Welcome

T

HE opening two rounds of the Kraft Nabisco brought to mind two thoughts: what must Michelle Wie have been thinking as she played alongside Lydia Ko; and is 15 years of age too young to be playing sport at the top level? On the first question, it is impossible to imagine Wie did not reflect on the past decade and wonder if she should have done things differently. She was once Ko, the schoolgirl sensation who had the game at her feet at the age of 15. And now she is ranked 86 in the world, over 60 places lower than Ko... who admits Wie is her idol. That is enough to make anyone reflect and dwell on things – and probably feel a little ‘past it’. Wie is 23. She and Ko played the first two rounds together at Mission Hills and although Wie edged the youngest by a couple of shots, she finished two behind her come Sunday. Ko is clearly hugely talented but does it feel correct for her to be playing such top-level sport at such a young age? Is her playing partner in 2013’s opening Major not living proof that too much too young is detrimental – certainly in the sporting arena if not life terms? Or is that an out-of-date theory based on a few high-profile examples of ‘burn out’? We tend to think not, but would be interested to hear your views. Please do let us know in the usual fashion.

THE STARTER

Anna Nordqvist I The Swede on her surprise Major win in 2009 and her golfing heroes

DID a lot of different sports growing up. I have a very sporting family; I have two brothers. I was just really sporty and then I did a lot of team sports, but then eventually when I started to play golf, I felt like it was on my own terms and I could practise whenever I wanted. It was basically up to me how good I wanted to be. My life changed a little bit after the Major in 2009. I had a little bit more to do, a little bit more attention, which has been really fun. It's a great learning experience for me. Knowing that you're getting into tournaments took off some pressure because you're going to be able to make your schedule for the year. On the Saturday night it was hard not to think about golf, that's for sure and I had a hard time to fall asleep. Once I got to the course, I felt pretty calm, even though there were nerves in there, I felt pretty calm.

I started out the year with a conditional card, and then it was really tough to get into tournaments. In the beginning I tried to Monday-qualify for a few but I didn't get in. I mean, it was really tough to be on site and not getting to play, you really are wanting to play, and you know you are playing solid, but you didn't get in. I think that was a really good experience and makes me keep working hard. I was really nervous as a Solheim rookie in 2009. I didn't really know what to expect inside the ropes. The key I think is to just try to keep your own

6 Lady Golfer

pace and keep your own tempo even though you have a lot of adrenaline. I think that's what I learned. You have to really pace yourself to save energy for when you really need it. But just being in a team environment, I think that helps everyone really get motivated and really get inspired. Ever since I came out on Tour in 2009, Annika (Sorenstam) has been mentoring me. I practise a lot at her

academy in Orlando, where I live. She's just been a great support, helping me go through a lot of things and with advice here and there. I always said I wanted to be like Juli Inkster one day. She is a mom, she is 51, and she is out here and still

competing. It's a great opportunity anytime you get to play with her. I watched her a lot growing up and just to walk alongside her on the fairways and try to learn and catch a little bit of her brain is just such a good opportunity for me to get better.

Mickey Walker Looking back to the golden – or not so golden – days on tour

I

have just enjoyed watching the first women’s Major of the year – the Kraft Nabisco – and the the first men’s – the Masters – at fabulous venues, Mission Hills in California, and the iconic Augusta National in Georgia respectively. I can well recall in the early days of my professional career playing on courses that nowadays wouldn’t be considered suitable to host a professional tournament, let alone a Major championship! In 1979 when the then Women’s Professional Golf Association was formed, we barely had enough players to make up a minimum field of 30 players, and were grateful for any sponsorship that we had or to any golf course that wanted to host our events! Of course, we played on some top-rated courses such as Southport & Ainsdale, Woburn and Moor Park, which hosted the British Women’s Open Championship. But we didn’t get to play those sort of courses week in week out. The main thing was that the courses where we did play welcomed us and wanted us to be there. There wasn’t a question of us or our sponsor paying them to host our tournaments. The clubs and the players were mutually happy with the arrangement. Of course, we played some gems, such as Caldy, on the Wirral, and during the first three years of the WPGA, Carlsberg sponsored a series of events – 12 in year one, 10 in the second year and three larger events in 1981. All were played on excellent private members’ courses and several on recognised 8 Lady Golfer

Main attraction Laura Davies remains the biggest draw in ladies’ golf

championship courses, such as St Pierre, Moortown and Gleneagles – albeit on the Glendevon course which only survived for a few years. We also regularly played at Royal Portrush, one of Northern Ireland’s finest links courses as Rory, Darren and GMac will all testify. During those early years, we also played on several public courses – Eastleigh in Hampshire, Middlesbrough Municipal and Haigh Hall in Manchester. Then in the mid-80s the tour became much more European rather than solely British.

In general there weren’t many spectators. In fact, I can remember playing with Muriel Thomson from Scotland, one of the top British players at the time, but someone who could hear a pin drop a hundred feet away, at Hill Barn in Sussex. One of Muriel’s (and most players’) pet hates was male spectators who put their hands in their pockets and jingled their loose change, and as this was a totally unconscious act, they had no idea that they were doing it! Well, if a man following Muriel did it, first of all they would get one of her stares and if that didn’t have

“THERE WASN’T A QUESTION OF CLUBS BEING PAID TO HOST OUR EARLY EVENTS”

the desired effect a few words cured them from putting their hands in their pockets for life! On this occasion at Hill Barn just as Muriel was about to take the club back, a noise that sounded distinctly like the aforementioned man rattling his change occurred. Muriel stepped away from her shot ready to give the man one of her infamous looks only to see that it was actually a dog with a metal collar shaking his head! Both Muriel and I were in hysterics! I would say that even nowadays as the standard of play has improved dramatically from the early days of the women’s tour, there are only a handful of tournaments that get great crowds. We always get fantastic crowds in Sweden and generally for the Ricoh Women’s British Open, but obviously less so when it’s played in places such as Carnoustie. I believe that a number of factors affect attendance at British tournaments. One is the fact that Laura Davies is still the biggest draw in British women’s golf. That isn’t a slight on Laura – she’s still a fantastic player and very exciting to watch, it’s just that as she approaches 50, I would hope that we’d have another superstar to take her place. We have a lot of good British players, but no-one to challenge the best in the world – yet! We have some potentially world-class European players, but that’s not the same as supporting home-grown golfers. Everyone loved it when Catriona Matthew won the Ricoh at Royal Lytham & St www.ladygolferonline.co.uk

Popular week The Ricoh is one of our well-suported ladies’ events

Annes in 2009 and further back still in 2004 when Karen Stupples won the then Weetabix Women’s British Open at Sunningdale. It most definitely helps when the public know about you. This comes about often through seeing players on television. It is well documented that Sir Nick Faldo was inspired to take up golf after watching Jack Nicklaus win our Open on television. Television allows the viewer form an opinion about your personality, and whether they love or loathe you, they will then be inclined to follow your progress. Although it’s still possible to follow a player with all the media and social networks available these days, it’s so much easier and more likely that we might be attracted to a sport or person if we can switch on our TVs and see them. One of the things that happens with every professional tournament in America is that the tournaments have an association with a charity – usually a local one. That has happened occasionally in the UK, but www.ladygolferonline.co.uk

the only time it has ever been a big success was when McDonalds sponsored their tournament at Gleneagles. The event got a lot of McDonald’s suppliers to pay to play in the Pro-Am prior to the tournament with all the proceeds going to Ronald McDonald Charitable causes. The association was also promoted by Catherine Panton Lewis – the McDonald’s tournament organiser, who spoke at clubs throughout Scotland to spread awareness of the tournament, which increased the number of spectators, volunteers and in turn how much was raised for the charities. It always helps of course when an event stays at the same venue for a number of years, as the Ford Ladies Classic did at Woburn and as the McDonald’s WPGA Championship did at Gleneagles.

Madeleine Winnett A fairytale ending to the Masters

A real Angel A great end to affairs

H

OW wonderful that the abiding image for me of the 2013 Masters will be of Angel Cabrera and Adam Scott walking off the 20th green arm in arm. Can you imagine my favourite figure of scorn – Mr scowling, spitting, swearing Woods – ever putting his arm round the waist of the man who had just beaten him in a play off? Absolutely not! After the travesty of the rules debacles that had completely overshadowed the golf, it was so good to have a positive image to end on. Like many, I was incensed that the rules officials chose to dish out their first one-shot penalty for slow play in 17 years to a hapless 14-year-old amateur. Slow play is a shocking problem – far more apparent if you go to watch

10 Lady Golfer

Rules mess I’m no Tiger fan but he was right to play on

tournaments live than watching them on TV where the cameras can just switch to the next piece of action. Five-hour rounds were frowned upon, which then became five and a half, and escalated to six hours at the Masters. Apparently, that was the pace everyone was playing at, and young Tianlang Guan wasn’t holding anyone up behind him. I was about to

say that bullies always pick on weak targets, but then I looked up the definition of a bully in the Oxford dictionary: “Hired ruffian; blusterer; browbeater; man who lives on prostitute’s earnings…” – so not even I am brave enough to use that phrase any more! Seasoned professionals, who are notoriously slow, simply bypass the threat of sanctions by speeding up when they are on the clock, and then slow down again immediately after the threat has gone. What would work better would be to have a time keeper with every group for the whole round. There would be plenty of volunteers for the job at every tournament, so that wouldn’t be a problem providing numbers. I would also cut the amount of discussion time with caddies

down considerably. You know the yardage, you know how far you hit each club, and you know if it’s a one-club, or twoclub wind, so just get on with it – a bit like the player I love to hate so much when selecting the place to drop his ball for his best advantage. He didn’t waste any time striding back from the dropping zone he didn’t like, to a spot vaguely in the vicinity of where he played his last shot from, plus a few fringe benefits. Surprisingly, for one who watches every shot or putt of Tiger’s with the accompanying shouts of “get in the water” or “miss it”, I didn’t agree that he should disqualify himself. The rules officials made their decision, and he followed it. Who wouldn’t? But they should be crucified for not getting it right in the first place. They

reviewed the footage, saw that he had dropped the ball incorrectly, and did not intervene to impose the obligatory two-shot penalty there and then. That was the travesty, irrespective of the farcical rule bending that subsequently followed. But, in the end, the boy who every girl wants to take home to meet her mother won. The valiant cuddly knight who wouldn’t have been out of place as Richie Cunningham’s father in ‘Happy Days’ was runner up. The evil prince was defeated. And the innocent new rising star managed to prevail to make the cut and take the leading amateur honours despite the best attempts of the nasty men in green to thwart him. As fairy tales go, I’d say that was a pretty good ‘they all lived happily ever after’ ending!

www.ladygolferonline.co.uk

If like me you have spent the entire winter and spring huddled under more and more layers in an attempt to keep warm on the golf course, you might like to try an entirely different approach. Apparently, the Indians of Tierra del Fuego – located at the southern tip of South America, near Antarctica – wore no clothes at all to protect themselves from the sleetfilled air and icy waters. Now I have scoured the dress code at the club, and although it stipulates that if I am wearing a shirt, it must have a collar, it doesn’t seem to mention anywhere that you must wear clothes in the first place!

LADY GOLFER MEETS...

Lotta Lisolette Neumann is in an unusual position – she is a European captain preparing a Solheim Cup defence. It doesn’t happen very often, so we find out exactly how it’s going...

W

ITH less than four months until Europe’s first Solheim Cup defence for eight years the countdown is well and truly on. As things stand, four of the Europeans in the automatic qualifying spots would be rookies and, from the winning 2011 side, the likes of Mel Reid, Laura Davies, Caroline Hedwall and Sophie Gustafson would all need one of Lotta Neumann’s four picks. Behind the scenes, things are

www.ladygolferonline.co.uk

far more advanced and the Swede has already chosen the outfits, picked the brains of 2011 skipper Alison Nicholas and chosen the menus and playlist for the team bus. We speak as Neumann is on her way to Phoenix to play in a Legends Tour event and, as ever, she is charm personified. She sadly lost her father over the new year but she remains giggly, fun and down to earth. Whatever happens in Denver in the middle of August, you suspect that Neumann will handle it beautifully.

INTERVIEW

Rehearsal The threehole mini challenge.

How are preparations going? Everything is going good, I get a lot of help from the LET and I’m just putting together my schedule to get out to and chat with some of the girls at a few events. I’ll go to the Kraft and maybe a day at the Kia Classic in San Diego and then I’ll be looking to go to the event in Germany in May and then the US Open. And then of course the British Open. How have you been since your father’s death? I was in Sweden a lot in the new year. It is tough and isn’t a fun thing to deal with but he had a good life and lived to 83. I miss the phone calls and getting some good advice. Have you had much chance to sit down with some of the prospective team? At Hoylake we invited potential players to a pavilion by the 18th hole where the girls could drop in and say hi. It was great for me as there were quite a few who I had never met before like Carolta

www.ladygolferonline.co.uk

Ciganda, Caroline Masson and Carly Booth. I could ask them about their games and their schedules so it was a nice insight and very relaxed. A few will be at the Kraft so there will hopefully be time to have a coffee and I can answer any questions that might be on their mind. I also spoke with Alison Nicholas – we sat down for quite some time and she gave me some great things and was very organised. She said to call or email any time which I will do and I will see Helen Alfredsson at one of the Legends events so will pick her brain a bit as well.

Off duty Baseball action in Colorado

On the course, did you learn much at Hoylake? Not really no, that was so hard for the girls, the conditions were brutal. What about get-togethers ahead of the match? We are trying to set up a practice session in the summer and find a date that everyone can make in Colorado. It will help to get familiar with the course and the surroundings so when we get around to the Solheim they know where the locker room and driving range is and they are as comfortable as possible. We will invite quite a few players.

What is Colorado like? I like the course and think the girls will really like it. have people out there to follow every match and help with fruit and drinks or any other requests. It is kind of a fun course to play, with pretty big and undulating greens which will take a bit of getting used to. A big thing is the altitude as the ball will go close to 10 per cent further. It is also quite hilly. It is a good matchplay course, the 16th has a big tree in the middle and you can go either side of it and make the hole quite a lot shorter if you go down the tighter right side. So there will be some interesting strategy. What happened when Sandra Gal and Anna Nordqvist took on Angela Stanford and Stacy Lewis? They played three holes and our girls won – which will give them some confidence! They really enjoyed the course and played some other holes and got buggies to have a look at the other holes.

INTERVIEW

What other aspects have gone into the planning behind the scenes already? We are working on a playlist for the bus ride which will be 2530 minutes to get them ready for the day and will do a mix of music for the team room. We have also been looking at the menus for the hotel and team room and things like nutrition bars, decorations, and players and caddies’ gifts. We’ll try to get all that done as quickly as possible. Everything takes longer than you think and I don’t want to be thinking about these type of things in the run up to the matches themselves. So, then we can focus on the picks and the pairings long with my assistants Carin (Koch) and Annika (Sorenstam). Was it an easy decision to have Carin and Annika as your vice-captains? Yes, I am pretty close with both of them and have known them for such a long time. Between us we have some great experience and the three of us will talk a lot. Annika will hopefully be able to come out to some events, and lives in the States, while Carin still plays on the LET. I will stick to two, I’m not sure you can have more than two, but you can also pick helpers and have people out there to follow every match and help with fruit and drinks or any other requests. What colours can we expect to see Europe in? We have picked all the outfits thanks to Abacus, they’ve done it before and did a great job so they pretty much came up with the outfits and know what is fashionable. We know pretty much know the Americans will be in red, white and blue so we know what not to clash with! How much thought have you given to the pairings? Because of the altitude it will

16 Lady Golfer

The team Assistants Carin and Annika

“I will ask everyone who they want to play with”

be tiring to walk 36 holes, mentally more than physically. The players are all in good shape but it will be important to keep people rested and have some energy for the singles and the 12 points that are left to play for. It is hard to think of any pairings now, so much is down to who makes the team, who is playing well and who wants to play with who. I will ask everyone who they want to play with, it is a long time to be with someone and so stressful that you want to be comfortable with your partner and enjoy each other’s company and pump each other up. Some of the girls don’t know some of the Europeans quite as well but hopefully the get-together will help with that. Have you spoken much with opposite number Meg? Meg is a good friend. She called when my father passed but we haven’t caught up since the fall. No doubt we will catch up at the Kraft. Carlota Ciganda currently leads qualification, what do you know of her? I saw her for just a couple of holes at the British and she was playing with Carly Booth and Laura Davies which was fun. She is a super nice girl and we had emailed a bit and I am looking forward to watching her at the Kraft. She seems very down to earth and is very serious about her game and very popular. It was funny as a couple of people told me I better pick her for the team but the way she is playing she might not need my help. You are now a year into your captaincy, are you enjoying the role? I am enjoying it, I am really looking forward to getting out there. So far it has been a lot of emails but this year the fun really starts.

SPANISH BACKBONE

NO ‘LD’ FOR FIRST TIME?

MATTHEW AND WHO ELSE?

WHAT ABOUT AMERICA?

As things stand we have three Spanish girls in the team, two of them rookies. Over the years we have relied on an English and Swedish backbone, this year Spain could be our most featured country for the first time. Carlota Ciganda was playing on the Access Tour in 2011, she then won the Order of Merit (and Rookie of the Year) last year. She first came to our attention when she beat Anna Nordqvist in the final of the British Amateur at Alwoodley in 2007. Beatriz Recari has now won twice on the LPGA Tour having captured the Kia Classic in March – in her first LET event she holed a 4-iron in the playoff in Finland to open her account. Aza Munoz makes up the trio and her debut, and that approach to the 17th in Ireland, demonstrated huge nerve and skill.

Laura Davies and Sophie Gustafson have an astonishing 20 Solheim appearances between them but there is a real possibility that neither will be at Colorado GC. Davies will turn 50 this year and, on current form, it would take some leap of faith to pick her as a wildcard. She enjoyed an incredible five wins in 2010 but has since failed to add another one. Gustafson was the star of the Killeen Castle show with four points from four outings, and proved lethal alongside Caroline Hedwall, but her game is a shadow of then. Recently there has been a flurry of missed cuts and not too much cause for optimism. The Swede made her debut in 1998 and has been an ever-present since, Davies has never missed a match. All that could soon change though, you would imagine, not without a fight.

The British and Irish could well be limited come August. As ever Catriona Matthew looks likely to net a place but then things begin to get a little bit sketchy. Last time, Mel Reid topped the qualifying but she is currently down in 12th place while Scotland’s Carly Booth and the Johnsons, Flic and Trish, are above her in the standings. One outsider is Charley Hull who has only just turned professional but already has a second place after a brilliant debut in Morocco. It seems that the English girl has been around for years but is still only 17 and it would be an incredible story to go from Curtis to Solheim Cup in just over a year. The general feeling is that the LPGA players tend to get the nod for the wildcards which won’t add too much hope for further GB&I interest.

The Americans have modified their qualifying system with two players getting the 9th and 10th positions from the world rankings instead of the points list, to be complemented by two wildcards. Currently there is a familiar look to the leading qualifiers but then we have the likes of Lexi Thompson and Jessica Korda in place to debut. Three years ago the pair led off the American assault on GB&I in the 2010 Curtis Cup – at the end of the week Thompson would accumulate 4½ points from five outings, Korda 3½. Together they were unbeatable and it would be fascinating to see whether Meg Mallon would put them out as a pairing in the Solheim. In Ireland the last three players to make the side were Christina Kim, Vicky Hurst and Ryann O’Toole – all three are nowhere near to getting a chance to get their revenge.

INTERVIEW

Di Dougherty LG MEETS

Dan Murphy chats to the TV presenter and Lynx Golf ambassador about Sky Sports, the new man in her life and links courses What was it like presenting Sky Sports’ golf coverage? Presenting the golf on Sky Sports was fantastic. I love golf and I love talking about golf. At the end of 2011 I decided to step away from work for a short time to start a family. Our little boy Maximilian James Dougherty arrived in August 2012. My time away from broadcasting has made me very hungry to return. I’m very much looking forward to 2013. Can we expect to see you back on our screens soon? I have been doing some work on Sky News Sunrise as well as branching out into other sports. I presented the World Series Squash Finals on Sky Sports in January, which was incredible. The fitness of the professionals is incredible and I am now a keen squash player! I am also really excited to be working for the Golf Channel at the end of May at Wentworth during the PGA Championship. I know a lot of the guys over in the States from various trips to the Majors and I can’t wait to work with them. The programmes air in the States only but I will be blogging about my work and tweeting no doubt. Who was your favourite Sky pundit to work alongside?

They are all great in their own way. Ewen Murray makes me laugh all the time! Wayne Riley is full of energy and I loved our ad libs out on the course at various European Tour events. His energy is engaging. I started at Sky as a runner and would regularly make Richard Boxall his breakfast! Richard has a very dry sense of humour, which I love. Rob Lee’s laugh is hilarious and I always get the giggles when he does. I still chat to them and enjoy their banter. How nervous were you ahead of the Ryder Cup opening ceremony in 2010 and is that the highlight of your career so far? The Ryder Cup in 2010 was brilliant. I wasn’t actually nervous during the Opening Ceremony. I was working with a fantastic team, great floor manager (Kate Strophair you know who you are), Jason Wessely producing and Mike Allen directing. I couldn’t go wrong. The chaps talking in your ear are very important and it’s so lovely to have calm controlled voices coming through to you. It makes a huge difference and puts one at ease. I had the easier job of just talking about the golf, the players had the tough job out

on the course! If you’d given me a golf club on that 1st tee then I’d be nervous. How is your golf at the moment, are you a member of your club and what do you play off? My golf is okay at the moment. I don’t want to say too much more as I’ll probably jinx my game! Aren’t we all so superstitious! I play regularly at Wentworth and have met a great group of ladies there. My handicap is 11 at present. My lowest was 6 when I was a teenager but due to work (yes – any old excuse) I have a few more shots now, which I certainly enjoy. I want to get back down to single figures by the end of the year. Note to self: Must practise more I am really looking forward to some warmer weather this summer though. Fingers crossed. How much help has husband Nick been to your game? I play regularly and play a lot of golf with my husband, Nick. I think I’m a pretty good student and listen to most things he says! As a wife though, I think it’s easy to have selective hearing!

INTERVIEW

In the limelight At the Ryder Cup opening ceremony 2010 (left) and (right) at the Masters with Monty

Perfect match Will Di play with husband Nick (left) at St Andrews (right)?

He is very patient with me as I can lose my cool out on the course and not talk for a hole or two. That’s a normal relationship on the golf course though isn’t it?! I think it’s because I grew up in such a sports-mad competitive environment. How well do you think ladies’ golf is covered by the media – whether in print or on TV? I think the ladies’ game is going from strength to strength. There is so much talent on both sides of the Atlantic and in the Far East and the various Tours are finally getting recognition. I had a wonderful time at the Solheim Cup in 2011 and got to know the girls well. They are hardworking, diligent professionals and their games reflect that. I love reading golf magazines with in-depth interviews about various players to get an ‘inside the ropes’ feel about their game and life. Would you prefer to watch men’s or ladies’ professional golf and why? I think the two games are different and I appreciate them both. I can obviously relate to how the ladies play and can compare my

22 Lady Golfer

yardages and my own game plan. The mens’ game is different for me because I simply can’t play that way in terms of driving distance for instance. Both professional games are exciting and enthralling. Are we doing enough to encourage girls to take up golf and if not what needs to change in your opinion? I think one huge influence is if your family play the game. I started because my mum would take me to play most weekends and she got me involved in junior coaching in our area. That led on to coaching with Cheshire Girls’ and membership of Stockport Golf Club. That is not to say one can’t become involved in the game if it’s not a family sport. Driving ranges and municipal courses have coaching courses for children at discount prices and equipment is available to borrow and use. If you look in your particular area you are bound to find some coaching sessions and a par-3 course to play to start with. Role models like Melissa Reid and Paula Creamer certainly help encourage girls in to the game and their hard-working,

girl-power image is a very strong message to young girls. I also believe the Ladies European Tour and LPGA do a great job at getting the word out there. Let’s continue to support it. Do you prefer inland or seaside golf and what’s your favourite course? Seaside courses. One of my favourite places in the world is St Andrews and the Old Course. My brother went to university there so I remember the days when we would drive up from our home in the north west. My mum and dad would take us around the courses up there and I love nothing better than playing a round of golf breathing in the sea air. Kingsbarns is also wonderful. I have had the privilege of playing in the Dunhill Links a couple of times and playing in a professional tournament at my favourite location was brilliant. It was therefore a nobrainer when we were choosing our wedding venue – Nick and I got married up there in December 2011. I hope one day I can partner Nick in the Dunhill Links. That will be an interesting dynamic! I promise, Nick, I will listen to you...

DI AND LYNX “I became the ambassador for Lynx last year and the brand is growing from strength to strength. We all remember Ernie Els and Fred Couples winning Majors with Lynx equipment, the company are building on that heritage and are keen to remember their history in today’s modern market. “The company also recognises the importance of the women’s Tour and is very keen to support female British golfers. “Lynx have just signed their first pro, Lydia Hall who won the British Ladies Masters last year. I can’t wait to see Lydia use the clubs in competition. Design, style and performance are key for Lynx and their innovative ideas are clear to see from their latest ranges.” Visit www.lynxgolf.co.uk

NIKE VR_S Covert Driver This looks like it means business with its dramatic red colouring. The huge cavity back can only be seen from the sole, thus giving you a more conventional view at address. When I am sent adjustable drivers, I rarely bother to make any changes to them. Ladies’ lofts are invariably too high, and the shafts are always too flexible for me, so I tend to hit the ball high and left. And this was no exception. However, this time I had the technology to change things. It is simplicity itself to change the loft – anywhere from 8.5 to 12.5° – and have the choice of three face angles. Within seconds I had altered it to 9° with an open face angle to counteract the softer shaft and instantly started ripping it down the middle and with a much more penetrating flight. When you can tweak this to suit your own preferences or conditions, it will suit everyone! SRP: £249

GALVIN GREEN Ella/Erin Compression Top & leggings I do deprive myself of the ultimate benefits of skintight compression technology, because, as I don’t enjoy feeling squeezed, I always order a size larger! Compression fit is designed to increase blood flow in the muscles, giving greater flexibility and reducing lactic acid build-up. As a base layer, it feels great, and I really like the slight V neck; many round necks feel tight round your throat. Great moisture wicking and freedom to move. SRP: £39 each

BIOFLOW Sport Bracelet I really like the look of this silicone wrist band. It comes in different sizes and is completely waterproof, so you don’t have to remove it for showering, swimming, etc. Magnets have been clinically proved to improve blood flow and encourage healing and pain relief. I gave it to my mother who was in pain and although it eased, I can’t say whether it was due to the wrist band or the painkillers. Christina Kim swear by hers, and I’m going to keep wearing mine – just in case! SRP: £29.99, Twin £39.99

LADIES WHO LAUNCH COBRA AMP Cell Driver With strong, fast-swinging lady golfers in mind, Madeleine reviews clubs designed for men

FOOTJOY Windshirt I know it comes in two colours, but I don’t think you can beat the periwinkle! It’s a lovely shade of blue, and beautifully offset with the white side vents and zip. The FootJoy cuts are always very flattering with the contoured, tailored waist bands. The full zip is more convenient than windshirts you have to pull over your head, and the short sleeves make it ideal for warmer days when the wind would otherwise cut through, necessitating a pullover. Not any more with this high-performance windproof shell. SRP: £47

If you find ladies’ clubs are too soft and flexible, but men’s are a bit too stiff, here is the perfect solution – this men’s driver with a light shaft. It is more akin to the flex of a senior shaft, and it’s absolutely marvellous! The hexagon patterned grip is extremely good, and the head comes in a range of colours – blue / silver / orange / red. The loft adjustment is simple – just a couple of twists with the wrench. I started at 10.5°, and hit it very well, if a tad higher than my normal flight, so I knocked it down to 9.5° and loved it even more. It does feel incredibly light and absolutely effortless to use. Every shot just flew straight down the middle and at whatever trajectory I wanted, thanks to the adjustment system. If you are looking for a new driver, you definitely want to put this on your list to try! SRP: £249

Amanda Ross tests out a Callaway X Hot driver

PINNACLE Bling Balls I may have blinked when I saw the assortment of pink, yellow, violet and orange balls, but it actually didn’t feel at all strange playing with such vibrant colours. The advantage is obvious during frosty rounds, but the colours are highly visible in all conditions, which is a real bonus if you tend to lose the flight if white balls against the sky. They are long – as you’d expect from Pinnacle – but they don’t feel or sound hard, which is a real plus for control. SRP: £14 per dozen

www.ladygolferonline.co.uk

I took the Callaway X hot driver to the range one evening and tested it against my own Big Bertha Callaway. X hot is much lighter and is attractive – grey and pale pink with a patterned shaft. It has an adjustable face with three settings – I started with standard. The club is so much lighter I was hitting most shots left so adjusted to open. This was perfect, I didn’t hit one bad shot. It was very forgiving and the ball really did explode off the face. It felt so easy! By the end of the bucket I reckon it was going 20 yards further, so it is definitely hot! SRP: £249

TOUR TIPS: What you can learn from Azahara Munoz

One interesting characteristic, which is slightly unusual, is the right palm coming off the grip through the impact area. This can often happen when tremendous force is created on the downswing and the right arm and hand release towards the target after impact rather than exiting around the body. Vijay Singh is a prime example of this in the men`s game.

This excellent swing is very rotational in the hips and shoulders through the ball which is a real speed generator. Another power source is created when she pushes her feet off the ground through impact. This enables Azahara to create maximum speed in the clubhead for her size and strength.

Your flexible

If you’re not carrying at least one hybrid then you are really missing out

W

E have all been faced with a shot that requires us to hit the ball a long distance from a lie that is not quite good enough to use a long iron. This shot in particular is much easier to hit using a hybrid. The way a hybrid is designed – with the centre of gravity lower and deeper in the head – helps us get as much mass as possible under the ball, and get some elevation out of these tough lies.

Rachel Jennings is a second year professional on the Ladies European Tour. You can follow Rachel on Twitter @racheyjgolf

32 Lady Golfer

www.ladygolferonline.co.uk

LG pp 32-33 Jennings Instruction 19/04/2013 14:59 Page 33

The most important thing when playing this shot is the set-up, the ball must be forward in the stance with the

weight in a neutral position. Think of swinging the club as you would do a mid-iron and not your fairway wood.

We can see how much better the hybrid is able to flatten the grass and get under the ball. Long irons

tend to dig into the ground and the thinner profile causes them to struggle getting under the ball.

When playing this shot, it is important not to hit down too steeply as a hybrid works best when it is allowed to swing

through the grass and lift the ball out. Trust the club to do the work rather than manufacturing anything.

To avoid picking the club up too steeply, the hands are pushed slightly forward when in the address position and

we try to drive the hands through the strike to keep the club swinging through the grass.

HAVE A

DIVOT PARTY

Fairway woods shouldn’t be hit in the same way as your driver – they are more like an iron shot, says Julie Greciet

W

HILE you must hit up through the ball with your driver, I like to take a very shallow divot with my fairway woods… which shows I have produced a descending blow into the back of the ball. It’s how Tiger and Sergio hit their fairway woods... so it’s good enough for me! Set up with the ball an inch inside your front foot from where you would have it for you driver. This encourages the divot but keeps your body ‘behind’ the ball so it is not too deep. Your set-up means your hands will be level with the ball, rather than ahead of it as it is with an iron shot... but you should never try to scoop the ball. This is the crucial error, and is the benefit of creating a small divot – you cannot create a divot while scooping!

FITNESS

THE TRUTH ABOUT

IMPROVING YOUR CORE Why sit-ups are NOT the secret to better balance. These quick exercises will help...

THE START POSITION Get on the floor and place your arms shoulder width apart, palms facing forwards. Have your weight evenly distributed between your palms and your toes. It’s a bit like a press-up position, and even merely getting into this position – which is only the starting point – is already starting to fire your core.

You might have heard a ‘better core’ will improve your stability and balance, and therefore your swing. That is perfectly true. But you might also be under the impression that the way to improve your core is sit-ups. You’re wrong – they won’t. Well, let’s qualify that; they will help, but they are not the best way to improve this aspect of your fitness for golf. Here, I’ll show you some exercises which will make you much fitter for golf, which will allow you to swing the club

more like the way your local PGA pro would like you to. What’s more, you can make these improvements in your living room while watching the golf on a Sunday night! Kati Crossfield is a personal trainer based at David Lloyd gym in Leeds. She can be contacted on 07786 557822 or by visiting davidlloyd.co.uk

FIRING UP THE ENGINE Now we get really going – this exercise really fires your core. Raise your right hand and left foot off the ground... and hold for 20 seconds. If you can hold for 30 seconds, do so. If you can’t make that your target to reach at some point down the line. Repeat for the left side, and do three sets of these.

COOL

Red, white and blue are the colours of the new season

BRITANN “It was cool. In fact it was positively freezing” Justine Board on how the Lady Golfer team put together our first ever fashion shoot Don’t get me wrong, I like snow. Sometimes I love it. I heart white Christmases, fresh powder on an Alpine ski slope, the satisfying underfoot creak when you tramp though the stuff. I just don’t like it when it is officially Spring and I am trying to organise a Spring/Summer golf fashion shoot. Outside. AND IT IS SNOWING. It’s not just the unhappy combination of thin cotton singlet and biting wind – this is the UK, that happens in August. It is the huge, can’t-ignore-them, settling-on-youreyelashes snowflakes, covering the greens, drifting in the air, photo-bombing our pictures and scuppering our best-laid plans. I should explain. Here at Lady Golfer we decided it was high time we showcased women’s golf wear in the environment it is designed for – out on the course on actual Lady Golfers, so that you, the reader, can see how the clothes will realistically look, move and perform. We recruited the services of some magnificent Yorkshire ladies, members at Rudding Park and Ripon, and after being blighted by the white stuff at our original shoot location, Rudding Park, still blanketed in snow and freezing temperatures five days after the initial snowfall, we re-directed models, photographer, hair and make-up,

clothes, props and equipment to the snow-free Aldwark Manor. There is a patron saint of golf – St Andrew predictably – but he must have been otherwise engaged that morning because right on cue, the moment we had all assembled, the heavens opened and down it came like God’s dandruff. And so here we are, our inaugural Spring/Summer fashion shoot. In the snow. But then we started thinking... surely this is what golf is about? Taking on the elements, out in all weathers, battling both yourself and whatever nature can throw at you. Just look at Scott and Cabrera duking it out at Augusta under heavy April showers. And with golf clubs struggling after a long, harsh winter, with spectator numbers dwindling at domestic competitions to the extent that the European Tour now includes events in Dubai, maybe we need a rallying cry to encourage everyone to support British golf this summer, whether by playing at your local club or turning out at domestic events and cheering on our players at all levels. Maybe we need to follow the example of the Yorkshire ladies in our shoot, and get out there and get stuck in, whatever the weather. We hope you enjoy our first ever fashion feature, focusing this issue on the classic, super-smart (and patriotic) colour combination of red, white and blue. Luckily including waterproofs.

CLOSE HOUSE New resort in the north-east of England is ideal for an away day

LOSE House is a bright new club in the north-east of England boasting two 18-hole courses, a welcoming clubhouse and a 35-bedroom hotel – making it the ideal destination for corporate and society golfers. And despite only opening a

couple of years ago, it is about to get even better with Lee Westwood putting his stamp on the two courses. The Ryder Cup star has put his mark on the Lee Westwood Colt and the Lee Westwood Filly courses, with work beginning this summer to refresh them. It is another little

piece of history for Close House, with its ancient Roman monument that runs close to Hadrian’s Wall and the birthplace of George Stephenson, the inventor of steam locomotion. Located eight miles from the centre of Newcastle and the same distance from

Newcastle Airport, Close House is ideally situated in 400 acres of beautiful countryside. Resident teaching pro Sally Hinton has a fine reputation for improving the game’s of all standards of golfer. “Close House has something different, something special,” said Westwood.

WELLBEING

How spas can make yo

One of the common misconceptions about going to a spa is that it is solely about indulgence, which of course, is the overriding reason most of us go along. However, perhaps one of the best things about them, particularly now that the term encompasses so many different facilities, is that they are an enjoyable gateway to addressing all sorts of health concerns and learning new ways to tweak our lifestyles to be happy and healthy in the long term. So here is just a soupcon from a diverse range of complementary therapies which can help with everything from stress to coping with cancer.

THE MENOPAUSE For some women it’s a life event that has very little impact, while for others menopause leaves an indelible and often intolerable mark on their day-to-day lives. However, while it often remains a 56 Lady Golfer

somewhat unspoken trauma, an increasing number of experts are working on holistic methods and lifestyle solutions with long-term effects. At Grayshott Hotel Spa, their team have extensive knowledge about nutrition for women and the symptoms and holistic solutions for women both during and after they reach the menopause, to make the transition as seamless as possible, or even to improve your health afterwards.

ECZEMA AND PSORIASIS Anyone who has a skin condition, whether it’s severe dry skill, eczema, or psoriasis, will know that treating them is an ongoing battle. Often creams, lotions and potions seem to initially treat the surface but don’t have a long-lasting effect either on discomfort or appearance. At Donnington Valley they offer an Aqua Sun Mineral Treatment which sees you soak under a

UV canopy, in a bath containing 21 minerals and organic plant extracts from the Dead Sea. As a source of Vitamin D, it has a particularly positive effect on soothing skin conditions, while also countering Seasonal Affected Disorder, acne, and aiding detox.

INSOMNIA Insomnia, and sleep problems can affect us at any age but particularly so when we are changing routines, perhaps as a result of retirement or going through life changes such as menopause or bereavement. It is common practice to believe that most sleeping problems are the result of an overactive mind, but according to sleep specialist, Tej Samani, there is a whole catalogue of reasons as to why people can struggle to sleep, many of them physical. Another specialist now running his clinics through Grayshott www.ladygolferonline.co.uk

you healthier

Hotel and Spa, Samani’s programmes are accessible with the wider support of the venue’s health and fitness facilities, adding a concentrated healing dimension and a kick start to change.

FATIGUE As an offshoot of insomnia, stress, or dietary imbalances, chronic fatigue can really have an impact on your quality of life. Osteopathy, and in particular cranial osteopathy, can not only help to induce a better night’s sleep, but also provide a prescriptive element, helping to identify concerns across the body that might be causing fatigue or contributing to it without you realising. Thanks to their recent introduction of ESPA Life however, Gleneagles can help. The advantage of these treatments being delivered at a spa is there are so many other surrounding therapies available in the same place to www.ladygolferonline.co.uk

Our well-being expert Bonnie Friend on why spas are about more than relaxation

add support; here, the on-site naturopath, who oversees ESPA Life, offers lifestyle and nutritional advice to help ensure that the effects of the treatment are ongoing.

OSTEOARTHRITIS While acupuncture is often associated with pain control, it has much broader applications. The World Health Organization recognises the use of acupuncture in treating a wide range of medical problems from digestive disorders to respiratory disorders, skin disorders to neurological and muscular disorders, including osteoarthritis, which is a particular issue when we get a bit older. As a specialised treatment it isn’t available at all spas, but combining acupuncture with a luxury holiday, The BodyHoliday in St Lucia, includes acupuncture among its collection of holistic treatments, delivered by Taoist practitioner, Toby Maguire.

BACK ACHE In its 21st-century guise, Shiatsu can incorporate a number of variant practices, but at its core it is therapeutic body work that can include osteopathy, acupressure points, stretches, and joint mobilisation. The effects vary as it is very much a practice that is tailored to the individual, but it is often used to help ease back problems, particularly if it is followed up with regular yoga and other recommendations that therapists may advise. It has also been used to help reduce tension, and many therapists use it as a way of helping to relieve the psychological stress of illnesses including Parkinson’s Disease and cancer. Penha Longa Hotel and Golf Resort is amongst the many venues that offer Shiatsu, in the glorious surroundings of their Six Senses Spa … and yes, they do offer yoga by the pool as well. Claire Kane Men are from Mars... vive la difference!

O

VER the years I’ve played golf I have noticed men and women approach the game differently. Now I appreciate this may be a controversial subject, and my observations won’t apply to everyone, but I’m sure I’m not the only one to notice a different slant between the sexes. For a start, men love a wager on the course. They adore their skins and bits where birdies, barkies (hitting a tree) and sandies are just a few of the numerous accumulators and side bets. Wads of cash are often all on the last putt (no wonder some poor souls develop the yips) and the unwritten etiquette is apparently always making sure you have enough money to cover your worst round ever! In contrast, women tend just to play and score! When it comes to organising games, women consult their diaries and negotiate dates with friends and fellow players and book games weeks ahead whereas men are known to simply walk off the 18th tee and shout out ‘see you the same time next week’. Women think nothing of multitasking on the course, swinging a club and discussing many a problem during a game. Issues about the kids (especially the grown-up variety), the economy and politics as well as respective careers are covered. Plus, rounds have been known to include the odd bit of gossip too. The men’s game is frequently full of banter, taking the mickey at every opportunity, interspersed with snippets of 66 Lady Golfer

sport and the odd mention of work thrown in. Men’s competitive natures can make it hard for them to resist impulse buying new technology on sale in the pro shop – anything to give them a temporary edge. Women are certainly not backwards when it comes to knowing what’s new on the market but, for many, value is

the name of the game and they might want to try before they buy. Females can be savvy shoppers and far more likely to ‘pick and mix’ their golfing wardrobe with interchangeable clothes from the high street or bargains bagged from the web. They’ll buy the club colours but you can bet if M&S are selling the same shade then a few shrewd individuals will be spotted wearing it. On the other hand, there are many men who have a ‘yearly, one-shop’ policy where they’ll buy the same jumper in three colours and repeat for the next decade. The golf bag of the average female is stuffed with items to cover every eventuality. We’re talking clothing for any climate change, a first aid kit a paramedic would be proud of and enough food to sustain a

well-built fourball for a week or more. The average man bag contains golf clubs, half a dozen balls and, in the depths of winter, maybe some wetweather gear! Finally, when it comes to food, Desperate Dan-sized bacon butties, doorstop toasties and robust curries are offered in the clubhouse to appeal to the healthy, masculine appetite. In contrast it’s pots of tea or coffee, toasted teacakes or a light meal for the ladies. The one thing the sexes appear to have in common is a glass of something from the bar and perhaps alongside a few cheesy chips!
