Welcome to Roadbike 2016 Gran Fondos. What a great way to feed aspiration, to motivate training, to get to hang out with your cycling friends, to plan where in the world to go, to visit and ride new and exotic places - or at least to dream about doing it. As the sport is expanding, with more people on the road than ever, MTB is in its third phase of strong growth, commuter cycling is booming in cities around the world and long distance road cycling races are popping up like mushrooms from the ground.

POC is a Swedish company with a strong mission to do the best we can to possibly save lives and to reduce the consequences of accidents for gravity sports athletes and cyclists.

The number of people exploring the pros of cycling, the perfect and compliant training, kind to body, muscles and joints, the excitement, speed and beauty of merging with the surrounding landscape and the opportunity to travel and visit new places, is increasing fast from day to day. For 2016 POC is launching the Fondo concept, with products deriving from POC’s pro athletes lines AVIP and Raceday. Uncompromizing products using the best materials, cuts and making and with fit and engineering to match the needs of the dedicated non-pros but avid practitioners, inspired from different races around the world. AVIP, the pro line promoting safety while training and sharing roads with motorists, has a number of additional garments to cover a greater span of temperatures and weather conditions. Raceday, which is all about the ultimate tools and support to maximize performance on the race day, has a couple of amazing and game changing novelties with new and even faster fabrics, structures, innovative engineering, as well as properties supporting wicking, ventilation and low weight. The Shorts & Tights line, using our VPDS silicone chamois technology, arriving as a gift from above to pro cyclists and teams last year, also has additional products to service specific needs to a new level. The young, German professional UCI Continental Team will be competing in road races across Europe and field a diverse roster including, among others, U23 Junior World Champion Lennard Kämna (TT) as well as German Cross and Road Champions like Silvio Herklotz and Ole Quast. Since beginning of 2015 the team is also a member of the french, “Mouvement Pour un Cyclisme Crédible”, a union created to defend the idea of clean cycling. Team Stölting will be using products from the award-winning AVIP Collection for enhanced performance and improved safety. AVIP stands for Attention, Visibility, Interaction and Protection and is POC’s most ambitious initiative to date, promoting safety for road cyclists.

WATTS Lab is a highly specialized department whose objective is to optimize performance and aerodynamics in POC products, allowing the cyclist to go faster while using less energy. WATTS Lab brings together knowledge and experience from CannondaleGarmin Pro Cycling team, aerodynamic specialists and experts in CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics). All members are carefully selected for their expertise and to give POC’s product development team scientifically validated input on what to apply and focus on to improve performance and aerodynamic efficiency. To develop products that match our uncompromising vision, we are working closely with the members of WATTS Lab. This allows us to predict and improve performance at an early stage and throughout the development process.

Aero Relevancy Research and Design

Saving watts and seconds Ryder Hesjedal won the 2012 Giro d’Italia after 91 hours, 39 minutes and 2 seconds of riding. The difference to second place Joaquim Rodriguez was 16 seconds, which if averaged across the 3 476 kilometers of the race, represents 0.005 seconds per kilometer. And across the 21 stages it means an average winning margin of 0.76 seconds per stage. In road cycling the margins of victory are small and every second is valuable. For Raceday we were curious to see what we could achieve in terms of

Seconds gained over a 40K TT-race aerodynamic performance. Being able to affect 80% of your aero-dynamic efficiency is a challenge we have taken very seriously and it has required us to find new ways and solutions to improve performance. Together with the aerodynamic specialists in WATTS Lab we have studied the specific performance needs in road cycling and importantly not only what to focus on, but also where to focus. On the following page are some interesting numbers we would like to share.

Octal & Octal AVIP MIPS The award winning Octal helmet has been engineered to take the next step in road bike helmet safety and offers optimal ventilation, comfort and weighs less than 200 grams (size M, CE-version). To further improve safety, the Octal provides more coverage and additional protection for the temples and back of the head and the EPS liner is strategically thicker in the most exposed areas. The fully wrapped unibody shell construction functions as a monocoque and enhances the safety properties and construction integrity of the helmet while maintaining a low weight. POC has approached ventilation in a unique way and instead of using many small vents, Octal has fewer, but larger, ventilation slots. This ventilation design allows more air to flow through the helmet, which also results in improved aerodynamic performance. The lightweight size adjustment system ensures a comfortable and secure fit while the Coolbest padding helps reduce the temperature at the interface between the helmet and head.

Cerebel The Cerebel helmet has been developed in close collaboration with Cannondale-Garmin Pro Cycling team, Volvo Car Group and WATTS Lab. The Cerebel is a compact aero road helmet, designed and engineered to improve aerodynamic performance. Extensive wind tunnel testing and CFD simulations shows that the Cerebel excels in dynamic and varying body positions, which in turn benefits upper body movement and overall lactate clearing efficiency compared to a static TT position. The helmet’s rear is made of soft molded EVA covered in aerodynamic fabric for reduced drag and increased comfort. The Cerebel is equipped with a visor from Zeiss that uses a unique magnetic system to stay firmly in place. The visor tint is specifically developed together with Zeiss to enhance the contrast of the road surface, allowing the rider to spot any irregularities or obstacles in time. POC’s unique magnetic lens attachment system is designed to ensure that the lens is correctly positioned for low drag, and it also allows for quick attaching and removal.

Tempor The award winning Tempor helmet is designed to provide the cutting edge advantage needed in time trial races. It has superior aerodynamic and safety performance and the EPS liner provides a high level of protection with increased thickness at the most exposed areas. In the development process, POC involved the Olympic time trial medalist Gustav Larsson and aerodynamic specialists from Semcon. POC’s conceptual approach to aerodynamics was to look at the rider as one body mass, rather than isolating the head from the rest of the body. POC used CFD aerodynamic simulations for evaluation and optimization. The two air intakes in the front reduce air resistance by leading the air through the helmet and past the shoulders. This airflow also provides generous ventilation.

About Raceday

aceday is the result of POC’s uncompromising approach to road cycling performance and marks the next step in our quest to redefine the future of road cycling. Raceday is built on the competence of POC’s product development team and developed in close collaboration with CannondaleGarmin Pro Cycling Team, Volvo Car Group and the aerodynamic specialists in WATTS Lab. The small margins of victory are well known in competitive road cycling. Back in 1989 Greg Lemond won the Tour de France by 8 seconds and more recently in 2012, Ryder Hesjedal won the Giro d’Italia by 16 seconds after more than 90 hours of riding. Taken across each day of racing the margins of victory represent little more than an average pedal revolution and both Lemond’s and Hesjedal’s wins illustrate that tiny margins matter. Aerodynamics played a fundamental role in both these victories and have a measurable effect on performance in road cycling. Studies show that up to 90% of a cyclists effort goes into travelling through the air. Significantly, 80% of this air resistance comes from the cyclist’s body and position on the bike. POC has a history of developing equipment used by Olympic medalists in ski racing, X Games winners and the current world record holder in speed skiing. For Raceday we have taken this experience and applied our cross-scientific approach in order to improve road cycling performance. Developed for racing in wet conditions, the lightweight and easily stowable Stretch Light Rain Jacket is made from durable nylon stretch fabric with 20 000 mm water column. Through our research we could see that the constant pressure and vibration in road cycling are more severe than expected. These findings required us to find new ways to provide for a higher level of protection without compromising performance. To address this concern, we have developed the unique silicone based VPDS, which is inspired by

About AVIP

OC is a Swedish company with a strong mission to do the best we can to possibly save lives and to reduce the consequences of accidents for gravity sports athletes and cyclists. Currently skiers, snowboarders and MTB cyclists around the world use POC helmets and armor, with some winning the Olympics, World Championships and X Games, while others may just want the right protection to go downhill biking at their favorite location. It is great to witness the growth in road cycling, but this growth also brings to light the risks and safety issues involved in sharing roads with motor-ists, other cyclists and pedestrians. We have always considered being part of road cycling as a natural evolution as we wanted to take our experience and knowledge in developing groundbreaking protection into the road bike scene. For capacity reasons we have deliberately held back but observing a number of trends and issues, combined with our mission, we felt the responsibility to act. Some of the trends that worried us include; how infrastructure is developed for cars, the lack of interaction between road users, respect and under-standing among road users and the constant hazard of being run into by a car. Further, half of all casualties on rural roads, and 92% of reported cyclists killed or seriously injured, occur in accidents involve other vehicles, most often a car. This has led us to consider a platform, which is a true reflection of our mission and brings

a new relevance to road biking. Through our medical and performance forums, POC Lab and WATTS Lab, we investigated and researched different areas to better understand the specific hazards in road cycling and where gains could be made. We looked deeper into the problem, researching and studying perception, visibility, color and contrast, communication, psychology, digital technology, aerodynamics and more. AVIP is the result of our work and is our first specific road bike range. It is a vision and concept, which has been created by collaborating with some of the best minds in science, health and technology to redefine the future of road bike safety and performance. Besides the evident core developed for road bike helmets, which promote new safety features, aerodynamics and overall performance, there are a number of new functional, technical, performance products for road cyclists. These have been developed to support attention, visibility, interaction and protection - including the finest and most uncompromising cycling clothing, materials, making, accessories and functional details for efficacy, without sacrificing safety. In addition to the initial launch of the ICEdot Crash Sensor with GPS tracking, there will be future digital and technological initiatives to support interaction and communication between cyclists and motorists. POC wants to change the future of road biking and AVIP represents the beginning of our vision.

Attention uses the best possible tools to ensure a cyclist is recognized clearly, and in milli-seconds, by others in traffic through addressing the five senses independently or in combination. VISIBILIT Y

Optimizing visibility in a number of different situations and scenarios, including season, weather, time of day, distance, environment and light conditions. Through scientifically understanding how, color, material, contrast, patterns, motion and light interact it provides an insight to develop the best possible visibility and recognition on the road. INTERACTION

It is about researching the possibilities and opportunities for communication and technological interaction between a rider, motorists and pedestrians to support proactive safety. Interaction applies new ideas to what can be done with modern technology to allow a rider to worry less about other road users and surroundings and focus solely on riding. Interaction also supports communication with the outside world in post incidents situations where there is a need for rescue or emergency. PROTECTION

The core of POC’s experience, understanding how to develop physical protection focuses on minimizing the amount of energy being transmitted to the users brain and body. All engineered with innovative technology and a specific user and activity in mind, ultimately optimizing protection without compromising performance.

Visibility and colors Through our research we identified that visibility is not always simply a question of wearing more fluorescent clothing, but considering and understanding the use of color and contrast and the environment in which it will be used. This approach led us to the AVIP color palette, which is a cornerstone of AVIP. All colors in the AVIP color palette have been evaluated and considered to provide optimal visibility and contrast in a road bike environment.

With POC’s cross-scientific approach to develop reliable and advanced protection, we always end up in new areas of special competence depending on the challenge. For AVIP, we gained valuable knowledge in different fields, such as color, contrast, perception, motion, psychology and anthropology to better understand what we needed to translate and focus on in order to improve road bike safety. Here are some interesting perspectives we would like to share. FLUORESCENT COLORS  A conventional bright color is able to reflect about 90% of a color present in the visible spectrum. Fluorescent colors can reflect as much as 200% to 300% by using a larger amount of the visible spectrum and by re-radiate some of the absorbed ultraviolet rays and colors in the lower part of the visible spectrum and turn it in to wavelengths the human eye can see. This ultimately results in the eye perceiving a more intense color. PERCEPTION AND RECOGNITION DISTANCE The use of fluorescent colors and high visibility products is evident and can be seen in varying situations all over the world. The advantage of fluorescent clothing is that it increases the distance when an object is seen. Some studies show that fluorescent clothing is five and half time more visible than conventional clothing e.g. with fluorescent clothing a driver will see the object at 670 meters instead of 120 meters with regular clothing. However, we felt there is a fundamental difference between being seen and being recognized. If motorists at an early stage can identify you as a cyclist, they can better plan their own maneuvers. We were conscious of what other road users were able to detect, specifically the critical elements of perception and recognition distances.

Perception distance - is the distance from where an object is first seen. During this time the brain processes a lot of information to create a perceptual hypothesis. The hypothesis is based on familiar patterns and past experiences, but ultimately the object may not be accurately recognized. Recognition distance - is the distance where the brain can perceive what the object actually is. By using prior knowledge and interpreting visual clues, such as colors, contrast, motion etc, the brain will recognize the object. A common perception is that visibility is equal to bright and fluorescent colors. Through our research we identified that advantages could be gained by considering all possibilities to increase perception and recognition distances to improve rider safety. To find the right approach we considered the changing backdrop that makes up a usual ride, but also different environmental factors such as weather, light, nature, time of the day. Analyzing a problem often provides clear insights into where gains can be made without having to re-invent the wheel. Contrast is an example and has long been considered a fundamental part of visibility. CONTRAST  One of the most important factors affecting visibility is contrast. Contrast gives the brain visual clues, ultimately resulting in an earlier and informed decision on the identity of an object. There are basically two types of contrast, which can be explained by the prominence of a color compared to its background and the difference in a color to adjacent colors, i.e. color intensity and difference.

The lens is ripel treated to help keeping fog, dirt and grime off your lenses and to makes water pearl off. The Crave has been designed to match seamlessly with the Tectal and Tectal Race helmets and is also featuring a snap in hinge construction for improved durability and to avoid breaking the frame when taking a hit. Do Flow is a dedicated sports frame, injected in grilamid for low weight and durability. The rubber inserts and the adjustable nose piece made with hydrophilic rubber keeps the frame firmly in place with every movement. The lens tints are developed for maximum contrast on trails, allowing better definition to spot obstacles on the ground. The anti-fog and Ripel treatments help keeping fog, dirt and grime off your lenses and makes water pearl off.

POC is collaborating with Carl Zeiss Vision, who are recognized and revered for the best-in-class optical expertise in ophthalmic lenses, medical equipment and sport optics for over one hundred years. This collaboration has allowed us to develop a great and wide range of lenses in PC and nylon, and to improve the optical performance of our sunglasses.

POC PC lenses by Carl Zeiss Vision are made of polycarbonate and have great optical performance. The excellent impact resistance makes them a good choice for sporting activities. POC nylon lenses by Carl Zeiss Vision are made of lightweight polyamide, a material with excellent optical properties. NXT LENSES In the 1990’s the US Army required a lightweight transparent material that would provide ballistic protection without compromising optical performance. This new material would have to provide reliability, protection and weather resistance, along with ballistic and optical requirements. The material was further developed into NXT® lenses. By applying a customized photochromic system we offer a lens that quickly and automatically adapts to the light conditions of the day. POLARIZED Polarization is common in sunglass lenses as a way of reducing glare from surfaces, for example water. It works by filtering certain types of polarized electromagnetic waves and leaving only a portion, which is polarized parallel to the orientation of the filter. POC’s polarized lenses have the polarizing element infused directly in the lens through a proprietary process. Thanks to this, the lens become thinner, more durable and has better optical performance than traditional film-based polarization filters. HCD – HIGH CHROMATIC DEFINITION POC’s high chromatic definition lenses intensify the natural color contrast by boosting the wavelengths that the eyes’ receptors actually react on. HCD also harmonizes the color fluctuation caused by the interplay between light and shadow. The result is prevented eye fatigue and improved reaction time. ACTIVITY-SPECIFIC LENS TINTS Different sports require different contrasts. Together with Carl Zeiss Vision, who has great experience in improving optical performance for diverse athletes, we have developed lens tints that bring out the details that are important for specific sports. Our road bike optimized lens increases contrasts on the road surface, helping you to spot irregularities, holes and gravel in time, while our trail specific lens is developed for maximum contrast on forest trails, adding definition to obstacles like roots or rocks on the ground.

T R EAT MEN T S RIPEL A lens treatment that makes water and perspiration pearl off the surface, rather than creating a film. The lens stays clean and free of distortion that would otherwise be caused by the water. The lenses will also withstand fingerprints and stains, which make them stay clean much longer than ordinary lenses. ANTI-FOG To optimize our sports glasses for biking we have added the best anti-fog treatment available. It vastly increases the lenses resistance to fog up in moist environments or with heavy physical effort, supporting your vision and increasing your performance. ANTI-SCRATCH The anti-scratch coating prevents scratches that otherwise can damage the surface of the lens. ANTI-REFLECTIVE The anti-reflective coating provides a sharper vision with less glare and prevents sunlight from reflecting into your eyes from the back surface of the lens when the sun is behind you. VLT – VISIBLE LIGHT TRANSMISSION VLT is a measurement that specifies the percentage of light coming through the lens, reaching your eyes. VLT can also be separated into five different categories:

F R AMES GRILAMID FRAMES Our injected grilamid frames offer low weight, flexibility and durability. ACETATE FRAMES Our high quality acetate frames are hand sculpted from premium acetate. HYDROPHILIC RUBBER The anti-slip rubber inserts at the temples and the adjustable nose piece, made of hydrophilic rubber, keeps the frame firmly in place with every movement. RX-ABILITY RX-able frames are compatible with prescription lenses within the corrective range. This means an optician or retailer can order tinted lenses with any prescription (within the stated range) from their lens supplier. The retailer can also contact Zeiss to get tinted lenses with the desired prescription. Note that lens material may differ. A complete RX-ability analysis made by Zeiss is available on demand.

Volvo Partnership

ur partnership with Volvo Car Group allows us to exchange knowledge and experience in order to mutually explore new ideas within safety and design. The partnership will explore possibilities to extend the safety knowledge as well as products and services offered by Volvo and POC. Together with Volvo we are looking at new ways to promote safety and our initial research and development project is focusing on communication between cars and cyclists. Volvo has the vision, competence and experience and have been leading the development within road safety for more than 80

years and it’s a treasure to interact on safety with them. The partnership has allowed for state of the art research, full scale testing and has supported and injected new ideas into our development processes. The first results of the partnership will be presented in the second half of 2014. Further, our collaboration with Volvo has given us the opportunity to utilize Volvo’s knowledge in aerodynamics and their wind tunnel facility for aerodynamic optimization. Volvo is also a part of POC WATTS Lab, our highly specialized department whose objective is to optimize performance and aerodynamics in POC products.

OC was founded in 2005 and made its first entry, addressing the ski racing market, at the ISPO trade show where it also introduced its mission. POC’s new ideas and solutions to improve ski racing safety, by reducing the force transmitted to the brain and body in case of a crash, gained a lot of attention. The concepts, technologies, and materials used and implemented for the helmets and body armor were developed in close collaboration with POC Lab; POC’s scientific forum that consists of some of the world’s foremost sports medicine experts, brain scientists and specialists in spinal cord injuries. In 2014, POC announced the launch of AVIP - its first specific road bike range. AVIP stands for Attention, Visibility, Interaction and Protection and is POC’s most ambitious initiative to date,

promoting safety for road cyclists. To achieve higher levels of performance, and balance the expertise gained from POC Lab in safety and medicine, POC established WATTS Lab. WATTS Lab brings together knowledge from specialists in aerodynamics and is a highly specialized department whose objective is to optimize POC products, allowing the cyclist to go faster, using less energy. At the beginning of 2014, POC announced a three-year partnership to become the official helmet and eyewear supplier of Garmin-Sharp Pro Cycling team. At the same time, POC established an exclusive partnership with Volvo Car Group to explore new ideas within safety and design. Throughout the years, POC has received more than 40 prestigious international safety, design, innovation and business awards.
