Advocacy & Assistance to frail seniors living in the community – Advocacy, assistance, information and referrals for Seniors who are 60 years of age or older. Elder Protective Services – For persons 60 years old and older who may experience abuse, neglect, exploitation, or isolation. Home and Community Based Services Waiver (HCBSW) For the frail elderly provides nonmedical services to older persons to help them maintain independence in their own homes as an alternative to nursing home placement. HCBSW services can include the following services: • Case Management • Homemaker • Adult Day Care (Social Model) • Adult Companion • Respite • Personal Emergency Response System (PERS) • Chore Service • Personal Care Services (through state plan)

Homemaker Program – Homemaker services to qualifed individuals who are age 60 and older or disabled. Services may include general housekeeping, limited meal preparation, shopping, laundry, and errands. Long-Term Care Ombudsman – Address issues and problems faced by residents in long-term care facilities, which include residential facilities for groups and skilled nursing facilities. Personal Care Assistance Services (PAS) This program provides community based, in home services to enable adults with severe physical disabilities to remain in their own homes.

State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) Certified counselors provide unbiased information to Medicare beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers about Medicare and related health benefits. Senior Medicare Patrol (Nevada SMP) This program educates Medicare and beneficiaries, their families and caregivers on how to: protect themselves from medical identity theft, detect errors, fraud and abuse, and report suspicious billing practices. Taxi Assistance Program (TAP) Program provides discounted taxicab fares to seniors and persons with disabilities based on income eligibility guidelines.

The function of teeth is more important than just a great smile. They are needed to chew and grind down food for proper digestion. Teeth are also needed for speech. Ever try to sound out the letter “s” without your front teeth? The latest research shows that oral health and other medical conditions are more closely related than we thought before. They are no longer separate matters. We know we can’t live forever, but a key factor to a longer, healthier life is to prevent the pre-mature onset of the major threats to a happy, healthy life: Heart Disease, Stroke, Cancer, Diabetes, Alzheimer’, and lung diseases to name a few. We now know that in addition to good nutrition and exercise, keeping your mouth healthy is a vital factor for that longer, healthier life. It is estimated that during their lifetime 80% of the U.S. population will develop gum disease. Once it starts it does not usually reverse itself without specialized care. It begins with the formation of bacterial plaque, a colorless sticky substance that forms everyday. This bacterial plaque starts as a biofilm and continues to colonize and spread throughout the mouth. As this colony of bacteria increases, it will cause a mineral buildup called calculus, or tartar. The result is inflammation, gum recession, and bone loss. If left untreated, tooth loss and severe bone degeneration is the end result. But that’s just in the mouth. Remember, the mouth is the gateway to the body. One of the early signs of gum disease is that your gums turn from a pretty pink to and angry inflamed red. Scientists have discovered that bodily inflammation is linked with a host of diseases including heart disease, stroke, lung diseases cancers, Alzheimer’s and others. Gum disease is an inflammatory condition that does not go away without special treatment and it is a major cause of inflammation in many people. Living with undiagnosed and untreated diabetes can have a very rapid detrimental effect on a person’s health. According to the American Diabetes Association about 20% of Americans are affected by Diabetes. That’s almost 70 million people. Periodontal disease in the normal population is rare before age 20 and increases steadily to 60% in the 45-54 age group. In general, the rate of periodontal disease among diabetics is double the normal population. Bacteria that can survive without oxygen (anaerobic) live in the deep crevices and periodontal pockets. When these bacteria get into the blood system they make it more difficult for a diabetic to control their blood sugar. Additionally, the loss of teeth is a real problem for diabetics since their support for a denture erodes away more rapidly than in the non-diabetic person. As we have seen, the periodontal bacteria living in the gum pockets increase blood sugar, which would lead one to suspect that people with periodontal disease would be more likely to develop diabetes. My team and I have been trained in the latest advances in periodontal treatment and the use of dental lasers. Deep cleanings alone will not do the job. The development of lasers in dentistry is one of the most significant advances in effective treatment of periodontal disease. Laser treatment of periodontal disease painlessly eliminates bacteria and helps the tissue to regenerate which can help you avoid traditional gum surgery. How to Select an Assisted Living Home/Center The following is a consumer checklist of important services, amenities and accommodations in assisted living communities. Every community is unique. We recommend making several visits, at various times of day, to each residence you are considering.

Consider the following as you assess an assisted living residence: Atmosphere As you arrive at the residence, do you like its location and outward appearance? Did you receive a warm greeting from staff welcoming you to the residence? Does the administrator/staff call residents by name and interact warmly with them as you tour the residence?

Are elevators available for those unable to use stairways? Are hand rails available to aid in walking? Is the residence clean, free of odors and appropriately heated/cooled?

Do residents socialize with each other and appear happy and comfortable?

Does the residence meet local and/or state licensing requirements?

Are you able to talk with residents about how they like the residence and staff?

Does the residence have a means of security if a resident wanders?

Do the residents seem to be appropriate housemates for you or your loved one? Are staff appropriately dressed, personable and outgoing? Do the staff members treat each other in a professional manner?

Needs Assessments, Contracts, Costs & Finances Is a contractual agreement available that discloses healthcare and supportive services, all fees, as well as admission and discharge provisions?

Are the staff members that you pass during your tour friendly to you?

Does this process include the resident, their family and facility staff along with the potential resident’s physician.

Are visits with the resident welcome at any time?

When may a contract be terminated and what are refund policies?

Physical Features Is the community well-designed for resident’s needs? Is the floor plan easy to follow?

Are doorways, hallways and rooms accommodating to wheelchairs and walkers?

What are the policies for refunds and transfers? Is there an appeals process for dissatisfied residents?

Medication & Health Care Does the residence have specific policies regarding storage of medication, assistance with medications, training and supervision of staff and record keeping? Is self-administration of medication allowed? Are staff available to assist residents who experience memory, orientation, of judgment losses? To what extent are medical services available, and how are these services provided?

Can residents arrange for transportation on fairly short notice?

Individual Unit Features Do dining room menus vary from day to day and meal to meal? Are different sized and types of units available? Are units for single and double occupancy available? Do all units have a telephone and cable TV and how is billing handled? Is a kitchen area/unit provided with a refrigerator, sink and cooking element?

Social & Recreational Activities Is there evidence of an organized activities program, such as a posted daily schedule, events in progress, reading materials, visitors, etc.? Are residents’ pets allowed in the residence? Who is responsible for their care? Does the residence have its own pets?

Food Service Does the residence provide three nutritionally balanced meals a day, seven days a week? Are snacks available? May a resident request special foods? Are common dining areas available? May residents eat meals in their units? May meals be provided at a time a resident would like or are there set times for meals?

Services Can the residence provide a list of services available? Does the residence provide housekeeping services in residents’ units? Does the residence provide transportation to doctors’ offices, the hairdresser, shopping and other activities desired by residents?
