FIELD NOTES ON SPORTS CAMPS
School is almost out for the summer, so grab your gear as we embark on a journey filled with sweat, grit, camaraderie and a whole lot of fun. Join us in this issue of SportStars as we explore the benefits that define the sports camp experience.
Sports camp is a great way for athletes to focus on training and skill development. Our article about Key Factors to Consider When Choosing A Sports Camp will help athletes make camp decisions based on their skill level and other details like staffing and cost. If an athlete decides on a specialized sports camp, our article about what to expect will prepare them as we outline a typical schedule from orientation to last-day tournaments or showcases.
All that free time in the summer months means having time to dedicate to mastering skill sets and working on agility, flexibility, endurance and stamina. All the training will pay off when fall sports resume as athletes will be able
to stand out with their physicality and conditioning. When I look back on my time as a shy kid who ran track, attending a sports camp would’ve helped me connect and bond with peers who shared a love in my event of choice, racewalking. It would’ve also meant access to training tips and coaching from experts that could’ve helped shave seconds off my 200m time. All of which would have helped me build the confidence to keep competing. But there is so much more that sports camps offer beyond making friends and progressing in sports skills. Our article Beyond The Field: Life Lessons Learned At Sports Camp reveals all the insights that will help shape you both as an athlete and as a person.
Whether you’re a seasoned athlete, or just dipping your toes into the game, this edition is for anyone with a passion and dedication to being their best on and off the field — even during summer vacation. Let the games begin! ✪
Whether you’re throwing touchdowns, dunking basketballs or hitting home runs, every sport needs one vital piece, an unsung hero, the referee. Today, there is a major problem in high school and youth sports, the steady shortage of officials. This issue translates through every major sport in all 50 states. It’s believed the shortage was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, the roots of this growing issue began before, with officials citing the worsening of sportsmanship and acquiring new officials to take the mantle.
The issue begins off the court. According to the NASO officials survey, conducted in 2023, 50% of officials who completed the survey have felt unsafe and feared for their safety because of spectators, coaches, and players’ behavior. Organizations have taken it upon themselves to establish additional preventative measures by increasing fines and readjusting atendees’ codes of behavior to implement rigid penalties (suspension, expulsion, etc.). United States Volleyball (USAV) for example, has recently implemented the HIROS (Harassment Incident Response – Officials & Staff) initiative. HIROS was created to deal with harassment in real-time, allowing officials and staff to report, and the appropriate parties to respond with an investigation and issue consequences in a short period of time. Creating a safer work environment for officials is the first step in resolving the crisis, however, recruitment is another hurdle sports organizations must overcome. In the same NASO Officials Survey, it was disclosed that the average age of the official survey is 57.11 years old, about 7 years until the current USA retirement age. While many people take up officiating as a hobby during retirement, sports organizations must focus on the recruitment of young people to get on the stand. College students are one group of young people being recruited by some youth sports organizations, which makes sense when 81% of all college students work part-time and have a flexible schedule. The Northern California Volleyball Association (NCVA) is prioritizing the recruitment of officials for the upcoming 2024/2025 season and is utilizing the many universities in the area to generate interest among young people. They offer a flexible work schedule, great pay, and the opportunity for travel. The NCVA is under the USAV umbrella, so officials registered with the NCVA can officiate at any USAV qualifier across the country.
Opportunities such as these will become more abundant, and so will initiatives to support officials. While they may take a few years to take hold, spectators, coaches, players, and anyone who atends sporting events can start making a change now. Never forget to thank your official, and next time a call doesn’t go your way, remember to express compassion, and empathy for the men and women on the stand. ✪

Life Lessons Learned At Sports Camps
Sports camps are the place to be for athletes who are looking to amp up their game. Along with increasing skill sets, these camps also provide other important lessons that go beyond the field and can be applied to various aspects of life.
Attending a sports camp is a great way to connect with other people with a shared interest in that sport. It also means being able to work with coaches and mentors who can help further develop athletic techniques. Sports camps are a great way to stay in shape and increase strength and stamina.
However, athletes know that being active in sports means there are many lessons to be learned on and off the field.
Here are some of the life lessons athletes may learn at sports camps.
Life Lesson #1 : Setting Goals Is Gold
Athletes go into sports camp with a goal. And this can be anything from as small as trying a new sport to as big as mastering a certain play or getting that race PR.
One of the biggest life lessons learned at sports camp is the importance of goal setting and the discipline needed to achieve goals. This bleeds into every area of life such was in school, when applying for colleges and landing or climbing up the ladder at a dream job.
Sports camp can help athletes learn that setting small term goals are the baby steps and small wins that keep us on the path to success when reaching larger goals.
Life Lesson #2: Hard Work = Rewards
In life, nothing is handed to us. That means putting in the hard work to get the rewards. At sports camp workouts, practices, scrimmages, games, tournaments happen daily. This means lots of physical work, especially for those unconditioned or just starting in the sport.
But all good things come to those who work for it. It won’t come easy, but many might find the process of physical and mental strength gained is worth the consistent effort.
Life Lesson #3: The Power Of Teamwork And Community
In general, sports are a great way to be a part of a community. On a team, every person plays their role. Teammates need to work together to succeed. This can be applied to other areas of life such as when needing to work on a group project in school or pitching in among family.
At sports camp, athletes will work with others in workouts, games, challenges, and during fun activities. Athletes can also learn when to be a leader or captain or when to play a supporting role to complete a task. Learning when to ask for help, knowing when to rely on others, and standing up for others are all important life lessons.
Life Lesson #4: How To Work With Others
Being part of a team environment can be very uplifting. However, not everyone gets along all t`he time. Being in a group setting like a sports camp teaches athletes how to work through power dynamics and diverse personalities. This will help them be able to navigate school and later workplaces where people differ on ideas. This is also a great way to learning conflict solving skills.
Life Lesson #5: Independence
Going to sports camps means being away from home. While some camps might be local and run for a few hours each day, others might be sleep away camps that can run at least a week or more. This means the athlete must be independent to be able to take care of themselves. This might include packing necessarily equipment and taking proper care of it while at camp, or even setting a bedtime routine that will ensure enough sleep before a long day of workouts.
It can be nerve-racking to be away from family and friends, but learning independence is important for being able to dorm at college or be on one’s own later on in life.
Life Lesson #6: Be Organized
In order to grow in the sport, time must be dedicated to working on skills and basic techniques. But with other activities planned at camp it might be hard to manage time effetely. This is where good time management skills come in.
It’s important to be organized in all areas of life—not just with physical things. This includes time. This is a value life skill to have that will help make camp days run smoothly as well when practicing in post-camp life.
Life Lesson #7: How To Be Tough
With back-to-back workouts, learning proper nutrition and hydrations, bonding with teammates, and being educated on injury prevention, camp days are jammed packed. Being att a sports camp teaches mental skills such as how to focus during the sports season, mental resilience to get through practices when tired, and other mental skills training. More than working on the body, sports camp helps to work on the mind. This makes athletes tough and strong enough to face any obstacles in their way beyond the field. ✪

What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp? I would go back and tell myself to pay more attention to the lectures. At excel camps, there used to always be a meaningful lecture, and to us campers it was a break from playing and the heat outside. Now that I am older, I have heard replays of the camp lectures, and wish I would’ve payed more attention. Coach Frank Allocco was one of the best coaches I’ve met, and I wish my middle school self would’ve payed more attention to his insight on the game of basketball and life. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting?
Since I am definitely a social person, I would have to say meeting new people. I got to meet new players and coaches throughout these camps. Everyday during these camps you were playing against new people: in games and every single competition. At practice, things can sometimes get monotonous, but at camps everyday was a new experience. What did the best camps you attended have in common?
All the coaches had great, welcoming attitudes. Being a young girl (in a coed setting), these camps didn’t have as many girls as boys. The camps included the girls, and let us compete against the boys. This was definitely another one of my favorite things. What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today?
I think it would have to be, that basketball is fun. The game of basketball isn’t just as simple as putting the ball in the basket. It can be, learning new moves that you’ve never seen or tried before, and for me getting out of my comfort zone is something that made me great. Getting out of your comfort zone to learn new things, should be fun. It shouldn’t make you uneasy or worried. How else are you supposed to get better if you just constantly practice and do the same things?
If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have?
The first thing my camp would have, would be as many girls as possible. To me, growing the game of basketball for little girls is so important. Being able to compete with other little girls, is what’s going to make them fall in love with the game. When I was younger, being 1 of around 7 girls at a camp was intimidating. But being around more girls made me more comfortable. Camps aren’t always about purely becoming the best basketball player ever. They are about improving you as a player, but for some they are an exploration for if you truly like the sport or not.

What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp?
Just to play your game. And especially when in front of bigger crowds or scouts, the more you try to do, the worse it goes. When the moment is big, you often try to do something out of nature and things you can’t do. The more you stay within yourself is when you see the most success.
What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting?
In a camp setting, you definitely feel the atmosphere and
the crowd that you wouldn’t feel in a normal practice setting. Also, there is pressure when out at a camp. That’s something you can deal with on your own, going back to my answer about what I’d have told my younger self: The more you put on yourself to perform, the worse it goes. What did the best camps you attended have in common?
The best camps I attended were the ones that were most organized and led to the most reps. What set these camps apart from others — and made them the best experience for myself as a player — was they allowed each player to really showcase what they were good at throughout the stay at the camp. Even if the player didn’t have a good performance. Also, those camps were the
most hands-on with players. Instructors were not only with you the whole time, but talked with you about the game (the good and the bad).
What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you still apply today? Although it’s hard to do, each game, each camp and each practice should all be the same in your mind.
If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have?
The first thing I would aim for is to let the players be themselves and create the most game-like situations. Sometimes they are going to screw up, and other times succeed, it’s what makes baseball so unique. ✪

Do you have a favorite camp or clinic memory?
The QB Collective camp in Southern California. I gained the most knowledge at that camp that I have at any other camp by far, and had a great time competing/participating.
What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp?
Focus less on going to a bunch of camps, but instead just working on my own craft and going to fewer camps. ... Instead of going to a bunch of singular college camps, go to two or three mega camps where there are many eyes in one place.
What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting?
If camps are done in the right way, it allows you to slow down and focus on certain specific pieces of your skill set without all the additional distraction/action.
What did the best camps you attended have in common?
The best camps all gave me something to work on at home by the time I was leaving.
What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today?
At QB Collective, the quarterbacks all learned a warm-up for arm care, and I use that same warmup before every time I throw the football now.
If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have?
The one thing I’d want to have at my camp is either have it be a free or low-cost camp, so it is more available to everyone. Many great players aren’t able to attend certain camps because of the expenses that come with it, and they should get that opportunity.

BEAR RIVER-GRASS VALLEY ’20 | WESTERN ILLINOIS FOOTBALL
Do you have a favorite camp or clinic memory?
My favorite camp was definitely the University of Wyoming football camp. It was the best ran camp I have ever attended.
What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp?
The biggest thing for me was that I always tried to get myself noticed at the camps by being the first one in the lines and first one in drills. Coaches loved to see who would step up first.
What did you gain from a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting?
The biggest difference between a camp and a practice is that you get to perform and compete in front of coaches and kids you don’t see everyday. Being able to compete against other great players makes it a whole new ball game.
What did the best camps you attended have in common?
The best camps were the ones where the coaches actually interacted with the players. The coaches actually cared about teaching you the game. The best camps for me were the ones that were not in it for the money, but in it for the game and the players.
What’s one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you apply today?
You never know who is watching, but someone always is. Work hard in everything you do at the camps because you never know if someone is watching you or not.
If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have?
I would start with a coaches introduction. So every player knew the coaches or who was helping, that way they would feel more comfortable asking questions. The camps that didn’t do this made it harder for me to go up to coaches to ask questions. When they did the introduction at the start, I felt more comfortable talking to them about the game.

What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp?
To treat camps more like games. My preparation for a few of the camps I attended over the years was lackluster. What did you gain from a camp setting that you may
not have gained in a practice setting?
A chance to go against different playing styles. It gave me good game prep. In practice everyone is taught the same technique, and to do the same thing, so it’s good to see something different in a non-game setting. What did the best camps you attended have in common?
The best camps I went to were definitely the smaller ones with maybe a couple different schools in attendance.
The ones that come to mind college-wise were UC Davis and Cal. The Under Armour All-American camp down in Los Angeles was also really cool as well. I would say the smaller, the better, though.
If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have?
Knowledgeable coaches for sure. Also, a limit on how many kids can attend. ✪
what to expect at SPECIALIZED
SPECIALIZED CAMPS
At a specialized sports camps, athletes can take their game to new heights. At these camps, athletes join together to embark on a unique journey. This includes skill refinement, camaraderie, and athletic growth. When choosing a specialized sports camp athletes will work on technical skills related to that sport.
But what can an athlete expect once they are at specialized sports camps?
Individualized Skill Progression
Expert coaches or industry professionals lead specialized sports camps. They provide guidance and training to help campers advance to the next level. Training sessions are tailored to the skill level of each athlete, ensuring that they can progress at their own pace. The personalized attention that campers receive is a major bonus. This allows them to fine-tune their skills and achieve athletic development in their sport.
First Day: Orientation And Assessment
With all the necessary research, registration, and packing complete, it’s time to hit the ground running. The first day of camp is filled with opportunities to get oriented with the facility, coaches, and other athletes. Athletes can expect to undergo a skill assessment early on in the camp to determine strengths and weaknesses.
Training and Workouts
With the guidance of expert coaching, the meat of the camp is the athletic training and workouts. Training sessions may involve practice drills, plays, and
conditioning exercises to improve strength, stamina, and agility. The coaches provide targeted instructions to address areas of improvement.
Team Building
While personal growth is important, team building is also essential for any sports team. Engaging in group activities such as games, scrimmages, or challenges can not only help improve communication and cooperation among team members but also foster strong bonds and friendships that last beyond the sports season.
Workshops
The camp may also have classroom sessions including video analysis and other workshops or seminars on topics like sports nutrition, injury prevention, mental strategy, and sports psychology. Athletes need to be informed about proper hydration and fuel to keep the body healthy. This aids in injury prevention and recovery. It’s also important to have a positive mindset and address how to overcome pre-game jitters, handle loss, and visualize victory.
Events and Competitions
Athletes can also expect competitions, formal games, or tournaments to showcase skills. This is a great way to put the skills learned to the test. These are held throughout the specialized sports camp schedule or at the conclusion of the camp. After leaving specialized sports camps, athletes should feel ready to take their game to the next level. ✪

What did the best camps you attended have in common?
Organization, high level talent, great coaching, less campers — and a fast pace
What’s the one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you still apply
My camp experiences reinforced to play with joy and embrace every opportunity. I also learned a specific glove technique on forehand short hops and picks from Coach Kate Drohan at the Northwestern camp in Colorado last summer.
If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have?
A lot of stations to get lots of good reps and good looks. Small manageable group of players to get more focused time with coaches/instructors. I don’t like standing around. ✪
5 5 Key Factors to Consider When Choosing a Sports Camp
AKey Factors to Consider When Choosing a Sports Camp
ttending a sports camp is a great way for an athlete to develop and improve their skills in their chosen sport. Providing a fun and immersive experience, athletes can connect and form bonds with others who share their same interests while tapping into the minds of expert coaches and specialized training that an athlete can’t get in a local club or team setting.
The camp can provide a safe environment where athletes can concentrate on their passion to progress in the sport. And while this can help give them that competitive edge, sports camp may be an experience bigger than the sport itself. Lessons both in the sport and off the field help shape not only them as an athlete, but also as a person.
Set up for success using these tips and key considerations to keep in mind when choosing a sports camp.
Programming And Skill Level
When choosing a sports camp, it’s vital to consider the type of camp that best suits the athlete’s needs. Specific sports camps, such as basketball, soccer, or swimming, focus on improving related skills and are led by experienced coaches in that sport. This type of camp is ideal for serious athletes who want to enhance their performance.
Multi-sport camps are another option for those who want to explore multiple sports and improve basic skills and overall fitness. These camps offer a range of activities, including volleyball, track and field, martial arts, soccer, etc., with different sports available at different times of the day.
No matter what type of sports camp is chosen, make sure that the athlete is of the appropriate skill level. Sports camps range from beginners to more advanced programming.
Coaching And Staff
Behind every great athlete is a great coach who helped them reach their goals. This is why coaches, instructors, and other staff members play a key role in deciding on a sports camp.
Coaches may include those who are passionate about fitness or sports in
general or those who specialize in a specific sport or a specific position or event in that sport.
As important as the coach’s expertise is the ratio between camp goers and coaching and staff. Consider this when deciding on if individualized attention and instruction and important.
Facility and Safety
Read reviews and recommendations to assess the camp’s reputation, facilities, instruction, safety, and overall experience by reading reviews and recommendations from others.
Ensure that the staff is CPR and first aid certified and that there is an AED on-premise, along with well-defined emergency procedures and safety measures.
Look for a well-maintained facility, high-quality fields, courts, accommodations, and equipment that are fully stocked and equipped to meet the needs of all campers.
Cost And Value
The cost of the sports camp plays a major role in attending. Think about if the value of the camp experience and level of expertise is worth the cost. Make sure to inquire about hidden or additional costs, or if athletes are required to bring their equipment.
Post Camp Development And Opportunity
It is important to consider the personal goals of the athlete and what they hope to gain from attending the sports camp. Will the camp help them continue to develop their skills? Are there any available opportunities for the athlete to grow in their sports? It is also a good idea to ask if there are any specific tournaments, showcases, or recruiting events that the athlete can participate in. Will they have access to scouts, college coaches, or recruiters? Opportunities may also include the option for the athlete to have a leadership role within the camp and to attend future activities or events. ✪

ISAIAH & ELIJAH CORTEZ
Gilroy Wrestling • Juniors
Do you have a favorite camp or clinic memory?
ELIJAH: My favorite camp memory was when we got to play Sharks & Minnows with Kyle Dake (four-time World Champion, four-time NCAA champion and 2022 Olympic Bronze Medalist) at the Gilroy camp. What would you tell your younger self so that you could get more out of a camp?
ISAIAH: Write down what you learned at the camp. That way you can incorporate in into your style of wrestling after you leave. What did you gain for a camp setting that you may not have gained in a practice setting?
ELIJAH: A camp offers the ability to test moves on kids who are outside of your normal practice partners. What did the best camps you attended have in common?
ISAIAH: They focused on little details in keen positions
that make a difference in the match.
What’s the one thing you learned at a camp or clinic that has stayed with you, and that you still apply today?
ISAIAH: Plan long warm-ups so you don’t injure yourself during practice.
If you were a camp director for your sport, what’s the first thing you’d want your camp to have?
ELIJAH: An organized schedule with high-level technicians and good in-between-time food. ✪
