Friday turn offs

I

t has been an age old of problem, which doesn’t have to be.

Below-par contests on a Friday night have been raised as an area of concern among the AFL hierarchy. It has come to a head over recent weeks in particular with the performances of Carlton and it being involved in three of the past five Friday night encounters. Even the TV commentators have been struggling to show any interest in building up the matches and audiences would have been dropping off as well, which would not be pleasing Channel Seven bosses, especially with TV rights up for bidding again soon. The AFL proposes a new radical season fixture that would see game times decided only a month or so out to ensure blockbuster clashes are placed on Friday nights.

EDITED BY Stephen O’Loughlin

Club CEOs are right in saying this wouldn’t work because of their desire to sell 11-game memberships.

fans who need to be able to plan around a programmed season and have some form of advance notice of when games will be played. In fact, they really don’t have to go this far. It is simply a case of being fairer to all clubs and sharing the Friday night games around. Looking at this year’s fixture, as usual, it is heavily weighted to Victorian sides benefiting from getting Friday nights. Collingwood and Richmond have six, Carlton has five, and Geelong and Hawthorn have four. Then there are the clubs like Brisbane, Western Bulldogs and the two newbies Gold Coast and GWS that don’t even get a Friday night match. There are also some Thursday night games which kicked off the weekend where we saw Carlton and Richmond open the season. Coming up we have matches between Adelaide and Hawthorn, Fremantle and Collingwood, Sydney and Port Adelaide, and the Power and the Magpies.

The solution is simple. Every side should get two Friday nights per year, one at home and one away, over the first 18 weeks of the season. Then the final four weeks can be a reward for the top sides from the previous year or even just make these flowing rounds to be decided closer to the date. Round 23 is already scheduled as such and the finals to follow are likewise. Overall, this would be a fairer system where all sides can reap the benefits of Friday night games. The AFL seems to always look for the complicated fix instead of the easier option when it comes to the fixture. Maybe this gives it an excuse when it becomes all too hard to change, so it doesn’t. This format doesn’t give the league that excuse. At the same time, it talks about equality. But does it really want it, considering the rewards it must receive by programming the Carltons, the Collingwoods, the Hawthorns and the Richmonds on Friday nights with their fan bases? Wouldn’t fairness be far more important anyway? Then the AFL can start considering equalisation.

Despite its long-term viability it is still a work in progress. Basketball SA CEO Mark Hubbard said that it was crucial the Lightning still had a presence in the WNBL and was proud to be partnering with an organisation that has such a strong and positive community message.

After the disappointment of being penalised two minutes for gaining assistance from an Aussie rider on another team when puncturing on Stage 10 cost him any chance of winning the tour, Porte suffered knee damage in a crash on Stage 13 and the pain got the better of him after the Stage 15 time trial. He will get himself right to ride support for his friend Chris Froome in the Tour De France in July.

Time for action A

ttention can now return to on-field matters for Port Adelaide this week, with its failings in the spotlight.

The off-field distraction of Kane Cornes’ retirement is behind it so players must look within to turn around their flagging season. It’s time for action. Last week’s publicity took the focus away from why the Power had lost its previous two matches. The problems began to rise against West Coast in round six, but again it was just waved away as the usual letdown after a Showdown. The clubs’ performances have now presented coach Ken Hinkley with his toughest challenge since joining the club more than two years ago. He will no doubt be instilling in his playing group that it must reproduce its long kicking game and regain its gut-running efforts of the past two seasons. It’s not like it hasn’t been there at all this season. They showed it in the way they pressured reigning premier Hawthorn only six weeks ago. It has just gone missing in recent weeks. It’s all mental, which might be the hardest area for Hinkley to break through. Hinkley also needs to determine how he wants to structure his side for the trip to Alice Springs to face Melbourne on Saturday. With another ruckman in Patrick Ryder, the setup of the side has been different to past seasons and this may have unsettled things a touch. He may have to look at going back to the one recognised ruck and use Justin Westhoff in his floating role more to bring him into the game as well. It would be a big call to make but it may allow another running player to be added to the side. His only issue with doing this though is the loss of Jackson Trengove (ankle) who would have assisted the big men in defence. Tom Clurey probably comes in as Trengove’s replacement while Aaron Young, Paul Stewart and Jake Neade will come under consideration too. Could it also be a hangover from the tough opening draw? Adelaide has similar issues around putting its opposition under pressure. It was simply outrun by the pace and constant wave of attacks by GWS last week. Players just couldn’t get their hands consistantly on any of

3 SPORTSBEAT // 28 MAY 2015

their opponents to tackle them. Coach Phil Walsh will also be enforcing that games go for four quarters, bolding noting that the start time is 7.10pm this week and not 10 minutes later. A repeat lacklustre start against unbeaten Fremantle at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night could turn ugly for the home fans. The key to upsetting the ladder leader will be the pressure Adelaide brings to the contest and restricting the Dockers ball movement. Indigenous round could spark livewire forward Eddie Betts to put on another show for fans, while it will be up to his teammates to contain the likes of Nathan Fyfe, Michael Barlow, Matthew Pavlich, and Lachie Neale. Selection will be interesting with Sam Kerridge (ankle) and Rory Laird (concussion) unlikely to be risked, which opens to door for Brodie Smith and Ricky Henderson while Brodie Martin, Kyle Hartigan and even James Podsiady, to add marking strength to the forward line, could be in Walsh’s thinking. here’s been plenty of fingerpointing in the sorry saga of Mick Malthouse’s sacking at Carlton.

But if Malthouse was honest maybe he should have a good look in his own backyard. Did he join Carlton for the right reasons after being phased out as senior coach at Collingwood? Was he correct in pushing for good mate and injury-prone ex Magpie Dale Thomas to join the Blues on a big salary? Should Malthouse have taken a less aggro stand against some of the media? Why did he say the team had gone from a possible top-four side to needing to rebuild after a few days? Was he simply out of touch with the modern game?

AFL PREVIEW ROUND 9

BY DION HAYMAN

SYDNEY V CARLTON

MELBOURNE V PORT ADELAIDE

Sydney has won its past four games in a row against Carlton – the last one by 71 points last year at the SCG in round 17. Sydney’s longest winning streak against the Blues is 12 straight wins from 2001-09. Last year, Carlton trailed by only seven points at half-time but was mugged with 10.4 to just 0.1 in the third quarter. Lance Franklin finished with six goals and Sam Reid four. Franklin now has 23 goals in his past five games against the Blues. Carlton has only won once in 10 games at the SCG since 1993. That was in 2011 when it scored a 16-point win, coming from 14 points behind at half-time. Eddie Betts finished with four goals. Sydney leads 13 wins to nine at the SCG since the Swans moved to Sydney in 1982. The Blues go into this game with a new coach in John Barker.

Melbourne and Port Adelaide resume hostilities at Traegar Park in Alice Springs where they met last year for the AFL’s first premiership match at the venue. Port didn’t have things all its own way and led by just four points at three quarter-time but eventually prevailed by 20 points, 14.11 (95) to 11.9 (75), before 5655 fans. Jay Schulz, Robbie Gray and Justin Westhoff all scored two goals. The Power had another battle on its hands in round 18 at Adelaide Oval when it led by just two points at the final change and hung on to win by three, 10.12 (72) to 10.9 (69). Dom Tyson’s goal at the 21-minute mark put the Dees ahead before Schulz won the game for the Power at the 26-minute mark. Port has now won a club record five straight games against Melbourne since the Dees’ last win in 2011 in Darwin.

Gold Coast has come up short in all six previous encounters with Hawthorn. Only once have the Suns threatened and that was in the final round of 2011 when the Hawks took a makeshift side up to Carrara and won by nine points after coming from 11 points behind at half-time. Last year, the Hawks won both matches comfortably. They were back on the Gold Coast in round four and came home with a 99-point win after holding the Suns goalless in the final term. Jack Gunston kicked five goals and Jarryd Roughead four. In round 15, Hawthorn won by 53 points after kicking 12 goals to three in the middle two terms. Luke Breust and Luke Hodge both finished with three goals. Their only other meeting in Launceston was in 2011 when the Hawks won by 71 points with Breust and Shane Savage scoring four goals.

GWS beat the Western Bulldogs for the first time when they last met in round 23 last year at Docklands. GWS led by 26 points at halftime but the Bulldogs fought back to lead by nine points, five minutes into the last term. The Giants responded and in a fluctuating last term, a draw seemed likely before Devon Smith goaled from outside 50 with just 16 seconds to play. It finished 18.7 (115) to 15.19 (109) after five goals from Will Hoskin-Elliott. Jake Stringer and Stewart Crameri both kicked four goals for the Dogs but ultimately, seven rushed behinds counted against the home side. The Bulldogs had won their three previous meetings by 42, four and 27 points with all of those games played at Manuka Oval in Canberra. This will be former Bulldog captain Ryan Griffen’s first match against his old side while ex-Giants Tom Boyd is expected to miss the clash.

RICHMOND V ESSENDON Saturday 6.50pm, MCG

Richmond and Essendon reconvene for their annual ‘Dreamtime at the G’ fixture. These sides have remained evenly matched in recent years with six wins apiece from their past 12 outings. But none of them have been close since the Tigers won by five points at the MCG in 2009. In nine matches since then, the smallest margin has been 16 points with six games decided by 29 points or more. Last year, Essendon won by 50 points in round 11 with five goals from Ben Howlett. The loss left the Tigers with four wins and six losses and seemingly out of finals contention. However, Richmond prevailed in its round 20 encounter against the Bombers by 18 points, winning its sixth straight game for the first time since 1994. It brought the Tigers back to a 9-10 record which they would eventually improve to 12-10, capping a remarkable late season run with a finals berth.

Fremantle has won its past three games against Adelaide, equalling its longest winning streak against the Crows which was previously achieved between 2003-04. The Crows’ last win against the Dockers was in the 2012 second semi-final at Football Park which they won by 10 points after trailing by 29 points early in the second term. Since then, the Dockers won by seven points at Football Park in 2013, by 22 points at Subiaco later that year and by 40 points at Subiaco in round 12 last year. Freo won that game, 12.18 (90) to 7.8 (50), despite trailing by two points at half-time. However, it kicked 9.9 to 3.3 in the second half to run away with the game. Matthew Pavlich kicked three goals. The Dockers have failed to kick 100 points in any of their past eight games against the Crows yet have won four of them. Curiously, Taylor Walker has kicked more goals against Fremantle than any other club (26 in eight games).

Brisbane has won its past two games against St Kilda for the first time since 2007-08. The Lions haven’t won three in a row against the Saints since 2004-05. Last year, the Lions were the Saints’ opponent at the one-off game in Wellington. Brisbane led at every change and by 19 points at the last one but Rhys Stanley tied the scores at the 11-minute with the Saints’ fourth goal of the term. It was to be their last though as the Saints could muster just another four behinds while Jack Redden’s goal at the 17-minute mark proved decisive. Brisbane won 12.10 (82) to 11.13 (79) before 13,409 people. These sides have now met 42 times with Brisbane leading 22 wins to 20. The Lions lead 14 wins to five at the Gabba but the Saints have won three of their past four there.

Collingwood has won six of its past eight games against North Melbourne including their only meeting last year in round five at the MCG. The Magpies jumped to a 19-point lead at quarter-time, extending that to 33 points by the main break before winning by 35 points, 13.15 (93) to 8.10 (58). Travis Cloke booted four goals – one of only two games for the year where he produced such a return. Collingwood leads North 104 wins to 50 with two draws. At the MCG though, things are a little different. North shades the Pies 14 wins to 13 with a draw, famously in the 1977 grand final (North won the replay by 27 points). The sides have drawn once since then, at Victoria Park in 1988. But only three of their past 37 games have been decided by less than a kick.

The Cats led by four goals at quarter-time and by 56 points at half time. Game over. In round six last year at Geelong, the Cats kicked exactly the same score and held the Eagles to even less. Geelong won 16.11 (107) to 4.8 (32) with three goals each from Tom Hawkins, George Horlin-Smith and Selwood. When Jack Darling kicked the Eagles’ fourth goal at the 27-minute mark of the first term, the visitors trailed by two points, 4.3 to 4.1. Little did anyone know it would be their last for the afternoon. It was the first time since 2006 that any side had been held goalless for the last three quarters. It was the Eagles’ lowest score against Geelong and it squared the ledger between these sides at 23 wins apiece with one draw.

SANFL PREVIEW ROUND 8 More in-depth SANFL discussion FROM CHRIS KENDALL can be found at www.sanfl.com.au this season.

BY CHRIS KENDALL

WEST ADELAIDE V SOUTH ADELAIDE

CENTRAL DISTRICT V ADELAIDE

It’s third hosting fourth in what should be a great indication of where both of these teams sit in the overall scheme. After an indifferent 2014 and some key inclusions, there is no question that West has adapted well to coach Mark Mickan’s style and is causing real headaches for opposition with its number of attacking options. The Bloods’ slick ball movement, precise disposal and high scoring rate sends an ominous warning to those who underestimate them. South’s defence concedes an average of 71 points a match, against a West attack averaging 110 points a match, so this will be a real test of the Panthers’ resolve and ability to shut down the likes of Aaron Fielke, Jonathon Beech and Jason Porplyzia while kicking a winning score of its own. The Panthers need more talls in attack to take the load from Brett Eddy, as they enter the forward 50 plenty of times but tend to rely on crumbing forwards when Eddy is contained. At home, West looks hard to hold out and should move into second spot for at least 36 hours.

Despite some narrow misses, the ledger still sits frustratingly at 1-5 for the Bulldogs. The younger players have clearly indicated their willingness to buy into coach Roy Laird’s game plan, but their confidence needs a win to keep the spirits high. Central still plays in fits and starts at times, but when allowed the space to move freely around Elizabeth Oval, it can work the ball quickly into the forward 50, but it does need more attacking options outside of Bryce Retzlaff and Trent Goodrem The Bulldogs’ more experienced campaigners need consistent support from the younger players, but oddly, it seems almost the opposite with Adelaide. Some of their older players are coming in and out of the contest, while top-up players like Charlie Molyneux, Matt Spencely and Luke Carey have been solid contributors. Adelaide is still to taste SANFL victory in 2015 and it too has had a penchant for playing in fits and starts. This should be a close one, but will favour Central to bank the two points.

PORT MAGPIES V GLENELG

A season that promised plenty for North has spiraled downwards rapidly, as it sits 1-5 and already looking unlikely to see finals action. Players are looking bereft of confidence which can’t bode well for the rest of the season. No such issues for the Redlegs with a 6-1 record atop the ladder. The challenges for North in this encounter are all around the park and this will really stretch an outfit already undermanned through injury and form. The encouraging aspect for coach Ken McGregor is that a number of his less experienced players are taking their opportunity and responding, such as Kym Edwards and Heath Caldwell, indicating their desire to turn things around at Prospect. Whether there are enough teammates willing to join them will be the thing against the SANFL benchmark. Some of the lesser known names at The Parade, such as Pat Levicki and Henry Cross are seizing their chances too and making it harder for the opposition to shut down all options. These clubs have shared great battles, on paper this doesn’t appear to be one of them.

The Magpies found their mojo against Adelaide with a devastating second half to take the points at Balaklava, but still don’t look to be the same dominant force of 2014. No question that some injuries at AFL level have hurt their SANFL options, but allowing for that, they don’t seem to have the same freedom of movement and ability to score as quickly as they did last year. Glenelg’s 2015 season is slowing sinking to an abyss, but coach Matthew Lokan should derive a degree of encouragement from the Tigers still having 22 scoring shots, even with the loss of Clint Alleway’s firepower. While Glenelg is a work in progress, it is hard to make a case for it here. Fans will point to last year’s final round victory, but that was against a Magpies that looked to have shut up shop to focus on the major round. Port needs to start building wins if it is to make another grand final run. Some younger Tigers like Darcy Bailey are showing support to the club’s young leaders such as Brad Agnew in lifting their work rate, but the class edge is still too apparent. Too many factors in Port’s favour here.

In a match that sees second hosting sixth, this could have some ramifications on several sides’ finals prospects. Already three games and considerable percentage clear of seventh-placed Central, a Sturt victory here could almost close the door on the pack making a run for the major round. The Eagles will be eyeing top spot, being one match behind Norwood, but more than six percent clear and the latter percentage situation may become crucial as the season progresses. The Double Blues have had a habit of spoiling the party at Woodville in recent times, winning the past three encounters at the ground. Ruckman Fraser Thurlow will be better for an encouraging first-up run, but facing the league’s leading hit-out team will give him a stern test. A number of the key indicators point to Sturt here, apart from the crucial one of scores conceded. The home team should just prevail.

‘Yellow subs’ set to surface in Adelaide

D

efender Dylan McGowan has assured that Adelaide United will be prepared for a tough match against well-placed La Liga side Villarreal CF at Coopers Stadium on Friday night. McGowan said his team had been in full training for more than a week since their season ended in Sydney. “We had an internal trial this week and that was at a high quality so I’m confident we will be fit and ready to bring a challenge to our opposition,” he said. McGowan won’t be fazed by the occasion, having played against Liverpool FC in the Europa League while he was at Hearts FC and also featuring for the Reds when Málaga CF visited Adelaide Oval last year. There will be many players that McGowan and his fellow defenders

will have to look out for, including Mexican brothers Jonathan and Giovani dos Santos and explosive winger Denis Cheryshev who is on loan from Real Madrid. The Yellow Submarine has 11 internationals in its side, including Argentina’s Luciano Vietto who is regarded as their best player. He is adamant that the coaching staff, being mostly Spanish, would be able to fully prepare the Reds for the clash. “Most Spanish teams play the short-passing, possession-based style of play and having Spanish coaches and players will definitely help our research and preparation for the game,” he said. “We want to make a good account of ourselves and give our fans something to cheer about in the off-season - we won’t be underdone in terms of preparation

rsenal striker Theo Walcott has warned FA Cup final opponents Aston Villa that the Gunners are on fire. Arsenal finished off its Premier League season by destroying West Brom 4-1 last week with a devastating first-half display and hat-trick hero Walcott claims Villa better watch itself at Wembley on Saturday. “There’s a good sense of belief in this team,” he said. “We can take that into the weekend and hopefully get another trophy. “When it is free-flowing football

like that, we’re impossible to play against. “We’ve had a great run. We’ve finished third and if we win the FA Cup next week, that’s a good season. “But I think that next season, we need to be challenging for the title, with the team we’ve got.” Manager Arsene Wenger has said that striker Danny Welbeck is set to miss the clash. Wenger confirmed Welbeck’s knee problem was likely to rule him out and could put a question mark over whether the striker would be fit for England’s upcoming friendly

and we’ll know what to expect when the time comes.”

Given that Villarreal CF concluded its La Liga season last Sunday, there have been suggestions that the side might “take it easy”. But McGowan is confident they’ll take the match seriously and that it will be a fantastic occasion for all involved. “You don’t get to that level without being a true professional and I think they’ll definitely give us their best game,” he said. “It’ll be great for us to test ourselves against such quality opposition and we really want to get our confidence and preparations for next season off to the best possible start.” After playing in Adelaide on Friday night, Villarreal heads to Brisbane to face the Roar next Wednesday night. English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur and EPL title winner Chelsea are in the country as well to play Sydney FC on Saturday night and next Tuesday night respectively. against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin and the Euro 2016 qualifier away to Slovenia. The inability to practise has hindered the 24-year-old former Manchester United player’s chances of being fit for the final. There was better news for Wenger about club captain Mikel Arteta, who may return to Arsenal’s Cup final squad following calf and then ankle problems that have sidelined him since November. “Arteta is a possibility, because he is back in full training,” Wenger said. French defender Mathieu Debuchy is another who has a chance to be involved after overcoming a hamstring injury.

Warne backs Bayliss

S

hane Warne has backed “old school” countryman Trevor Bayliss to succeed in the high-profile England cricket team coaching job. Former NSW and Sri Lanka mentor Bayliss, 52, has reportedly accepted the job after being chosen ahead of countryman Jason Gillespie and his first task will be helping to defeat his home country in the upcoming Ashes series in England. “If Trevor Bayliss is the new coach of England, then England are very lucky, as he is a ripper and even better, he’s pure old school too,” Warne said on Twitter. “He’s done a wonderful job, on all the reports, with the teams he’s coached. “Everyone’s a big fan of Trevor Bayliss. He’s fair, he’s harsh, and he creates a pretty good environment.” News Corp reported that Bayliss had agreed to incentivebased terms that would earn him a minimum of about $600,000 a year. Bayliss led NSW to two Sheffield Shield titles, helped Sri Lanka to the 2011 World Cup final and won the Indian Premier League with the Kolkata Knight Riders. Widely regarded for his cricket acumen, Bayliss has always preferred to stay out of the limelight and work behind the scenes but may not find that easy in an England job which attracts such close media scrutiny. Breakaway leaders

F

our sides have broken away from the rest following weekend results in Division 1.

Goodwood Saints has snuck into the top position with Henley, Tea Tree Gully and Payneham Norwood Union behind on percentage alone. They are two games clear of Salisbury North in fifth spot. It has set the stage for an intriguing encounter between top two sides the Saints and Henley this week. The winner will gain a slight advantage while the other could drop back to fourth on their own so plenty is at stake. The Sharks may have prepared better coming away from tricky Pertaringa Oval last week with a tough 15-point win in a finals-like clash. Brad Geddes, Tim Broadbent and Jake Pavlich will need to be prolific again while their strong Reserves unit could also be significant if called upon. Goodwood Saints weren’t tested in their undemanding 149-point thumping of Portland, but Tom Anderson, Luke Stanton and Angus Clarke will need to have a similar impact this week. Tea Tree Gully made Henley earn its victory last week and was unlucky things didn’t go its way in the end.

Players now know they must be at it in every attack on the ball. Adelaide University will feel the Gullies’ disappointment on Saturday. The Blacks will need to find something extra too if they are to snatch a home ground triumph here. Payneham Norwood Union proved too good for them last week with a blitzing second-half display to win by 36 points as one of the division’s newcomers go from strength to strength. The next three weeks will be crucial for the Falcons in telling us where they really sit in the scheme of things with matches against Salisbury North, Tea Tree Gully and Goodwood Saints ahead. Cameron Milne, Toby Leiman and Harrison Pride continue to set the pace. The Hawks showed they could be a contender beating Rostrevor OC comfortably by 49 points last week but they need to continue their good form. Much will rely on Paul Radway, Michael Eichner and Anthony Morgante stepping up each week. Finals’ prospects of Rostrevor OC and Sacred Heart OC could be a deciding factor hanging on the result of their clash this week. Both need a win to stay in touch with the gap growing from the top five.

Henley has a strong Reserves group that could be called upon at any time. Photo: Jayson Vowles SHOC will be thankful for Port District’s poor goal-kicking, but it took the points and ran last week. Sean Keen, Matthew Delmenico and Patrick Whitelum will be out to also claim college bragging rights against ROCs this week. Phantoms, Iggies chase vital edge

P

HOS Camden and Old Ignatians will hunt second place on the ladder and possibly top position when they clash at Camden Oval this Saturday. The sides have five wins with one loss and look near certainties for the finals. The Phantoms bounced back to winning form last week by crushing Mitcham by 152 points. Hamish Gordon, Steven Williams and Brent Van Gils led the way, while Adam Smyth (seven goals) and Matthew Jacquier (six goals) dominated in attack. Old Iggies beat Golden Grove by 43 points at Hunter Park in a lowscoring game, 10.11 (71) to 4.4 (28). Angus Crowley, Shelley Fulton and Patrick Connelly stood tall. An absorbing game with the winner hard to select. Maybe the Phantoms by three goals. Golden Grove and Plympton sit just outside the top five so this match at Harpers Field is vital to both teams. Grove was no match for Old Iggies last week, finding scoring hard to come by with just 4.14 for the day. Brock

Castree, Joshua Ingram and Scott Peterson played fine games for the Kookaburras. Plympton had the bye last week while the week before had a 10-goal win against Seaton Ramblers with Phillip Midlin best. Home ground swings it the Kookaburras’ way. Pembroke Old Scholars looks too strong for Mitcham at Haslam Oval. The fifth-ranked Kings pushed top side Athelstone last week to a four-point result after trailing at each change. Scott Fisher, Matt Falzon and Ryan Marini were among the best players for Pembroke OS. Mitcham, eighth, was no match for PHOS Camden at home – falling by 152 points. Steven Wyld, Ben Geytenbeek and Samuel Clark battled strongly for the Hawks. Tough to argue a case for the Hawks this week. Pembroke OS by 50 points plus. Athelstone is flying and looks far too strong for Flinders Park at Max Amber Sportsfield. The unbeaten Raggies followed on from their

three-point win against PHOS Camden with a four-point win against Pembroke OS last week after leading by 22 points at the last change. Daniel Sullivan, Josh Sykes (five goals) and Thomas Clayton starred for the Raggies. Flinders Park held fourth place on the ladder when it beat Seaton Ramblers by 29 points at home. Brett Hains, Scott Miller (seven goals) and Cody Brooke were among the Reds’ best players. Another win looks likely for Athelstone this week, by 28 points plus. Seaton Ramblers has the bye. High-flying Magpies hard to catch

H

ectorville faces an uphill battle to stop North Haven at Daly Oval this week.

The Hounds have two wins and a draw but the Magpies are unbeaten in seven matches. Last week Hectorville fell to Pooraka by 64 points away with Luke Broadbent, Sam Ritchie and Jake Mazzone among the bet. Tyson Smith kicked three goals. North Haven was never troubled by Eastern Park at home last week, winning by 75 points. Ryan Adams, Anthony Laurencic and Matthew Reed (eight goals, 49 goals for the season) were best. The visitors will have the depth to win again by 50 points plus. Eastern Park should hold fourth and possibly climb to third after hosting winless Glenunga. Last week the Demons kicked 10.8 (68) to fall to North Haven’s 22.11 (143). Best players included Jaron Burke, Matthew Paul and Ben McMullen. Glenunga crashed to Kilburn by 105 points at

Blair Athol last week with Sam Abell, Lincoln Bennett and Luke Nicholls playing fine games. Eastern Park won’t let this slip. Westminster Old Scholars (WOS) and Salisbury should provide an absorbing tussle at Glandore Oval. WOS, fifth, beat Kenilworth by 12 points last week at St Marys Park. Better players were Cody Boylan, Joshua Starling and Rhys French. Salisbury is in solid form and sits second on the ladder with six wins from seven matches. Last week it crushed Hope Valley by 66 points at home and saw good games from Nathan Kennedy (four goals), Scott McPherson and Brad Horjus (five goals). No surprise to see the home side get up but the Magpies can swoop here by 22 points. A win to either Hope Valley or Pooraka should put it on the edge of the five after their clash at Hope Valley. The Demons fell to Salisbury last

NINE NEWs DIVISIOn 5 Pivotal clashes await

S

ome pivotal clashes this week could have far-reaching effects on the rest of the season for some sides.

Para Hills will test its credentials against top side Colonel Light Gardens, Elizabeth needs a win over Rosewater to maintain its hopes of a finals berth and CBCOC will be out to keep its position in the top five when meeting Adelaide Lutheran. Injury to Pulteney’s Joel Aish, who was playing well at the time, hindered the Navy Blues prospects of causing an upset against the top side, that gives this week’s match against bottom side Woodville South more importance to stay away from the relegation zone and hold onto any slim finals’ aspirations.

Greenacres also won’t want to drop too far behind the finals-hunting pack, but will need to be at its best to overcome second-placed Blackfriars OS. It all builds towards a thrilling weekend of football in Division 5. The Big Reds will need a team performance to compete against the rising Lions with Tim Chenoweth and Jake Westover being called on to step up again. Ty Corey and Daniel Scott-Collings continue to set the pace at Colonel Light Gardens and they will be hard for Para Hills to restrict. The Bulldogs should have the firepower to sustain any challenge from the Eagles, especially

week with Daniel Wood, Ren Miller and Scott Peterson standing tall. Pooraka was far too strong for Hectorville by 64 points at home. Best for the Bulls were Chris Adams, Dale Armstrong and Ben Zolnowski. Kye Vandermoer (five goals) and Michael Baker (four goals) led the scorers. The Bulls can just get home by 15 points. Kenilworth will be under pressure to hold Kilburn at St Marys Park this week. The Kookaburras have just the one win and a draw. Kilburn should get home again by 34 points but it should be a tight at times. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

CH9AFL Division 6 Lions set to roar again

T

rinity Old Scholars look set to consolidate third place on the ladder with a visit to Brahma Lodge on Saturday. The Lions have won four of their six games and look to be in good shape to make finals. Last week the Lions came from 17 points down to beat Ingle Farm by three points with Alex Cotter and Matthew Perry kicking three goals each. Brahma Lodge fell to Mawson Lakes by 13 points after trailing all day. Jordan Beagley and Darren Huitema were among the best. Trinity should be too strong here by 20-34 points. Fitzroy hosts unbeaten Smithfield in a tough contract for the home side. The sixth-ranked Lions fell to bottom side Central United by 26 points after trailing comfortably at each break. Beau Pieterman and Darren Francis led the way for the Lions. Smithfield had a tough battle against West Croydon last week before drawing away to win by 42 points at home. Tyson Wanganeen, Adam Moss (six goals) and Michael Ashby (six goals) were among the best. The Panthers look to have too much depth here. Smithfield by 40 points plus.

DIVISION 1 LADDER It is second versus eighth when Lockleys hosts Mawson Lakes. The Demons, with five wins on the board, had the bye last week. Mawson Lakes recorded a 13-point win against Brahma Lodge after holding an edge at each change. Nathan Bruce-Gordon and Justin Keast were among the key players, while Matthew Ralph kicked four goals. Lockleys looks far too strong here by 40-60 pts. Ingle Farm and West Croydon meet at Ingle Farm in a fifth versus fourth match-up. Ingle Farm led everywhere except the end against Trinity Old Scholars, down by three points after leading at each change. Erik Glouftsis was best, while Matthew Wood and Sam Naylor were good players. West Croydon lost to Smithfield by 42 points after trailing by one point at half time. Steven Cooper and Lee Walsh were among the best for the Hawks. National 1 Plumbing Division 7 Saints looking up

S

t Pauls OS has clearly defined itself as the second best side in Division 7 at present, but taking over the top mantle will be a greater challenge. The league’s newcomers answered everything Adelaide University could throw at it last week, winning by 20 points to sit level on points with top side Houghton Districts, but with a bye still to come. The Saints face Angle Vale at home on Saturday before taking that well-earned break. They will be looking for their forwards Ryan Smiech (six goals against the Blacks) and Wayne Nassereddine (five) again to kick another bag of goals. The Owls should be rested coming into this game off the bye. The Raiders were given a fright from Mitchell Park, ninth, in the first half of their contest last week. But they came out after the half time to put on a clinic in the third quarter.

The Lions didn’t know what hit them, held goalless for the term, while their opponents ran rampant kicking 11 goals to make any chance of an upset impossible. Sam Sajn, Matthew Ballatori and Michael Gilling (nine goals) of Houghton Districts can inspire a similar performance from their teammates when Salisbury West visit on Saturday. The Tigers had their own day in the park last week, accounting for Flinders University by 91 points. Travis Smith, Justin Davies and Adam Jones must prepare for a tougher fight this week. Mitchell Park can take some heart out of its showing against the ladder leader. The same kind of effort could create another win against Adelaide University this week.

All ready for Oaks the way to win by four lengths and despite being beaten by Ballet Suite in the Listed Princess Stakes at Doomben at her previous start.

Second favourite Ballet Suite tuned up for Saturday’s Group One race with a slashing gallop at the Gold Coast.

Trainer of Roses runner-up Col `N’ Lil, Ben Currie, was boosted by his hope’s performance though.

Oaks favourite Winx, also from the Waller stable, also galloped at the Gold Coast but on Saturday morning after winning the Group Three Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) on 16 May in stunning style coming from last and jumping from barrier 14. The runner-up of the Group One Australian Oaks (2400m) in April has been freshened for her tilt at the Queensland fillies feature and she is also fit and well ahead of the Oaks according to Waller. “The fact the race is at Doomben and over 2200 metres instead of 2400 is in their favour,” he said. Gai Waterhouse is confident her Roses winner Bohemian Lily can outsay the Waller pair in the Oaks (2200m), after leading almost all

“She was beaten a long way but she was caught deep in the middle stages and then she had to do the chasing to take the field up to Bohemian Lily,” Currie said. Whatalovelyday ran third and her trainer Jon Walk is hoping for rain. “It was a good Oaks trial but to be realistic I would like rain to bring the favourites back to us,” Walk said. New Zealand Oaks runner-up Platinum Witness ran sixth in the Roses and jockey Damian Browne said she would benefit from her first experience racing clockwise.

Victorian filly Ungrateful Ellen will get a second chance at an Oaks victory when she heads to Queensland but trainer Robert Smerdon is under no illusions about how tough it will be.

12. Which La Liga outfit is known as ‘The Yellow Submarine’?

“But Ungrateful Ellen runs the trip and if it’s wet it won’t worry her.”

IT’s a joke TWO MEN WERE CHANGING IN THE LOCKER room after a game of tennis. One notices the other putting on pair of stockings and suspenders. “When did you start wearing them?” he queried “Since my wife found a pair on the back seat of the car,” the other answered. THREE FANS WERE BEMOANING THE SORRY STATE OF THEIR AFL TEAM. “I blame the list manager,” said the first fan. “If he signed better players, we’d be a great team.” “I blame the players,” said the second fan. “If they put in a full on effort, we’d put score on the board.” “I blame my parents,” said the third. “If I’d been born in Sydney, I’d be supporting a decent team.”
