All quiet on the AFL front

I

s it only us or has AFL news quietened over this bye period of the season?

While a few new re-signings at the Crows have kept the local papers inked, the national media have been searching for things to talk about over the past week. Previous news have received further poking and prodding, such as Essendon’s saga, Port’s form, ducking issues and Garry Ablett not playing, among others. With no controversial match committee decisions or goal challenges, lack of real highlights, all seems a bit quiet. Apparently there is little happening in the AFL at the moment. And so we ask the question. Is it the fewer games occurring over these bye weekends that limit the usual influx of stories circling the AFL scene?

Maybe no news is a good thing because normally when players are on their breaks we hear of off-field incidents that can be a blight on the game. At least such features as Neale Daniher’s Motor Neurone Disease battle and the loss of Nick Riewoldt’s sister bring a human face to the game at this time and show that it’s not always about the on-field dramas that arise. The lack of news also tends to wane the public’s interest in football during this bye period, especially when your side is not involved. With the Players’ Association calling for a break mid-season, would it be better to have just one weekend free of football, instead of the current stagnated system of only six games over three weekends? A whole weekend off would perhaps allow the AFL to have a charity telethon crossing the free-to-air channel and Foxtel to raise money for the many worthwhile causes relating to the football family. Some of the present-day players could get involved if not away on overseas jaunts but

possibly it could be something that past players could get involved in as well. There is plenty of historic coverage that could be televised while the different footy panels could discuss the issues of the season at hand. In our current tough economic time, it would allow fans to contribute to the one worthy event which could spread funds across a number of chosen charities, instead of different groups popping up each week of late asking for financial assistance. At the same time, media outlets wouldn’t have to hunt for a new story just to fill their pages, airwaves or television screens when not much is happening on the ground. While the players get a break, the fans have no doubt earnt one too from the constant dribble published or discussed. Such a broadcast would hold their interest when their side is not playing as well. Perhaps they wouldn’t be lost totally (especially those supporters of clubs already unlikely to play finals) when the footy resumes and September nears. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

THUMBS UP

THUMBS Down

Aussie Warrior Andrew Bogut has earnt his championship ring in Golden State’s title victory in the NBA finals.

The criticism Cleveland Cavalier Matthew Dellavedova has been receiving in the American media surrounding his “annoying” tactics during the NBA finals has certainly been unwarranted.

Bogut was Australia’s first number one pick for the Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA draft back in 2005 before joining the Warriors in 2012, holding his own in the competitive American market. While Luc Longley was a pioneer for Australians in the NBA, it has been Bogut who has sparked many young Australians to follow his path to the NBA competion.

He has simply shown Aussie spirit and toughness for competition, which has led the Cavaliers to a play-off. His teammates love his style of play. It has even taken the focus from champion Cavalier LeBron James. Maybe he can take Ryan Crowley’s spot.

Finding the missing link P

ort Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley is facing the toughest challenges in his time at Alberton.

With opposition coaches working out his game plan of the past two seasons, Hinkley needs to find something new to reignite his players and the club’s flagging season.

tandem with Jay Schulz. Jackson Tregove’s return from injury will strengthen the side’s defensive stocks but neither move regains the run to the side. Much of this must come from the current players to step up their work rate and spread harder across the ground.

The fitness level of most clubs in the competition is matching that of the Power now and their ability to maintain the pressure for four quarters is also restricting Port’s usual flow.

White’s absence will simply require other players to take charge. Maybe this is Andrew Moore’s, Cam O’Shea’s, Kane Mitchell’s, Jake Neade’s, Nathan Krakouer’s or Brandon Ah Chee’s moment to shine.

While the Power has kept up its own high intensity at the contest, its inability to break the lines like it has in the recent past has hindered its fluent ball movement and allowed opponents to put it under increased pressure in more dangerous positions on the ground.

Hinkley could even look at giving Justin Westhoff more freedom across a wing or half-back but he does need to shake things up a bit. They need him “on” again for the rest of the season not “off”.

Opposition coaches are also re-structuring their sides against Port, preventing it from gaining access to the middle of the ground and pushing them wider which creates more opportunities for turnovers. The Power is certainly missing the run of Jared Polec and Matthew White last week whose quickness of foot meant the drive off half back and through the middle was easily shut down and it hadn’t be replaced by the likes of fellow speedsters Jarman Impey and Jasper Pittard. Their attack on the ball is unquestioned with captain Travis Boak, Ollie Wines and Robbie Gray still getting in and under to provide Chad Wingard, Brad Ebert and Hamish Hartlett. However, it is just not flowing like it did previously. Change is needed and it’s up to Hinkley to tweak the system a bit to re-find the missing link. The introduction of Paddy Ryder hasn’t improved the structure as it was expected to so Hinkley must decide if Ryder the club’s number one ruckman and so Matthew Lobbe may need to regain touch in the SANFL or is he a better forward option to work in

Footy footnotes Did the Crows win? More importantly, the Power needs a win to revive their season after their effort went unrewarded last Friday night against Geelong. Fewer games last weekend but no shortage of action: • The ducking rule is still confusing everyone, players and umpires alike - under the letter of the law, the right decision was made when Roos skipper Andrew Swallow picked up the ball, burrowed his head into Swan antagonist Adam Goodes and was then pinged for ‘holding the ball’, he did have a chance to knock the ball out and chose to pick it up, but should prior opportunity have come into it? • Is the little known ruck combination of Mark Blicavs and Rhys Stanley at the Cats now the best in the competition – they are the most unpredictable at least? • Has Bomber coach James Hird given

Power midfielder Brad Ebert has stood up as usual, providing much needed run, while Blues onballer Bryce Gibbs should be back to offer Carlton likewise this week. Photo: AAP up – no recognised ruckman against Nic Naitanui and Callum Sinclair is inexcusable, especially after seeing the big man influence the night before? (former Port and GSW ruckman Jonathan Giles must be questioning his decision to join Essendon after not being able to get a game last week) • A growing injury list, which had key players Shane Mumford, Phil Davis, Joel Patfull and Stephen Coniglio added to it last week, looks set to curtail the Giants’ first ever finals run • Just when the hoodoo looked like being broken by the Demons it was extended to 21 losses at Etihad Stadium with just 41 seconds left to play out – Melbourne coach Paul Roos took the blame • Could the AFL follow the NRL’s lead and consider Google in its next broadcasting rights bid? • Crows-supporting Grandmothers rested easier this week following the announcement of their favourite ‘grandson’ Rory Sloane re-signing for another three years at the club

AFL PREVIEW ROUND12

BY DION HAYMAN

ADELAIDE V HAWTHORN

RICHMOND V WEST COAST

The Crows open round 12 celebrating their 25th year in the competition against the side they played in their first ever AFL match. Adelaide, won that game by 86 points and leads the Hawks overall 18 wins to 17. However, the Hawks have won their past four encounters, although their past three wins have come by the slim margins of five, 11 and 12 points. Their most recent meeting was at Adelaide Oval in round 17 last year when the visitors led at every change to win 15.14 (104) to 14.8 (92). Former Crow Jack Gunston kicked four goals while Josh Jenkins booted five for the losers. The Crows last beat the Hawthorn in the opening round of 2011 at Football Park in a match they celebrated their 20th anniversary (rather than their 21st season). Taylor Walker scored four goals in that game. Jason Dunstall kicked bags of nine goals against the Crows three times – in 1993, 1994 and 1996. Tony Modra and Brett Burton hold the goals record for the Crows in this fixture with seven. Luke Breust broke a run of 29 straight goals in last year’s match against the Crows. He scored 16-7 for the remainder of the season.

Richmond has won its past two games against West Coast but hasn’t scored a hat-trick of wins against the Eagles since winning five in a row from 1999-2002. The Eagles’ last beat Richmond at Docklands in 2012 by 10 points on a day Jack Darling kicked four goals. Since then, the Tigers have won twice at Subiaco by 41 points in 2013 (with three goals from Nick Vlastuin) and by 17 points last year in a low-scoring game, 8.11 (59) to 6.6 (42). Richmond gradually increased its margin at every change and held the home side to just two second half goals. After 17 games at Subiaco, the Eagles lead 13 wins to four, including victory in their first ever match in 1987 when they beat the Tigers at home by 14 points. Overall, West Coast leads 23 wins to 16. No game between these sides has been decided by a single figure margin since the Eagles’ two-point win at the MCG in 2005. There have been only five in their 39 clashes. Richmond won three games by less than 10 points in 1987, 1989 and 2000 while West Coast won in 1992 by one point at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Port Adelaide scored its first double last year against Carlton since 2005. The Power won by 33 points in the opening round at Docklands and by 103 points at Adelaide Oval with four goals from Robbie Gray and three apiece from Jake Neade, Justin Westhoff and Chad Wingard. The match remains the highest attended AFL game at the Adelaide Oval. The attendance was 52,505. It was Port’s biggest winning margin, second highest score and Carlton’s lowest score in their 27 meetings. The Power now leads overall 15 wins to 11 with a draw at Football Park in 2005 – a season Carlton finished bottom. The Blues last beat Port in the final round of 2013 in what was the last AFL match at Football Park. The Power gave up a 29-point lead at the final change as the Blues came home with 8.2 to 3.2 to win by one point, 15.14 (104) to 15.13 (103). This game is at the MCG where the sides have met just once before, in 2005, when Port won by 14 points, 18.15 (123) to 16.13 (109).

Two sides with finals ambitions, GWS and North Melbourne, meet at the Sydney Showgrounds for just the second time. Their only previous meeting was in 2012 when North won by 28 points, 16.9 (105) to 11.11 (77), with four goals from Kieran Harper. That match remains the closest of the four between these sides which have all been won by the Kangaroos. In 2012 in Hobart, North won by 129 points with five goals from Aaron Edwards in a match where the Giants were goalless in the first half. Bizarrely, they kicked six of their eight goals in the third quarter that day in what was just their second AFL match. In 2013 at the Docklands, North won by 86 points with five goals from Drew Petrie and four from Lindsay Thomas. Last year at Manuka Oval, the Roos won by 75 points with another five from Petrie. So that’s four games in four different states between these two sides. Jeremy Cameron is the only Giant to score four goals in this fixture in their first clash in Hobart.

WESTERN BULLDOGS V BRISBANE LIONS Saturday 7.10pm, Etihad Stadium

Brisbane has won four of its past five games against the Western Bulldogs but the last two have been tight. In 2013 at the Gabba, the Lions won by seven points after giving up a 50-point half-time lead. Last year at the Docklands, the Lions led by 28 points at three quarter-time before again stumbling home by seven points, 14.11 (95) to 13.9 (87). They are the only single digit results in matches between these sides since 1991. The Bulldogs’ last win against Brisbane came in 2012 when they increased their lead at every change on their way to a 68-point win. Daniel Giansiracusa and Shaun Higgins both finished with three goals. The Lions haven’t won three in a row against the Bulldogs since their six-game winning streak from 2001-04. That run was also part of a sequence of 10 wins in 11 games. But still the Bulldogs shade this match-up 27 wins to 21 from 48 games. The sides have met 10 times at Docklands for five wins apiece.

Geelong has been bullying Melbourne for almost a decade now having won 10 straight games since the sides drew in 2006 at Kardinia Park. Those 10 wins have been by the astonishing average of 70 points. The smallest margin was 30 points, four have been by more than 10 goals, two by more than 100 points and the biggest a record 186 points at Geelong in 2011. The Cats won that game 37.11 (233) to 7.5 (47) with seven goals from Steve Johnson and five apiece from Tom Hawkins and Cam Mooney. Last year at the MCG, the Cats held Melbourne goalless in the first term and were 59 points up by half-time. Hawkins finished with three goals as the Cats won 14.18 (102) to 5.6 (36). Geelong has twice before won 10 straight against the Dees, from 1965-70 and from 1994-2000, but it has never stretched that to 11. The Cats’ last attempt at 11 wins in a row came unstuck at the MCG in 2000 when the Demons won by 18 points. Since 1965, Geelong has 61 wins, 26 losses and a draw against Melbourne.

SANFL PREVIEW ROUND 10

BY CHRIS KENDALL

More in-depth SANFL discussion FROM CHRIS KENDALL can be found at www.sanfl.com.au this season.

CENTRAL V NORTH ADELAIDE

WOODVILLE WEST TORRENS V ADELAIDE

A match that Central simply cannot afford to drop if it is to make the unlikeliest of charges at the finals. Its run home is not terrible and depending on how other contenders go, there is a slender opportunity to press for September action. Dropping the match against Port a fortnight back from a winning position may prove a body blow later in the season, but coach Roy Laird would be deriving great encouragement from his players’ endeavour for long periods. More worries for bottom placed North though as its injury list keeps growing and the depth decreasing with player departures. Losing to Glenelg by 35 points further increases the pressure on a playing group that looks to be struggling for motivation and enthusiasm and unless a major turnaround ensues, a wooden spoon is a genuine possibility. When they get their running game flowing, the Bulldogs can be very hard to slow down but maintaining concentration for the full four quarters is proving their Achilles heel. Some of their younger players show plenty of promise but can be prone to skill errors under pressure, which increases the responsibility of the senior group to lift their effort to maintain the collective press on the opposition. North, on the other hand, is finding consistency an issue from quarter to quarter, with some breathtaking play mixed with mistakes that turn the ball back to the opposition with ease. The gap between its best and worst keeps building and may make it hard for interim coach Michael Handby to confidently implement game plans for the group to adapt to. Most factors point to a Central victory here.

Second hosting eighth in a match with more ramifications for the Eagles than Adelaide, particularly with the former now two games behind top-placed Norwood and needing to maintain a large percentage gap over third-placed Port. They proved their flexibility with game plans a fortnight back against South when they were able to strangle the Panthers, to keep them to four goals and still notch a 29-point win. Adelaide took advantage of some class inclusions to run Sturt off its feet to take full points for the first time in 2015. Led by Brad Crouch, Jarryd Lyons and Richard Douglas, Adelaide controlled much of the flow of the game. Coach Heath Younie would have been more pleased with scoring 22 goals, its highest collective output since joining the SANFL. Most key indicators would point to the Eagles taking this one comfortably but that mental attitude brought them undone in both encounters last year. Coach Michael Godden would be mindful of keeping the players fully focused to hold that break over the Magpies. The Eagles run was notably stifled last year by Adelaide but it is worth noting that a number of the better Adelaide players in those games will not front this time, such as Jason Porplyzia, Brent Reilly and Shaun McKernan. The Eagles’ ability to both lock down a game or win a pure shootout has not gone unnoticed by opposition coaches this year. But Godden will equally note the 22 goals from Adelaide against Sturt and will look to shut down its ability to move the ball quickly through the corridor. The home team should just prevail.

Not a pretty win but Socceroos coach happy

A

nge Postecoglou hates winning ugly - but in this case, he’ll make an exception.

The Socceroos coach says a tenacious 2-1 triumph against Kyrgyzstan is a mark of his team’s new-found maturity. “Sometimes you want things easy, but I love the fact that it’s hard,” Postecoglou said. “And the harder it is through this process, the better the team will come out the other end, provided we keep winning. “We’re growing as a team and every experience we have will make us better.” Postecoglou reckons the Socceroos of a year ago would have faltered in such a brutish battle in Bishkek. Australia overcame an unheralded opponent, a largely unknown city, a raucous crowd, bumpy pitch, and a primitive ground where they refused to shower post-match - sweaty players instead

returned to the team hotel to refresh.

“I’m happy because we have got through that experience and we have won the game,” said Postecoglou, who has a mantra of not just wanting to win, but wanting to win in style. “They (players) will just learn a hell of a lot playing in that sort of environment because we are going to have to go to places throughout Asia where that sort of atmosphere is common place. “And if you can deal with it ... you would much rather learn those lessons and grow by winning games of football. AAP

No curbing aggression

H

olden Racing Team driver James Courtney won’t be curbing his aggression any time soon as he fights for his second V8 Supercars Championship. Courtney won the title in 2010 and has his eyes on Craig Lowndes as his biggest competition as the Championship heads to Darwin this weekend.

500 in emphatic fashion and sits fifth on the Championship table. However, the 34 year-old has been involved in a number of incidents this year, including a clash with Will Davison in Tasmania and contact with teammate Garth Tander last round in Winton.

“I just really want to get this Championship (win),” Courtney said.

They won’t be stopping him from continuing his aggressive manner though in his push for more victories.

“Triple Eight have had way too long a run at wrapping up the Championship so it’s time we take them down.

“I want to win, I do whatever it takes to win and sometimes you have to be a little bit more aggressive,” Courtney said.

“Craig Lowndes has been really quick throughout the whole year and probably has done a little bit better job than his teammate (six-time champ Jamie Whincup) so I think Craig is still the one that we’ll be chasing.”

“But it has to be calculated and sometimes you make mistakes like I did at Winton when I took Garth out and that obviously wasn’t the right thing to do.

Courtney came out firing this season, winning the first Sunday sprint at the Clipsal

“We’re growing as a team and every experience we have will make us better.”

But with captain Mile Jedinak scoring in 60 seconds before the Kyrgzs touched the ball, and substitute Tommy Oar coolly slotting another in the second half, the Australians held their nerve in a victorious opening to their campaign to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

“It hasn’t affected the way I do things. I’ll still attack my racing as aggressively as what I normally do.”

Australia’s Mark Milligan (R) vies for the ball with Kyrgyzstan’s Mirlan Murzaev during the FIFA World Cup 2018 Group B qualifying football match. Photo: AAP

With a pair of podiums to his name at the Northern Territory track Courtney will be looking for his maiden Hidden Valley victory. “To come away with a result at Darwin, we’re going to have to have good power, good fuel economy and good tyre life and also good car speed, so it’s a lot of things,” he said. “I’m pretty excited going to Darwin, I think we could easily come away with a win so long as we all do our job properly and no one mucks up.” Teammate Tander, a multiple-race winner at the Darwin circuit, will be drawing on more than a decade of experience at the track himself as he continues to chip away at the Championship leaders, currently 61 points behind Courtney in sixth spot. Ford driver Mark Winterbottom remains the Championship leader, 12 points ahead of Lowndes. AAP

ALH Group division 1 Falcons do their own talking

T

he talk around the Channel 9 Adelaide Football League continues to centre on the form of Payneham Norwood Union.

ROCs host Henley on Saturday, with a win crucial to their finals’ aspirations. The likes of Paul Fantasia, Lachlan Surman and Damien Moyle regained some valuable touch last week in their punishing 130-point triumph over Portland, which they will need to display this week as well.

The Falcons returned to Division 1 with many believing they would either just hold their own or simply again struggle in the top flight of the competition. However, Garry McIntosh’s troops are, doing much better than that, sitting equal top alongside reigning premier Goodwood Saints.

The Sharks received a fright from Port District last week but held on to win by just three points. The Magpies and SHOC have seasondefining contests on Saturday, where success is a must if either wishes to maintain hope of playing finals while losses could place them back in the relegation mix.

Their resolve is what is winning them most favours at present, willing themselves to victory on a couple of occasions in trying circumstances. They did it again last week to record a solid 24-point victory over the then top side Tea Tree Gully, which had even taken the lead in the last quarter before the visitors hit back as has become their way. Lewis Klemm, Nick Reed and Toby Leiman did their own talking, running their opponents ragged through the middle. Now Payneham Norwood Union faces another top-of-the-table clash with the trip to Goodwood ahead. A win against the Saints on Saturday will really get tongues wagging. The Gullies will make their way to Salisbury North this week looking for a settling win.

Rostrevor OC will be wanting to keep Salisbury North within its sights as well in what is looming as a two-way battle for fifth spot.

Salisbury North will look to stretch itself against Tea Tree Gully to maintain its position in the top five. Photo: Jayson Vowles It could be a danger game for the visitors though as the Hawks try to secure their position in the top five and show they are still in the mix of major contenders. Rhys Clinton, Michael Eichner and Stephen Drainer are sure to take it up to another strong opponent this week, after steering their side to a handy 31-point victory over Sacred Heart OC.

It’s also important encounters for their opponents Adelaide University and the Thunder. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Adelaide airport division 2 Jets hit new heights

Their opponent this week St Peters OC continued its rise, leaping into the top five for the first time this year, accounting for Walkerville by 80 points.

U

nley Mercedes Jets proved that they were the ‘real deal’ last week to fly to the top of the Division 2 ladder.

In an absorbing encounter worthy of a top-of-the-table, it was the newcomers that showed the greater run and cleaner skills to win, defeating the seasoned Gaza by 11 points on its home deck. Andrew Osborne and Luke Crocker stood out among many for the Jets whose goal of reaching the top flight of amateur league football is a distinct possibility.

SPOC needs a big scalp to show it is still a major threat. Beating the Jets will certainly do that. The top two at this level actually comprises both elevated sides from Division 3 last season, with Modbury perched up high as well. The Hawks will host Broadview on Saturday in their push for high honours. SMOSH West Lakes was no obstacle for them last week, coming away with a very comfortable 108-point victory over the Lions, but clashes against the Tigers are usually much closer affairs.

Matt Fogden and Blake Marshall will face a stronger contest this week. Other matches appear more clear cut on Saturday when Gaza will be eager to rebound against Gepps Cross, Prince Alfred OC welcomes Walkerville around the corner to Park 9 and Scotch OC travels to West Lakes to confront the Lions. linders Park kickstarts its first game in three weeks when it hosts Mitcham. The Reds with a scheduled bye last week and the long weekend off before that, sit on four wins from their eight matches. Mitcham has found the going very tough in this division with just one win. Last week it fell to Athelstone by 64 points at home with Ben Geytenbeek, Steven Wyld and Simon Tucker among the best. The Reds look too accomplished here by about seven goals. Old Ignatians and Athelstone should produce a top game at Hunter Park. Iggies, fourth, lost to Pembroke Old Scholars by seven points after leading at each change. Angus Crowley led the way with Xavier Moore and Austin Murdoch. Athelstone is flying without a loss after nine rounds. Last

week the Raggies edged clear of Mitcham to win by 64 points with Thomas Clayton, Heath Fitzpatrick and Josh Allen starring. Tough match to pick but the Raggies look to be on track again by 20 points. Seaton Ramblers looks to be in for a tough day when it hosts PHOS Camden at Pedlar Reserve. The Rams are winless, last week crunched by Golden Grove by 123 points. Bradyn Wild, Shane Harris and Todd Gates were the mainstays. PHOS Camden is travelling nicely in second place with seven wins. Last week it was far too strong for Plympton, winning by 57 points away. Tom Clarke, Dylan Gamble (four goals) and Aaron Bergsma were among the leading lights for the Phantoms. It looks like another win for PHOS by 50 points.

Heritage Day 2015 Saturday 27th June 2015 @ 12:00pm All Life Members, Past Players, Past Officials and Supporters are invited to attend Replica 1900 Guernseys to be auctioned after the match, meals are available plus a DJ and more. Plympton has the home ground but Pembroke Old Scholars appear to have the edge in their clash. The Bulldogs made PHOS Camden work early in their game last week before losing by 57 points. The Kings showed that persistence could go a long way to winning games with a spirited sevenpoint away win against Old Ignatians. Fraser Pinkney, Ben Williams an Eljay Connors led the charge. The Kings should reign again by six goals. Golden Grove has the bye. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

Chics, Magpies in test of strength

k

ilburn and Salisbury will lock horns in one of the matches of the season with the winner a near certainty to win a double chance come finals time. Last week Kilburn, third, beat Eastern Park in a shootout by 10 points with 40 goals kicked between the pair at Blair Athol Reserve. Adam Clutton, Dylan Tippett and Scott Young (five goals) led the way with good support from Mark McCallum (five goals). Salisbury, second on the ladder, dished out a hiding to Kenilworth by 105 points with Michael Keenihan, Brad Horjus (six goals) and Alex Jolly playing well. Brett Herrmann was handy with four goals. Tough to call but Salisbury just may have the depth by 22 points. Eastern Park and Hectorville meet at Dwight Reserve with a win important to both for their finals’ hopes. Eastern Park kicked 19.14 but it wasn’t enough against Kilburn’s 21.12 last week with Corey Coad (seven goals), Ben McMullen and Brad Woodward playing well. Hectorville was too good for bottom side Glenunga, cruising in by 43 points away. Owen Giovine,

Paul Wootton and Luke Broadbent were among the stars. The Demons should be too strong by 40-50 points. North Haven and Westminster Old Scholars is another excellent match up at Largs North Reserve. The Magpies are unbeaten and handling most matches with ease. Last week it jumped out of the blocks quickly to beat Hope Valley by 38 points, the match fairly even after quarter time. Matthew Reed was outstanding with 11 goals and 65 goals for the season. Anthony Shaw and Mark Rowe also excelled. The Dragons battled hard but found Pooraka too strong last week with Matthew Newman, Jaran Blethyn (four goals) and Sam Wigg among the best. The Magpies should make it nine on end by 40 points. Pooraka looks too strong for ninth team Kenilworth at Lindblom Park. Pooraka’s best against the Dragons last week were Michel Baker, Brady Tidswell and Josh Simounds. Kenilworth was crushed by Salisbury by 105 points with Alex Buckley, Aaron Crolla and

Peter Diamandopoulos leading the way. The Bulls by 50 points. Glenunga, winless, hosts eight-placed Hope Valley in a must win for both sides. The Rams just can’t hold most sides to low scores, last week kicking 15.3 but conceding 21.14 to Hectorville. Tim Mitchell, Shane Walshe and Mark Roberts played well for the Rams. Hope Valley’s best in its 38-point loss to North Haven were Lee Duggan, Ren Miller and Benjamin Tonkin. Darren Mitchell kicked six goals. A case for either side but the Demons by 20 points. Eagles taking flight E lizabeth has continued its giant-killing run either side of the break, claiming the big scalp of top side Colonel Light Gardens last week after previously beating thirdplaced Rosewater before the bye.

The Eagles have risen sharply from seventh to fifth on the back of those two successes and can now look towards higher rungs on the ladder over the second half of the season. They receive a visit this week from Pulteney which is still trying to elevate itself from the relegation contest and Rosewater didn’t allow it do so last week, proving too strong at the finish to win by 17 points.

The Lions won’t accept consecutive losses so their attack on the ball should be much stronger on Saturday.

The Dolphins fell out of the top five following their disappointing 16-point loss to Para Hills and cannot afford to lose their finals grip at this point of the season. Blackfriars OS reclaimed the top mantle with the Lions’ loss and its own testing 15-point victory over bottom side Adelaide Lutheran. Para Hills will offer a bigger challenge this week so Sam Murphy and Matthew Rivett of the Hounds will need to be ready for a stronger opponent and front accordingly.

However, Elizabeth’s Jordan Stewart and Brayden Abbott fought hard to take the points from the Lions last week and with similar intensity should have the Navy Blues’ measure.

The top three will still be in the sights of Brett Evans and Paul Cree of the Big Reds so they won’t be letting the top side have it all its own way.

CBCOC faces Colonel Light Gardens at just the wrong time.

Rosewater will be another outfit wanting to gain more ladder security.

The Bulldogs handled everything Pulteney threw at it last week but a trip to Greenacres will pose more issues on Saturday. The Dragons’ slim finals hopes remain after their 144-point demolition of Woodville South and could be troublesome for the visiting Rosewater this week. Kicking 16 goals against the Cats last week will have Greenacres spearhead James ClarkRantasa yearning for more while Peter Smith (seven goals) will enjoy similar forward entries from teammates as well. Adelaide Lutheran will see Woodville South as a chance to gain its second win of the season when the two bottom sides meet this week.

estern-suburbs neighbours West Croydon and Lockleys face a key match at Fawk Reserve as the second half of the season kicks off. Last week the fourth-placed West Croydon beat Brahma Lodge by 71 points with Tim Horsman, Floyd Freeman and Jamie Curtis among the best. Ben Wiles led the scorers with four goals. Lockleys is travelling nicely in second place. Last week it led comfortably at each change to beat Trinity OId Scholars by 59 points away. Best players for the Demons included Simon Ascoli, Tom McDonough and Phillip Rosshirt. Daniel Voyzey kicked five goals. A tough game to weigh up but Lockleys looks to have the edge by 20-30 points. Mawson Lakes and Fitzroy face another crucial game at Mawson Lakes Oval with hopes for the top five still alive for both sides in eighth and sixth place respectively. Mawson Lakes fell to Central United at home by 61 points last week with Nathan Bruce-Gordon, Andy Carr And Joel Melican among the best. Fitzroy had the bye last week and plays its first game in three weeks. The

DIVISION 1 LADDER Lions look to have the edge but not by much, 18-26 points. Ingle Farms and Brahma Lodge have plenty to pay for in the fifth versus seventh clash at Rowe Park. Last week Ingle Farm was no match for Smithfield, going down by 57 points. Aaron Pligl, Stefan Raegar and Samuel Naylor led the way for the Bulldogs. Brahma Lodge found West Croydon too strong, crashing by 71 points away. The Tigers’ best were Beau Paterson, Ryan McKee and Shayne Scanlon. The home ground could be the difference here with the Bulldogs fancied by 24 to 38 points. Northern-based teams Trinity Old Scholars and Central United battle at Trinity College in a third versus bottom encounter. Trinity should be too strong here by 28 to 38 points. Smithfield has the bye.

Battle of the Unis

I

t will be a ‘battle of the unis’ this week when Adelaide University hosts Flinders University on Saturday.

The Blacks will be primed for the contest following their defeat of top side Houghton Districts, a side they have struggled against over the past few years. Despite the first half heading for a repeat of previous encounters, Adelaide University came out after the break with a fiercer attack on the ball, running harder through the corridor to beat the Raiders by 19-points. That confidence can be extended to bottom side the Crabs again at home to raise the likes of Daniel Trezise, Dominic Davis and Fergus Slape to an even higher percentage-boosting win this week. Flinders University presented stronger last week than it did the week before, pushing Angle Vale, only going down by 17 points. The Owls will face Houghton Districts this week, ladder leader’s first loss of the year so it will be tough going trying to hang onto fourth spot.

Angle Vale’s Chris Stephens, Ryan Davis and Joel Oxenham will look for more help to match the Raiders. Gaining the big triumph over Flinders University two weeks ago has turned Mitchell Park’s fortunes around as the Lions are now beginning to gel, producing another commanding performance last week. After a tight start to their contest against Salisbury West, they took control in the second half with Travis and Jarrad Hyde and Ben Weekley impacting on a 90-point thrashing of the Tigers. Mitchell Park is a finals’ contender now and its clash at home under lights against St Pauls OS on Saturday will verify their future prospects. Salisbury West has the bye.

15 SPORTSBEAT // 18 JUNE 2015

Trainer Chris Waller’s six year-old mare will get possibly her last chance on Saturday in the Group One Tatt’s Tiara (1400m) on the Gold Coast. It is looming as the last race start for the five-time Group Oneplaced star before heading out to breed future champions. Waller will be tracking the Royal Ascot preparations in England over the weekend but will have a keen eye on the last Group One race of the season in Queensland on Saturday. Catkins found the front early but was overran by Goldophin’s Hazard in the Group Two Dane Ripper Stakes at Doomben last start. She will again have to contend with the Flying Spur five year-old, who was destined for retirement after winning the Group Three Proud Miss Stakes in Adelaide in May but co-trainer Lee Freedman encouraged the owner to go to the Queensland Winter Carnival. The Tiara field is headed by Stradbroke winner Srikandi, boom filly Najoom (if she gains a start)

from the Gai-Waterhouse stable and Real Surreal who returned to form last week winning the Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic at Ipswich under new trainer Kelso Wood. Srikandi, also a daughter of Dubawi, will return to mares’ grade in the Tatt’s Tiara after beating Boban and Generalife to claim her maiden win at the top level in the Stradbroke. She has a perfect record from two outings on the Gold Coast circuit and the prospect of a soft track will help her chances. Brilliant filly Najoom has overcome a minor leg injury and is flying on the tracks. Following an impressive barrier trial win over 1000m at the Gold Coast on 9 June and subsequent flashy trackwork putting her back on track for the Tiara. With the forecast of wet weather, Avoid Lightning also comes into contention while Robert Smerdon’s Lumosty cannot be forgotten despite a poor Stradbroke run. Last start Listed Bright Shadow Quality winner Dublin Lass, trained by Peter and Paul Snowden, and Gerald Ryan’s Solicit must be given serious consideration as well.

CADDY: “Try heaven as you’ve already moved most of the earth.”
