Successful events for the West Sussex West School Partnership
high standards despite having to battle the elements. The teachers were very impressed with the afternoons and the progress their children had made.
The West Sussex West School Sport Partnership (WSW SSP), ran 2 high quality tag rugby festivals on 10th and 11th October. The first event took place at Bognor Rugby Club for Year 3/4 children. The second at Chichester Rugby Club for Year 5/6.
WSW SSP manager, Sean O’Connor commented: “These 2 events could not have taken place without the Regis School sports leaders who did an exceptional job and made The Regis School proud. A huge thank you to both Bognor and Chichester Rugby Club. I hope the children not already playing now look at accessing rugby after school at either club, as we try to promote our local club pathways.”
Both events were very well attended, each having 120 children participate. The afternoon consisted of mixed school groups having an hour of skills and drills led by The Regis School Year 8 & 9 sports leaders. The secondary pupils were trained prior to the event in leading tag rugby to the various primary age groups. The sports leaders consisted of rugby representatives and obvious future PE teacher contenders. This was a great experience for them. The leaders were responsible for the planning and delivery of the activities with only 2 goals - the children have fun and improve their tag rugby ability. Both goals were achieved with flying colours. The children gave a thumbs up/down at the start of each event at their confidence in playing the game and did the same at the end with an impressive 100% thumbs up by the end at both events.
Unveiling of the Lincoln RFC truck Cartwright Bros have supported Lincoln RFC by having one of their new trailers kitted out with photos of the club's mini and junior players. With help from Branston Ltd, the trailer will be out and about on the roads of Lincolnshire spreading the word that Lincoln RFC welcomes all ages to come and play. From the under 6’s through to the seniors, boys and girls, everyone is welcome at the club.
Following the training the children returned to their school teams and had the chance to experience some matches. Although Year 3/4 took a little while, by the end we were seeing some fantastic tries scored, it was a joy to watch on a glorious sunny day. The Year 5/6 matches took a keen competitive edge straight away showing some exceptionally 02

The CNG Power Up branding is now completed at the Stratstone Stadium gym. CNG kindly sponsored the new flooring, with additional finance from Marlow IP Recruitment. Extra equipment has been generously provided by Martin Corbett. The gym at Rudding Lane is one which all players can enjoy using, and which significantly raises the standards of the club's fitness and conditioning facilities. The club appreciates the help of all sponsors helping HRUFC to improve the facilities at Rudding Lane for all playing members and supporters.
Winnington Park RFC hit target figure for club facilities renovations Winnington Park RFC have hit the ÂŁ10,000 target figure that the club set for the WPRFC Floodlight Appeal. The club offers many thanks to all those who contributed, it just shows what the club can achieve when they put their minds to it. To raise this amount of money in less than a month is truly amazing. This appeal money, along with the match funding from Sport England, the money that the Club has saved, plus the other various funding streams, means that the club will be able to go ahead with not only the new floodlight installation, but the building of the new viewing balcony, upgrade of the clubhouse kitchen. Then, in the summer extending the pitch drainage system to the 1st & 2nd pitches and training areas. Winnington Park RFC thanks all supporters, the generosity has been overwhelming.
Halstead Templars proudly announce RFU Club Accreditation status Halstead Templars were visited by Ivor Smith, president of Essex RFU, as they passed another milestone in their growth being awarded the RFU’s Club Accreditation. Ivor held the presentation in Halstead’s Royal British Legion who have hosted the Templars post-match for three seasons now, always making sure the team, along with their visitors are well fed and watered after an afternoon of rugby. The Club Accreditation scheme, designed to help strengthening clubs and growing the game in the communities around them, works around a framework of key drivers that clubs must demonstrate they have embedded within their structure to the standard expected by the RFU, and Halstead have done just that. From recruiting, developing and retaining players, coaches and volunteers to having and maintaining effective and efficient facilities, management and governance the club have demonstrated that they mean business and are committed to improving. The final criteria, that of integration within the local community, is one of pride for the club and as Ivor commented after watching the Templars beat Bury in a friendly match: “It’s clear to see that the standing of the club in the community is one of great importance. When sharing facilities, from the changing rooms to The Legion for post-
match activities, there is a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Anyone new to the club or game itself would feel comfortable getting involved.” Ivor also had a chance to recognise two volunteers who are working behind the scenes to keep rugby in Halstead going from strength to strength. Emma Cook was recognised for her work in the O2 Touch provision. Monday evenings, from 7pm, the club hosts a mixed touch session to allow anyone of 14 years or older to get into the sport without worrying about the heavy contact sustained in the full 15-aside game. Emma has worked tirelessly as an O2 Touch ambassador to spread the word, grow the social media provision and recruit players. This recruitment drive has seen the Templars able to get a 2nd XV team out on four occasions so far. The second volunteer recognised for her hard work was Jo Merry, pitch-side first aider. She has the unenviable task of trying to keep a growing number of ailing players on the pitch, assessing injuries and treating the fallen, often from both teams. She had no qualifications when she took on the role of 'sponge carrier' but has, over the last couple of seasons, undertaken to rectify this and is an ever present on the touchline. This season, more than most, Jo has had to patch players up and send them back out, with restrictions on number of substitutes, and although Halstead have occasionally finished games with fewer than 15 on the pitch, it would have happened a lot more regularly without her.

Newbury Blues announce Roc Technologies as new main shirt sponsor
sports clubs and major sporting events. Seeing the Roc logo on the front of the Newbury Rugby Club match shirt brings pride the entire Roc team. "I am part of a world record breaking attempt to play the highest game of Rugby ever on Mount Everest in the early 2019, raising funds for a community rugby charity so hopefully both myself and Newbury Rugby Club will both scale new heights before the end of the season.” Newbury RFC Sponsorship Manager Barnaby Atkinson said, “We’re delighted to have Roc Technologies join as one of our sponsors. Stockton RFC install new floodlight columns at the club Following the kind donation of 8 floodlight columns by Billingham RUFC, Stockton RFC have now successfully applied for an increase to their original planning proposal. The club will now able to provide enough lighting to play league rugby as well as training.
A fantastic development for the clubs ever improving community partnership Stockton RFC offer a massive thank you to Jeremy Good and club sponsors ELG planning for providing the expertise to take this project forward.

Datchworth Under 14s seal clothing sponsorship deal The 2018-2019 U14's at Datchworth Rugby Club have recently been supported by C&C Kitchens with funding to supply all their players with club embroidered Under Armour polo tops, hoodies and bottoms. The expectation is that all the squad will now attend pre and post match dressed in this new attire. For a number of years the current Haywards Heath RFC Clubhouse at Whitemans Green has been inadequate for the needs of a thriving community rugby club and is no longer fit for purpose. With the generous assistance of the Club’s main sponsor, Fairfax, and its education foundation Fairfax Building Young Futures, the Club is planning to build a state-of-the-art multi-sports pavilion at Whitemans Green. This will provide the rugby club with a new Clubhouse, offer facilities to support other local sports clubs, provide Fairfax Building Young Futures with a base and offer enormous benefits for the health and well-
The company director Claire Pearcy writes: "Here at C&C Kitchens we love to support local charities and teams. We have recently sponsored the Datchworth Rugby Club U14 rugby team’s training kit. This fabulous group of boys, also known as ‘The Green Army’ are doing so well this year, and we would like to wish them luck for the rest of the season." On behalf of all the players and parents from the U14 junior age group the club would like to express their thanks to C&C Kitchens for this wonderful gesture and hope that their season continues to go from success to success.

Head of Banking, Stuart Talbot, said: “FNB Channel Islands is delighted to come on board as a sponsor of the Guernsey Raiders. This is an exciting opportunity for us to invest and partner with such a wellsupported club, and we are proud to be a part of the development of rugby in Guernsey.” Guernsey Raiders Director of Rugby, Jordan Reynolds welcomed the new deal saying: "It’s great to have FNB Channel Islands as part of our rugby community. Prenton Rugby Club propose new club facilities for the community Prenton Rugby Club is an amalgamation of Old Rockferrians (Formed in 1928) and Old Instonians (Formed in 1928) Rugby Clubs. They have been playing rugby at the Prenton site for over 65 Years. Prenton is a mature residential area consisting of both privately owned houses and council houses. Wirral Borough Council (WBC) has a playing pitch strategy dated 11th December 2017 which has identified that in Prenton, Claughton & Oxton there is a shortage of 3G /4G Pitches; 2 mini match sessions for football; 16 Rugby match sessions; and a need for artificial hockey pitches. The former Pershore House Playing Fields in Prenton which was designated as a playing field under WBC Unitary Development Plan has been sold for residential development. The present facilities are dated and are badly in need of refurbishment. The club has noticed a decline in its membership which has had an impact on the club’s finances. They believe that new facilities will attract new members and secure the future of the club. Many of the club's members are from the local area and feel change is necessary. The club has been utilised by both Glenavon and Arrowe Park Blades Junior Football Clubs, although not as often as they would
like due to poor drainage on the training pitch. This problem will be resolved by the installation of a 3G/4G pitch. The club will also make this pitch available for local children within the community. The development they propose will also include a community hub. This has been welcomed by Prenton Tenants and Residents association who wish to utilise the facility as a focal point for all residents. We are looking to embrace all local residents by offering a facility that is clearly needed for the area. The project has the full support of our local councillors: Fire Services; Merseyside Police; Prenton Primary School and many others. In summary the new facility will not only ensure the sustainability of Prenton Rugby Club, but also benefit the wider community of Prenton, for now and the immediate future.
#GetAntonToKingholm In the year of the Rugby World Cup, what better way to embrace and inspire the spirit of rugby than the meeting of fans and supporters from all over the world? Well that spirit of unity and cooperation has

been adopted by the supporters of Gloucester Rugby who have literally taken their new South African ‘super fan’ Anton Momberg, under their wing. Anton himself is a huge supporter of both his home team The Golden Lions based in Johannesburg and of course their former and current Gloucester Head Coach, Johan Ackermann along with the recently signed South African Gloucester players. Anton has become a stalwart amongst the #GlawsFamily with his regular posts on the ‘Gloucester Rugby is my Holm’ Facebook page, from player stats, to injury updates and countdowns to each game, Anton has taken the meaning of ‘supporter’ to a new level. It was during a debate about his posts that the supporters on the FB page decided to carry out a poll to continue his posts, which received unanimous backing. This was swiftly followed by a further to poll to seek an opinion on whether to reward his regular, positive input with a trip to Kingsholm. It was wholeheartedly accepted and the Crowd Funding page #GetAntonToKingsholm was launched. After just a few days, the fund had received over two thousand pounds which is being put to good use, in bringing Anton, who has never travelled outside of South Africa before, over to Gloucester to experience the famous Shed at Kingsholm for the West Country clash against Bath in April. The Gloucester fans together with the generous support from Gloucester Rugby including Johan Ackermann himself have also put together a ‘once in a lifetime trip’ for Anton. Even his sister, Linda, is so impressed with the trip that she has decided to take time off and has bought her own ticket so she can join her brother in the UK.
09
They will visit the famous sights in London, enjoy a tour of the Cotswolds and even participate in some special activities hosted by Gloucester Rugby, staff and the senior squad. This will undoubtedly be the cherry on the cake for a rugby fanatic like Anton. It’s unlikely there are many clubs whose supporters would go to such lengths to embrace their new overseas fans, but the friends and fans of Gloucester Rugby have shown their true, welcoming spirit. They can’t wait to #GetAntonToKingsholm! .
Fylde Rugby Club pay tribute to Sir Bill Beaumont
At a charming, informal evening at the Woodlands on Friday, 15th February, Fylde RFC officials, members and supporters paid an affectionate tribute to Sir Bill Beaumont and his contribution to the Club and rugby generally for more than 50 years. As always, Bill, accompanied by his wife Hilary, mixed easily with a host of former team mates, friends and club supporters, swapping stories, banter and memories.
Chairman Dave Young, who packed down so often in the 2nd row with Sir Bill in the late 1970s and early 1980s, spoke for the whole Club when he presented him with a glass wine cooler inscribed “Presented to Sir Bill Beaumont for services to rugby from Members of Fylde Rugby Football Club”.
Simon Wright & Miles Hayward from Sevenoaks RFC to tackle Everest
Sir Bill responded by thanking everyone who had attended and for the generous gift. No one had any doubts about his love of the Club with whom he’s been committed since joining as a 17 year old in 1969, following on from his father and grandfather, and succeeded by his three sons, all of whom have also played in the famous claret and gold. As the Club is on the threshold of entering its Centenary season in 2019-20, the names of ‘Fylde’ and ‘Sir Bill Beaumont’ will be forever interlinked. Next year the two pictured above will attempt to give something back to the sport by supporting a charity that is well known to Sevenoaks RFC, whilst also attempting to break a Guinness world record. Wooden Spoon aims to positively transform the lives of children and young people with a disability or facing disadvantage across the UK and Ireland through the power of rugby. The LMAX Exchange Everest Rugby Challenge takes place across 24 days (12 April to 5 May 2019) and will see the group battle acclimatisation and heights of Advance Base Camp (3) at 6,500 metres to play the highest game of full contact rugby and the highest game of mixed touch rugby in history – all in support of Wooden Spoon. Here's an update from both of them: "I thought it would be fun to update you with our Everest Rugby training challenge, it’s

specialised wheelchairs so it was great to see how the fund raising is spent. Last weekend we travelled to Scotland (Ben Nevis) for some crampon and Ice axe training! Despite very heavy snow last week, we were greeted by torrential rain on Saturday and no snow! After 5 hours of walking what felt like “underwater” we decided to go back to the hotel and warm up with Haggis and Whiskey! The weather was a good test of our equipment and resolve. been a busy few months! Only 72 days until we depart.. Yikes! In December we had our first experience of Altitude training at Southampton University (No, there aren’t any Mountains!) They basically measure the oxygen in your blood and see how well your body responds as they increase the altitude and decrease the oxygen supply, they then measure how quickly your oxygen levels recover. The simulation is to 3000 meters and then 5000 meters, we are attempting to play Rugby at 6500m! It’s a strange sensation and you definitely feel slightly light headed and a bit sick, it feels like someone has their hand over your mouth and nose! My testing went well the results suggested I am “slightly” susceptible to AMS (Acute mountain sickness) so I have booked an 8 week course at the Altitude centre where I will train twice a week in an altitude chamber to help me acclimatise. The following day we had the chance to play Wheelchair Rugby with the Solent Sharks, an incredible experience and very tough. Wooden Spoon pay for some of the

Sunday we woke to snow and freezing temperatures (-18c wind chill!) so decided to climb one of the Munros (Scottish mountains above 916 meters) in Glencoe. It was truly amazing scenery and despite the cold it was a brilliant 4.5 hour trek to the summit at just under 1000 meters. It gave us a small idea of the type of environment we are likely to face at Advance Base Camp. The fundraising is going well but we need a final push towards our £10,000 target. Would be great if anyone can make the Club lunch on 9th February or use the link below. Thank you to everyone who has donated, it helps the motivation massively!"

Petersfield RFC highlight mental health issues
cartoon rugby mural to brighten up the club’s Junior Clubhouse, in aid of UK Sepsis Trust.
Petersfield RFC is delighted to be working once again with Ross Borman from Havant & East Hants Mind to help raise awareness of mental health issues.
The local artist from Horley, Surrey, started work on his design back in November 2018, and within days had finished a cheeky, funny comic wall scene. All dressed in EGRFC blue shirts, there are many different characters within the cartoon scene, which includes an alert meerkat, a galloping giraffe, a fearless lion, a patient vulture, a relaxed elephant, a speedy mouse, cheeky monkeys and determined rhino’s, all having fun playing rugby.
Mind were at PRFC on 21st of February to film the Seniors & Colts training as part of their ongoing Ambassadors Project. The film-makers also recorded conversations with players discussing their understanding of mental health issues. 1 in 4 people in any given year might experience poor mental health, so the chances are that we all may know someone who is struggling with this issue. Mental health is rarely discussed in the workplace. Havant and East Hants Mind are looking for Mental Health Ambassadors who are committed to our cause of improving mental wellbeing within the workplace. The role of a Mental Health Ambassador is voluntary and only requires a small time commitment.
Ex-Disney Animator & Fireman Sam Director creates mural for East Grinstead Rugby Junior Clubhouse Gary Andrews, an animator who has directed Fireman Sam and illustrated for Disney, has created East Grinstead Rugby Football Club (EGRFC) a very special bespoke animal
At the heart of any rugby club is its clubhouse, it’s the important connection between supporters, players and the rugby and EGRFC are fortunate to have two. They wanted to brighten up an area used by their junior members and were delighted that Gary agreed to help them. They knew that they wanted something that would engage the children, and reinforce creativity, awareness, resilience, decision making and self-organisation. All priority skills for helping develop the next generation of players both on and off the pitch.

Gary Andrews said: ‘From the beginning, I knew what direction to take. Children connect with animals, it was a lovely challenge. I wanted to draw it in line art as I did not want it to feel like a hospital waiting area mural. I really hope that the children will love the characters and bring them to life in their own special way’. Paul Nix, Junior Chairman, EGRFC said: ‘The Junior Clubhouse was the vision of the late Steve Cairns, a pillar of EGRFC and president from 2004-2012. We are sure Steve would love the fun, determination and message perfectly illustrated by Gary. This wonderful gift from Gary will help to perpetuate Steve’s legacy to our junior section and along with donations from local organisations our planned enhancements and repairs to this club house will help Steve’s memory live long into the club’s history.’ ‘As a community club we wanted to raise public awareness about sepsis, and to support Gary’s amazing fund-raising efforts. Unfortunately, there is no shortage of personal stories from sepsis survivors and those who, tragically, have lost a loved one.’ Paul added. EGRFC would like to sincerely thank Gary Andrews for all his support and creativity on this project and thank Rex Whittaker, our East Grinstead Mayor and long standing active member of the club, who presented the Big Reveal at the Juniors Christmas Party last Sunday, 16 December. Gary Andrews Story - How a doodle a day helped me survive first year without my wife: The former Disney Animator laid bare the
13
realities of life as a widower in a series of heart wrenching drawings. When Gary Andrews, 57, began doing a Doodle Diary on his 54th birthday, he was a happily married man with a wife and two children he adored. While away on a work trip to Canada, Gary's wife Joy fell ill with what they thought was a simple flu. However, it soon became apparent that it was much more serious than that, and Gary rushed home to be near his beloved. On arrival back in the UK he received the devastating news: Joy had passed away from Sepsis. Gary said: 'Joy had been my soulmate for 19 years. She was beautiful, kind, generous and funny. We did everything together. When I lost her, I felt half of me had gone.' Every single day since the death of Joy, Gary has faithfully continued to sketch an enchanting “doodle diary” of poignant illustrations, charting the daily challenges, good, bad, funny, angry or sad, he and his two children have faced, Lily, 11 and Ben, 8. He now hopes to publish this book to raise money for the UK Sepsis Trust, to raise awareness of the disease. ‘Doing my doodles is like my form of therapy. “It helps me come to terms with what has happened, and the fact Joy has gone. I draw the realities of what it’s like to suddenly become a single dad and it helps me to talk about what’s happened with my children. I have had an incredible reaction to my work – I am so fortunate to be able to write things, draw things, that relates to something happening in their life which maybe they haven’t been able to articulate. People struggling with grief are not alone and I hope that my drawings bring families some comfort’ Gary said.
