AASPT MEMBERS NAMED CATHERINE WORTHINGTON FELLOWS Congratulations to AASPT treasurer, Bryan Heiderscheit, PT, PhD, Donna Frownfelter, PT, DPT, MA, and Robert S. Gailey, PT, PhD, for being named Catherine Worthington Fellows of the APTA. Dr. Heiderscheit, Dr. Frownfelter and Dr. Gailey will be conferred with this honor at NEXT 2019 in Chicago.

Bryan C. Heiderscheit, PT, PhD is a Professor in the Departments of Orthopedics and

Rehabilitation and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin(UW)-Madison. He is the Director of the Runners’ Clinic through the UW Sports Medicine Center; Director of Badger Athletic Performance Research for UW Athletics; and Co-director of the UW Neuromuscular Biomechanics Laboratory. Dr. Heiderscheit’s research is aimed at understanding and enhancing the clinical management of orthopedic conditions, with particular focus on runningrelated injuries. Support for his research includes the National Institutes of Health, NFL Medical Charities, NBA and GE. He is an Editor for the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy and a member of the Executive Committee of the American Academy of Sports Physical Therapy.

Donna Lee Frownfelter, PT, DPT, MA, is the Assistant Professor and Director of PostProfessional Studies at Rosalind Franklin University in North Chicago, IL. Dr. Frownfelter received her Physical Therapy Education at Northwestern University Programs in Physical Therapy and her certificate in Respiratory Care from the University of Chicago. Additionally, she has an MS in Organizational Development from Loyola University of Chicago and her DPT from RFUMS. Dr. Frownfelter is

recognized internationally as a teacher, clinician, author, and consultant in the area of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Physical Therapy and is an APTA Board Certified Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Clinical Specialist as well as a Registered Respiratory Care Practitioner. Her most recent book that she co-edited, entitled Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Physical Therapy; Evidence and Practice is the primary text used in many Physical and Respiratory Therapy Programs. She is currently in the process of the 6th edition of the book which will have an “e” book format as well as a hard copy textbook. She has received many teaching awards and has presented at APTA National Conventions as well as many Continuing Education Courses. She has served two terms as the President of the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section of the APTA, and is a member of the American Academy of Sports Physical Therapy.

She is a Board Member of the Respiratory Health Association of Metropolitan Chicago and serves on the COPD Advisory Committee. She is certified to present Courage to Quit Smoking Cessation Programs. She was elected a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, the only physical therapist to be granted that distinction.

Robert S. Gailey, PhD, PT (Professor) has been at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Department of Physical Therapy for 30 years. He also has a joint appointment as a

Health Science Researcher with Miami Veterans Affairs Medical Center and is the Director of the Functional Outcomes Research & Evaluation Center. His doctorate in prosthetics and orthotics was received from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland where he developed the Amputee Mobility Predictor an objective measure of amputee function and most recently developed the Comprehensive High-Activity Mobility Predictor.

He has authored over 50 publications and has continued research efforts directed toward: amputee rehabilitation, the biomechanics and metabolic cost of prosthetic gait, functional assessment and athletic pursuits of the amputee as well as other athletes with disabilities across the life span. He was the recipient of the ISPO’s 1995 Forcheimer Prize for Research, the Amputee Coalition of America’s 2003 Dr. Ernest Burgess Award and recently the American Physical Therapy’s 2009 Henry O. Florence & P. Kendall Practice Award recipient.

THE AASPT KEVIN WILK TRAVELING FELLOWSHIP: SPRING 2019 The AASPT Kevin Wilk Traveling Fellowship program was created to allow professionals to obtain an advanced educational experience in a compressed time frame under the mentorship of clinical experts.

Twice a year, three AASPT members are selected to participate in the program that is completely funded by the AASPT and corporate sponsors DJO Global and LightForce Therapy Lasers. The spring and fall cohorts travel to three different clinical sites where the fellows are involved in various activities including surgical observation, didactic component, clinical observation of the host therapist, and social activities to expand the fellows’ professional network.

The Traveling Fellows and Their Reflections on the Program Dr. Shanon Fronek is a Physical Therapist and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, with sports residency training in Division One athletics. She is completing an Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy Fellowship program through the American Academy of Manipulative Therapy.

Dr. Fronek is also serving her second term on the Communications Committee with the AASPT. She currently works as a traveling physical therapist while she pursues her educational goals and works towards career advancement in higher level athletics.

He works at TRIA Orthopedic Center in Woodbury, MN where he is the director of their lower extremity return to sport program and member of their patellofemoral clinic. Prior to becoming a physical therapist, he worked as an athletic trainer at a Division Three College in Minnesota.

Chad loves to work with athletes and fitness in general, and has had great success promoting individuals to their next level in fitness and sports.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: BETH MORIN, PT, LMT

By Sylvia Czuppon Beth Morin is the founder and owner of a cash-based private practice in Avon, Connecticut.

However, she did not always know that she wanted to be a physical therapist, let alone own her own business.

Her path to becoming a physical therapist was not a direct one.

She started as an Athletic Training major at Bridgewater State University (MA) before transferring to Springfield College’s Master’s Degree Physical Therapy Program. Unfortunately, she received some bad advice about her career choice upon arriving, and she transitioned majors, graduating with a Bachelor’s in Therapeutic Recreation. She went on to work for the Paralympics in 1997 and then at the Rehab Institute of Chicago’s Sports Center, which facilitated the return of patients out of inpatient rehab and into the community through sports activity. In 1999, while trying to decide on her long-term career, she became a licensed massage therapist. However, after suffering a wrist injury playing soccer, Beth became concerned about the physical stress the profession would take on her body, so she went back to the University of Massachusetts to get her Bachelor’s Degree in Human Nutrition (2004) – a choice that she thought would give her a “fall back” career. She continued to work as a massage therapist, but noticed

that her clients were always wanting more from their treatments than she was able to give. She reconsidered PT as a career and went back to school (again!), this time to get her Master’s in Physical Therapy from American International College in 2009.

Upon graduating, Beth started working as a physical therapist at Hartford HealthCare Rehab Network in an outpatient orthopedic setting.

During her last 4 years there, she was key in establishing their sports PT program. She developed a strong interest in

Physicians were eager for her to work with them to create return to sport protocols for their patients, but the time constraints and productivity focus of her job made it difficult for her to complete them. She was offered the opportunity to sublease space in a gym for minimal cost. While initially Beth was hoping to work part-time in the gym running her own business while working at Hartford HealthCare, she eventually decided that leaving to open her own full-time practice would be the best decision. In August 2017, she opened BAM (Balance, Agility, Movement) PT and Wellness Center, LLC. Without any formal business experience, Beth had to learn along the way.

First, she chose a cash-based model because 1) it eliminated the hassle of working with insurance companies (including time, paperwork, and their various restrictions); 2) it allowed her to treat the way she wanted, as frequently as she wanted, for as long as she wanted (important note: Connecticut allows treatment for 30 days without a physician referral); and 3) some of the services she was offering (such as dry needling, cupping,

return to sport assessments, and injury prevention programs) are not typically covered by insurance.

In choosing a cash-based practice, Beth also had to determine appropriate pricing for services, so she elected to keep her pricing close to current physical therapy co-pays to be competitive with insurance-based clinics. Early, Beth says it was critical to learning town and state rules/regulations, as well as tax and compliance laws, as these are often variable and significantly affect budgeting.

In terms of clientele, approximately half of Beth’s current patients followed her from her old job or were referred by friends/family of former patients, but she also sees a fair number of athletes as well.

Marketing and advertising – including relying on social media, which many physical therapists are not comfortable with – were critical in the success of her business. With her extensive manual skills and training, Beth was able to market her unique approach to treatment to referring physicians and to the community as being as effective, if not more effective, than what is offered at insurance-based outpatient clinics. In the future, she is hoping to branch out further into young athlete injury prevention, but currently, as the sole therapist working in her clinic, she has to manage her work-life balance.

For those therapists interested in opening their own physical therapy practice, Beth strongly recommends constantly attending continuing education courses. In addition to learning new or advanced techniques, many courses can help you learn how to treat certain conditions more efficiently or how to reduce the physical strain on yourself (such as through using instrumentation). Most course instructors provide their contact information – take advantage of communicating with them to ask questions about how to assimilate the information/techniques into your clinical practice. Finally, she urges therapists to find an area of need, that they have a passion for, in Physical Therapy and get extensive training/experience in that area to create an area of specialty that can be a big area of marketing for a cash-based business. “Don’t give up. If opening your own practice is your goal, find a way. Your job is whatever you want it to be.”

Dr. Busconi is the Chief of Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy, UMass Memorial Medical Center; an Associate Professor of Orthopedics and Physical Rehabilitation, Pediatrics, and Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, as well as the Director, Sports Medicine Center, UMass Memorial Medical Center.

Dr. Busconi graduated from the Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, MA. He served his Residency at the UMass Memorial Medical Center - UMass Graduate Medical Education, and his Fellowship in Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy at UMass Memorial Medical Center - UMass Graduate Medical Education.

He is a Board Certified Sports Medicine, Orthopedic Surgery.

Dr. Busconi's clinical interests include arthroscopic surgery of sports and nonsports-related injuries, adult and pediatric orthopedic reconstructive surgery.

TEAMMATES AT TCC Our popular TeamMates at TCC event will be held on Friday, December 6, from 6 to 8:30 pm in the Expo Hall. This optional event is always a sellout!

This year, attendees will hear a presentation from Tim Vidale, PT, DPT, MBA, CSOMT. Tim Vidale is a graduate of Florida A&M University where he was a member of the Track and Field team. Dr. Vidale went on to attain his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Rutgers University.

Following graduation, Dr. Vidale relocated to Washington, D.C. where he eventually earned his MBA from George Washington University. He is currently completing his fellowship work to attain the FAAOMPT distinction through the Institute for Athlete Regeneration. His most recent post was as the Physical Therapist and Assistant Rehabilitation Coordinator for the Minnesota Twins.

Prior to that he owned and operated a sports Physical Therapy clinic in Washington, DC, while also serving as an Assistant Professor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Howard University. He was the Head Physical Therapist for the DC Slayers and DC Furies Rugby clubs from 20122016 and served Team USA as a Physical Therapist at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada. He also serves as the physical therapist for USA Softball.

Dr. Vidale is a published author, with publications in internationally distributed text books and scholarly journals and is also a content reviewer for the Interna-

tional Journal of Sports Physical Therapy. Dr. Vidale is also trained in Functional Dry Needling.

He has served as the Chairman of the Physical Therapy State Board for Washington, DC, on the Nominating and Resolutions committees for FSBPT, the Education committee for the Private Practice Section and as the former State Representative (Washington, DC) for AASPT. He currently serves on the Nominating Committee for AASPT. He is also active in the APTA, AAPT, ACSM and NSCA. He enjoys spending time with his wife, Jeanna and daughters, Taryn and Sage.

APTA ENTERS INTO A MEMORDANDUM OF AGREEMENT WITH THE US DEPARTMENT OF VETERAN AFFAIRS The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) has entered into a new Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to promote and enhance the health and well-being of our nation's veterans.

APTA's mission is to build a community that advances the profession of physical therapy to improve the health of society. VA is committed to pursuing responsible and productive publicprivate partnerships with nongovernmental organizations to provide services and support to reach more veterans.

"APTA finds its roots in the military, and we are thrilled to be partnering with VA to give back to America's veterans and ensure that they are receiving the physical therapy care they need," said APTA CEO Justin Moore, PT, DPT. "Our veterans sacrifice so much for our country, and for that we are grateful. I am confident this agreement will lead to even better health care, results, and, ultimately, improved quality of life for them."

PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED ATHLETE SIG CHANGES NAME TO ADAPTIVE SPORTS SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP! We are very excited to announce that the Physically Challenged Athlete SIG is changing our name to the Adaptive Sports SIG. This name change will allow the Adaptive Sports SIG to focus on the potential adaptations of the sport to promote safety and fairness for all athletes. While the SIG will still aid in the identification of athlete impairments, the focus of the SIG will be on how to maximize the ability of the athlete. The SIG name is “adaptive” and not “adapted” because we recognize many individuals with physical, intellectual, visual, and auditory impairments are competing in traditional sport. The SIG will continue to focus on serving clinicians who are seeking expertise in appropriate adaptations of sports equipment, rules & regulations, and classification of athletes as well as the promotion of sport for individuals with disabilities.

Kecia served many roles at Fairview. Kecia brought an unsurpassed exuberance and mesmerizing charisma and charm to this profession. The keynote lecture series now serves as a reminder and dedication to the educational foundation for clinical excellence Kecia advocated and directed.

Kecia L. Erickson, MS, PT, ATC was Director of Quality for the Orthopedic Service Line at Fairview Health Services, including Fairview Sports and Orthopedic Care, and the Institute for Athletic Medicine.

Kecia was also an active and dedicated member of the American Academy of Sports Physical Therapy (as SPTS). She was the recipient of the New Horizon Award in 1995, presented for recognition of advancement of sports physical therapy research.

She was a manuscript reviewer beginning in 2002 for Physical Therapy.

She completed over 30 presentations on numerous national stages on a variety of topics.
