Smith Snow AC 2017-18

Page 1

Every day at Smith we wake up and set out to enable the world’s best riders by creating the world’s most innovative products. But we can’t get there alone. Through a highly collaborative process with our top athletes, Smith designers create products engineered to meet and exceed the demands of professional snowboarding and skiing.

The Athlete Collection is where we go beyond amazing performance and bring to life the individual personality and creativity of our top athletes. The process depends on a deep commitment from the athlete to help develop color and art that is an expression of their own. Further, they chose the ChromaPop™ lens tints that best fit the specific conditions they’ll be out in during the upcoming season, so they have optimized vision to ride at their highest level. The end result is a product that’s truly from the athlete, for the athlete.

Bobby Brown | I/O 7 Propelled into the limelight by earning double gold at X Games a few years ago, Bobby continues to push the levels of freeskiing. Hailing from Denver, Bobby wanted to bring expressive art and color, reflective of the mountains he loves and his new found passion for surfing, to the forefront of his AC goggle. As he brings his signature slopestyle and big air tricks to the backcountry, he wants his creativity to be the common thread. He picked a ChromaPop™ Sun Green Mirror lens to complete the look for when he’s lapping the park on his home mountain of Breckenridge.

Sage Cattabriga-Alosa | I/O 7 INCLUDED LENSES

ChromaPop™ Sun Green Mirror

ChromaPop™ Storm Rose Flash

Sage has been putting together jaw-dropping segments for TGR for the last 15 years, helping shape the progression of modern freeskiing. On a recon flight to find new zones in Alaska last winter, Sage snapped a photo out of the prop-plane’s window of a glacial flow below him. It’s this photo that Sage and Smith designers worked with to create the art for his AC goggle. Glaciers aren’t just his inspiration, but also his motivation for picking the ChromaPop™ Everyday Red Mirror lens for maximum light reflection when he’s out in the severe Alaska terrain.

Josh Dirksen | I/O 7 A legend of snowboarding, Josh has reinvented his career from filming game-changing segments to one of the most soulful freeriders. For his first Smith AC goggle, he wanted to link up with another hometown Bend, Oregon local, friend, and go-toSmith-artist, Adam Haynes. Adam and Josh can be found on skin track excursions into the Oregon backcountry. Adam painted a backcountry scene familiar to both of them and their excursions chasing each other up skin tracks in the Oregon backcountry. For lens tints, Josh wanted ChromaPop™ tints as low-key as he is, Sun Black and Storm Rose Flash.

ChromaPop™ Storm Rose Flash

Freeskier Markus Eder came up as a ski racer in the Italian Alps before discovering freeskiing and breaking onto the global scene. Markus worked with Canadian artist Derek Muscat to draw-up a mountain scene, inspired by the Alps but bringing in some skate-style line-work of a brain, symbolizing his obsession for the mountains and his mental approach to skiing. Markus wanted to complement his black and white art and be prepared for sunny days in the Tirol region with a ChromaPop™ Sun Black.

Angel Collinson | I/O

Austin Smith | I/O Austin is a true individual who’s found success in snowboarding by going his own route and focusing on self-started projects like Drink Water and the seminal movie, Pathology. An extension of this DIY motivation, Austin draws his sponsor logos on his board versus the expected use of stickers, each logo hand drawn and unique every time he draws them. Austin came into the Smith office and drew his own version of the Smith logo, which designers scanned and made ready for his goggle strap. And just like Austin is known for the unexpected, his goggle has an unexpected digital camo pattern on the inside.

Angel Collinson was blessed to grow up at the end of Little Cottonwood Canyon at the base of Snowbird. She’s turned her upbringing at the base of the resort into becoming the rowdiest, most progressive women’s big mountain skier out there. She’s not just the best women’s skier, but her award for Best Line of the Year in 2016 put her at the pinnacle of skiing, period. Always with a strong connection to nature, she worked with Smith designers to capture the phases of the moon for her new AC goggle. Wanting a lens that was tuned for big mountain spines, she chose the ChromaPop™ Sun Platinum lens.

Xavier de Le Rue | I/OX Xavier snowboards steep terrain that most professionals won’t dare to try. This push to find the limits is exemplified in goggle art this year with sketches of maps and schematics taken from his planning a season’s worth of new lines. To serve him best in highly exposed terrain, Xavier chose ChromaPop™ Sun Black for its highest light filtering within the Smith offering.

Elena Hight | I/OS INCLUDED LENSES

ChromaPop™ Sun Black

ChromaPop™ Storm Rose Flash

When two-time Olympian, Elena isn’t riding halfpipe, she’s branching out into the Alaska backcountry. Drawing from fashion that inspires her, Elena wanted to create a gold and white strap that was distilled down to basic geometry. And as she moves to ride both halfpipe and backcountry, she wanted a lens that would stay flexible in the most conditions, ChromaPop™ Everyday Red Mirror.

Louif Paradis | Squad XL Quebec-born Louif has been a dominant and leading force in the streets since his 2008 breakout part, and now he’s expanded his repertoire in the backcountry. A trendsetting rider, Louif wanted a streetwear inspired palm frond print. Louif approached picking the right lenses for his upcoming season from a perspective of being prepared. Not knowing where he might be traveling any given week, he went with the pairing of ChromaPop™ Sun Green Mirror and Storm Rose Flash so he’d so he’d be ready for whether the day turns out to be bright sun or greybird clouds.

ChromaPop™ Storm Rose Flash

One of the most inventive snowboarders ever, Scott brings a welcomed riding with an out-of-the-box arsenal of tricks. Just like he approaches snowboarding, he took an unexpected approach to his AC goggle. Scott sat down at a desk in Smith headquarters and started to sketch cartoons of his favorite tricks, some he’s done and some he wishes he could do. And while the drawings are playful, he wanted a ChromaPop™ Sun Black lens to make sure he kept some attitude in the streets while filming his next part.

Mark Abma | Squad Not only is Whistler’s Mark Abma one of the most celebrated freeskiers in the game, he’s one of the pioneers that brought park tricks into the backcountry over 15 years ago. Known for his laidback, fluid style, Mark wanted to mirror this approach with a graphic of smoke flowing over the frame and strap. And to keep his light-sensitive eyes shielded, he selected the ChromaPop™ Sun Black lens.

Desiree Melancon | Riot INCLUDED LENSES

Desiree is always a favorite for Women’s Rider of the Year. She combines creativity with an edge in her hard and fast approach to rails, wallrides and massive gaps. This carries over into her own artwork, as she’s a passionate artist and trying to finish art school when she’s not snowboarding. For her AC goggle, Des drew her own art and picked her own primary colors, capping it off with the mean looking ChromaPop™ Sun Black lens for days slashing through her favorite condition: spring slush.
