Die üblichen Öffnungszeiten in St. Moritz sind von 9 – 12.30 und 14 – 18.30 oder 19 Uhr. Am Samstag schliessen die meisten Shops bereits um 17 Uhr. Während der Saison bleiben viele Läden über Mittag durchgehend und abends länger geöffnet; manche Boutiquen auch Sonntags. For the most part, shops in St. Moritz are open from 9 am to 12.30 pm, and from 2 pm to 6.30 or 7 pm On Saturday, most of the shops already close at 5 pm. During the high season, many of them are open over lunchtime, and stay open longer in the evening; some boutiques are also open on Sunday.

Mit 16 ist man schon fast erwachsen. Wie unser Essential Guide St. Moritz, der in seiner sechzehnten Ausgabe eingespielt Tipps für den Aufenthalt on Top of the World preisgibt. Etwas älter sind die Winterferien, die vor genau 150 Jahren in St. Moritz erfunden worden sind. Seither ist das Oberengadin «das Original» unter den Winterferienorten. Das ehrt nicht nur, es verpflichtet auch. Vielleicht verspricht das Oberengadin manchmal zu viel, für uns ist es aber noch immer einer der schönsten Plätze, die man sich vorstellen kann. «Hier gibt es nichts, was es nicht gibt», bilanziert der ehemalige St. Moritzer Kurdirektor Hans Peter Danuser in seinem neusten Buch. Vielleicht sind es gerade diese grenzenlosen Möglichkeiten, die die Faszination für dieses Stück Erde ausmachen. Irgendwie fühlen wir uns deshalb immer noch wie Sechzehnjährige, die ihr ganzes Leben vor sich haben. Und das wird hoffentlich auch die nächsten 150 Jahre so bleiben. Somewhat is the winter tourism that is celebrating its 150th anniversary this winter. Since winter tourism has been established, the Upper Engadine is the most authentic of all winter destinations. It is not only an honor, it also represents a great commitment. Even though the Upper Engadine is used to being described in superlatives, we still think it is one of the greatest places in the world. “Nothing is impossible here” said the former Director of the Tourist Board Hans Peter Danuser in his recently published book. Maybe it’s the infinite range of possibilities that awake the passion for this patch of earth. Just like the Essential Guide, we all still feel like 16-year-old teenagers who still have their whole life ahead of them. Hopefully the next 150 years will remain the same! WIE ST. MORITZ DIE WINTERFERIEN ERFAND Der Überlieferung nach sass Johannes Badrutt im Herbst 1864 mit vier englischen Feriengästen in seinem Kulm Hotel in St. Moritz vor dem Kaminfeuer zusammen. Badrutt schwärmte ihnen vom Winter in St. Moritz vor: strahlender Sonnenschein, eine verschneite Landschaft und tagsüber milde Temperaturen. Kurz: Ein Paradies auf Erden. Die Engländer glaubten ihm kein Wort. Zu gut kannten sie den trüben, nasskalten Winter Englands. So kam es zur legendären Wette, deren 150-Jahr-Jubiläum in diesem Winter gefeiert wird. Die Engländer sollten im Dezember wiederkommen, schlug Badrutt vor. Und wenn sie ihren Aufenthalt nicht geniessen würden, so würde er ihnen die Reisekosten erstatten. Die Engländer kamen tatsächlich – und blieben bis Ostern. Badrutt gewann seine Wette, der Wintertourismus war lanciert.

150 JAHRE

HOW ST. MORITZ INVENTED WINTER TOURISM According to the legend, Johannes Badrutt was sitting with four English vacationers in the fall of 1864 in front of the fireplace in his hotel Kulm in St. Moritz. Badrutt regaled the guests with stories of St. Moritz in the winter: days filled with sunshine, a snowy, fairy-tale landscape, and mild temperatures during the day. Accustomed to the grey, rainy weather of English winters, they didn’t believe a single word. In reply, Badrutt made his now-famous bet: the English guests could return in December, and if they weren’t satisfied with their trip then he would refund all travel costs. They actually came back in December – and liked it so much that they stayed until Easter. Badrutt won his bet and winter tourism was born.

The constant movement of water, sand and sun create the bizarre and unique shapes of the driftwood. A fascinating and inspiring material of which artist Jeff Lleshi creates tables, aesthetic lamps, candle holders, light objects and mirrors. The artist has been living in the Engadine for almost a decade. He looks for his materials in the nature and finds the driftwood near the Inn River and the olive wood in Corfu in Greece, where he was born. His objects are unique and confer harmony, charisma and that certain something for any kind of space. Now his objects can be admired and purchased in the sophisticated shop on the main street in Zuoz.

THE SENNEREI’S GLACIER FONDUE This fondue is called glacier fondue because it has been elaborated at the Alp Nova, located next to the Morteratsch glacier. The Sennerei’s fondue cheese mix is made of high class Swiss raw milk and contains no additives. This is one of the reasons why it tastes homemade. The cheese mixes are also available at Globus or at the store’s online shop. Später zählte die Quellkirche des Heiligen Mauritius zu den beliebtesten Wallfahrtsorten Europas. 1519 versprach Papst Leo X sogar jedem die völlige Absolution, der zur Quellkirche des heiligen Mauritius pilgerte. Neu eröffnet: das monumentale Hallenbad St. Moritz mit verschiedenen Becken, Pools und Wellnessangeboten. Ein Gang durch die Galerien und Museen inspiriert darum oft auch zu einem etwas anderen Blick auf das Vertraute. Übrigens: Das im Sommer stattfindende St. Moritz Art Masters hat sich zum Treffpunkt für die internationale Kunstszene etabliert. Besuchen Sie es! Es treibt mich an den Rand, der zwischen Bekanntem und Unbekanntem, zwischen Vorhandensein und Leere, zwischen Materiellem und Immateriellem existiert. Ich suche ein gewisses Etwas, das nur selten zum Vorschein kommt. Auch wenn wir es nur flüchtig zu sehen bekommen, es erinnert uns daran, dass es etwas jenseits von Erscheinungen und Worten gibt. Ich mache mir Eigenschaften von Ernsthaftigkeit und Stille zu Eigen. In meinen Gemälden und Zeichnungen bevorzuge ich das Einfache, das Bescheidene, das sich in endloser Ferne öffnet. Ich mache häufig von der weissen Fläche Gebrauch. Weiss hat zweierlei Aspekte: es ist die Summe aller Farben, aber auch die Essenz des Lichts ohne die Unechtheit der Farben. Vor allem aber, weiss ist Helligkeit, Stille und Friede. Innerhalb dieses Begriffsumfeldes suche ich jegliches Licht, aber auch Transparenz, damit dem Zuschauer geholfen wird, tiefer hineinzuschauen und sich in vollem Bewusstsein des Betrachtungsprozesses in ein ruhiges, immaterielles Sichtfeld einzutauchen. Diese Engadin-Ausstellung ist das Ergebnis mehrerer Hinterland-Skitouren, die ich im Winter 2014 vornahm. Die Berge des Engadins schaffen einen Eindruck absoluter Dauerhaftigkeit, vom ewigen Bestand des Mineralischen. Dies ist keine feindliche Landschaft; sie ist einfach da – unberührt und vollkommen in der essentiellen Stille.

«I am drawn to the edge, that which exists between the known and the unknown, between presence and absence, between material and immaterial. I am after a certain something that is seldom revealed. When we catch a glimpse of it, we are reminded that there is something beyond appearances and beyond words. I embrace qualities of sobriety and silence. In my painting and drawing, I prefer the simple, the humble which opens on to infinity. I use a lot the white surface. White has a double aspect: it is the sum of all colours but it is also the colour of light seen in its essence, without the fakeness of colours. White is above all light, quietness and peace. In this vocabulary, I am seeking any light or transparency that helps the viewer to look beyond and become immersed in a quiet and dematerialised field of vision, completely conscious of the viewing process. This Engadine exhibition is the result of numerous backcountry ski tours that I took during the winter 2014. The Engadine mountains convey the impression of absolute permanence, of mineral eternity.This lanscape is not hostile. It is simply there – untouched, complete in the essential silence.»

Pure Engadine is the title of this year’s new calendar created by the successful and internationally known photographer Peter Vann. The artist lives and operates his gallery in S-chanf. ZUFFELLATO RINALDI Die beiden einheimischen Künstler Marco Zuffellato und Moreno Rinaldi stellen ihre Arbeiten in der neu eröffneten Kunstgalerie an der Hauptstrasse von Zernez aus. Zuffellato arbeitet mit Holz, Metall und organischen Elementen und haucht scheinbar sinnlosen Gegenständen neues Leben ein. So entstehen Skulpturen und Objekte archaischer Schönheit mit einer ganz eigenen mystischen Energie. Rinaldi hingegen schafft auf seinen grossflächigen Bildern fantastische Welten aus Bitumen und Ölfarbe, die an Nebel ferner Galaxien erinnern. Der Zusammenschluss in der eigenen Galerie findet auch in gemeinsamen Kunstwerken seinen Niederschlag: ein spannender Kosmos zwischen Mythos und Fiction. The local artists Zuffellato and Moreno Rinaldi show their art in the recently inaugurated art gallery on the main street of Zernez. Zuffellato works with wood, metal and organic elements and awakens motionless objects to life. He creates sculptures and objects of an archaic beauty with a unique mystic energy. Rinaldi’s paintings show imaginary universes made with bitumen and oil paint and remind the spectator of some remote foggy galaxies.
