Credit union setting a new foundation on Delaware Avenue

By ALI HIBBS hibbsa@spotlightnews.com DELMAR — The new Sunmark Federal Credit Union branch set to open on Delaware Avenue in Delmar will offer 24-hour services unmatched by most financial institutions in the Capital District, according to Sunmark CEO Frank DeGraw. The new branch will offer ITMs—”We call them MyTMs,” said DeGraw-—that features significantly more functionality than traditional ATMs and will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The machines, already in use at the

Rotterdam and Broadway, Schenectady branches, can be used by members and non-members. Sunmark was established in 1937 by GE as Schenectady G.E. Turbine Department’s Federal Credit Union #1884. As a credit union, it is different than a traditional bank in that it is a non-profit institution that passes profits on to its members. But, according to DeGraw, Sunmark’s most important defining characteristic is its employees. “It’s pretty evident from the feedback we get from our membership,” he said. “Even though we have a lot of similar products

and services, it’s all about the experience the person has when they’re doing business with us that counts.” DeGraw cited a recent employee meeting, during which employees were asked to stand if they had contributed time, resources or money to any one of the charities supported by the Sunmark Foundation (Albany Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House and Capital Roots among them). “Every single person stood up,” he said with pride. “One hundred percent of our employees, even the newest ones, had gotten involved in some way.

somewhere close to their job and home where they can just walk in and talk to somebody.” Sunmark now has nine branches in six counties, and plans to continue opening branches—with smaller physical footprints than a traditional branch building and ITM machines—to accommodate current and potential members.

DeGraw, who has been with the institution since before it rebranded, said that the business philosophy has remained unchanged. “We didn’t change our philosophy of people helping people, which is the credit union philosophy,” he said. “We just made our services available to a broader spectrum of

people.” The Delmar branch will be 2000 square feet, with a gabled exterior design and two drive through lanes, equipped with the new ITM machines. Inside, the building will be staffed by a manager, two consultants, and two “concierge” positions to help members who may need assistance with one of the four interior ITM machines.

Sunmark Federal Credit Union offers several ways for personal banking, including interior “ITM” machines — which provide more options than your traditional ATM machine.

very spring, Dr. Mark Friedman and associates of Albany Podiatry see an uptick in patient complaints of foot and ankle pain. Warmer weather brings increased activity levels, and what was once mild discomfort can become more severe. To make matters worse, many people avoid seeking medical treatment because of the associated recovery time. However, through advanced technology, numerous conditions can be addressed without downtime. Albany Podiatry offers Shockwave Therapy, a highly effective, non-

invasive treatment option to eliminate pain and restore full mobility. Shockwave Therapy has proven to be just as successful as surgery, but without the risks, complications, or lengthy recovery time. Patients are treated in-office, can bear weight immediately, and return to normal activity within a few days.

What conditions can be treated?

Spotlight How does Shockwave Therapy work?

Shockwave Therapy uses pressure waves to stimulate the metabolism, enhance blood circulation, and accelerate the healing process. Damaged tissue gradually regenerates and eventually heals.

Is it covered by medical On insurance?

Shockwave Therapy is covered by select insurance plans. For those patients whose insurance does not cover Shockwave Therapy, patients may submit paid receipts to their health savings accounts (HSA) for consideration. Fortunately, Shockwave Therapy is very affordable.

Is it safe?

Yes. This FDA-cleared technology was developed in Europe in the 1960s and is currently used around the globe. Shockwave Therapy can be found in every medical discipline and is frequently used to treat professional athletes.

How many visits are required? The doctor performs

a complete foot/ankle examination to determine if the patient is a candidate for Shockwave Therapy. (This initial exam is typically covered by medical insurance.) Each treatment plan is based on the individual’s condition. A typical course of treatment is 3-5 sessions; approximately 10-20 minutes each, depending on the condition being treated. Albany Podiatry is located at 6 Executive

Park Drive, just behind Stuyvesant Plaza. Drs. Friedman, Hardy, and Mason specialize in comprehensive podiatric care, including stubborn conditions that have previously proven difficult to manage, such as Achilles tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, and diabetic foot care. t was out of deep love and dedication to sharing yoga with the community that inspired Radiance Hot Yoga owners Leah Johnson and Boaz Alperson to open their stateof-the-art studio in Glenmont. Both approached their first hot yoga class with a different mindset: Boaz figured he was in good shape so that class would be easy, and Leah worried that she wasn’t flexible enough it. Regardless of their first approach, both found yoga filled a part of their lives they hadn’t expected. In each class, they built on balance and strength that was beneficial not only in postures, but in their daily lives, culling patience and willpower from their regular practice. Leah, an avid runner, found yoga challenged her athleticism, exposing new areas for growth. Though she considered herself strong prior to her first class, each class built strength and flexibility

throughout her body, which improved her fitness overall. She found that yoga practice was not just beneficial to natural athletes, and wanted to share how anyone could get something out of class. “When I started,” she said, “I could barely touch my fingertips to the floor, but now I can put my palms on the floor with straight legs. Every time I practice, I make progress, and so do our practitioners. Our message at Radiance is that yoga is for everyone. We all start somewhere and grow!” Leah teaches Hot HIIT, Bikram, and Barkan yoga in both Latham and Glenmont. Boaz teaches Barkan, Bikram, and a new class, Intro to Hatha Yoga, in Glenmont. DELMAR — “Building an oral health home for families where comprehensive, top-of-the-line dental services were easily accessible was my goal,” said Dr. Thomas Abele, who, since 1969, has been a pioneer and leader in the dental sciences in the Capital District. “With the support of a talented and dedicated staff, I hope I have achieved that.” By offering a total spectrum of care for all ages, Abele eliminates the need for patients to move from doctor to doctor to achieve optimal oral health, comfort and beauty. Early on, he spent the additional hours of training to become qualified in dental implant technology and root canal therapy. His consistent reinvestment in his practice ensures that patients are offered the latest in minimally invasive approaches, digital imaging, laser power and sedation dentistry. “Dental medicine, most pointedly when encompassing cosmetic dentistry, is definitely an art,” said Abele. “Every aesthetic aspect of a patient’s face must be taken into consideration when addressing reconstructive procedures, whether in the application of veneers and crowns or

restorations with implants.” Because Abele works closely with the technicians of his on-site dental lab, issues such as tooth color and shape are seamlessly addressed. His deep experience in placing dental implants, including the latest in genetically coated bone grafting, when required, and beautifully designed tooth restorations is renowned. Citing the importance of patient education, Abele said, “Although I personally feel responsible for my patients’ oral health, they have to ‘buy in.’ That requires helping them understand why compliance with good oral health habits, including attention to their gums, can make them healthier and happier. I enjoy taking the time needed to answer questions and provide ongoing support. “As much as I have always enjoyed the research and ongoing education that dental medicine requires in order to stay at the top of the game,” said Abele, “I most enjoy the results I see in my much valued patients. They are the ones who make me look good.” — Dr. Thomas Abele

Owner Nancy Katinas found her passion for cycling and fitness in 1999, and opened her business in Clifton Park eight years ago, with another following that in Latham two years later. The Revolution’s classes offer a unique full body workout for attendees. Circuit Revolution offers a mix of cardio and sculpting that mixes light weights and cycling, and ends with a core workout to give students a fulfilling experience in under an hour. Meanwhile, The Kettlebell Revolution uses the classic workout device to bring attendees a can’t-miss experience that uses their entire body and focuses on balance and motion. Katinas has recently added incorporated a new Performance IQ program to her workouts that sets goals for cyclers based on their age, weight and gender. The program, which can be seen on the television show “The Biggest Loser,” puts cyclers statistics

This helps and inspires cyclers to get into the right mode to get the best workout they can. When looking for instructors, Katinas isn’t interested in “Cookie cutter” people. “Everyone of our instructors comes with their own star quality,” she says, noting that some have a dancing style while others bring a more rugged style to their classes, giving people the ability to find their own favorite. The courses themselves can fit into anyone’s schedule, whether they’re game for an early morning Rev UP! program to help get their day started, an afternoon Lunch Crunch while they’re on break, or one of their several evening classes. The Revolution is now offering a new client three-course starter package that is the perfect way for people to try a new way to work out that has the power to get them fit, while the studio has the positive and motivating atmosphere that makes them want to come back.

ALTAMONT — Do aches and pains keep you from performing daily tasks or partaking in your favorite activities? Do you get heartburn or experience other digestive troubles after eating? Do you struggle to stay focused and/or always feel exhausted? Are you tired of going to your doctor’s office in search of answers to what’s causing your symptoms only to leave with more questions and more prescriptions? If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, one local nutrition and life coach wants you to know that there is still hope! According to Beth Sarris of Pillar, you’re probably experiencing the aforementioned or other symptoms because your body is physically, emotionally and chemically stressed. She explains that symptoms are your body’s way of informing you that it can no longer adapt to certain internal and external conditions you continue to put it through. Beth Sarris is the only practitioner in the Capital District who is certified to perform Nutrition Response Testing™.

This non-invasive assessment technique enables her to determine which stressors are disrupting your body’s ability to achieve optimum health and having a negative impact on the quality of your life as well. The most common stressors detected include metals, chemicals, foods, and/or scars.

• Region by region across the United States, installation of a new steel door on the front of a home can have a large impact on the resale value of a property. The ROI ranges from 123 percent at the highest, to 86 percent at the lowest — which is still a considerable investment return for such a simple project. Match the door’s style with the style of the house for the best value. • An attractive kitchen can encourage buyers to overlook some of a home’s less attractive components. In the kitchen, replacement countertops, wall color changes, new cabinetry and flooring offer the biggest ROI. • Dreaming of a new bedroom. Remodeling magazine also points to creating an attic bedroom to increase home value. The ROI of an attic remodel that adheres to code can garner an 83 percent ROI. • Worthy window replacement. Angie’s List, a home services review and referral resource, has found that the average ROI of new windows is 77 percent. The cost of installation and energy savings tend to offset at around the 10-year point.

After pinpointing which internal stressors are affecting your body, she’ll work one-on-one with you to develop and implement a custom nutrition program designed to address the root causes of your symptoms. In most cases, Beth Sarris’ individualized plans help you to reach your goals through a combination of diet, whole food supplements, and other resources to reduce the amount of stress that is having a negative impact on your health.

lthough most people appreciate wild animals, sometimes their activities conflict with our interests or well-being. The goal of Animal Arrest NY, Greater Capital Region is to provide safe, effective and humane solutions when animals cause damage to your home or property, or threaten the safety or health of you or your family. Kevin Bruce, owner of the company is licensed by the New York Sate Department of Environmental Conservation to perform nuisance wildlife control and is fully insured. “I deal with pretty much any type of animal that may be damaging residential, commercial, or industrial properties and structures, or causing threats to human health or safety,” said Bruce.

Hair removal is a unisex thing

Animal Arrest NY is a business venture Bruce started in 2014 after working in the field of wildlife damage management both for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and in the private sector for over 25 years. Most of the time, finding the solution to the problem starts with identifying the culprit, implementing measures for removal, if necessary, and developing plans to prevent the problem from happening again, in most cases by excluding entry to foundations, buildings, gardens, or properties. Bruce can provide recommendations and solutions for dealing with a variety of animals that may pose a problem. For more information, see the advertisement below.

COLONIE — Hair grows … sometimes just not where you want it to…. People come in to Smooth Reflections to get hair removal for many different reasons. Some just want the convenience of not having to shave while others may be dealing with hormonal hair growth, in-grown hairs or razor burn that they no longer want to suffer with, said Jaclyn Chorwat, Owner of Smooth Reflections. Here we offer both the newest technology in laser and electrolysis, so we are able to treat every hair type and hair color effectively and more comfortably. Our laser also has settings to treat both light and darker skin tones. The laser hair removal process takes an average of six to eight treatments and each appointment is spread out once every 6-10

Research Center study, nearly three quarters of adults closely follow local news by relying on local newspapers and other sources. In a nationwide phone survey of more than 2,000 participants, 72 percent of adults maintain interest in local news, citing their local newspaper as the most reliable source. One-third of those participants said the loss of their local newspaper would have a significant impact upon their lives. Not surprising, demographics suggest an older audience remains loyal to reading the newspaper. About 35 percent of those aged 40 and older would feel the loss of their local newspaper. However, 26 percent of younger readers said they, too, would consider the loss

of their local newspaper as a “major impact” on them.

The Spotlight

The Spotlight first appeared as a four-page penny saver in Delmar on Dec. 1, 1955. It was founded by Mrs. Charles E. Walsh, Jr., (as she listed herself in the paper at the time) with its “offices” at a residential address on Roweland Avenue. Today, Spotlight Newspapers provides weekly newspapers throughout the Capital District, both under the Spotlight brand and TheSpot518. EAST BERNE — With a vast selection of stone that fits every project, and the well-honed family knowledge to guide anyone through a project, the familyowned Helderberg Bluestone has become the go-to business for mason, contractors and homeowners alike. It’s been over 63 years since Giebtiz, her husband, and her father-in-law started the business, “We Started with nothing and built it up,” Giebitz proudly remarks. Giebitz has shared this family business with her son, who has worked there since he graduated high school- no small amount of time for the 58-year-old. Since then the business has lent a hand to various important projects including working on the Empire State Plaza, the Capital Building in Washington D.C., and Thacher Park where they placed boulders for feedings areas around the park. Giebitz favorite project though was working on Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia

where the business put coping on top of walls. The project took two years to complete but Giebitz said, “It was a very simple job, but very rewarding.” Today, the business is great for homeowners looking to spruce up their patio, driveway, or put in a new stone fireplace. The most common project they help with are kitchen countertops, created with Heldeberg’s namesake bluestone – it’s a sure fire way to add some pop to a well loved home. Giebitz and her son have both the resources and knowledge to help anyone looking to do a project with years of experience, and guiding advice for the layman and mason alike. All these years later Giebitz still enjoys and appreciates her line of work saying, “[It’s] a very interesting and very clean business. Heavy, but clean.” Located 30 minutes outside of Albany, and five minutes from the scenic Heldeberg Trail, Helderberg Bluestone makes sure you don’t break the bank on travel or supplies, with the expert knowledge to make sure you have the tools you need to make every project a success.
