o maybe summer can be summer again? It looks like we’re going to get there. Which means this particular special edition — our 11th annual Camps and Clinics Resource Guide — should prove a lot more valuable than the one we built for 2020. At this time last year, we were hopeful, but the thought of summer camps running like normal seemed like a longshot. And that’s definitely not the case for 2021. It’s been refreshing gathering our many pages of listings together and seeing current dates planned for camps we’ve helped promote for several years now. And now we put things in your hands. Check out the several listings we’ve compiled of camps and clinics throughout Northern California, and figure out how to reclaim summer. It’s hard not to be excited about where we’re heading seeing as how well the first two months of high school sports have gone. The football season, which is all but complete, certainly had its share of COVID cancellations due to testing delays and other things. But the world didn’t end and there were no major outbreaks. The next big test will of course be indoor sports. Basketball will begin over these last two weeks of April and be full-steam by May. We’re on top of that too, by the way. You can check out both our NorCal boys and girls basketball preview content at SportStarsMag.com. We’ve also got weekly baseball and softball rankings, and hoops rankings will begin the last week of the month as well. It’s all happening. Literally. We wouldn’t trade the craziness of the next two months for anything, certainly not the stillness of last April. But we’re definitely going to enjoy resting in mid-June. What will you be doing mid-June, sports fans? If you need some suggestions, we’ve got thirtysomething pages here of them. Just sayin’. ✪

ll coaches are different, and while philosophical differences some times come into play, parental concerns around coaching start at the most basic level: Is my child safe in his or her care? It’s a question the USA Volleyball and the NCVA take very seriously. General info about NCVA’s background checks usually amount to this line from the USAV Parent Guide: “Every adult over the age of 18 working with USAV juniors has a comprehensive background check performed biannually.” But what information — social security verification, address search, county courthouse and/or statewide search, national database and sex offender registry search — disqualifies a potential coach? The following automatic disqualifiers are listed in the USAV Screening Policy: All sex offenses and homicides, regardless of time limit; felony violence and felony drug offenses in the past 10 years; any misdemeanor violence offenses in the past seven years; any multiple misdemeanor drug and alcohol offenses within the past seven years; or any other crimes (not listed) against children in the past seven years. Furthermore, individuals found to have pending court cases for any disqualifying offenses will be disqualified. If the disposition of the pending case does not meet the criteria for disqualification as listed above, the individual would be cleared and reinstated. But how are crimes collected? Are these background checks effective to filter out people unfit to work with minors? Who performs these

background checks for NCVA? The answer is Southeast Security Consultants, Inc. SSCI’s motto is ‘Information is protection.’ Committed to finding the best methods for accurate and complete data, they also seek the cost of its absence. SSCI found in a 2016 case study by Randy Rodebaugh found other companies offer national database-only searches to screen applicants as a cost-cutter for volunteer-driven organizations. As a result, 23 of the 56 individuals disqualified by SCCI throughout the 2015-16 screening period would have slipped through the cracks using only a database search. Pending cases will not appear on a national database, another reason courthouse investigations are imperative. “We choose SSCI for their comprehensive background checks that include local and statewide search,” NCVA CEO Donna Donaghy said. “We feel it is imperative to use the best services out there as the first line of defense to minimize safety risks for our players and community.” Unfortunately, some offenders may not have a criminal record, breaching this defense; so it is the community’s responsibility to help ensure the safety of players. In addition to background checks, USA Volleyball’s SafeSport program is a collection of specific policies, training, supervision and grassroots feedback to help ensure the community identifies and reports abuse. SafeSport also helps coaches be self-aware to not commit misconduct, clearly defining standards for them to conduct themselves. SafeSport policies define sexual, physical and emotional misconduct; bullying, threats, harassment and hazing to provide a comprehensive picture of abuse, and how to identify as well as report it. USA Volleyball provides training on these issues. “It is important to be able to coach the game and recognize issues on the court, but it is equally important for coaches to address situations off the court,” Aftershock Volleyball Club Director Craig Hardesty said. “SafeSport training allows them to do that properly.” Additionally, the SafeSport Handbook has two proactive policies to reduce risk of abuse: The Social Media and Electronic Communications Policy and Travel Policy. If a club does not develop its own policy, these policies become their default. For example, the Communications Policy limits all electronic correspondence topics between adults and minors to team activities, and all content must be readily available to the public, ensuring transparency. Plus, minors must copy or include their parents in all electronic correspondence. This multifaceted approach ensures coaches and the community actively create an environment that deeply minimizes abuse and maintains professionalism. We owe our children a life free of violence; together, it is possible through active diligence. ✪ — Kim Lampi for NCVA Follow Us On Twitter & Instagram, Like Us On Facebook!

W
hat a difference a year makes. The idea of planning any kind of youth summer programming in April 2020 seemed preposterous. It wasn’t even youth sports that was on hold at the time. Most of California and much of the nation remained in a lockdown. The only professional or collegiate sports on TV were classic games. And the closest we came to a national sports event were the Sunday debuts of new episodes of the “The Last Dance” — ESPN’s documentary series focused on Michael Jordan and the 1998 Bulls. But national sports slowly came back, and now high school sports have as well. Youth sports have also followed, and a summer camp industry that lost billions of dollars in 2020, will attempt to get back on its feet. Slowly. There are still plenty of Northern California institutions and businesses that chosing to simply postpone bringing back camps until 2022. Those who have decided to start back up are having to consider a number of different factors that were never on their radar before. As the head men’s soccer coach at Saint Mary’s College and the Director of Coaching for Walnut Creek Surf Soccer Club, Adam Cooper has a unique view. After just recently getting approval from Saint Mary’s, he’s currently planning what his Gaels’ camps will look like while also assisting with WCSC’s planning as well. “It’s still about trying to plan the best you can, while still taking it day-by-day,” Cooper said. “California seems to be doing an OK job (with COVID cases), but there are other state’s that definitely aren’t.” Which for someone planning a college camp at an attractive program, could be an issue. “These high school kids are itching to get in front of college coaches, and I feel for them,” Cooper said. “And the college camp is definitely going to attract kids from other states? So how do we handle if that athlete is coming from a state that’s experiencing high cases?” Cooper and his colleagues at both Saint Mary’s and WCSC are also considering what a safe number of participants for a camp would be. Several other camps will undoubtedly operate at lower numbers this year — even though demand will likely be high. This isn’t the first time Cooper has been forced to plan on the fly. He was doing the same thing last fall with Walnut Creek Surf. When the club was forced to cancel its Recreation League season, it organized a series of weekly clinics that allowed the kids a chance to work on their games in 12-player pods. “Everybody was in masks, there was no contact,” Cooper said. “But it turned out to be super positive and gave kids a chance to get out of their houses.” In the Age of COVID and its abundance of caution, Cooper is well aware that he and his staff won’t get 100 percent buy-in on whatever camp protocols they adopt. But he says he’ll rest easy as long as the kids are able to enjoy or benefit from the experience. “Both the college and the club are simply trying to provide the best services we can,” Cooper said. “We just want to try and give these kids the best experience in what has otherwise been an extremely crummy year.” ✪

JACKSON PAVITT CARDINAL NEWMAN-SANTA ROSA ‘20/ CAL POLY-SAN LUIS OBISPO FOOTBALL Do you have a favorite camp or clinic memory? The QB Collective camp in Southern California. I gained the most knowledge at that camp that I have at any other camp by far, and had a great time competing/participating. What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? Focus less on going to a bunch of camps, but instead just working on my own craft and going to fewer camps. ... Instead of going to a bunch of singular college camps, go to two or three mega camps where there are many eyes in one place. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting? If camps are done in the right way, it allows you to slow down and focus on certain specific pieces of your skill set without all the additional distraction/action. What did the best camps you attended have in common? The best camps all gave me something to work on at home by the time I was leaving. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today? At QB Collective, the quarterbacks all learned a warm-up for arm care, and I use that same warmup before every time I throw the football now. If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have? The one thing I’d want to have at my camp is either have it be a free or low-cost camp, so it is more available to everyone. Many great players aren’t able to attend certain camps because of the expenses that come with it, and they should get that opportunity. players are welcome to attend this camp, where they will have the opportunity to participate in age and skill appropriate drills and scrimmages. PEYTON OMANIA DE LA SALLE-CONCORD ’18 | MICHIGAN ST. WRESTLING Do you have a favorite camp or clinic memory? My favorite camp and clinic is the Greco World Duals at the Concord Youth Center. We have 2-3 foreign teams come in for two weeks of training. I think it is really important to expose yourself to as much wrestling as possible if you want to be the best. On top of that several states will bring teams to wrestle. It’s a really fun competition and week of training. What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? To soak it all up. Everyone who is talking to you is talking to you for a reason. But don’t forget to have fun. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting? You get to see new things. Sometimes coaches and wrestlers do things different than you and your coach does. You might find some stuff you like more than your own. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today? It taught me to fight a lot harder, sometimes new training partners spark up some new energy.

TRE MARONIC BEAR RIVER-GRASS VALLEY ’20 | WESTERN ILLINOIS FOOTBALL Do you have a favorite camp or clinic memory? My favorite camp was definitely the University of Wyoming football camp. It was the best ran camp I have ever attended. What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? The biggest thing for me was that I always tried to get myself noticed at the camps by being the first one in the lines and first one in drills. Coaches loved to see who would step up first. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting? The biggest difference between a camp and a practice is that you get to perform and compete in front of coaches and kids you don’t see everyday. Being able to compete against other great players makes it a whole new ball game. What did the best camps you attended have in common? The best camps were the ones where the coaches actually interacted with the players. The coaches actually cared about teaching you the game. The best camps for me were the ones that were not in it for the money, but in it for the game and the players. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today? You never know who is watching, but someone always is. Work hard in everything you do at the camps because you never know if someone is watching you or not. If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have? I would start with a coaches introduction. So every player knew the coaches or who was helping, that way they would feel more comfortable asking questions. The camps that didn’t do this made it harder for me to go up to coaches to ask questions. When they did the introduction at the start, I felt more comfortable talking to them about the game. ALI BAMBERGER CARONDELET-CONCORD ’19 | SAINT MARY’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? I would go back and tell myself to pay more attention to the lectures. At excel camps, there used to always be a meaningful lecture, and to us campers it was a break from playing and the heat outside. Now that I am older, I have heard replays of the camp lectures, and wish I would’ve payed more attention. Coach Frank Allocco was one of the best coaches I’ve met, and I wish my middle school self would’ve payed more attention to his insight on the game of basketball and life. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a pratice setting? Since I am definitely a social person, I would have to say meeting new people. I got to meet new players and coaches throughout these camps. Everyday during these camps you were playing against new people: in games and every single competition. At practice, things can sometimes get monotonous, but at camps everyday was a new experience. What did the best camps you attended have in common? All the coaches had great, welcoming attitudes. Being a young girl (in a coed setting), these camps didn’t have as many girls as boys. The camps included the girls, and let us compete against the boys. This was definitely another one of my favorite things. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today? I think it would have to be, that basketball is fun. The game of basketball isn’t just as simple as putting the ball in the basket. It can be, learning new moves that you’ve never seen or tried before, and for me getting out of my comfort zone is something that made me great. Getting out of your comfort zone to learn new things, should be fun. It shouldn’t make you uneasy or worried. How else are you supposed to get better if you just constantly practice and do the same things? If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have? The first thing my camp would have, would be as many girls as possible. To me, growing the game of basketball for little girls is so important. Being able to compete with other little girls, is what’s going to make them fall in love with the game. When I was younger, being 1 of around 7 girls at a camp was intimidating. But being around more girls made me more comfortable. Camps aren’t always about purely becoming the best basketball player ever. They are about improving you as a player, but for some they are an exploration for if you truly like the sport or not. 14

DONNY FONTILLAS Ripon Wrestling ’18 What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? I would tell my younger self to enjoy every moment and enjoy the process because you will remember this as a time of improvement, but also an experience to remember. There’s just something about grinding with your brothers that makes you connect more and become closer. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting? In a camp setting, I was able to work on technical work. Positioning my body in the right angles so that I can use my max strength when wrestling and have the advantage over my opponent. In a practice setting, we work more on repetition and drilling so that moves can just flow in a match without a single thought. Both have made me into the wrestler I am today and I couldn’t be more grateful. What did the best camps you attended have in common? Every camp I have gone to has focused on the you getting better whether it’s as a person or a wrestler. Every aspect of yourself can improve and that’s what my instructors really emphasized. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today? That there are people that work just as hard as you, and in those camps you guys are working together. But when you get back, you realize you still have a lot of work to do. That’s what pushes you to keep working hard.

“I don’t think you should feel like you’re getting behind, or your child is getting behind, if they don’t specialize.” — DePaul University women’s soccer coach Erin Chastain

n today’s society, there is a strong cultural emphasis on elite status as a requirement for athletic success. Whether this status is gained through scholarships or professional participation, it goes consistently in hand with pressuring children towards single-sport training. Parents and coaches are looking to fulfill the 10,000 hour practice requirement perpetuated in the media; they are urged towards early-age, high-intensity training by the popularized triumphs of Tiger Woods and Andre Agassi. The consequence of such promotion is an increase in early sports specialization. “Four years ago, I was trying to find a basketball team for my daughter,” former collegiate All-American and NBA veteran Keith Van Horn wrote for his blog. “She tried out and made one of the top teams in the state (Colorado), but before we agreed to join the team, we had to agree to the coach’s conditions which were for the most part reasonable, except for one. We had to make a one-year commitment and only play for that team. “The coach stated we must focus only on basketball or my daughter will not become as good as she can be.” Early specialization in a single sport has increased tremendously in recent years. Young athletes are participating more in multiple, high-commitment teams of the same sport and pursuing extra training from specialists. While this intensified training might be expected to produce a higher caliber of athlete, in reality it can be mentally and physically damaging. The repetitive microtrauma of specialization leaves athletes vulnerable to overuse injury and burnout as well as can deter athletes from long-term participation in a sport. Alternatively, multi-sport participation has shown to build strong athletic foundations and increase chances of gaining elite status (whilst maintaining enjoyment) in one sport. “I think playing multiple sports can maybe help you in the sport that you’re the best at,” DePaul University women’s soccer coach Erin Chastain said in a video produced by the Positive Coaching Alliance. “You can have different roles on different sports teams.” It is critical for parents and coaches to promote a regimen of diverse athletic activity that accommodates a young athlete’s interests. When physioFollow Us On Twitter & Instagram, Like Us On Facebook!
logical and skeletal development are still occurring, the practice of repetitive movements will increase risk of injury. Additionally, serious athletic time commitments can be socially isolating and psychologically stunting. “In youth sports, more isn’t always better. Sometimes it’s just more,” Van Horn wrote, riffing off a quote by screenwriter Barbara Benedek. Young athletes should instead immerse themselves in a variety of sports to attain long-term success. “I don’t think you should feel like you’re getting behind, or your child is getting behind, if they don’t specialize,” Chastain said. “Sometimes that leads to burnout and it may lead to not recognizing that you’re going to be very good at another sport also.” A focus on comprehensive, physical skills rather than specifics, as well as avoidance of excessive time commitments, can prevent burnout and injury and create a healthier lifestyle for the athlete. Below are some key statistics around early sport specialization that were highlighted by Dr. Joe Donahue, a former physician for Stanford Athletics and the San Francisco 49ers. Donahue, a member of the Positive Coaching Alliance’s National Leadership Board, used a collection of 2019 reports from professionals Seth Cheatham, Mia Smucny and others. ›› Only one-half of one percent of high school athletes make it to the professional level. ›› Up to 54 percent of all injuries seen in pediatric sports medicine are related to overuse. ›› Young athletes who are highly specialized are 36 percent more likely to suffer a serious overuse injury than those who are not. ›› Focus on one sport can slow critical social development and lead to stunted psychosocial growth. ›› At one Division I university, 88 percent of the athletes had participated in two to three sports as children. Nearly 70 percent delayed sports specialization until the age of 12 or older. ›› As much as 97 percent of professional athletes believed being a multisport athlete was beneficial to their success. ✪

JOEY CAPRA PLACER-AUBURN ’19 | SAN DIEGO STATE FOOTBALL Do you have a favorite camp or clinic memory? My favorite clinic is Linemen Win Games coached by Jon Osterhout, head coach at American River College Football. He teaches offensive and defensive linemen agility, blocking techniques and pass protection techniques. Several great players have gone to the camp including Eddie Vanderdoes of the Oakland Raiders, and my two brothers of course. What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? Not to be anxious. Have fun and enjoy every minute of it. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting? A camp setting it completely different from normal practice because you’re learning alongside the guys you usually complete against. During that practice, we’re all in the same boat so we become allies instead of enemies. What did the best camps you attended have in common? The best camps are well organized and have plenty of coaching staff so the athletes get personal attention and learn more. If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have? I’d want my camp to have a diverse coaching staff. This gives the athletes many different looks, and the opportunity to learn from various programs.

MORGAN HESS HERITAGE-BRENTWOOD ’19 | IDAHO STATE SOFTBALL Do you have a favorite camp or clinic memory? My favorite memory is probably meeting athletes from all around the country. I really enjoyed playing with athletes from all around and competing with a wide range of girls. What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? Be louder and more outgoing during camps. College coaches love to see girls who hold a leadership role on the field, and I was pretty shy throughout my first few camps I attended. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting? A camp setting is different from a practice setting because you are surrounded by a completely new group of girls, coaches, players, etc. It’s a new environment that makes you have to come out of your shell and perform on the spot. What did the best camps you attended have in common? The best camps were the camps that were fast-paced and competitive. Some camps involve standing in a lot of lines and standing around, but the good camps were always constantly going and busy. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today? Stand out and be a leader. Be noticed! There’s are so many girls who play softball and who are striving to play college softball. Standing out makes it easier for colleges to notice you. If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have? The first thing I’d want my camp to have is many instructors for the athletes attending, so they could ask for help and advice.

LUCAS COOK LINCOLN ’20 | CAL POLY-SAN LUIS OBISPO WRESTLING Do you have a favorite camp or clinic memory? My favorite camp is the FCA Christian camp at UCLA. I found some great people I can call family and strengthened my faith there. What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? I wish I could have talked to my younger self to be more productive and go get it and not wait. Wish I could have started the grind a lot earlier. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting? What you can gain from a camp is perspective. In the wrestling room at a normal practice you’re used to the flow and the environment and the family around you. At a camp, you’re adapting to a new environment and energy, and overall you want to strive harder to prove yourself. What did the best camps you attended have in common? The best camps I attended all were infectious in the way that everyone around you was good and grinding. It fed off of everyone and each other. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today? FCA camp on faith. How to be a humble beast. If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have? I’d want my camp to have sessions off the mat to discuss life, faith and issues. Wrestlers have a life, too. As a camp director I know that and would want the kids to have something to remember off and on the mat.

CHASE SALDATE GILROY ’20 | MICHIGAN ST. WRESTLING Do you have a favorite camp or clinic memory? Dorming with my best friends always makes memories. What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? I would say to pay attention more. I was more about fun and less about paying attention. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting? Bonding more with your team. You are with them for multiple days not just two hours a day. This just brings the team closer. What did the best camps you attended have in common? They all were overnight, and although serious, they still had games in some of the sessions. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today? Definitely to keep your dorm clean and to be responsible with time. No one is there to make you go to a session. Today I keep my room more organized and show up to practice on time. If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have? I would say a great cafeteria. Wrestlers love their food — so having good food is definitely important.

NOAH BLAKE DEL ORO-LOOMIS ’20 | AIR FORCE WRESTLING Do you have a favorite camp or clinic memory? My favorite camp memory is when I was in Illinois and Coah Powell (one of Oak Park’s coaches) told me to wrestle Chris Dardanes, Izaya White, and one other junior in a four-mat rotation when I was a incoming freshman. It was a huge honor and a really fun experience. What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? The only thing that I would possibly change is that I wish I branched out a little more to meet more people. Because the other kids that attend camps are likely a lot like-minded to me. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a pratice setting? The camp setting let’s me learn from new people with new perspectives that I might not get from my coach. It also lets me branch out and network with other coaches and wrestlers that I wouldn’t have met otherwise. What did the best camps you attended have in common? The best camps I attended had instructors that really love the sport of wrestling. And kids that are there to learn, not screw around. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today? To be comfortable with failure in the practice room, and to not hold back just because I’m wrestling someone new. Another very helpful thing I learned from Ryan Loder at camp was how to approach all aspects in my life with the correct mindset, and how to prepare myself accordingly. If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have? Good well-known technicians so that more kids will show up, and they will learn high-level technique. If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have? To hire the best available high school & colleges coaches along with quality facilities.

Over the years we’ve asked various coaches and camp directors what they feel the most important things athletes and parents should look for when choosing a camp. This year, it’s our humble suggestion that No. 1 on your list should be finding out the camp’s COVID protocols and procedures. After that, check out what some of the experts think.
... When considering a baseball camp ›› 1. Instruction: It’s important to ensure that your child will learn proper fundamentals and technique that is age appropriate. ›› 2. Fun element: Having fun is a must to get players active and excited to continue playing. ›› 3. Accessibility: If you have to drive far, make sure the camp is stellar and fits with your needs for baseball instruction. ›› 4. Coaching staff: Qualified coaches who have experience, the ability to interact with players in a positive manner and communicate concepts to the age group being instructed. ›› 5. Games: Playing games is an important element as it provides a safe environment to try out the new skills they have learned without fear of losing a game. 30

... When considering a pitching camp ›› 1. Arm Care, Throwing and Mechanics: You cannot play without an arm. You cannot play at the next level without a strong arm. Do they provide accurate information and education on the biomechanics of throwing? What methods are they using? Video analysis, strength training programs, long toss programs? You do not want to leave the camp with an injury from inadequate coaching or arm care. ›› 2. Ratio of Coaches to Players: Are there a lot of athletes and few coaches? Has the camp invested in its staff making athletic development priority, or will you have limited time with coaches? Individual coaching is how you improve the most. ›› 3. Quality of Coaches: You want to be surrounded with baseball minds that have firsthand and successful track records in the sport. Are they knowledgeable about the game and have a history of developed & successful players? This is key ›› 4. Past Camp Participants: Research and see where former camp attendees have gone to play and how the camp has developed them. Do they have any MLB players or elite amateurs that have attended the camp? ›› 5. Attendance of Coaches and Scouts: The larger the attendance by scouts and coaches the better chance you have to impress. It only takes one scout or coach to get you to that next level.
... When considering a volleyball camp ›› 1. Serving: Becoming an efficient server is critical. ›› 2. Passing: This and serving are the two most important skills. ›› 3. Movement: Footwork, hand-eye coordination and reading the ball are all key. ›› 4. Attacking: Hitting and spiking, which is the most fun thing to do. ›› 5. Chemistry: There has to be team bonding.

... When considering a basketball camp
... When considering to begin diving
›› 1. Fundamentals: Boring? Maybe, but everyone (and I mean everyone) can improve their fundamentals.
It may be advantageous to have some background in gymnastics, martial arts or dance, but anybody can begin diving. Each diver is taught based on their skill level and comfort level. Key ingredients which make a successful diver include strength, grace and courage.
›› 2. Coach-to-player ratio: The fewer players per coach, the better. Any time there’s more than ten players per coach, it’s not a good situation. ›› 3. Adult coach-to-player coach ratio: Many camps rely on high schoolers for instruction, and though they may be good players, they’re not necessarily good teachers. ›› 4. No more than 3 hours a day: No one, not even coaches can concentrate for more than three hours, much less teenagers and below. After two hours really, it’s day care. ›› 5. Plenty of room: The more crowded it is, the noisier it is, and the harder it is to teach and learn.
›› 1. The thrill of jumping and diving into water from heights ranging from 3 to 10 feet — and up to 30 feet if you’re on the diving team. ›› 2. Learning how to properly take off a springboard, both forwards and backwards. Part of this is entering the water head first in a ‘hollow’ position, and what you’re supposed to do underwater after each dive. ›› 3. Using a trampoline to work on fundamental skills that are part of diving, and to prepare you for learning new dives. ›› 4. Using a ‘Bubbleator’ (or ‘Sparging System’), which provides a huge mound of bubbles in front of the diving board, for learning new dives — just in case you happen to land awkwardly on the surface of the pool. ›› 5. Learning to be aware of your body in space (i.e. your proprio-ceptive sense).
