Free agency is anything but!
W
hile Adelaide’s Patrick Dangerfield and Richmond’s Alex Rance have been of most interest in this year’s free agency speculation, the number of top names up for grabs in 2016 will have the whole football world talking. This is where the ideals of free agency in the AFL are wrong. Clubs chasing other clubs’ players during the season and offering extreme, and often overrated amounts of money to entice them away from their existing homes, is wrong. It cannot be what the AFL envisioned when introducing the system. It can only get worse with the players recently listed as potential free agents next year. Collingwood will be frantically trying to re-sign captain Scott Pendlebury and two of its vicecaptains, Steele Sidebottom and Nathan Brown as well as highly valued defender Alan Toovey and club great Dane Swan before other clubs can make some ridiculous offer.
Sydney and West Coast are significantly exposed.
What about the fans link to the players as well?
Stars like Jack Ziebell, Todd Goldstein and Lindsay Thomas of the Kangaroos and co-captain Kieran Jack, Dan Hannebery and Nick Smith of the Swans could be pursued, while leading goal-kicker Josh Kennedy and Brownlow medallist Matt Priddis are among six prospective free agents on the Eagles’ list.
Keeping young fans involvement in their club and through particular players must also be important for the AFL to maintain their interest in the game in future years.
With such class around it could get nasty. There will be nothing free about it either as large sums of money are bandied about by clubs as inducements to lure players their way. This leaves the players with all the bargaining chips as well. The lower clubs of any particular season, like Carlton this year, won’t even get a look in. Players chasing money and success over club loyalty these days, and keeping players is just as hard for these clubs. The trade period is there anyway for clubs and players to negotiate moves if so desired.
Likewise, North Melbourne,
With their favourite players swapping around so much, their interest could wane. Imagine how many kids loved Eddie Betts at Carlton – do they follow him to Crows? Who do they pick as another favourite? Maybe Jeff Garlett – oh, he’s gone too. Where would fans interests lie if this happens to Dangerfield, Hartlett or any other club’s player for that matter? The past successes of Brisbane, Geelong and Sydney were predicated by the heroes of these teams swallowing some pride and missing out on some dollars for the good of the team. Isn’t success more likely that way? So let’s get back to that! BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN
THUMBS UP
THUMBS DOWN
Aussie teen golf sensation Minjee Lee has achieved her first title success on the US LPGA Tour.
Soccer-related violence continues to be a scourge on the sport in this country.
Supported by former world number one Karrie Webb, 18 year-old Lee won the Kingsmill Championship following a rain-delay on Monday.
Even the game’s premier fixture, the A-League grand final, was not devoid of idiots who wanted to ruin the pleasure for the true die hard supporters of the competition.
There is no stopping the world’s number one in the men’s game either with Rory McIroy dominating the field to claim his second Wells Fargo Championship by seven shots. It was two weeks after taking out the World Matchplay Championship, and shattering records along the way – a course record 61 on Saturday and finishing with a tournament record 21-under.
The match was marred by a distinct few, interestingly linked to one particular club too, that police described as “hardcore, problematic” fans, which seems to be unique to soccer. We don’t see the same confrontations in the AFL with much bigger crowds.

Fully focused P
ort Adelaide was certainly off its usual game last week in losing to Brisbane at its hoodoo ground, the Gabba, but one can expect coach Ken Hinkley will have his players fully focused this week. Not only will the club want to send longstanding servant Kane Cornes off on a winning note, it is imperative that it turns its season around to remain a finals threat. The Power was anything but against the Lions in a contest that revealed more worrying signs than expected at the beginning of the season. It was almost as if the players had already won the game before going out to play and were already looking ahead to Sunday evening’s Cornes’ farewell against Richmond at the Adelaide Oval. Like a horse that can’t handle the Moonee Valley racetrack, Port showed it can’t win at the Gabba. Well, it learnt a valuable lesson that it must be focused to front for every contest in the AFL. Anything less will ensue disaster. Port clearly lacked its usual run and attack on the ball which it will need to regain quickly to keep its finals’ aspirations in check. Its work rate needs to lift, with captain Travis Boak saying the players’ standards had slipped. He has called on his teammates to regain the hunger and play like retiring Cornes has performed throughout his 300-game career. A few handy inclusions this week could bring back the toughness required in young hard nut Ollie Wines over his wrist injury and key defender Alipate Carlile, absent from the Brisbane match due to back tightness, improving the structure of the side. From the SANFL, Jake Neade could add some bite around the goal-front while Aaron Young and Paul Stewart would also be in the mix. Matt White, subbed out at the weekend, could be given a break still troubled with an ankle injury. But Hinkley could also ask for one more effort from the pacy wingman, especially against his old side, which then leaves Cam O’Shea, Kane Mitchell and debutant Karl Amon, although he looked capable in his first game, vulnerable when the line-up is picked. The timeslot shouldn’t be an issue with the Power facing its fourth Sunday twilight clash in a row. Adelaide has continued to get the job done against lesser opposition over the past few weeks, but it too will need to bring a harder

Too many turnovers this week will be severely punished by a Giants outfit that is starting to show the distinct class advantage they have been able to draft over recent years. Coach Phil Walsh knows that his players’ skill level still needs some improvement to match the top sides in the competition. Their efforts will need to be at their best against the youthful talents of the youngest side in the competition. An area where the Crows can exploit these youngsters is through increased pressure

Adelaide displayed what is required in its opening two games of the season against North Melbourne and Collingwood. If it can bring that type of intensity to this contest then it could come away victorious over the current match favourites in the Giants this week. Walsh will be looking for others to step up on Saturday though, with Brodie Smith (concussion) and Matt Jaensch (knee reconstruction) ruled out and leaving a vast experience gap in defence. Nathan Van Berlo could spend more time there for a more levelled head among the young Crow defenders. No doubt Walsh will have to come up with a creative answer down there for Jeremy Cameron too. Emerging midfielder Cam Ellis-Yolmen and forward/ruckman Josh Jenkins will be considered for a return as will Sam Kerridge, Brodie Martin and possibly Reilly O’Brien. Big man Sam Jacobs will certainly need assistance in ruck against Giants’ man mountain Shane Mumford, which could be Jenkins’ saviour or O’Brien comes in. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

AFL PREVIEW ROUND 8
BY DION HAYMAN
GEELONG V CARLTON
HAWTHORN V SYDNEY
Geelong and Carlton continue their duels at Docklands which has hosted their previous six meetings and 11 of their past 13. That suits the Cats with an extraordinary tale unfolding in this fixture since the city ground was first built in 2000. Whenever these teams meet at Docklands, Geelong wins. Whenever they meet elsewhere, Carlton wins. Since the ground opened, the sides have met 13 times at Docklands and Geelong has won them all. Since the start of the century, the sides have met three times at Princes Park and three times at the MCG, all resulting in Carlton wins. The upshot of all that is that Geelong has won the past six games between these sides. But the past five wins have been by only two, 12, 16, five and six points. Carlton’s last win was at the MCG in 2010.
Last season’s grand finalists Hawthorn and Sydney meet for the only time in this year’s minor round under lights at the MCG. Hawthorn captured last year’s premiership in convincing fashion with a 63-point win, 21.11 (137) to 11.8 (74). Jarryd Roughead booted five goals while Lance Franklin kicked four of the Swans’ 11. The Hawks led by 20 points at quarter-time, extending their lead at every change. The Hawks won by 10 points in their round 18 clash last year at the MCG after four goals from Roughead. Sydney’s only win in their past six against the Hawks came in their round eight clash last year at Homebush when it won by 19 points, 15.17 (107) to 13.10 (88). Kurt Tippett scored four goals. The Hawks lead 10 wins to five at the MCG having won their past four there since the Swans won the 2012 grand final.

ST KILDA V WEST COAST
FREMANTLE V NORTH MELBOURNE
West Coast has won its past four games against St Kilda and last year secured its first double against the Saints since 2006. In round three at Subiaco, the Eagles won by 25 points, 12.11 (83) to 8.10 (58), after overturning an eight-point deficit at half-time. In round 14 at Docklands the Eagles won by 33 points, 15.13 (103) to 10.10 (70), after wiping off a seven-point deficit at quarter-time. The Saints are Josh Kennedy’s toughest opponent. He has scored just 6.8 against them in seven games with a best of two goals. This game is at Docklands where their first meeting in 2000 was a high scoring draw with the Saints kicking 18.8 to 17.14. Both sides now have five wins from 11 games at the ground but the Eagles have won the past two. West Coast leads overall 24 wins to 17 with one draw.
Fremantle and North Melbourne have seven wins apiece from their past 14 games. Neither side has been able to string a hat-trick of wins together against the other since the Kangaroos won four in a row from 1999-2002. This will be the third straight match between the sides to be played at Subiaco. North won the past one in round six last year by 13 points. Fremantle led by two goals at quarter-time but had its advantage cut at every change before being outscored 3.3 to 0.5 in the final term to go down 10.14 (74) to 8.13 (61). The Dockers won in 2013 by 38 points, 10.7 (67) to 4.5 (29), as the Roos were held to their lowest score in this fixture. The sides both have six wins from 12 games at Subiaco but North leads overall 15 wins to nine.

GWS GIANTS V ADELAIDE
ESSENDON V BRISBANE
The Adelaide Crows have not yet been seriously challenged by GWS in five outings. The Crows have an average winning margin of 86 points against the Giants. Only one margin has been by less than 10 goals – that was 46 points in their first meeting at Football Park in 2012 when conditions included gusty winds and pouring rain. Two games have been won by more than 100 points with the biggest margin 135 points at the Sydney Showgrounds in 2013 in the match where Tom Lynch famously booted 10 goals. No Giant has kicked more than three goals in any game against the Crows. Their highest team score is just 72 points, scored in both games last year. The Crows won the first at Adelaide Oval by 65 points and the return game at the Showgrounds by 68. This will be the Crows’ fourth trip to Western Sydney.
Essendon has won three of its past four games against Brisbane including their only meeting last year at the Gabba. In a see-sawing game, the Lions led by three points at quarter-time, trailed by 13 at half-time, led by four at three quarter-time before going down by eight points, 9.11 (65) to 8.9 (57). Josh Green was the only man on the ground to score three goals, but for the losers. Brisbane won their only meeting in 2013 by 10 points at Docklands in a game which also saw several lead changes during the day. Dayne Zorko top scored with three goals. This match is scheduled as their only meeting of the season for the sixth year in a row. Both sides have five wins from 10 matches at Docklands. Overall, Essendon leads 23 wins to 16 with one draw.

Saturday 4.05pm, Metricon Stadium
Gold Coast has won its past two games against Collingwood by narrow margins after being thumped in its first two meetings in 2011-12. In 2013, the Suns won by seven points at Carrara, 13.7 (85) to 11.12 (78) with three goals from Jaegar O’Meara and Jared Brennan. Last year in round 16 also on the Gold Coast, the Suns won by five points, 11.14 (80) to 10.15 (75). The Pies drew level twice in the last quarter but despite kicking three of the last four goals of the game, came up short. Sam Day scored a career-high four goals for the home side. It was in this match that Gary Ablett sustained the serious shoulder injury that still troubles him. This will be Collingwood’s fourth away game in five clashes with the Suns.

MELBOURNE V WESTERN BULLDOGS Sunday 2.50pm, MCG
The Western Bulldogs have won nine of their past 10 games against Melbourne, including their past three in a row. The streak included the Bullies’ longest winning streak against the Dees of six matches from 2008-12. Last year, the Bulldogs won by 16 points at the MCG in round eight after four goals from Stewart Crameri and they won by six points at Docklands in round 15 with four goals from Jake Stringer. Melbourne’s last win was by three points in 2013 at the MCG in a match where the Demons led by 39 points at the last change. The Bulldogs have won five of their past six games at the MCG but Melbourne leads overall at the ground 44 wins to 27. These sides haven’t drawn since 1929 and haven’t played in a one-point result since 1981.

Port Adelaide ended a four-game winless streak against Richmond with a withering opening term against the Tigers in last year’s first elimination final at Adelaide Oval. Port kicked seven goals in the first 18 minutes and led 8.1 to 1.1 at quarter-time. It extended the lead to 69 points by half-time and 81 by the last change. The Power won 20.12 (132) to 11.9 (75) with Jake Neade and Jack Riewoldt the game’s top goal scorers with three apiece. Richmond had won their round 17 clash last year at Docklands by 26 points and the Tigers won by 41 points at Football Park in 2013. The sides drew at the MCG in the final round of 2012. Until last year, the Tigers had won their past three games against the Power in Adelaide. Overall, Port leads 15 wins to nine with one draw.

2015 sanfl state match preview BY CHRIS KENDALL More in-depth SANFL discussion FROM CHRIS KENDALL can be found at www.sanfl.com.au this season.
WESTERN AUSTRALIA V SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Saturday 3.45pm, Lathlain Park RADIO: Life FM 107.9 LIVE STREAMING: www.wafl.com.au/stategame State pride is on the line in Western Australia as the Croweaters travel to take on the Sandgropers. Encounters between the states have been fairly even over the years, but there will be added spice to the match with the return of South Australian legend Graham Cornes to the coaches box. In his first coaching role in 21 years, he has seized the role with eagerness, being seen at many local games to scout the best talent possible for the 24 man squad, which boasts some formidable talent. Western Australia will be led by former AFL assistant coach Darren Harris who has already flagged that he is aiming to play a fast, attacking style of football around the Lathlain Park expanse, which will suit a number of the hard running Sandgropers. How South Australia structures its attack will add plenty of intrigue. Expect Panther spearhead Brett Eddy to start near the goal square, with Subiaco veteran Darren Rumble his likely first opponent. Eagle Lachlan McGregor and Redleg Michael Newton should flank him, giving headaches for WA’s Ashton Hams and Tony Notte respectively. Ryan Willits looks an option for Cornes at centre half forward with West teammate Jason Porplyzia working on one flank and either Ben Hansen or Jonathon Beech on the other flank. Willits will be tested in the aerial battles by the likes of South Fremantle’s Blayne Wilson who has notched some big WAFL scalps this year. Subiaco’s Wayde Twomey, one of seven Lions in the squad, offers plenty of counter attack if allowed space. It may force SA into a defensive half forward role to negate his influence along with Justin Simpson. The midfield looks stacked with pace and heavy ballwinning ability.
Jason Porplyzia, one of the most experienced players in the SA squad, could be the x-factor against WA. Photo: AAP

Rooster Leigh Ryswyk should hold down one wing where West Perth’s Aaron Black looms as an ideal match in a highly entertaining battle. Either Eagle James Boyd or North’s Marlon Motlop working on the opposite wing against East Fremantle’s Liam Anthony will also be a battle royale with the former North Melbourne player in strong form. It’s hard to go past West’s Chris Schmidt in the pivot with his work at the clearances and in the contested situation among the premier in the competition at present. The South Australian defence brims with experience and a number of players who have worked well together at state level. How Cornes works a possible rotation of Norwood skipper Alex Georgiou and West’s Tom Keough in the key defensive role from the goal square will be interesting. Harris may opt to stretch the mobile talls by starting mercurial Subiaco forward Shane Yarran deep in attack where his pace and guile has led him to the top of the WAFL goalkicking this season. Eagle veteran Luke Jarrad’s penetrating left foot from the back pocket will set up many counter attacks, so WA will need to negate his influence. Double Blue Kory Beard looks a certainty to hold centre half back against Subiaco’s Lachlan Delahunty with Redleg Jace Bode and state stalwart Paul Thomas on the opposite flank. Bode may get first look at in-form South Fremantle forward Cory Dell’Olio, while Thomas would find Swan Districts’ Ryan Davis an intriguing proposition. Angus Kurtze’s ruck duties, likely to be shared with Willits, will be tested with the experience of East Perth’s Paul Johnson and West Perth’s Chris Keunen. The former, the reigning Simpson Medal winner for WA’s best against SA, has shown his nous around the ground. His ability to create in the air will be monitored carefully at his feet by Magarey Medallists Zane Kirkwood and South’s Joel Cross. Perth’s Aidan Tropiano’s strong early season has been duly recognised and his ballgetting ability and nous around goals will give SA plenty to consider at the stoppages. Reigning West Perth best and fairest Shane Nelson can turn a game quickly and his clearance work will be pivotal in the centre square. Cornes will be looking for versatility on the bench, particularly given the luxury of four, instead of the local three on the pine. With doubts over the fitness of Matthew Panos and Nick Liddle, Steven Summerton and Ian Callinan look set to represent the respective AFL Reserves of Port and Adelaide, while Keough and Georgiou may rotate from there along with Boyd and Motlop. State football always brings out the best in the combatants and this clash looks no exception. South Australia has held sway over the past 21 years, with Western Australia victorious only once in that period. But the first state encounter between the teams at Lathlain Park may carry some history of its own. The parochial Croweater in me leans toward us taking home the crown. But there is plenty of talent in the WA lineup, enough for it to just hold sway for mine.
TIP: Western Australia 1-12

Meninga rejects Qld ‘Dad’s Army’ claims
M
al Meninga isn’t laughing at the Dad’s Army gags.
Newly-resigned as Queensland coach, Meninga insists there is ample evidence that he is regenerating the Maroons, despite criticism that selectors have stuck with the same tried and true players a bit too long. The Queensland squad have an average age of 29 compared to the Blues’ 26. After Australia’s recent comprehensive Test loss to New Zealand there were fears the representative ranks had grown stale, and as the Maroons contributed nine players to that Kangaroos side, some pointed the finger at the undying loyalty of Queensland selectors. Meninga won’t hear of it.
“We are regenerating. That’s the thing,” Meninga said. “Half our team’s in their middle 20s. We’ve brought in Josh McGuire his time is right now, he’s 25.“ Bumping up Queensland’s average age is the all-conquering spine of halfback Cooper Cronk, five-eighth Johnathan Thurston, fullback Billy Slater and hooker Cameron Smith. The quartet, who have an average age of 31, guided Queensland to a run of eight straight series wins before they were trumped by NSW last year. McGuire is the only certain Queensland debutant for game one but if back-up utility Daly Cherry-Evans is ruled out due to injury, he could be joined by either Michael Morgan or Dylan Napa - depending on how Meninga
decides to respond to NSW’s fourforward bench.
McGuire has been waiting years for his opportunity but knew it was only ever going to come on one man’s say so. “My time was when Mal decided it was my time,” he said. “I wanted to play last year but it is what it is. Good things come to those who wait.” While Morgan’s red-hot Cowboys form suggests he is the most suitable replacement for CherryEvans, Meninga may opt for a likefor-like swap to combat the Blues’ contingent of big boppers. That would open the door for Roosters firebrand Napa, who belies his 22 years of age with his imposing frame and unforgiving physicality. “I like the way he plays,” Meninga said. “See how big he is and how enthusiastic he is. Djokovic ready for French Open
T
op seed Novak Djokovic has warmed up for the French Open with a comprehensive 6-4 6-3 victory over Roger Federer to claim his fourth Italian Open title. In the absence of seven-time champion Rafael Nadal, ousted in the quarter-finals, the Serbian produced a near flawless performance on centre court last Sunday to defend his title and hand Federer his fourth final defeat in Rome. With Roland Garros beginning on Sunday, Djokovic could emerge as the favourite to claim what is an elusive title in the French capital, especially in light of Nadal’s current woes on clay.
The Spaniard has won only one title on the surface this year, at Buenos Aires, and been beaten by Italian Fabio Fognini, Andy Murray, Djokovic and Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka in recent tournaments. Djokovic, meanwhile, has brought his game to boiling point this week to claim his fifth title of the season and take his head-tohead record over the Swiss ace to 21-18. On this performance, Djokovic will be hard to beat at the French Open, where Nadal’s bid for a 10th title could be compounded by a lack of top seeding. “The fact I’ve managed to win that many matches in a row ...
gives me a reason to believe I can do it again,” he said, after taking his winning streak to 22 matches. “I will keep going as long as I can... hopefully it’s gonna take me far in Roland Garros. It is and has been the priority of my career.” Federer, the only man to break Nadal’s formidable winning streak in Paris, in 2009, but who has lost four French Open finals to the Spaniard, hopes he will be among the challengers this year. “Physically, I know I’m in good form and I hope I give myself the chance to play better there than I have in recent years, “ he said. Power second on grid
W
ill Power will start from second on the grid at the Indianapolis 500 behind pole-sitter New Zealander Scott Dixon. Power, the defending IndyCar series champion, had a four-lap average of 226.350mph (364.275km/hr) to come in just behind Dixon’s 226.760mph (364.934km/hr) in qualifying for Saturday’s race. Dixon, of Target Chip Ganassi Racing, ended Team Penske’s streak of eight straight pole wins. The New Zealander took the lead in the first 25 minutes of action on the 2.5-mile oval. He waited for 29 other drivers to take their shot. None were faster. Simon Pagenaud will start on the outside of Row 1 after going 226.145. Both drive for Penske. It was a strange day at Indy. After Ed Carpenter’s car went airborne in practice, the third during the practice week where a car flipped, series officials took away the extra power boost and instructed drivers to run in race trim. The decision dropped qualifying speeds significantly. Most expected it to take an average between 233 and 234 to win the pole. Instead, the pole was down more than four mph from Carpenter’s top seed in 2014. F1 is at Monaco this weekend BY MICHAEL MAROT – AP

ostrevor OC and Salisbury North both turned around three-game losing runs to get their seasons’ back on track.
The 2014 and 2013 grand final runners-up can now show their true credentials to this year’s title and begin rising up the ladder to positions more befitting of their capabilities. ROCs had an important 39-point win over Port District while the Hawks were impressive in disposing of Adelaide University by 71 points. Now the two sides face-off against each other this week, with Salisbury North’s fifth spot on the line. Fourth-placed Rostrevor OC, the 2013 premier over the Hawks, must visit hostile territory though, which will be to Salisbury North’s advantage.
However, this will still be an entertaining clash as they both have shown they have flag potential. Goodwood Saints are probably still the title favourite, but this match will decide who is the next best in Division 1. Trent Melville, Adam Cockshell and Blake Helyar continue to be a force up front for Tea Tree Gully and their finishing will be telling again this week. The Saints experience got the better of Sacred Heart OC last week in a tough 13-point victory. On Saturday they host bottom side Portland, which showed it could match most sides but still just can’t manage it for a full four quarters. The Thunder will definitely find its first win of
Key players will again be Luke Manuel, James Butterworth and Jack Nelligan along with Heath Commane in the goal square for ROCs and Matthew Sharpe, Rhys Clinton and the Hood boys, Michael and Brad, for the Hawks.
Goodwood’s Ben Holzbauer, Jacob Hughes and Lou Whitelock will be ensuring that it’s not this week. It’s perhaps time to give Payneham Norwood Union more credence, after it upset the previous top side Henley last week. The Falcons were ahead all day and held on in a tight finish by just eight points. Now at the heels of the top three they will be out to add Adelaide University to their list of victims on Saturday. Cameron Milne, Lewis Klemm and Tom Langford have been the catalysts to Payneham Norwood Union’s advance up the ladder. Port District and Sacred Heart OC meet in a crucial clash this week to keep their finals’ prospects alive. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN
The table top encounter between Tea Tree Gully and Henley should be another exciting contest on Saturday. The Gullies became the only unbeaten side at this level after defeating Portland by 52 points, but really only got on top in the final quarter, and the Sharks experienced a shock loss to Payneham Norwood Union.

odbury remains the only unbeaten side in Division 2 after achieving success in the top-of-the-table clash against Gaza last week. Straight kicking for goal benefited the home side in a tight contest against the Eagles. We can be assured of more similar contests between these two over the course of the season, even in the big one possibly. The Hawks prevailed mainly thanks to the efforts of Kyle McNaughton and Tim Worden, but the whole team contributed to maintain their current record. They now head to St Peters to face a beleaguered outfit at present. SPOC is really struggling to display any of the talent that is in its squad and the season is slowly getting away from it. A sobering 65-point loss to Prince Alfred OC suggests it might not be up to it this year. On the other hand, the Reds proved that they will be a threat and should continue
their run against SMOSH West Lakes on Saturday. Following a tough contest in the first half against its college rival, Prince Alfred OC took control after the main break, kicking 13 goals to four with Simon Potts and Ben Gazzola dominant. The Lions remained near the base of the ladder, on just one win, after finding Unley Mercedes Jets too strong.
top three on the ladder. Scotch OC will be ruing its wayward goalkicking last week, but should be able to rebound against Walkerville this week. The confidence of Cats’ Arlen Kaesler and Richard Pendle would have been boosted after managing their first triumph of the season with a much-needed 27-point win over Gepps Cross.
Gaza will resume its neighbouring rivalry with Broadview this week.
The Rams’ first win doesn’t look like coming this week either with Unley Mercedes Jets visting.
The Tigers snatched a close one from Scotch OC’s grasp, winning by just two points.

Saturday’s match-of-the-round could be a similar type of tussle for Broadview. It will call on Rian Hornhardt and Judd Robson to set the tone again this week if a home victory is to be the outcome. Last week’s win gave the Tigers a handy buffer in fifth spot, now two games ahead of Scotch OC, and also still in touch with the

estern-suburbs clubs Flinders Park and Seaton Ramblers will be desperate for success when they meet at Flinders Park on Saturday. The Reds have three wins on the board, while the Rams are yet to break through for their first win of the season. Last week Flinders Park found Pembroke Old Scholars too strong when they lost by 59 points at Haslam Oval. Dion Fiegert, Hayden Martinello and Kieran Johanson led the way for the Reds. Seaton Ramblers also found the going tough, falling to Plympton by 60 points at Pedlar Reserve. Todd Gates, Callan Annett and Bradyn Wild were among the leading lights for the Rams. The Rams are not far off a win but the Reds should have the edge at home. Old Ignatians and Golden Grove sit third and eighth on the ladder respectively. But their match at Hunter Park could be closer than ladder positions indicate. Old Iggies had the bye last Saturday but their previous match showed spirit to get over the Rams in
the second half to win by 25 points. Golden Grove proved far too strong for Mitcham last week, home by 92 points at Harpers Field. Matthew Stent (three goals), Jared Coffee (seven goals) and Corey Pressler led the way. Iggies go in this week favoured to keep the winning run going. Athelstone is flying on top of the ladder and its match against Pembroke Old Scholars at Max Amber Sportsfield should be a beauty. Last week the Raggies beat the previously unbeaten PHOS Camden by three pints at Camden Oval after trailing by two points at the last change. Matthew Mauriello, Daniel Sullivan and Michael Newell were among the best. Pembroke Old Scholars led Flinders Park all day to win by 59 points at Haslam Oval last week. Alex Holbrook stood out with six goals, while Fraser Pinkney and Eljay Connors contributed strongly. The Raggies should back up with another good effort to hold the number one place on the ladder. Mitcham and PHOS Camden are eighth
and second respectively on the ladder and that should be significant this week at Price Memorial Oval. The Hawks were no match for Golden Grove in their 92-point loss last week. Best players included Simon Tucker, Samuel Clark and Daniel Hardy. The Phantoms should come out firing this week after their narrow loss to the Raggies at home last week. The Phantoms were best served by Sam Inglis, Tristan Shaw and Ryan Reavley last week. Depth should be the key to a Phantom win this week. Plympton has the bye this week. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

Bulls keen to put Hounds off the scent
I
t’s been a tough start to the season for Pooraka and Hectorville with just two wins each from six rounds. Last week Pooraka could not hold the Eastern Park defence, conceding 21.12 (138) to 13.13 (91) at Dwight Reserve. The Bulls’ best were Chris Adams (three goals), Drew Hosking and Jonathan Lewis. Hectorville was no match for Salisbury in their game at Daly Oval, the Hounds crashing to an 81-point loss. Jake Mazzone, Julian Leek and James Boxall led the way for the Hounds. Pooraka should be too strong here. Kilburn has a chance to edge into the top three when it hosts winless Glenunga this week. Cody Gill, Adam Clutton and Alex Brackstone were among the best players last week. Glenunga was overrun by North Haven at Webb Oval, losing by 83 points. Jason DalCorobbo, Luke Francis and Andrew White were key players for the Rams. The Chics by at least six goals here.
North Haven and Eastern Park are two of the form sides of the competition and should produce an absorbing battle at Largs North Reserve. The Magpies scored at least five goals a quarter in their win against Glenunga last week with Matthew Reed starring with 10 goals. Ryan Summerton, Mark Rowe and Ryan Adams were among the best players. Eastern Park led all day against Pooraka last week to win 53 points at home. Brad Woodward (six goals), Maurice Freeman (six goals) and Marc Weber were among the best. The Magpies could just hold their unbeaten run. Kenilworth and Westminster Old Scholars battle at St Mary’s Park in what could be a close finish. Best for the Kookaburras last week were Matthew Hey, Nathan Ryles and Peter Diamandopoulos. The Dragons lost to Kilburn by 24 points after trailing by 40 points at the last change at Glandore Oval. Trent Carter was best,
while Jack Lockett and Craig Dand were solid players. The Dragons by three goals. Second hosts sixth when Salisbury takes on Hope Valley. The Magpies’ best last week in the win against Hectorville were Geoff Tume (three goals), Michael Keenihan and Ryan Paget. Hope Valley held on for a draw against Kenilworth with Luke Bollmeyer (four goals), Luke Steele and Lee Duggan (three goals) among the best. After two losses themselves, the Bulldogs dealt the Hounds their first defeat of the season by 41 points to settle its position on the ladder.
Elizabeth will be keen to build on its strong showing of last week, where Scott Webber (seven goals) and Ben Taylor were influential.
Currently fourth, just behind Para Hills on percentage, they would welcome a big victory against bottom-placed Woodville South on Saturday to jump back into the top three.
Blackfriars OS will be out to respond against Pulteney this week after last week’s first loss.
More standout performances from David Murray and Hugh Johnson-Schroeder will have Rosewater well on its way. The Eagles will face a tough encounter hosting

With some of their best sitting the sidelines, it required the likes of Alex Brown and Daniel Scott-Collings to step up when it counted for the Lions to pull away for a 24-point victory. itzroy and Central United will not only battle for the points but to see which Lion stands taller. Both clubs have the lion as their club mascot with the Fitzroy version going in to the clash with three wins, while Central is yet to win. Last week Fitzroy was thrashed by Lockleys by 103 points with Paul Newbery, Thomas McCue and Mark Frampton among the best. Central United also crashed, going down to Smithfield by 113 points. Troy Clausen, Jake Ephgrave and Thomas Porter were solid. Fitzroy should be too strong here. Mawson Lakes and Brahma Lodge are eighth and seventh respectively on the ladder and should produce a tight contest. Mawson Lakes pushed Ingle Farm to an 11-point result last week with Darren King, Andy Carr and Lachlan Kennett leading the way. The Tigers had the bye last week and will be keen to make it three wins for the season against the winless Saints. Smithfield and West Croydon should be evenly matched at Smithfield although the Panthers are unbeaten going in to the round.
DIVISION 1 LADDER The Panthers smashed Central United by 113 points last week with Daniel Cook, Michael Ashby (nine goals) and Daniel Marston leading the charge. West Croydon, in third place, was too strong for Trinity Old Scholars to win by 43 points. Jacob Sumner, Ben Wiles and Luke Woodcock led the way. The Panthers should be prowling again after this match. Trinity Old Scholars and Ingle Farm, with three wins each, are separated by .08 percent and that should set the tone for a tight match at Trinity College. Last week Trinity fell to West Croydon by 43 points. Angus Lemmon, William Wheeler and Alex Cotter battled strongly for Trinity. Ingle Farm won by 11 points at home against Mawson Lakes. Ben Smart, Braden Cranwell and Wade Matthews were among the mainstays. Home ground just swings it to the Lions out north.

This will please the amateur league hierarchy who have been striving for a more even competition across all division for few years now. They seem to be getting it right if last week’s results are anything to go by and that’s exciting football for all to enjoy. St Pauls OS found it hard to shake off a determined Salisbury West, but held sway to record its fifth victory of the season, winning by 10 points.
need to ensure Ryan Smiech is well supplied in front of goal again this week. Blacks’ trio Daniel Gardiner, Joe Hill and Andrew Riley will need to offer plenty of run and outwork their opponents to come away with a crucal victory. Houghton Districts continues to dictate terms at this level and was dominant against Flinders University, giving the stragglers a punishing 95-point hiding. Mitchell Park could face the same if Cameron Shutz, Jai McMurtrie and Josh Davis continue their stellar season form.
Similarly Adelaide University had a tussle on its hands to overcome Angle Vale away, before finishing 14-point victors at the weekend.
The Crabs remain at home for a second week, with Salisbury West coming to Flinders Uni on Saturday.

Our Boy Malachi and Charlie Boy have been the big movers in early betting for Saturday’s feature. After Charlie Boy’s last start win in the Group Three BRC Sprint, he has firmed considerably from $41 into $13. Our Boy Malachi is $5.50 equal favourite, with Srikandi who has been the best backed runner for the Doomben sprint event. A slow start cost Srikandi any chance in the BTC Cup but her trainer Ciaron Maher is confident she can bounce back in her next Group One assignment. Maher said Srikandi has done well since that outing and will go into Saturday’s race in excellent order. Temple Of Boom is fit and raring to atone for finishing second to his half-brother Spirit Of Boom in last year’s edition of the race. Trainer Tony Gollan is really happy with the horse after some challenges in getting him right. “It took a few runs, because he’s a bit older, to get his fitness back up and his work (on Tuesday) indicates he’s right back on track,” Gollan said. “His work was really sharp and he’s really in tip-top shape for Saturday. “I don’t think there’s any real standout in the race, they’re a
fairly even bunch of horses as it was shown the other day in the BTC Cup,” he said. Sydney’s Joe Pride is confident his in-form galloper Rock Sturdy, who was second to Charlie Boy in the BRC Sprint, is set for a big Group One run. Pride admits that the runners from the traditional lead-up race, the BTC Cup, are the form horses to beat. “I don’t know if I’m confident we’ve got the measure of [the BTC Cup graduates], but I’m happy to be competing against them at this stage,” he said. “Full credit to Charlie Boy [in the BRC Sprint], but if you swap the barriers you swap the results. I think my horse was a better run than [Charlie Boy’s], but we’ll find out on Saturday I suppose.” Chris Waller could be the trainer worth following. He will have his usual big assault on the Doomben meeting in a bid keep up an excellent winning strike rate of almost 20 percent in Group and Listed races his stable has compiled at the Queensland carnival over the past decade. Waller has added much to the intrigue to the Doomben 10,000 by lining up his triple Group One winner Boban and a new import Flamingo Star, which has a maiden win over Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist in 2012, without lead-up races.
IT’s a joke “WHY DO SCUBA DIVERS fall off their boats backwards?”’ Paddy asked. “If they fell forwards they’d still be on the bloody boat!” Seamus replied. MY WIFE SAID TO ME “If you won the lottery, would you still love me?” I said: “Of course I would. I’d miss you, but I’d still love you.”.
