The burden often falls on the family to recognise the signs that an aging parent might need help with their activities of daily living to stay safe in the home. The standards are if a person cannot effectively do any one of these activities of daily living then they need care and assistance: 1. Eating – difficulty in eating or consuming nourishment. 2. Dressing - putting on and taking off all necessary items of clothing including medically necessary braces or artificial limbs. 3. Bathing - washing oneself on a routine basis in the tub, shower or by sponge bath. 4. Toileting - getting to and from, on and off the toilet, keeping a reasonable level of associated personal hygiene. 5. Ambulating – difficulty in walking with or without the assistance of a mechanical device, such as a wheelchair, braces, a walker, a cane or other walking aid device. 6. Transferring - the ability to move in and out of a bed, chair, wheelchair, with or without the use of equipment such as a cane, walker, crutches, grab bars or other support devices. 7. Continence - the ability to voluntarily control bowel or bladder function or, in the event of the in-ability to voluntarily control bowel or bladder functions (i.e. Incontinence), the ability to maintain a reasonable level of associated personal hygiene, with or without the use of medical supplies, equipment or devices such as protective undergarments or catheters.

LOCAL COMPANY IMPROVES THE LIVES OF FORMER ENERGY WORKERS The Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act (EEOICPA), first implemented by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) in July 2001, provides compensation and medical benefits to former Department of Energy (DOE) employees who became ill as a result of working in the atomic weapons industry. The Program compensates those suffering from any of more than 20 types of cancers or other ailments including beryllium and asbestos-related ailments and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Uranium miners, millers, and ore transporters are also eligible for benefits if they have developed an illness as a result of toxic exposure at a facility covered under Section 5 of the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA).

Elder Protective Services – For persons 60 years old and older who may experience abuse, neglect, exploitation, or isolation. Home and Community Based Services Waiver (HCBSW) For the frail elderly provides nonmedical services to older persons to help them maintain independence in their own homes as an alternative to nursing home placement. State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) Certified counselors provide unbiased information to Medicare beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers about Medicare and related health benefits. Senior Medicare Patrol (Nevada SMP) This program educates Medicare beneficiaries, their families and caregivers on how to: protect themselves from medical identity theft, detect errors, fraud and abuse, and report suspicious billing practices. Taxi Assistance Program (TAP) Program provides discounted taxicab fares to seniors and persons with disabilities based on income eligibility guidelines.

The purpose of the Nevada Veterans Foundation is to raise the necessary funds to build a Veteran’s Family Guest House, known as a Fisher House, for current and former veterans and their families. The New VA Medical Center in North Las Vegas services Veterans with in a 250 mile radius as well as visiting veterans (tourists). It is very expensive for many families outside of the immediate area to stay with their veterans who are receiving medical treatment for an extended period of time. The Fisher House would provide these families with a place to stay at no cost. Their goal is to raise $3 million for the construction of the Southern Nevada Fisher House and an additional $300,000 for a Meditation Garden Pathway, children’s play area, and RV/Travel trailer sites. • Currently (25) Fisher Houses in the VA system. • Over 22,000 families stayed at Fisher Houses in 2013. • Over 5.2 million nights of lodging provided since 1990. • Savings to families since 1990 over $235,000,000 • Annual savings to military and Veterans families exceeds $20 million.

Honor Flight Southern Nevada Our mission is to honor as many of these remaining “ordinary people who saved the world” as we can by providing them an organized and all expense paid, escorted three day trip to the memorials dedicated to their sacrifices. Our volunteer guardians pay their own way, and assist those most in need throughout the trip. *Guardians must apply and receive training for the flight.

Reverse mortgage, officially known as FHA’s Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM), is a very misjudged and misunderstood loan product that has a much broader reach and more benefits to those 62 and older than illustrated in the media news, in the mortgage and real estate industry at large. The reverse for Purchase program is a great way for those 62 and older to consider buying a home due to downsizing when they are empty nesting or purchasing to have a home to fit their needs going into retirement.
Reverse mortgage is an important tool in any financial planning strategy, and can be used to: 1. They can buy a house. The homeowner to be can use HECM for Purchase
program, buy a house without having to ever make another mortgage payment again. Using a reverse mortgage for purchase allows people to buy a house, often a more suitable home, allowing them to spend the rest of their lives in one place. While paying cash for their home outright could cause them to be house rich and cash poor, buying a house this way can allow them to leverage larger amount of their cash and equity. That makes the reverse mortgage for purchase a win for the homeowner to be or homeowner who needs to downsize.
2. Pay off existing mortgages, other debt or liens of a current home. The reverse mortgage can free up hundreds of dollars monthly, providing substantial cash flow help, which will allow homeowner to age in place. There are no credit score requirements, however there are income requirements that are necessary to ensure maintaining property taxes, insurance and homeowner association dues. The reverse mortgage is often a way to assist homeowner in meeting their retirement objectives.
3. Spend down, possible tax-free, equity of their home before they tap into the homeowner’s cash assets. The reverse mortgage allows the homeowner’s cash assets to have a chance to grow for many years before needing to access the cash reserve. The property equity can diminish over time, with the trade-off being more cash assets available down the road.

FHA created the reverse for purchase program in 2008 to make it easier to downsize(empty nester) or relocate(to retirement community). For example, say someone from New York wants to move closer to family in Las Vegas, or needs to move into a home that is adapted for senior living. They sell their house in their current location and end up with the proceeds to purchase their next home. The old way was either get a traditional mortgage they would have make monthly payments for the life of the loan. Or they could also pay cash, which eliminates monthly payments but may use up their cash reserve. Or a new way would be utilizes the reverse for purchase, which would allow them to leverage the reverse mortgage to make their next home purchase without using all their cash reserves.
Do reverse mortgages put a burden on the heirs of the homeowner who has a reverse mortgage?
When a reverse mortgage homeowner no longer lives in the home, due to selling, relocating or death, the loan and interest come due, usually the home is sold. If the home sells for more than the amount due on the reverse mortgage payoff, then the homeowner or homeowner’s heirs will get the remaining funds. If the home is worth less than what’s due, the FHA as the insurer of the loan covers the remaining negative balance. Because a reverse mortgage is a non-recourse loan, the heirs are not responsible to pay the negative difference when the home is sold.

LIVING WILL LOCKBOX: Secretary of State Underscores Value of Securing Important Healthcare Wishes Now Secretary of State Ross Miller encourages Nevadans to take steps now to secure their healthcare wishes rather than leaving such personal decisions up to others in a time of crisis. Individuals can take a few easy steps now to determine their advance health care directives such as living wills, and file those documents with Nevada’s no-cost Living Will Lockbox. The Living Will Lockbox is the best way to securely store advance health care directives while still having those important documents readily available to family members and health care providers at times of crisis. Since its launch more than five years ago, the program has proven to be sustainable, secure and easy to use. “We all deserve to have our end-of-life wishes respected,” said Secretary Miller. “With advanced care planning like living wills, health care providers can focus on a level of care based on the patient’s expressed wishes.” Many healthcare and legal professionals understand and appreciate the value of the Living Will Lockbox and can help answer questions about the program. The Secretary of State’s office works closely with elder law attorneys, estate planners, Nevada AARP, the Washoe County Senior Citizen Law Project, and the Southern Nevada Senior Law Program to ensure the general public can access information about the value of the service. Use of the Living Will Lockbox is free to all Nevadans, and registering, either as an individual or as an authorized healthcare provider, is very simple. Individuals can download the registration forms at www.livingwilllockbox.com, then send the completed forms and documents by mail or fax to the Nevada Secretary of State’s office. Travel Tips from Sara Raney Travel Concierge Traveling today is not as easy as it was years ago. You have to dress appropriately to be comfortable and safe. With layovers, long walks between connections, and greasy food, not to mention long flights, severe medical problems can arise when a passenger is not prepared for air travel. Here are 5 things you should NOT wear on a plane: 1. Tight clothing. Be careful of socks and knee highs that leave marks on your skin, as these could restrict the blood flow through your veins. 2. Boots, flip flops, or slippers. Wear walking shoes that are comfortable and easy to get on and off. Remember, your feet do swell when you travel. 3. Synthetic materials or nylons. Ladies, for long flights I recommend wearing pants. (You do not want to wake up with your not-so-tighty whities showing.) Wear comfortable, breathable clothing. 4. “Complicated” clothing. Leave those at home! Airplane lavatories are getting smaller and smaller. 5. Contact lenses. They can become dry and uncomfortable when flying. Wear glasses instead. (Because of the dry air I always take a decongestant with me, as well.) I am not saying for you to throw style out the window when you travel on a plane; be comfortable and look stylish. Another Travel Tip: Always remember that “extras” are given to those who look like they can afford to pay for them. WHY? Because they want future business from you. 64

How to Select an Assisted Living Home/Center The following is a consumer checklist of important services, amenities and accommodations in assisted living communities. Every community is unique. We recommend making several visits, at various times of day, to each residence you are considering.
Consider the following as you assess an assisted living residence: Atmosphere As you arrive at the residence, do you like its location and outward appearance? Did you receive a warm greeting from staff welcoming you to the residence? Does the administrator/staff call residents by name and interact warmly with them as you tour the residence?
Are elevators available for those unable to use stairways? Are hand rails available to aid in walking? Is the residence clean, free of odors and appropriately heated/cooled?
Do residents socialize with each other and appear happy and comfortable?
Does the residence meet local and/or state licensing requirements?
Are you able to talk with residents about how they like the residence and staff?
Does the residence have a means of security if a resident wanders?
Do the residents seem to be appropriate housemates for you or your loved one? Are staff appropriately dressed, personable and outgoing? Do the staff members treat each other in a professional manner?
Needs Assessments, Contracts, Costs & Finances Is a contractual agreement available that discloses healthcare and supportive services, all fees, as well as admission and discharge provisions?
Are the staff members that you pass during your tour friendly to you?
Does this process include the resident, their family and facility staff along with the potential resident’s physician.
Are visits with the resident welcome at any time?
When may a contract be terminated and what are refund policies?
Physical Features Is the community well-designed for resident’s needs? Is the floor plan easy to follow?

To what extent are medical services available, and how are these services provided?
Can residents arrange for transportation on fairly short notice?
Individual Unit Features Do dining room menus vary from day to day and meal to meal? Are different sized and types of units available? Are units for single and double occupancy available? Do all units have a telephone and cable TV and how is billing handled? Is a kitchen area/unit provided with a refrigerator, sink and cooking element?
Social & Recreational Activities Is there evidence of an organized activities program, such as a posted daily schedule, events in progress, reading materials, visitors, etc.? Are residents’ pets allowed in the residence? Who is responsible for their care? Does the residence have its own pets?
Food Service Does the residence provide three nutritionally balanced meals a day, seven days a week? Are snacks available? May a resident request special foods? Are common dining areas available? May residents eat meals in their units? May meals be provided at a time a resident would like or are there set times for meals?
Services Can the residence provide a list of services available? Does the residence provide housekeeping services in residents’ units? Does the residence provide transportation to doctors’ offices, the hairdresser, shopping and other activities desired by residents?
