H

appy New Year Spot family! 2018 was a time of exciting change for the Spot pack including a re-homing with a new “Mama” … me! I am enthusiastically looking forward to connecting with all of the wonderful fans of Spot, its business partners and the animal welfare community and will always strive to be a good steward of its future with all of your help and support! Like many of you, my love for animals began in childhood and has included many cats of unusual name (Spyder, Rush, Wynton) and personalityfilled rescue dogs since 2004. This passion for animals has led me to animal welfare volunteering and support over the years for shelters, rescue groups and Disaster Animal Response Teams. I was blessed to have broad exposure to animal welfare groups throughout the US while working with a wonderful small NYC based team at ResQwalk (pronounced rescue), an app since donated to Best Friends Animal Society. As a hobby photographer, I regularly contributed to the former Prineville Territory Magazine and have photos published in The Rescued Dog Problem Solver by Tracy Libby. My proudest accomplishment to date (keep an eye on Spot!) is a 2013 video of a moving Pitbull survival story that took a 3rd place prize through Ellen DeGeneres’ Holiday Wishes Campaign. This resulted in a $25k donation to BrightSide Animal Center in Central Oregon! If you like a story with a happy ending, check it out at https://vimeo.com/120946591 As an animal lover and animal welfare supporter with a diverse background, I couldn’t let Spot go! So, in addition to our three rescue dogs (Charity, Feather and Monty), we adopted a 4th … Spot!  Jennifer has been a huge support over the past couple months working together with us behind the scenes for the love of Spot and we are grateful for your patience during this time of transition.

I can’t end this without expressing huge gratitude for the support, guidance, listening, encouragement and kindness experienced along this journey including (not limited to!) the following people: my darling hubby Joe, family Kevin, Marcie, Linda and Mom; most understanding and supportive employer ever-Dean; friends Diana, Cat, Shelly, Jan and Nancy; Attorney Sean Neary at Fitch Law Group; Spot support team Kristen, Jason and Angie; for the Team staying with Spot- Michelle, Rebecca, Megan and all of our friendly delivery people; the Spot business partners and everyday people expressing words of encouragement and support along the way! And most of all to the patient, experienced, magnetic, energetic, kind mentor and teacher Jennifer! It’s not goodbye, Jennifer, it’s “see you soon”  ∂ Thanks to you and Vonnie for leaving such a wonderful legacy in Spot. I’ve got HUGE shoes to fill!! Enough about me. Please share YOUR thoughts and ideas with us as we head into an exciting new year in the house of Spot. Wishing you a safe, happy, healthy 2019 filled with purrs and tail-waggin' fun! Please also remember to show some love to Spot advertisers and sponsors … for without them Spot would not exist!

Fetch World-Famous Oregon Kitten

Pets always change our lives for the better, but this Oregon kitten is changing lives far beyond his family’s. In October, Chuck Hawley was driving from his home in Silverton to his job in Salem when he saw a tiny kitten on the road. The kitten was covered in an industrial-type adhesive that kept his paws stuck to the asphalt. Hawley says he did what anyone would do — he freed the kitten from the pavement and took him to a veterinarian. But when the news media picked up the story, the entire world fell in love with the spunky gray tabby and his inspiring rescue. Now, Sticky is a permanent Silverton resident and a worldwide viral sensation. Visit the Spot website to see a video of Sticky at home, read about the worldwide movement of kindness he’s inspired, and see photos of Spot’s visit to Sticky’s house. http://spotmagazine.net/news/2019/1/3/tiny-rescued-kitten-inspiresworldwide-kindness

Iowa Boy Delights with “I’ve Pet That Dog” 10-year-old Gideon has 177,000 Twitter followers and a global fan base for doing what any dog-lover does anyway: he pets as many dogs as he can. On his Twitter feed @I’vePetThatDog, Gideon’s snapshots come with endearing tidbits about each new canine chum, such as “When Bubbie’s caregiver was deployed for the military, Bubbie missed him. Bubbie saw someone in uniform at a gas station and whimpered.” Now that Gideon has met nearly every dog in his community, he and his family sometimes drive 30-45 minutes in search of new friends to meet and pet. We all want to be Gideon. twitter.com/IvePetThatDog

"Just this side of Heaven, there's a place called Rainbow Bridge"

Vonnie Harris passed peacefully October 29 in the care and company of loved ones. Vonnie’s love of animals infused nearly everything she did. She came to Spot 10 years ago, first delivering the magazine. After expressing an interest in writing, she proved to be truly gifted and her stories touched many readers. Eventually Vonnie learned the many skills needed to manage Spot’s social media, website and various administrative roles. In short, she became indispensable, and “the voice of Spot,” sharing her heart, wit and love of animals. She also became “the face of Spot,” managing events for years with Spot VIP, Angie. Together they loved, laughed and played with Spot’s friends – two- and four-legged — loving every minute. Vonnie also cared for families as a pet sitter and volunteered for organizations such as Fences for Fido. She and her sister Viki created and operated Jake & Max’s Boxes of Love, an annual provisions drive for senior pets. Vonnie, thank you for your immeasurable contributions of love, laughter, wit, and service to pets and their people. Your light continues to shine, and we will forever hold you in our hearts. Imagine the Celebration at the Rainbow Bridge. — The Spot Family

Proud Issue Sponsor

BENNINGTON PROPERTIES Robert Bennington of family-owned Bennington Properties in Central Oregon is a father of six, husband, businessman, and HUGE dog lover. He is proud of his family’s tradition of not only allowing dogs to their beautiful Sunriver vacation homes but welcoming them as treasured guests. Also a longtime partner business of Spot, Bennington Properties sponsors this 2019 BEST in the BIZ edition in support of the Top Dog Awards and to honor the pet-centric businesses in the NW voted by readers as best in their fields. With this sponsorship, the Benningtons celebrate their love of animals, and the fantastic NW businesses and professionals who serve pets and their people. Robert and the entire Bennington Family offer congratulations to all the Top Dogs this year!

About Bennington Properties A winter wonderland this time of year, Sunriver is rich with opportunities for adventure, and Bennington vacation homes are beautiful, warm, and cozy — perfect to come home to after the fun of playing in the snow, skijoring, or enjoying Oregon’s first dog-friendly groomed ski/snowshoe trail. Returning guests often arrive laughing as their dogs get so excited approaching Bennington Properties. The pine- and juniper-scented air has an effect not unlike salt-fragrant air for beach-loving dogs. “They get excited in the car before you even get here!” Robert smiles. A favorite winter adventure for families with dogs is a snowshoe trip with Wanderlust. “It’s a phenomenal way to experience winter here, from beginners to highly experienced

explorers, says Robert. Wellbehaved dogs are welcome on most guided Wanderlust snowshoe trips, whose guides “make the snow and trees come to life with details about the natural history and ecology of the area.” Robert loves that many visiting guests and their dogs have become part of the Bennington family. “As dog people go, I’m as crazy as they get! If somebody remembers my dog’s name over my own, they certainly have a place in my heart.” Whether you’re booking a romantic escape for two, a family getaway for four, or a reunion for 16, Bennington Properties is there to help you create a lifetime of memories from a single vacation.

TRAINING / BEHAVIOR COMPANY

Training / Behavior Company Sit Means Sit TOP Dog Training DOG 9425 SW Commerce Cir. Unit 18B, Wilsonville 503-395-4364 • SitMeansSit.com | Est. 2009

So many letters! What do they mean? Training and socialization are some of the best things you can offer your dog. But how do you find a good trainer? And what do those letters after their names mean? The most common initials you’ll see are CPDT and CPDT-KA. CPDT = Certified Professional Dog Trainer

Philosophy/Mission: The question they’re most often asked is, “Have you ever met a dog that can’t be trained?” After training more than 3,000 dogs, they still answer, “Nope!” They work with busy families to address common behavior issues like jumping on guests, chewing furniture, or pulling on the leash. SMS also specializes in dogs who show aggression toward other dogs and people, and works with dogs who struggle with severe separation anxiety and discomfort in daily life.

Signature Service: SMS touts a lifetime warranty and continued

KA = Knowledge Assessed And if you’re still confused, you’re not alone. The titles indicate some formal training and testing. That’s important; you want a trainer who uses the most up-to-date, science-based training approaches. But that’s just a start.

support for families. After completing an immersive Board and Train program or the more hands-on Day Train option, dogs get free followup lessons and group classes for life.

Ask trusted friends for recommendations, especially if you admire their dogs’ manners and their humandog relationship.

Claim to Fame: Sit Means Sit Dog Training uses an attention-based training style, teaching people to capture their pup’s attention and guide them through a distracting situation. Several clients have joined SMS’s therapy dog GO TEAM, which visits hospitals, retirement homes, and schools to share the joy of well-trained pups.

Ask trainers to describe their training philosophy. You want to hear that they’re using behavioral science, and that they’re teaching and encouraging desired behaviors. Be wary of trainers who promise to “extinguish” unwanted behaviors.
