TRADITION CULTIVATED FOR CENTURIES Although nowadays golf is associated with elites, historians assume that that this sport was invented by …shepherds. They wanted to entertain themselves when grazing animals and attempted to hit round pebbles into hare’s den with the help of shepherd’s crook. Different version of the game and its rules were present in other parts of Europe. First references date back to 1297 to Holland. The word “golf” probably comes from Dutch “kolf” which means “stick”. Scotland is considered the capital of the discipline. Golf developed here since 15th century in the form that is similar to the game played nowadays. The citizens of St. Andrews are considered the pioneers of golf. They used seaside dunes as golf fields, their natural, untouched by human civilization shape is used today as the role model of planning new investments.
KING’S TWO CENTS WORTH None of the golf enthusiasts has to be convinced that golf can be extremely engaging. At the beginning of its existence, golf was a thread to the nation’s defense! In 1457 King James II banned golf for fear that young people stop practicing archery. At the time of war with England, Scotland needed warriors, not golfers. After 50 years of peaceful atmosphere, king James IV made a happy decision; in 1502 his subjects could come back on the green! King’s grandson, James VI was so crazy about golf that he visited London to play golf match there. This is exactly how the first golf field in London was built (now it’s called Royal Blackheath). However, it’s not the oldest golf field, Old Links Musselburgh Racecourse is the oldest facility of this type.
GOLF MAP OF THE WORLD Golf became extremely popular in other continents. It gradually gained more and more passionate fans, however Scotland was the place where golf was the most appreciated. Incredible popularity of golf in 19th century contributed to the opening of official golf clubs in Mumbai, Canada, New Zealand or Africa. Golf was also fashionable in Poland. The oldest golf club in Poland was opened in 1906 in Szczawna Zdrój (Bad Sazbrunn at that time). At the beginning of war, there were four golf fields in Katowice, Powsin, Łańcut and Gdańsk. War, occupation, and other political reasons removed this discipline from Polish tradition and awareness. Game of golf was considered a manifestation of capitalism and aristocratic entertainment that had to be eradicated from Polish culture. The peak of popularity of golf in Poland dates back to the 90s. In 1992 first Polish golf tournament took place, it became the beginning of popularity of golf game in Poland.

Rumor has it that the word “golf” is an abbreviation of a phrase: Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden. Mary I Stuart was the pioneer of female golf. First women’s golf tournament was mentioned in notes from 1810, first amateur golf championship for women took place in 1893. However, this discipline wasn’t professional yet. Helen Hicks was the first professional golf player, she practiced this sport in 30s, 20th century. Many women followed her example and at the beginning of 50s they could join Ladies Professional Golf Association. In 2005 Polish female golfers for the first time took part in Golf Championship in Poland. Golf is equally popular among men and women. Dr Irena Eris Ladies’ Golf Cup organized since 2007 is the most exceptional golf contest for women. Its 12th edition is going to take place on July 11th. The Cup is the greatest event of this type in Poland. Ladies from all over the world compete surrounded by the beautiful scenery of Masuria landscapes. What makes the tournament so exceptional? It’s the harmony between sport rivalry, feminine strength and the relax after the struggle on the green. S’portofino has been the

How long have you been playing golf and why did you start playing? I have been playing for 15 years. I started when I was 12 years old. My dad took me to the golf course in Poznań next to Ławica airport. I liked it right away and I was good at it. When I excel at something I never give up! I was improving day by day and when other growing up girls gave up on golf for other pleasures, I kept on playing. I was totally preoccupied by golf and I played at least 5 times a week. What’s so special about golf that it became the love of your life? I love golf, because it can be both easy and difficult, pleasant and irritating. Every day brings something different and makes you want to be a better player. Your play can deteriorate overnight, so you have to train all the time. In golf you will never achieve perfection, it’s addictive like a drug. Apart from that, playing golf you have to fight against yourself. The game gives us a lot of time to discover your strengths and weaknesses. To be a good golf player, you have to be mentally strong. Of course, there are other reasons why I love golf, for example I like the contact with nature among my friends, adrenaline, and rivalry. In 2017 you set up your own Golf Academy and you share your passion with amateurs. How do you feel on the course as a coach? The idea was a natural transition from a player to a coach. For many years I practiced with many trainers, and now I feel the need to share my knowledge and experience with other players. I started losing my satisfaction from playing, so I decided to help others and improve their technique. The Academy is not only for women, I was inspired by Dr Irena Eris Ladies’ Golf Cup. When I saw mistakes made on the green by feminine players, I thought that with my little effort they can improve their performance. I meet a lot of ladies who are not very fond of training with a coach because they’re ashamed or scared. Female coach is needed in Poland! The Academy was officially set up in spring and it’s still developing. I’m on the move,
I teach in Poland and Warsaw, if there’s need I visit other golf fields in Poland. I can reach any female player in need. You also organize camps for ladies – where can we expect the next edition? Yes, I organize special camps for women. Last year, we organized first batch that was directed to female golf players. Yoga in the morning, diet plan created by a dietician, massages, spa, and above all, golf game were everything that the ladies needed for their body and soul. The camp is obviously supposed to improve golf technique.

In golf you will never achieve perfection, it’s addictive like a drug.” Most of the time was devoted to a short game which is an essential element of the game, but unfortunately it’s neglected by golfers. Ladies were also practicing long game and the game on the golf course. During the camp, each and every lady has a chance improve all aspects of her game and spend some time with her friends. Other camps are going to take place in April, July, and August this year. Now, the camps are organized for ladies who have some basics of golf, but I don’t forget about golf beginners and I count on their interest. How do you fight with stereotypes associated with golf? How often do you hear people saying: “golf is not my thing”? I stopped fighting with stereotypes. When I was younger I was more emotional about that. Now my answer is: “try it and then we’ll talk”. I always emphasize that golf isn’t for everyone, but these who haven’t tried golf, shouldn’t talk about it. I don’t know anyone who tried to hit the ball and later said that golf is a “sport for grandparents”. 32 WWW.SPORTOFINO.COM
For whom is golf? Is there any character feature that helps in being a good golfer? Golf is for everyone, sex and age are of no importance. It’s hard to say which character feature helps. Once I said that it’s a sport for a patient person, but it’s not entirely true. For example I am very impatient in everyday situations, and totally opposite on the green. Golf can calm a nervous and impatient person. It’s quite probable that people who like extreme sports and feel the need for the rush of adrenaline and high pulse won’t find golf appealing. Golf can be practiced recreationally and professionally, anyone can do this in their favorite form and frequency. What’s the most difficult about golf and makes them give up quickly? Controlling your emotions is the most difficult challenge. You shouldn’t worry about failures or one missed hole. Forgetting about previous holes is very useful, many people are unable to do this because it’s very difficult. The best way to achieve success is to forget what happened and playing hit after hit. When I play in the tournament I imagine that I am only training and nothing bad is going to happen. Pressure isn’t needed when playing golf, you have to relax. How do you choose your clothes for golf? When it comes to golf apparel, I pay attention to comfort and fabrics. I played golf in very high temperatures and clothes made from very thin, technical fabrics made it possible for me to play for many hours on a golf course. Obviously apart from comfort I also appreciate good look. I like it when clothes emphasize femininity and preserve golf etiquette. I personally enjoy playing in skirts and dresses. I appreciate when they’re made from thin and elastic fabrics, I feel comfortable wearing them and they make it easier for me to play in the hot weather. You can see me on the green wearing a skirt and sleeveless t-shirt because such clothes provide me with freedom of movement which is very essential for me.

Rosa Private Golf Club near Częstochowa and Gradi Golf Club near Wrocław are just
