I Registered Early Childhood Educator (RECE) who has been working in the field for about 4 years now

as well as a RECE- Special Needs Assistant. As an RECE who works with children with Special Needs

’ s nothing more in this world that I wish to accomplish and help in these children. I believe that these

children deserve a chance to find job after graduating from a secondary education and through my

Future Leaders Project, I am able to provide resources and mentorship to help these children with job

processing interviews and land their future careers. I have a licence non-profit organization called, “The

Shirley Foundation, ” which is named after my grandmother who always taught me to give bac to those

in need. The Shirley Foundation seeks out various opportunities to bring my community together through

donation drives to collect resources for numerous organizations such as Hospitals, Homeless Shelters,

Nursing Homes, Food banks and Animals Shelters. At a young age I was diagnosed with an anxiety

disorder when leaving high school.

Not knowing the unknown had me very worried for my future. I knew that I wanted to work in the field

with children but did not know which career would be the best for me. I completed a year of Child and

Youth Care which in my opinion was not the correct match for me. This career choice taught us students

to keep our emotions at work and not bring it home with us. Child and Youth Care is a very

overwhelming field where you are going to deal with a lot of children that has been through a lot of

traumas. A year later I finally decided to switch my field and enter Eary Childhood Education which to

my surprised gave me this weight off my shoulder. Not only that but I had a guidance counsellor when I

was in college, I was skeptical at first because I honestly did not believe that I needed a counsellor but

after my first session, I felt better then before. I felt like I could do anything and made me realized what

my fear was and how I can handle it as a person. Dealing with my anxiety disorder took a toll on me

for about a year. I was offered medication but seeing my cousin who also had anxiety when in university

made her realized that she would depend on them when an attack would happen. For me personally, I

did not want my entire life to depend on a pill where as I can rebuild myself and get to know me again.

For over a year I started to find many ways to deal with my anxiety. Some days were worst but other

days were progress. Some ways that helped me with my anxiety would be talking with someone and

accepting the fact that this will be a long-term project. Another way I found a way to cope with my

anxiety was to focus on one thing, for example; sewing gave me a lot of peace, readjusting clothes or

recreating new clothing supports with my apprehension. Over time my anxiety became smaller and the

new me was becoming bigger. Now it has been 5 years since I was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder,

I still get anxiety attacks but not as much as before. My motivation in life are my organizations. My non-

profit organization, “The Shirley Foundation ” which is named after my grandmother who has always

taught to gives back to those in need. I also have a project called “Future Leader ” which is a project to

help children with special needs to land their dream job after gradating from post secondary school. On

top of that I am the Director of External Relations for a Network called “Guyanese Canadian Network.

Getting involved in my community keeps me motivated and busy. I am the type of person that if they

stop doing something for one day, I would not go back to it unless I push/motivate myself. I am a busy

person in general and there are time when I want to take a break but when I do, it will take a while to

go back to what I was originally doing. I feel grateful for the love and support for my friends and family.

I first decided being in beauty pageants to help with my self confidence. I have been struggling with

my self confidence for a while now and I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and participate in

something that would encourage me to face my fears. It was also a decision that I made to improve on

my public speaking. I know for a fact that speaking in front of so many people is one of my weaknesses

and I wanted to improve on this skill of mine that I am lacking on. My first ever pageant was Miss

West Indian Canadian. It was a pageant for Caribbean girls. This was the opportunity for me to step

out of my comfort zone and meet other new people. When I first heard about this pageant, I thought

that this was an amazing idea to bring girls in the Caribbean together and build friendships and create

bonds. This pageant has taught me a lot. It taught me that there will always be haters in the audience

and will call you out when you mess up. There will be that one person where every thing is handed

towards them. And there will be fake people behind the scene that will act like they want to be their

friend. What I learned from this pageant is that do not take anything personal and stay true to who

you are as a person. There will be people out there that will try to tear you down and shatter your

confidence but you have to remember that you are a strong individual female that has a purpose in

’ s society. After having some bit of experience of my first pageant, I decided to push myself

further, which was where I applied for Miss World Cananda (provincials). Entering this pageant gave

me a lot of confidence to continue this journey of mine. This pageant taught me even more when

competing in my a very competitive competition. You always need to be ready, always be on time, even

when you are not doing something they are ALWAYS watching you and be confident in your even

move. Another thing that I learned is to never compare yourself to other girls in the competition because

it will be a distraction and will tear down part of yourself confidence. Moving forward, I am determined

to keep going on my pageant journey, and I will succeed on my goal to become an advocate to many

young kids, teens and adult who have special needs to over come their fear of their future. When I

decided to take my first steps in modelling, I was not expecting myself to become so busy with many

photographers reaching out. When I did my first photoshoot, it was after I finished completing Miss

West Indian Canadian. Which for me I was very excited because who doesn ’t want to dress up and

take photos? I was also nervous because I did not know the first thing about modelling. I was not the

modelling type or had the “face ” for it. Back then when you thought of the word “ model” there was only

one thing everyone would think of, “ skinny, ” “tall” and etc. But now in today ’ s society, people in the

modelling industry can look like however they want to look like. Which gives other people especially

women to see others showing off flaws that other women would not dream of doing in front of millions

of people. It provides them self esteem and self confidence. Which is what modelling has done for me, it

helped me grow a part of me that I never knew I had as a person. The growth of my self confidence

has gotten to a point where I feel comfortable in my own body to where I was a couple years ago

when I used to compare myself to other girls on social media. getting into modelling allow me to try

new things and explore different themes of photoshoots as well as getting to know different
