Spherical lenses are built on a base curve in both the X (horizontal) and Y (vertical) axis. TLT (TAPERED LENS TECHNOLOGY)

When light passes through a medium it refracts, i.e. changes course. If left uncorrected, this refraction can cause visual distortion and eye fatigue. Smith’s Tapered Lens Technology straightens out the incoming light rays by progressively tapering the lens from the optical center toward the peripheral view. What this means for you is that you see with 100% accuracy and maximum comfort. HYDROPHOBIC LENS COATING

A durable coating bonded to all mirrored lenses that repels moisture, grease and grime. A barrier between your lenses and the world. Water will bead up and disperse without streaking. Smudges from fingerprints are wiped clean easily.

POREX™ FILTER TECHNOLOGY

Changes in elevation bring changes in atmospheric pressure. These forces have the potential to diminish the optics of thermal lens systems. Goggles fog when standard helmets trap warm, moist air in the goggle chamber. Smith’s AirEvac ventilation systems generate maximum airflow that pulls warm, fog-causing air out of the goggle. MIPS is used to reduce the rotational forces to the brain in the case of an oblique impact. Smith helmets are created to absorb direct impacts very efficiently and when combined with MIPS, Smith helmets absorb oblique forces better by allowing a small rotation of the outer shell relative to the liner.

Smith’s objective and design philosophy behind Aerocore™ construction is to increase airflow, improve temperature regulation resulting in fog-free vision and improve impact resistance. Collaborations SUBCULTURE MEETS PERFORMANCE This year, Smith has collaborated with four projects that blend new perspectives of art and culture with Smith’s innovation.

EMILY HOY: Migrating from Ohio to Southern California to Bend, Oregon Emily is a collage artist and designer who has worked with a variety of clients including Volcom Women’s and Moment Skis. She enjoys manipulating paper, photos, fashion magazines, and old science books to create art and organize chaos.

SMITH X MEAN FOLK: Pins and patches are worn as badges of subculture, dissent and non-conformity. A small pin on the lapel of a well-worn denim jacket has a story. Flying under the flag of “Goods for people with bad attitudes,” Mean Folk is a Vermont-based lifestyle brand that sells punk panache, specializing in accessories, soft-goods, and sarcasm made for the introverted, pessimistic or anyone that has been told to “smile.” As founder and artist, Jon Testa says, “I was always told that I had a bad attitude growing up, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a sense of humor about it.” Each SmithXMean Folk goggle comes with sewn-on patch and collectible, signature PineappleSkull pin.

KINDRED STUDIO:

Art meets performance in the crosscategory collaboration between Smith and famed Brazilian street art crew Bicicleta Sem Freio (translated, Bicycle with No Brakes). The project creates an intersection between innovation and artistic expression. Renato Reno and Douglas Castro of Goiania, Brasil created a canvas inspired by athletes pursuing their thrill and key symbols of Brazilian culture.

Kindred is the multi-disciplinary studio of Sydney, Australia based Illustrator, Designer and Art Director Andrew Fairclough whose works blends traditional print processes, even photocopying, with striking modern communication design. For his artist series piece for Smith, he used the theme, “things you might find at a yard sale.” When he’s not creating, Andrew can be found surfing or snowboarding.
