Taking a ride up to see SAM
H
ave you stepped foot into the Saratoga Automobile Museum, yet? I admit that if someone asked me to play a game of word association and the name “Saratoga” came up, I’d likely say “horses” or “water.” The latter, after all, helped lend the city’s nickname. It is, however, unfair to handcuff Saratoga to just horses and water. Yes, we are talking a century’s worth of reputation built up here in upstate New York, but it suggests arrested development. Now, when I head up to Saratoga Springs, it’s not to play the horses, and it certainly isn’t to drink the spring water. (That’s a taste I’ve yet to, and don’t see that I will ever, acquire.) No, I’m more inclined to take in a concert, watch a ballet or listen to the orchestra at Saratoga Performing Arts Center. In the evening, I’ll admit to my attraction to the crackling electricity of its nightlife. Out of the four cities here in the Capital District, it has a unique blend of posh and bourgeois. With Skidmore College right here, one may dare to call it a college town. It has that kind of youthful energy to it. With some folks decked out in their best, you may be reminded of Shakespeare and how he wrote about the world being a stage and the people its players. Saratoga Springs is steeped in the arts, so where do automobiles come in? Well, as of last year, they roll right up onto SPAC’s stage. Americans have been infatuated with cars. Since automakers realized aesthetics are as important as functionality, men have developed love affairs with fast women named Corvette, Ferrari, Bugatti and more. Walk in the middle of a conversation in Saratoga and hear words that compliment power, elegance and symmetry. Adjectives paired easily with both ballet dancers in full flight and sports cars parked idle on the roadside. Calling the Avenue of the Pines its home, and SPAC its neighbor, the museum doesn’t seem so out of place now, does it? My first visit to the museum was just last month. I have to say, I plan on visiting the “horses” at the SAM more often in the next coming weeks. Sincerely, Michael Hallisey, Managing Editor Spotlight Newspapers

nline and otherwise, there’s a lot of information out there, and sometimes it’s difficult to tell what sources are credible. With millions of people relying on Social Security, scammers target audiences who are looking for program and benefit information. The law that addresses misleading Social Security and Medicare advertising prohibits people or non-government businesses from using words or emblems that mislead others. Their advertising can’t lead people to believe that they represent, are somehow affiliated with, or endorsed or approved by Social Security or the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid
Services (Medicare). People are often misled by advertisers who use the terms “Social Security” or “Medicare”. Often, these companies offer Social Security services for a fee, even though the same services are available directly from Social Security free of charge. These services include getting:

Organize Senior Moves
The autumn of our lives Michelle KavanaughAnastasi
By Mary Beth Galarneau
A
utumn is a time of transition. You would know this if you recently moved a child into a college dorm. Emotions, or at least the act of trying subdue them, were probably running high as you and your son or daughter met their new roommate(s), set up their dorm room and faced the inevitable reality that it was time for you leave your “baby” in their new….home. Seniors face a similar transition. If you’ve ever had to settle your aging parent into a senior/ assisted living community, you would know how that feels. Having to move your parent into a smaller space can be just as unsettling as leaving your teenager in a college dorm. There is a reason for that. Going off to college and moving into a senior community, are similar experiences. How? Well, for starters, it’s an entirely new experience which takes some adjusting. In senior living facilities, directors say that it takes a good 30 days for a new client to get acclimated. The same can be said for college students. No matter your age, being away from the comfort of home evokes the feelings of
homesickness. In school, there are group activities offered, such as hikes or barbecues, so kids can get acclimated and make new friends. Seniors also have to forge new friendships. Here, where the end goal isn’t to get good grades, it’s all about relaxing, having fun and being entertained. There are many activities going on that will keep you busier than you’ve ever been. Things like magicians and singers; crafts and baking; bingo and dancing; the race track and shopping. With so much to do, there is no time to be bored! Aside from missing home and having to meet new people, there are other ways the experiences are similar: Having to eat in a dining room with a large group of people. This can be intimidating at first, when you don’t know many people, but, once you develop friendships, it gets easier. Missing a beloved pet at home. Learning to do new things. Many students will be doing laundry and cooking for themselves for the first time, while
seniors who may be dealing with the loss of a spouse are learning to live alone and do things they haven’t had to do, such as banking or paying bills. Learning about your surroundings. Students in a new town will have to learn where the necessities – grocery store, bank, etc. – are. The same can be said for seniors if they have family or friends visit them and take them out and about. Family weekend! Colleges and senior communities host family fun weekends, which are a great way to meet and mingle. Health. Before going to school, students have to have updated check-ups. The same is true for seniors. Choosing what to take. Dorm rooms and senior housing can be very small. The challenge is in choosing what you absolutely need to take with you. Learning new technology. Colleges have apps so students can watch their laundry and know when it’s done and other programs such as Moodle, Blackboard or Edmodo, which are virtual learning environments. Seniors may be con-
nected to WiFi for the first time, and learn how to email, Skype or play video games that Wii offers, such as bowling, golf, tennis which provide fun and exercise. Life can be thought of as chapters. For recent graduates, that chapter is about college and choosing a major that will help start them their career path. Seniors, on the other hand, have “been there, done that” and their chapter is one of reflection and enjoyment. But, the feelings they face in their new environments are the same. Transitions may be hard, but families can help, whether you’re in the autumn of the year or the autumn of your life. Organize Senior Moves provides a wide-range of services to flawlessly move seniors into their new home. They will help purge/donate/sell items, prep for an estate sale, stage a home to sell, and completely coordinate your move to your new home right down to hanging curtains, organizing cabinets and making sure your electronics are hooked up. The Faith & Values of Rob Brill ‘Father, husband, Jew and journalist’ Editor’s Note: This article is Part 1 of a two-part series. The next article is scheduled to appear in our October edition of Senior Spotlight.
The 67-year-old is just as comfortable with the beat of a weekly pickup basketball game where he is fondly dubbed “The Commissioner.” He earned that title from taking care of the logistics for the ho knows what much same cast of characters the imagination who’ve been playing together of a daily news- for over a decade. Brill is also paper’s reader more than pleased to be the conjures up when they think of man who got the assist and not that paper’s Religion Editor? lect and creativity. He stays grounded as he ponders the oceans-wide differences – and similarities - of the faith communities in the Capital District as the editor of his newspaper’s weekly page called Faith and Values. “I’m not a member of a congregation,” he explains. “I’m not observant, but being Jewish is an essential part of who I am and how I think. I’m fascinated by other people’s religions and by ‘the Nones’ - the great new word for the growing group of Americans who don’t affiliate with any traditional faith but often say they are spiritual but not religious.”
Robert LaCosta It’d be hard to come up with a concise title for Rob’s biography, but very easy to let him describe himself in his accepting and ebullient style. “I’m a father and a husband, a Jew and a journalist, a neighbor and a New Yorker,” he says. Oh, if that was your idea all along of a Religion Editor, then you wrote the right sermon…that is, story. Robert J. LaCosta’s daily devotional writing is found at robertlacosta.com His latest book is “Portals to Heaven.” To suggest seniors 60 and over for this column, write norepcom@gmail.com

Dammerman’s Cars C
By
MICHAEL HALLISEY
arly Conners never knows what to expect before driving up to work each day. One morning, she said, the rolled into work to see the Batmobile in front of her building. Such a surprise is not uncommon for the Saratoga Automobile Museum’s executive director. “I have the best job in the world,” Conners said. She was named to the museum’s post last November. Her second-floor office still has that new car smell. After more than 15 years of working in college admissions, this chair best suits her. Her father passed on his love for cars. When introducing her husband to her father, she said he immediately became a “favorite son.” He owns a auto dealership. This is a family trade. There are more than 263 million registered cars in the United States. Nearly 85 percent of people drive a car to work. Those numbers suggest that nearly everyone has the shared experience of driving one. It’s a bond that welds us all together. Conners admits to having a love affair with fast Europeans — Audi and Porsche, to be specific. “I have a new love with a little Aston Martin,” she said. “So, that’s kind of fun, right now.” It’s not at all scandalous. The people who walk through the museum’s doors understand the passion behind her feelings with such cars. She said everyone has a story to share. People remember the first car they drove, or the one they trusted to bring home their first born. When she speaks of her favorite cars, she’s attracted to “safety” and “speed.”

“In upstate New York, you can drive around fast in the summer, but get out of any snow storm in the winter,” she said. Conners and her staff are preparing for an exciting auction that involves nearly 50 cars from the personal collection of the late Dennis Dammerman. Dammerman, who was a former vice chairman of General Electric, resided in Saratoga Springs, with his wife Marsha. He loved cars, and he loved the museum. All 44 vehicles,
history. All vehicles will be offered at no reserve. “The Saratoga Automobile Museum is thrilled and privileged to have the opportunity to feature the Dammerman Collection at this year’s Saratoga Auto Auction,” said Gary Brown, treasurer of the board of trustees for the Saratoga Automobile Museum. Brown shared his gratitude towards Marsha Dammerman for consigning the collection for auction. Dammerman was not only a car collector and enthusiast, but a trustee, supporter, and advocate for the museum. In 2009, Dammerman displayed 16 of his vehicles in an exhibit entitled, “Mid Century Marvels.” Now with this generous consignment, the Dammerman Collection sale at the Saratoga Photo by Michael Hallisey Auto Auction will ranging from a 1936 Ford Street Rod to help support the museum’s educational a 2013 Chevrolet Corvette 427 Convertprogramming, including its Distracted ible, will be auctioned off on Friday and Driving Safety Program. Saturday, Sept. 21 and 22, at the Saratoga Dammerman was 38 when Jack Welch Performing Arts Center. named him GE’s chief financial officer The collection, comprised largely of a in 1984, the youngest CFO in company variety of mid-century domestic conhistory. He held the position until 1998, vertibles, coupes, and sports cars, is the when he became Vice Chairman and Exlargest single consignment in the auction’s ecutive Officer of GE and Chairman of
GE Capital Services, Inc. The same year, CFO Magazine honored Dammerman with its first Life Achievement Award for CFO Excellence. Dammerman remained active in business after retiring from GE, serving on the boards of directors of BlackRock, Inc., one of the largest publicly traded investment management firms in the U.S.; Swiss Reinsurance Company Ltd.; Capmark Financial Group Inc.; and Discover Financial Services. He also served on the boards of various entities associated with his summer hometown of Saratoga Springs, including the New York Racing Association, Skidmore College, and Adirondack Trust. In addition to his service on numerous boards, Dammerman spent his retirement years indulging his passion for horses and automobiles, both classic and contemporary. Following his retirement, he and his wife, Marsha, made their primary home in Wellington, Fla., where Dammerman was a founding partner of Wellington Equestrian Partners, which developed the Winter Equestrian Festival into the largest and longest-running event in the sport.
