a second time this year. These are all entertaining events conducted over a short period of time whereby people can engage with the Pros and as these opportunities continue to develop over time, I can’t wait to see what else we can add to the agenda in the future. Worldwide Golf: You still compete at a high level as an amateur when you can but can you see the day coming when you will be playing 9-hole events instead of 18 holes? Keith Waters: For me personally, I enjoy playing 18 holes, but 9 holes is certainly becoming more commonplace. The R&A have an initiative already where there are some 9 hole competitions, and they will qualify for handicap purposes, so they are also encouraging people to play in 9 hole events.

Worldwide Golf: Time seems to be much more precious than it used to be. Do you feel that the average amateur golfer cannot spare the time to play golf after work and seldom at weekends when there are so many demands on his time? Keith Waters: There is certainly more pressure and demands on people today, and there is also a lot of choice available to people who want to play sport. I don’t think it’s just golf that is in this situation because it is a challenge for all sports to grow participation and to keep people interested and involved, whatever the sport may be. Worldwide Golf: While interest in golf is dwindling in countries where golf has been a tradition for many years, yet in countries relatively new to the game it is increasing – has that long been the case? Keith Waters:I would argue that interest in golf isn’t dwindling in these countries, it is just that people are participating in our sport in different ways and playing different forms of golf, whether it be going to a driving range, or trying out some of the new short courses that have been developed. There are plenty of ways to play golf that don’t include playing a full 18 holes. We have always looked to playing our golf tournaments in different countries to help develop and grow the game. Worldwide Golf: The Olympics in Rio attracted huge interest on and off the course in TV viewing figures – and particularly the head-to-head battle between Henrik Stenson and the victorious Justin Rose – but will it have a lasting benefit for the future of the game? Keith Waters: There is no doubt that the return 4

of golf after a 112 year absence was considered a success and something that will be of benefit to our game for the next four years and beyond. Not only did the event itself create interest for new audiences, but the golfing bodies behind those countries are now more interested in developing facilities and taking the game to the schools for their kids. It will take time but we have always believed the Olympic Games would help grow the game and we were delighted with the success it generated in both the men’s and women’s competition. The growth in participation levels is particularly important for the sport and with the level of international exposure that an Olympic Games creates, we hope it brings the ability to reach multiple demographics, cultures and countries. It has helped provide another platform for us to explore golf’s place in the market, and, in a way, it’s a very similar scenario to what we produce week-in -week-out at the European Tour, given our global nature and the fact that we have a presence in 27 countries. Worldwide Golf: It’s been good to see Ras Al Khaimah hosting the penultimate event on the European Challenge Tour with the NBO Golf Classic Grand Final in Oman coming the following week, adding another European event to the UAE and Middle East – how important is the region to the European Tour? Keith Waters: The UAE region has been critically important to the growth of the European Tour over the past 25 years and, in particular, Dubai where we have been fortunate to enjoy a superb relationship since our first visit way back in 1989. Dubai has an ideal climate, fantastic golf courses, great hotels, and we are able to travel there when it’s difficult to play golf in Europe due to weather. It has been a huge addition to the Tour that has contributed considerably to our ongoing success.
Worldwide Golf: The European Challenge Tour has long been the nursery to the European Tour but its success in breeding champions seems to grow year on year – what do you put the success of the Challenge Tour down to? Keith Waters: The Challenge Tour is highly competitive in terms of the players who have lost their cards and the new players who are coming through trying to make their way onto the European Tour. The added bonus for the players is that they are playing four rounds at all tournaments, so they are conditioned and ready to take the next step. Getting used to that lifestyle of playing week-in, week-out, 72 holes, is incredibly important and was the original intention of the Challenge Tour, to replicate what they would experience when playing the European Tour.
Worldwide Golf: Do you feel that the Tour has a bright future ahead and that it is making good progress. Keith Waters: We are trying to make the game more interesting by improving the quality of the content and the entertainment experience for our fans. The European Tour hosts 47 tournaments in 27 different countries. We are working in different cultures, and dealing with different types of business practices to grow the game, which means that with so many new avenues and exciting projects, our future looks different, in a good way, because we want to lead our sport through this exciting period. n
Worldwide Golf: Although the Tour has strengthened its relationship with the Asian Tour it still has strong ties with the other Tours, such as South Africa, Australasia, Japan and Korea – this must take quite some achieving with all the other business the Tour is involved with. Keith Waters: The European Tour now has a shared office in Singapore, which follows our presence in Kuala Lumpur and the recent establishment of offices in Korea and Beijing. The ‘Strategic Alliance’ with the Asian Tour is an extension of our 16-year partnership and our two organisations will work together to create more playing opportunities for our respected memberships. The Asian Tour is just one of the strong golfing relationships we have, as we are a global business we see it as our responsibility to work with many different partners – the Sunshine Tour in South Africa, the Australasian Tour in Australia, the Japanese Golf Tour, the Chinese Golf Association and the Korean PGA – we are the international tour and it is important for us to build the capacity of these countries moving forward to help grow the sport of golf in these developing markets.

atrick Reed, tormentor-in-chief of the European Ryder Cup team, will be back among familiar foe as he makes his second consecutive appearance at the DP World Tour Championship later this month. The American was one of the stars of the show at Hazeltine as he defeated Rory McIlroy in the lead-off singles match, paving the way for the United States to win their first Ryder Cup since 2008 by a score of 17-11. He’ll be welcomed back to Dubai – a place he has fond memories of – and hoping he can get into contention once again. 4

MERICA’S Hazeltine hero was full of praise for Dubai after posting a top ten finish at Jumeirah Golf Estates 12 months ago. “Dubai is awesome,” he said. “It’s an unbelievable place and we had a great time. The skyline is particularly awesome. We were thinking of going up to the ‘Atmosphere’ restaurant in the tallest building – that would have been fun. The only problem was, I’m scared of heights so we’ll have to wait and see.” Away from the dizzy heights of the Burj Khalifa, Reed found the Earth Course at JGE very much to his liking as he posted rounds 70-65-68 to sit three strokes off the lead heading into the final round. Disappointingly, he fell back into a share of tenth place with a final round 73 but he wasn’t too downbeat, knowing he has the capability to win events all around the world, having become something of a global player in the intervening year.
DREAM OF MINE TO PLAY BOTH TOURS “It’s always been a dream of mine to play both Tours,” said Reed earlier this year at the AAM Scottish Open in Inverness. “The first time I actually came over and played in Europe was at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in 2011, and the first round I played was at St. Andrews. It was 72 degrees, sunny with no wind. I was like, ‘Oh, man, this is easy’. “Yet I only shot 1-under par when I expected it to

be a lot different. But come the third day when I played Carnoustie, it was 55 degrees, wind blowing sideways and raining. I got to see true links golf and it was a blast. So I don’t mind if it’s raining. I don’t even mind if it’s windy or cold.”
SIT UP AND TAKE NOTE It shouldn’t be too cold when he tees it up in Dubai and it’s fair to say that Reed has had plenty of bright days out on the golf course in his relatively short professional career. Since joining the paid ranks in 2011 he has won six times on home soil, including a notable win two years ago when he first hit the global headlines with a superb victory at the WGCCadillac Championship in Miami. Not only did he get people talking with his onestroke win over Jamie Donaldson and Bubba Watson – something he said ‘made people sit up and take note.’ He announced himself as a ‘top five player’ in the world, despite having not yet played in a Major and being officially ranked 20th in the world. “I believe in myself and especially considering how hard I’ve worked,” he said, clarifying his comments. “To come out on top in a field like this and to hold on, wire to wire, like that, I feel like I’ve proven myself.” One thing was indisputable about his win: Reed joined Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia and Rory McIlory as the then only current players who have won three or more times on the US 4

PGA Tour before reaching the age of 24. Victory in Florida was his third over an eight month stretch and it saw him qualify for a memorable Ryder Cup debut at Gleneagles later that year. Tom Watson paired him with fellow young Texan Jordan Spieth and the duo worked their magic, earning 2½ points together from three matches. Reed would later defeat Henrik Stenson in the singles and during this match he pulled out his now trademark move to the galleries – putting his index finger to his mouth in a ‘shush’ motion. While it rankled with some in the Scottish crowd, Reed’s outstanding performance was one of few American bright spots during the week as they went down 11½ - 16½.
FIRING THE SHUSH Asked about his match with Stenson, Reed was clearly thrilled about his debut outing. “It was amazing, just to be able to play for your country is something else.” He added: “Watching Henrik make a long putt for birdie, the crowd went absolutely nuts, which I would expect. Then I made one on top of him to halve the hole and I gave the galleries the ‘shush’ sign. “I was doing it all in fun to get the guys going and get everyone going. It was awesome after that. It got the European side really fired up and really roaring and it also got the USA side fired and roaring. It was one of the most fun rounds of golf I’ve ever played.” Despite coming out on the losing side, Reed savoured the atmosphere and he was raring to go

The 26-year-old was the star of the United States side as he led the line in the singles and produced a stunning 1-up victory over Rory McIlroy as the USA romped to a 17-11 victory, avenging their three previous painful defeats. “When I look at it, yeah, we’re playing the Europeans, but at the same time we play golf with these guys every single week,” said Reed after his win over McIlroy. “To be a part of the Ryder Cup, I don’t look at it as just the U.S. team, more as the Ryder Cup family. “I consider everybody in the Ryder Cup, whether it’s the European side, captains, vice captains, U.S. side – it’s one big Ryder Cup family. We want everyone to play well. We want to beat them at their best and they want to beat us at our best. I know it was something fun to be a part of and I’m pretty sure it was fun to watch.” That kind of attitude has seen Reed become one of the most popular players in the game – and his fan base is streadily growing as he continues to share his time on the US PGA Tour and the European Tour. This year he won on his home Tour for the fourth season in succession with his sixth US PGA Tour title at The Barclays in New York – a win which sealed his spot in Davis Love III’s side. What chances a first European Tour victory as he tussles – this time as a lone American – with all 12 of the European Ryder Cup team and a plethora of European Tour stars at the DP World Tour Championship. n

NDIA’s leading lady Aditi Ashok has made giant strides since first picking up a golf club at the tender age of five. The 18-year-old made history by becoming the first Indian golfer to play in the Asian Youth games (2013), the Youth Olympic Games (2014) and the Asian Games (2014) and earlier this year represented her country at Golf’s return to the Olympic Games in Rio, where she was the youngest competitor in the field. Late last year she earned her Ladies European Tour card at Lalla Aicha Tour School with a 23-under-par winning score, which included a course-record 62, at the age of just 17. So far in her rookie season she has posted six top-ten finishes. Worldwide Golf caught up with the youngster ahead of her debut in the Qatar Ladies Open later this month. Q: This is your first season on the Ladies European Tour – which players have you grown close to and how have you adjusted to life on Tour? Aditi Ashok: I’ve adjusted pretty well and that’s probably because I’d played quite a lot of LET events as an amateur. Playing as a pro is quite different and I think I’m getting used to it now. I’ve played quite a few rounds this year paired with Isabelle Boineau so we’ve become quite close. I also know many of the rookies on tour because I’ve played a lot of amateur golf with most of them. Q: You say your parents are the biggest influence on your career – how does having your father (pictured below) as your caddy help you when you’re competing with the best players in the world?
Aditi : Apart from me, he knows my game better than anyone, so having him caddie for me really helps me a lot. In tough situations he can give me some good input because he’s seen me play from a young age, and that’s a big advantage. Q: What would you say is the strongest part of your game and is there anything that you have been working on recently to ensure a strong finish to the season? Aditi : I would say the strongest part of my game is my short game, my putting in particular. I’ve been working on my accuracy with my irons – the more chances I can give myself, the more I’ll be able to score. Q: In between tournaments on Tour, what activities do you do to relax or take your mind off golf? Aditi : I watch a lot of movies, listen to music and sometimes read books. I really like Harry Potter but I can read anything. Q: How are you adjusting to all the travel that comes with being a professional golfer? Aditi : I did travel quite a bit as an amateur but as a pro I’m travelling a lot more, although I’m getting used to it. It’s 4

been good over the last few events with the tournaments being in Asia, so I haven’t had to travel as much as I did when I played in Europe. Q: Would you say that representing India at the Olympics is the highlight of your career so far? Aditi : Yes, that was one of the biggest moments of my career so far and I was top 10 after two days in Rio, so that gave me a really good feeling. Q: How excited are you about playing in the Qatar Ladies Open and have you played at Doha Golf Club or in the Middle East before? Aditi : I’m really excited to be playing at Qatar, because there was just one event in the Middle East and now there are three. I played in the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters in 2014 and finished tied 38th, but I haven’t played at Doha Golf Club. I’ve heard a lot about it so I’m hoping for the best. Q: You set a new course record at Q-School when you earned your playing card for the LET, what tips do you have for handling pressure out on the golf course?
Aditi: Every day we play with the pressure but I always fall back on my routine. It’s something I practice every day warming up so it’s always good to have a sound procedure and follow that throughout my round, particularly with pressure shots and when you’re on the last hole. Q: Who were your golf heroes growing up? Did you watch golf on TV? Aditi : There was a lot of men’s golf but not much women’s golf. It’s slowly getting better but it needs to be a lot better. I have watched a lot of women’s events and my idol was Annika Sorenstam. On the men’s side, I used to like Tiger Woods as well.
Q: Three top ten finishes this year, what do you put that progress down to? Aditi : It’s been good so far. I’m pleased that I’ve been so consistent. I’m trying to get into the top three or win a tournament but I can’t complain. It’s been a good season for me. Q: Women’s golf in India is in its infancy – does it put you under any pressure that you are leading the way for the game in your country? Aditi : I’m well aware that I’m one of the only ones from my country playing out on Tour so I feel I have a big responsibility on my shoulders but I just enjoy my golf and I try to do my best at every tournament I play. n

Quickfire Quotes: Q: Favourite golf course and why? A: My favourite golf course is the Old Course at St. Andrews. I like the fact that it’s traditional and really historic. You don’t get to play a course like that too often, so it’s fun.

MALLET THE bodies of the Oslo and Bergen are milled from 6061 T-6 aluminium on-site in PING’s machine shop where craftsmen oversee every precise detail, including milling of the new TR face technology. I’m happy enough with this finishing position. Up on the right foot into a good, full finish but still in balance.

Now let’s create a controlled backswing by making half a shoulder turn which is around 45 degrees. During this turn your wrists will cock naturally up and your hands will finish in a position somewhere between your chest and abdomen.
To start, let’s get control over the club by gripping down two inches on either your 54/56 degree wedge
As you let the club fall onto the ball, let the body turn naturally pick it up and rotate through the ball. This turn gives you control over the loft without any unnecessary manipulation with the hands and arms. You’ll certainly sense your using the bounce on your wedge rather than the leading edge getting trapped. From here the key is to let the momentum weight of the club fall onto the ball. Let the natural weight of the club falling create the clubhead speed, you don’t have to try and increase the speed. Use this momentum speed and you’ll gain control.
This is an extremely useful shot to perfect and one that will give you lots of confidence when it comes to scoring. We want to create 100% confidence from this distance.

THE MONEY ROLL
W
e’ve all heard it before ‘drive for show and putt for dough’ but what about putt with dough? Using only three one dirham coins stacked on top of each other, I’m going to show a simple way to improve your putting technique and improve the roll of your ball. At the European Tour Performance Institute we have a variety of tools on hand that allow us to accurately measure the putting stroke with great detail. It can actually become quite mind-boggling when
analysing the data because when you break it down, the smallest mistakes in the golfers’ technique and the movement of the putter itself can result in considerable mishits and inconsistencies in the stroke which will result in missed putts. When reviewing what great putters do with their technique, there are many differences in the movement dynamics of the putter due to varied techniques, putter styles and strokes, yet there are also many common traits when looking at the result of the impact between the club and the ball.
GREAT PUTTERS HAVE AN INCREDIBLE ABILITY TO: 1. STRIKE THE BALL IN THE SAME LOCATION OF THE PUTTER EVERY TIME. 2. START THE BALL DOWN THEIR INTENDED TARGET LINE. 3. STRIKE THE BALL IN A MANNER THAT PROMOTES A FORWARD ROLL ON THE BALL AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE.

The ‘Money Roll’ drill is a great exercise that can be used to help promote a faster forward roll of the ball which will allow the ball to retain its starting direction as well as improve your distance control. If you have ever seen the ball bounce or skid during the first couple of feet of the putt there is a strong probability that the ball has either been struck with negative loft on the putter and has been pushed into the turf, or the ball has backspin as it leaves the putter face, yes backspin! If you have experienced this before then I encourage you to try the ‘Money Roll’ putting drill. TO COMPLETE THIS DRILL YOU WILL NEED TO DO THE FOLLOWING: 1. 2. 3.
Stack 3 x 1 dirham coins on top of each other and take your normal putting set up to the coins. Ensure the coins are lined up with the center of the putter face. Make a stroke where your goal is to avoid the coins as you make the through stroke.
This will encourage the putter head to ascend into the ball and create a neutral / top spin action on the ball which is desired. As you can see in the images I have placed a ball next to the coins, please note that this is just to help provide a visual for how to set the drill up. Do not place the ball in the way initially.
ADDRESS
ADVANCED Once you become comfortable with the technique and can avoid the coins, you can then advance the drill by including the ball, to do this make sure the ball is level with the coins and is located in the centre of the putter face at address. The coins will now have moved to the toe or outside of the putter. As a result you should see the ball roll more smoothly off the putter and retain its direction.

GIL HANSE created his first masterpiece on the hallowed turf of the Fife coast when he launched his golf course design company back in 1993 creating Craighead Links at Crail, close to St. Andrews, Scotland, at the Home of Golf. Since then the Cornell University graduate has designed, restored and renovated numerous outstanding golf course across the United States. His design of the golf course in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for the 2016 Olympic Games won universal acclaim from players, specators and the worldwide television audience. Now Hanse is making his mark in the Middle East with his creation of the Trump International Golf Club course in Dubai, which is set to open to the public early in 2017 within the AKOYA by Damac development.

Worldwide Golf: How did you first get involved in golf course design and where and when was the first of your golf course creations situated? Gil Hanse: I graduated with a Masters Degree in Landscape Architecture from Cornell University in the United States and immediately went to work with fellow Cornell graduate Tom Doak. After nearly four years of working with Tom, I decided to form my own company, Hanse Golf Course Design, in 1993. For more than 20 years, my partner Jim Wagner and I have been working in an intentionally small operation, choosing to focus on a limited number of projects and designing in the field. Our first solo golf course was situated in Crail, Scotland, a huge honour for us to build our first course close to St. Andrews at the Home of golf.
WWG: What were the challenges in building a course Dubai? Gil Hanse: Some of the sand storms that we encountered offered up some interesting challenges. We are used to dealing with water erosion during projects where rainfall is encountered, however, at Trump Dubai we allowed the wind to shape some very interesting features. WWG: Can you see Trump International hosting a big event when there are so many outstanding courses in the UAE already taking centre stage on the global schedule? Gil Hanse: We designed the golf course to be capable of handling a big event, both in the layout and challenge of the course, but also in the infrastructural needs. We are hopeful that golfers in the region will find that the course is interesting and fun to play and that will, hopefully, allow the course to gain a reputation among the many outstanding courses in the area. With its history of hosting Major championships, The Trump Organisation will be a great asset in helping to secure these types of tournaments, and then operating them at the highest level.
WWG: With so many excellent and varied golf courses in Dubai and the UAE how difficult has it been to design a course that has a different ‘personality’ than anywhere else in the Emirates? Gil Hanse: With the land plan that had been developed for Akoya, we were excited that Damac and The Trump Organisation allowed us to have enough land to build a course with some ‘core’ elements to it. Having a core to the routing allowed us to create landforms that would stretch from one hole into another and although the landscape was completely created from nothing it feels like it has a different scale than other courses we visited in the UAE. We also decided on a palette of native plants and large-scale sand features to give the course a more rustic appeal than many of its neighbours.
WWG: Has the course been designed to stage a Championship tournament, which may present a daunting challenge to amateurs or have you strategically positioned tee boxes at various distances to accommodate the average club golfer? Gil Hanse: Our belief is that the design of the course should be based on a wide playing corridor where the average golfer can focus on playability and moving the ball through the course.

WWG: You’re not known for creating, ‘signature’ holes – what is the reason for that, and is that the case with this course? Gil Hanse: We prefer to let other people determine which holes they enjoy the most, as opposed to claiming that one particular hole is our “signature” hole. At the end of the day we hope that we have created 18 interesting golf holes that go together well, and create the pace and flow of an entire golf course. If we have done our job, then the post-round conversations about which hole is the favourite should be lively and in the hands of the golfers, instead of the designer.
However, in order to score on the course, the better player is going to have to take into account the angles that will lead to scoring opportunities. In order to get into position to take advantage of the angles, a much higher degree of precision is required. If our courses allow this to occur, and the golfer plays from the appropriate tee boxes, then every level of golfer should enjoy the challenge. WWG: From the time you made your first site visit to Trump International three years or so ago, is the course exactly as you imagined and hoped it would be? Gil Hanse: We are very excited about how the golf course has turned out. With the efforts of golf course superintendent Ben Griffiths and his staff, the grow-in has gone well and the level of maturity in the golf course is wonderful for a course that has not opened yet. However, the true test of the course will be how it plays and we are hopeful that we will have hit our marks on that account as well.
WWG: You have earned the reputation of being a ‘hands on’ course designer and we can remember seeing you behind the wheel of a giant earthmover a couple of years ago. Do you prefer to add your own personal touch in creating exactly what you want with the layout? Gil Hanse: That has always been our philosophy on building golf courses. We believe that the only way to design is to do it in the field, to adapt to the changing conditions and to capitalise on opportunities that present themselves on site, instead of working strictly to a predetermined plan. Over many years of incorporating this philosophy we have also come to the decision that the best way to achieve these goals is to shape the features ourselves as we progress. Golf course architecture is as much art as it is architecture, and if the designer can wield the paint brush as well, we feel that the end result will be better. The added benefit is that it is also a lot of fun!
WWG: Are there any characteristics of the course you particularly like. Gll Hanse: I really like the short holes on the course. As a set, the par 3 holes are very interesting and varied both in design and length. To complete the group I would also throw in the short par 4, 12th as a hole that should be a lot of fun to play. As for the overall features of the course, I think that the large, sandy expanses have evolved into very dramatic hazards and will be the defining features of the course.

The UAE’s oldest golf course The golf club is home to the oldest course in the country after opening its doors to the public in 1976, when the UAE was mainly desert and shrub land – rather than the golfing paradise it is now. But the transformation came in 1998 when the 18-hole sand course, Abu Dhabi Golf & Equestrian Club,was revamped to become the first grass course to grace the UAE capital and renamed Abu Dhabi City Golf Club. Located in the Al Mushrif area in the heart of
the capital, just 10 minutes from the Corniche and the Exhibition Center on Mussafah Road, the tricky nine-hole floodlit course offers affordable golf that many say is the best value for money in the UAE, never mind Abu Dhabi. This was acknowledged at the prestigious Middle East Golf Awards last year when the club was awarded the ‘Best Golf Course of the Year under 500AED’. SENIOR AMATEUR TOUR

OCAL entrepreneur Tom Luig, Founder and CEO of the Global Golf Agency (GGA) has had a busy year. He was a key driving force in staging and promoting last month’s hugely successful inaugural Ras Al Khaimah 2016 Golf Challenge as the emirate made its first foray into professional golf by hosting the penultimate event of the Challenge Tour season. Now, the likeable German has launched his own Senior Amateur Tour in the region. Worldwide Golf caught up with Luig to get the lowdown on his involvement with golf in the UAE. Worldwide Golf: Let’s talk about your Senior Amateur Tour, where did the idea come from and how does it work? Tom Luig: The idea was already born this year after I played a social round with some of the Montgomerie, Dubai’s senior members. We were sitting together with the club’s Vice Captain Masoud Sobati afterwards and started talking about how great it would be if there was a local amateur series just for the over 50s. I spoke to lots of other boys and I know at the Emirates Golf Club and they were very keen to have their own tour. So in June we started to bring in sponsors and put the whole thing together. We are aiming to make it a fun and relaxed experience – we didn’t want it to be like an ordinary Corporate Golf Day. We approached the local clubs and they said that they would love to host an event, so we prepared the schedule and on October 16 we played the first event at the Montgomerie. We had more than 50 sign-ups when we first launched, and the
registration for the tour is close to 100 already. So now there will be an event approximately every week and the final will be in early May next year with some great prizes to offer. WWG: How many events are there on the tour in total? TL: Currently we have nine events plus two surprises with our partners that the boys do not know about yet. Two special invitation events in the UAE that are not mentioned in the schedule as we want them to be a nice surprise! WWG: When people register do they sign up for the whole Tour? TL: Yes, they do sign-up for the entire tour and they get a lovely welcome package. They then can decide on what events they want to play depending how much time they have. The final will be held back at the Montgomerie, Dubai. WWG: Which sponsors are involved in the tour? TL: We have partners like Mercedes, Alpha Golf, Jebel Ali Resort, Alpha Golf, Reverie Group, Icflix. We have some small partners who take care of the pricings and David Golf, TaylorMade, Nike Golf, Voss Water. WWG: There is a pretty good prize for the winners, tell us about that. TL: The winners of the A, B and C divisions will go to Thracian Cliffs Golf & Beach Resort in Bulgaria. I was there myself recently – it’s a fantastic place. They will be flown there for four nights and they’ll play some enjoyable golf and have a great time. For second and third place we have fantastic prizes as well. I’m sure it will be great.

WWG: You were also involved in the Ras Al Khaimah 2016 Golf Challenge, how did that come about and what’s your involvement in the tournament? TL: It was huge step from Haitham Mattar, the CEO of the Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority, to take the risk in setting up a European Challenge Tour event. He came to me in the summer of 2015 and brought the idea to the table. We had two meetings and found out that we could work together and started to set up the tournament. We wanted it to be run like a big event with things like a TV
package including a 46-minute highlight show broadcasted worldwide. We wanted to have a really toap class set up which we managed to achieve. I need to mention Nick Tarratt, the Director of the European Tour’s Dubai office, who has been so supportive. I would not have been able to achieve what I did without his help. I called him and annoyed him every day with all kinds of questions and he just had all the answers. We all came together last year with a plan and the was put into motion so we’re delighted with the outcome. ■

WWG: Overall, what can guests expect when they come to this season’s Picnic Brunch? l Zorah Golf Club was the first new golf club in the UAE for six years when it opened last December. There’s no doubt that the course has been a welcome addition to the region’s golf scene while the club’s innovative marketing strategy has proved just as much of a hit. Worldwide Golf’s Scott Grayston headed down to Al Zorah GC to speak to Sales and Marketing Manager, Darren King, to find out the secret behind the club’s success.
Worldwide Golf: It’s bee one year since the club opened, how is business? Darren King: Business is thriving, especially from the local market and I’m delighted with the great start we’ve made. Naturally, you go through the honeymoon period when you first open a golf course where everybody is intrigued to try it out. The great thing is that people are coming back for more because they enjoyed the experience so much. Golfers in the region have warmly welcomed our affordable rate strategy
because they’re getting value for money with their golf at Al Zorah. Whoever has played the course has commented on how fantastic it is from a playability point of view because it’s open, friendly and contains par 5s that are reachable in two. The condition of the course is the aspect that people appreciate the most though. From a numbers point of view, we are ticking all the boxes and we’re looking to finish the year strongly with a vast amount of international golfers coming to play here.

WWG: You’ve been remarkably active on social media, talk us through your marketing strategy. DK: During the pre-opening phase we identified that social media was going to be a key component to the success of the club. Historically, lots of the golf clubs have relied on print media for all the right reasons with Worldwide Golf being a great channel to help the success of the clubs. That’s still true of course but we felt you needed to go one step further and keep up with the times through social media. We identified that videography was going to be a way we could differentiate ourselves from our competitors and it’s really grown. We invested significantly into the equipment and started off with a Match Play series in January between our former golf professionals Martin Dewhurst and Jack Ronan and the feedback was nothing but positive. The videos showcase the course as well as offering a light, entertaining battle. Now we are inviting people like General Managers and Directors of Golf to come up and play me, which is quite easy for them with my skills! It’s just a bit of light-hearted fun to give across the welcoming mood of the club in an engaging manner for the viewer. From a Troon perspective, the three-hole challenges are almost setting a benchmark for the other Troon properties around the world to follow in our footsteps. WWG: Which have been your most successful videos? DK: It depends who you ask! Tom Rourke from Meydan would believe it’s his three-hole challenge because he made three birdies in a row and then Chris Brown from The Els Club would back his video as the biggest success because his 200 yard 6-iron shot on the ninth, which is the toughest hole on the course, landed within a few feet, so that was brilliant. I’ve interviewed the General Manager of The Ajman Palace, Ferghal Purcell, and that was fascinating finding out about the peacenegotiations talks with Nelson Mandela, his experience of hosting the G8 summit at his property in Northern Ireland, as well as meeting Barack Obama. I find all the videos a success because of the feedback we are getting so we hope to continue flourishing in this area. WWG: With so many courses in the region, and with this course being in Ajman – which actually isn’t very far from Dubai at all, do you feel that there’s a need to think outside the box with your promotion to make the club stand out? DK: In all our communication we highlight that

Certainly those that are living in the UAE that are used to playing courses like Al Badia and Dubai Creek, we are less than half an hour away from those facilities. We recently did a video where we left the Els Club and drove to Ajman’s only course and it took less than 40 minutes so that proves the proximity of the journey. Once you have come down to play, you will be surprised about how easy and quick it is to get here. WWG: Getting them here in the first place may have been a challenge but once people have played this course, they all fall in love with it. What do you think are the reasons are for this? DK: We have been blessed with the environment we have been given and the landscape. To have a million square metres of mangroves on the course is phenomenal and the tidal system makes the course different every time you play it. If the tide is in you have tee boxes that are surrounded by water, which is very unique for this region. Players might not have had a birdie for a couple of months but you get chances on this fun course so that is an aspect that people
enjoy. We are fortunate that Nicklaus Design have done such a great job at creating this escape that seems so paradoxical to the hectic life of Dubai or Abu Dhabi. We have an amazing product here that is only going to get better. WWG: Which holes are your favourites? DK: The finishing holes here are my favourite (16,17,18) and they are up there with the best. They are not only stunning but they can present some challenges depending on the elements and they are so much fun. They are always talked about by players after their rounds so that is pleasing. WWG: Why should people visit Al Zorah Golf Club if they haven’t already? DK: It’s the most recent addition to the portfolio of golf courses in the UAE and is designed by Nicklaus Design as well as being managed by Troon so the quality is up there with the best. We feel it is a golf course that you can’t help but enjoy and is different from the majority of courses in this region so is certainly worth the trip. ■

Companies and clubs associated with golf in the region are being invited take part against one another in a fun, yet undoubtedly competitive, series which will throw up some valuable networking opportunities and, most importantly of all, a few laughs. Best of all – the competition is free to enter! “I just thought it was a fantastic way to use our corporate membership to its full potential, and to get the golf industry together while using our products in a social and fun environment throughout the season,” says Charlie Simpson, Regional Sales Manager of Luxury Carts Arabia (pictured right). “The heart of our industry is the game of golf and the winter is a busy time for us all so we want to give something back to our friends in the industry, it will be a bit of fun and something we can see building over the years to come. competition will no doubt be fierce which will be great fun and we in the Luxury Carts Arabia office are really looking forward to it.” The Luxury Carts Golf Industry League will run over three rounds at Dubai Golf’s three courses in the UAE – the Majlis, the Faldo (where night golf will be the order of the day) and Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club. The format for the three rounds will be a Betterball Stableford with ¾ handicap allowance, and each club or organisation will have two players representing them. The final will be a shotgun competition with all 24 clubs playing, which will be a Texas Scramble, while the winning team will be awarded the prize of a weekend holiday. There will be a point system in place for the top six teams in the league who will gain an advantage going into the final – with first place gaining six points, down to sixth place who will gain one point. Round 1 will be played from November 1 to December 31st, 2016; Round 2 from January 1 to February 28, 2017; and Round 3 from March 1 to April 20. The final will be played on April 25.

Aart Lehmkuhl’s 82 trumped all his fellow members to win the gross title in the Audi Medal. First place in Category A (Handicap 0-12) was presented to Ian Haywood who finished his round with a solid 73 net to take the spoils by two. ABU DHABI LADIES TEAM OFF TO A FLYER The Abu Dhabi Ladies Team recorded a fantastic home victory against Abu Dhabi City Golf Club, Dubai Creek Golf Club and Emirates Golf Club in the fiercely contested Ladies Inter Club Challenge. Abu Dhabi took full advantage of playing at home scoring a massive 251 points which

With the Nepalese Golf Society, which consists of Namir Al Naimi and Mukti Rai, might have ended as runnerups but their teamwork shone through as they recorded six net birdies and one net eagle. The win saw Bird take home 100 points in the newly-formed ‘Player of the Year’ competition which sees competitors rewarded for their season performances against par. Fifty points is awarded for a level par 72 round with an additional 10 points collected for each subsequent shot under. In the Gross Division Mike Dunn shot an 83 to win by three from Rita Engelbrecht with Callum Bird in third place.

Sang Deog Kim carded a solid 71 over the Al Hamra links to give himself the opportunity to win one of the biggest amateur prizes in UAE golf – a place in the Pro-Am for the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates. Kim laid the foundations for his win in the Al Hamra qualifier on the front nine, reaching the turn in 4-under-par to give himself some breathing space. He then closed out a two-stroke win over Wilma Fernandes to take the spoils.
The regular partnership of Tony Stroud and Alan McNamara clinched the final event of the summer season recently as they combined to shoot a net 69 and win by just 0.2 shots ahead of Mike Dunn and David Thomas. Both pairs shot identical gross scores of 74, but after their handicaps were taken off Stroud and McNamara were left smiling with the victory. Finishing in third place with a score of 70.8 was Tim and Callum Bird.

AYLA OASIS GOLF COURSE AYLA OPENS IN STYLE Friday 30th September was a momentous day as it saw the soft opening event of Ayla’s first grass golf course in Jordan, nestled down on the shores of Aqaba. The 18 hole Stableford format saw a field of 70 participants from many parts of the world challenge for the first accolades to be bestowed upon the fresh turf laid before them. Division A (0-14 Hcp) was a closely competed contest, one secured by Michael Hoover with 29 points, edging both Beeman Hishmat and Omar Thabit by a single point. Beeman took second place with a better back nine score of 14 points to 12. Division B (15-28 Hcp) saw an incredible display of golf from Ali Shahin Jnr who carded 41 points, leaving the rest behind in the wasteland dust to battle for consolation places. Second and third places both finished on 29 points, carded by Robert Clapper and Saa’d Ahed Hijjawi respectively. The Ladies Division title was secured by Kwon Changsup and our ‘Best Placed Jordanian National’ attained by Mohammed Hane, both with notable scores of 28 points.

Alan Bassnet topped Division A with a score of Net 69, but it was a day that could have been much better for the 8 handicapper as a double bogey at the last dashed hopes of a 2 under par back nine. Runner-up with net 70 was the ever present Claes Byberg. Division B winner Neil Flanigan managed the lowest score of the day with Net 67 – the 12 handicapper managed birdies at 6, 12, 15 and 16 in an impressive round. Division C was won by Hiroaiki Oishi’s nett 72and the Ladies’ division champion was Yunhee Lee with Net 69.
Linus Byberg emerged as Division A winner in September’s Primepower Medal with a score of net 73, ending both nines with birdies in a solid start to the season. Simon Elliott was unlucky to miss out on the top spot as he finished runner-up by a single stroke. Frank Mathiesen took Division B with a net 79 and Peter McManus’ Net 74 proved enough to clinch Division C The Ladies’ Division was a tight contest with Teresa Gow beating Beth San Jose on countback.

The winner of the Luckiest Ball On Earth qualifier by the slimmest of margins was Richard Ellis with a net score of 69. Despite a slow start, a gross birdie on his sixth hole kick-started an extremely steady round with a strong finish to pick up the qualifying spot for The Luckiest Ball On Earth Grand Final. Richard also picked up the Division B Runners up title with 39 points. Best Gross was won by Christofer Rahm with a superb 72. Simon Earl defeated Chris Alderman on a countback to seal Division A and Asheque Mainuddin clinched Division B after a three-card playoff. Harini White was in a superb form to be triumphant in the Ladies Divison.
The UAE Ladies Team made up of Reema Al Heloo, Hamada Al Suwaidi, and Tara Al Marzooqi finished in fourth with a team score of 521 in the Junior and Ladies Arab Golf Championship at Palm Hills Golf Course as Morocco captured four gold medals. Leading the way in the Individual Category for the UAE Ladies was Reema Al Heloo with rounds of 87-84-89 for an event total of 260. Junior teams also competed in the event as UAE fielded an Under 18 squad and an Under 15 team with eight different countries competing altogether in Egypt. The UAE U18 team was made up of Mohamed Al Hajeri, Saeed Al Balooshi, and Mohammed Abdulla Saeed. The boys finished in seventh place with a
score of 523. Mohamed Al Hajeri led the way with rounds of 87-82-87 for a total of 256. The UAE U15 team was made up of Rashid Al Emadi, Obaid Al Heloo, and Khalid Al Mutawa. The team came seventh with a score of 564. The top player for the UAE was Rashid Al Emadi with rounds of 95-89-89 for a total of 273.

Charmaine Bruwer narrowly beat Emma Rooms in a countback for first place with both competitors finishing with 34 points. In the Men’s category, Alan Whatling was victorious with an impressive 39 points and was closely followed by Giovanni Galeppini who finished runner-up with 37 points. Fittingly, Austrian, Markus Hacker won the Oktoberfest Rivoli Monthly Medal event with a 76 after one shot separated first from fourth. Hacker beat out Eddie Ramage in a countback to claim victory. Adele McKelvey’s 74 helped her get crowned Ladies Gross champion. Paul Baxter prevailed in the B Division and Mike Henderson won by a stroke over Ian Stuart in the top Division. In the Ladies Net Division, Nicky Breeze shot one of her best rounds ever (Net 67) to win.
Saleh Al Ameri won the Luckiest Ball on Earth Qualifier with a brilliant score of 38 points from his handicap of 10. Saleh, a UAE National and past Captain of ADCGC, had two gross birdies to boost his score, claiming first place and winning his way into the LBOE Grand Final.
Following on from the huge success of the free junior golf week, ADCGC went one step further and ran free classes for ladies to come and try golf. Over 120 attended, most of whom were brand new to golf and they all thoroughly enjoyed an hour’s coaching with two of the club’s PGA Professionals. Due to the huge demand, ADCGC will be running extra classes to accommodate over 100 ladies who were unable to get into the first week.

SHIBA SAVOURS SOFITEL LADIES TRIUMPH Shiba Wahid stormed to a four-shot victory in September’s Sofitel Ladies Monthly Medal after an outstanding round of 67 - four under her course handicap. Glory Xavier picked up from where she left off in May, as she claimed the Division A prize with a fine round of level par, whilst in Division B Sandra Anderson was awarded with the top prize after a solid round of 73 - two over her course handicap.
HERB CLINCHES BARCLAYS SUMMER SERIES CREEK SHOW FULL FORCE AT CLASH OF THE TITANS Dubai Creek enjoyed a convincing title-defence in the biannual Clash of the Titans event as five out of the ten Dubai Creek teams managed to break the 40-point mark with a superb final winning total of 387 points over Emirates Golf Club’s 371. This win saw Dubai Creek edge into a 7-3 lead ahead of the next event in the series.
EGF member Alan McNamara claimed top honours in the final round of the 2016 Barclays Summer Series after a superb score of 38 points and Andrew Somlak was the gross winner on the day with 32 points. However, the order of merit for the series was separated by only three points and it was Michael Herb that came out on top over the 180 competitors. McNamara came second and Rajinder Razdan was third after a consistently solid summer.

THE addition of the new 5* Hotel Camiral is earning the resort the reputation as one of Europe’s finest golfing destinations. Less Challenging Alternative The Tour Course provides a less challenging alternative. Set amid pine trees and lakes, the 6,562 yards (6,000 metres), par 72 layout is shorter and more forgiving than the Stadium Course and most holes have wider fairways. However, the layout is by no means a walkover, as hopefuls of the European Tour Q-School Final Stage can testify. To gain full enjoyment, this unique course encourages players to use all their skills and their complete set of clubs. You’d be forgiven for thinking that you’d landed in 19th century Spain, such is the prevalence of Spanish colonial architecture. It’s also the predominant language spoken by the majority of Equatorial Guinea’s 1.2 million population –
a remnant of almost 200 years of Spanish rule. Malabo highlights include the Arena Blanca beach with its array of sports activities and wonderful nature trails, where scores of butterflies can be found during the dry-season, and the Monte Alen National Park with its tropical rainforest which is home to elephants, chimpanzees and gorillas. Mongomo, where the 3e Actuaries Open is played, is situated in the Wele-Nzas Province on the far eastern border of the mainland, just 1km west of neighbouring Gabon’s Woleu-Ntem Province. The city hosted the African Cup of Nations football tournament last year and is quietly emerging as a sporting centre for West Africa.

The par-72 Presidential Golf Course, host venue of the 3e Actuaries Open, is one of three golf courses in Equatorial Guinea and it’s def initely a case of ‘quality rather than quantity’ as this is a track of top-class international standard. Beautif ully manicured greens and highly playable, rolling fairways make this Ritson Golf Design course a joy to play for golfers of all abilities, while a standout feature sees half of it is set within the Equatorial Forest, creating a truly unique golf ing experience. Former Dubai Creek Open winner Luke Joy, who played in the 3e Actuaries Open for the f irst time last year said: “It’s a fantastic design – really good holes, a solid f inish, and great f un to play while also being a solid test of golf. It is a course near my home in South Africa. We played the South African Open and The Presidents Cup there. It was a course where Tiger Woods and myself made those putts in the dark! It is a great golf course; it is an inland links with a modern feel. It features great holes that come from Gary Player’s terrific imagination.
It is where I won my first US Open in 1994. The greens are unbelievably tough. It used to be a tree-lined golf course but now they have taken a lot of trees and reverted it back to its original design. It almost looks like an inland links with bunkers all over the place.
