O FF IC E OF THE P R E S ID E N T
Class of 1946, A note of this kind should not be a sermon,— Just a chat between friends. On your farewell to the classrooms of St. Peter it is not contrary to dignity and order that you bring some of the abiding spirit of those classrooms with you. Honored tradition has it that "you are now beginning life." That is a convenient way of putting it, but not a true one. I would rather tell you not to begin a new life at all. Continue the old one, the one you have been leading the past four years. It has been a valuable one. For it has stressed two values,— the one eternal, the other temporal. It has told you that you are a real success if you save your immortal soul, a failure if you lose it. Every thing else in life must be subject to that eternal truth. Your school has likewise tried to impress upon you to be sharply judicious in every thing else,— in your friendships, your mode of life, your ambitions, in the total economy of your material existence. Be great in thought, word and deed. Be debtors to your fellows only in charity. Be what your Alma Mater wants you to be,— noble Catholic gentlemen, honoring G-od and country in every public and private action of your lives. On to greater things] Hopefully yours,
