TH E H A R R O W IN G LIFE OF W IL L IE PREP | F T H E R E is any similarity between the life of W illie and your own, the resemblance is purely intentional. You are W illie from the first day in Ju g to the future balding hair. The artist, one A l Capp de Zabala, drew largely from his own desperate struggles to stay awake in class and to think up new excuses for the Prefect of Discipline. Remember your own? So you see in W illie a mirror from the happy, careless days of First Year to sombre wrestling with Caesar, Cicero and the formula for sound waves. But, maybe now you are thinking that Grand Street was a grand street after all.

RANDOM RIPPLES FROM THE WAIL’S WAKE During the Summer Jerry Sheehan traveled the world over, Canada being one of the countries visited ••• "Spaniard" Degnan did what he's been doing all his natural (?) life,— jocking 'em up from impossible angles at any and all baskets . . . John Lombardo was singing "I'v e Been Working On The Railroad." . . . Max Giuttari dreamed every day of last year's Trig periods . . . Frank Coyle, Yinnie Badala and Hank Rohlfs did nothing but drool over the prospects of again debating St. Cecilia's of Kearny . . . The song that keeps running through Frank's mind is "M a rie " . . . W e didn't know that George McDonald played the harp, but that's what was on that band questionnaire passed around the classes re cently .
Prepette Supreme The blue sedan parked beyond the end zone at Roosevelt Stadium is the box seat of Prep's most ardent fan. For fun-loving, thrill-seeking Ann Finnerty every Prep touchdown rates the tops in thrills. Though crippled, Ann has attended every Prep game she could since she was struck with her mal ady. She is taking her high school credits at St. Dom's and expects to graduate this year. Best battle in her scrapbook was the PrepSnyder fracas of a year ago. Jack Welter was her favorite thrillmaker, though she ex pects a rival to emerge before the present season "which I expect will be an undefeated one" is ended.
Rally Rebel Antagonizing and agitating Prep's football fates, Philip Bosco, the distorted-darling of the Prep, put on the most canned-ham per formance of his theatrical career before 900 rallying 'Prepmen. Cloaked in the dark blue uniform of Xavier, the fugitive from Hallow e'en was dubbed " Leader of the Rebels” . There was a sparkle in his devilish eye as he raised his gloved hand for silence. Pande monium broke out! Not since the death of Mussolini has there been such frantic cheer ing and booing.
Yard Council Newest activity to spring from Prep's ever fertile asphalt campus is the Intramural Ath letic Council. Mr. English, S.J., Intram Head, has appointed a team of ten whose task it will be to organize and expedite schedules and handle equipment for the yard. Those selected include Jerry Degnan and Max Snyder from Senior year and Frank Heffron and John Rochford from Junior. Soph selectees list Matt Boylan, Steve Peters, Don Finn, Joe Quinn, Jack Clune and Tom O'Grady.
Poem of the W eek H a ts

D e p t.
W e tip our hats to what we consider a great Prep combination— Coach Tom O'Brien and his hard-pressed Maroon quintet. They say that there is strength in poverty. If this is true, this year's Prep five must be the strongest in history. For feast your eyes upon these facts, my hearties. Two practice sessions were held for the varsity cagers from December 15 to January 20.
Red Pawns "W e 're being invaded!" thundered Fr. Fahey, S.J. as he banged his fist dramatically on the counter of the bookstore. "W e are being infiltrated by Communists!" Then seeing the alarm which he had created, the good Father muttered an apology. " I was only speaking of the Communists who are overrunning the Chess Clubs of America," he declared meekly. "W e ll," he said with re newed vigor, "a t least our Chess Club has no Communists and it will go places." Gymnastic*. Monday 17th brings to light the realization of a hazy dream ten years in the making. The ancient weeds will make room for spades and picks; the hard-crusted ground will be broken. Prep's gym is enter ing the Nursey stage! Work on the "Ragged Acres" should last about 100 working days.

Hill Topped There is a time in every season when com parative records are tossed to the winds and everything is forgotten except the fact that a game will be won that day. November 26th was just such a day. Though both teams on the whole were outstanding, there are some individuals who deserve special mention for their fine per formances. On the Petrean line. Bill Naughton, Tom Burde and Don Moriarty played magnificently. Krone's one-hander was a key play. Along with Hyatt and Lumino, Borkowski was never better. Then of course there was Cavaliere and Waterbury. Bar bosa, Del'Orto, Marron, Haug and McGregors were the Hilltopper's better performers.
Tavern Talk As Winchell would say, ''Orchids to Messrs. Marr, O'Connell, S.J., and Yates, S .J." It's doubtful whether even Cohan himself could find any fault with the per formance of the Thespians on the Fifth and Sixth. In the words of one of the audience, "It's the best high school performance I ever saw."
Little W illie in the best of sashes Fell in the fire and was burned to ashes. By and by the room grew chilly. No one poked up Willie.— Silly?
Prep Games The Second Annual St. Peter's Prep Track and Field Championships held at the Armory January 24th heralded the current Indoor track season and, it might be*' said, really gave it a flying start. Over 1300 athletes from New York and New Jersey schools turned out at the local drillshed, not to men tion the class representatives in the "Closed to St. Peter's" events.
Yearbook Yodels Not that we intend to give our rivals any free publicity nor to add insults to insults, but rumor has it that out of the woodwork of the Petrean office came the following state ments: "Tom Green sold ads at every door, his quota was met with dollars galore!" N.B.— ( end of rhyme).
THE LYONS DEN Jonas, it is said, found conditions in the whale abdominal; we find them abom inable. (Scurry for the dictionary, men.) There is a legend that after a few weeks in the Petroc office, the newshawk de velops a spare lung which enables him to convert the atmosphere of the office (5 0 % tobacco smoke, 2 5 % Colgate fumes, 2 5 % Grand Street dust) into breathable air.
Operation Rib The Petrean staff has patiently combed through the mites of excess verbiage turned out by our Wetroc rivals and found only the above items * meet our rigid literary standards. Our statisticians estimate the proportions to be one liter ate line per thousand. Having suffered in dignified silence the second floor bedlam (which we de duce to be the noise Papa Wail hammer ing a simple idea through the thick skulls of the young) and having endured quietly many witless Wetrocean jibes, we at long last challenge Wetroc to mortal combat— a foul-shooting contest— the losers to pay in cokes. Oil up your flippers. Wails.

THE PLA Y ^ E O R G E C O H A N 'S poetic comedy hit, T H E T A V E R N , was capably presented by the Grand Street Thespians under the more than able tutelage of Messrs. Marr, O 'C o n n e ll, S .J ., and Y a te s, S . J . THE T A V E R N is a play of delightful nonsense. The first act was a bedlam of confusion and hilarious comedy and served as the keynote for the remainder of the evening. The superb directing, acting and casting made for a production, the like of which Prep has not seen in many a year

TH E P L A Y E R S " T HE play is only what the actors make it," someone has said, and this axiom applies not only to costly Broadway productions but to Prep's own presentation, T H E T A V E R N , Phil Bosco, when on the stage, spun most of the action around his lovable Vagabond char足 acter. His supporting cast did remarkably fine jobs, esffccially Dave W ilson, Dennis Doogan, Bob Meyer, Jo e Brezina, Bill Fagan and Herman Roleke. Indeed, it was the acting of the minor roles which gave Bosco the support he deserved and thus made the play the success it was.

"J*HE '47 campaign opened with Prep tearing Tech's " T " , 33-0. Early in the second quarter, Andy Krone scored the initial T. D. of the season after taking a Lumino pass on the one. A few minutes later, Johnny Hyatt smashed over from the one, climaxing a 75-yard drive. Cavaliere converted. In the third period, Jablonski blasted 26 yards for one T. D. and swept left end five yards for another. Two placements by Cavaliere made it 27-0. With a few minutes remaining, Cassedy scored on a pass from Lumino.
KAYDETS KAYOED p R E P next belted the Boys in Blue from across the river, 20-12. Hyatt intercepted a Cadet pass on their own 42 and set up Prep's first T. D. A few plays later Lumino tossed to Moriarty for the score. The P. A. T. was good. In the sec足 ond quarter, Hyatt made a great catch of a Lumino pass and Prep led at the half 13-0. A blocked punt gave Xavier its first score but Prep came back for six more. With time running out, Tweedy ran 85 yards for another Blue score.
T E A M PLA Y C H EC K S EMERSON D IS P L A Y IN G their finest performance of the season, the Petreans checked the ground attack and batted down the aerial barrage of a powerful Emerson eleven. Follow足 ing an exchange of punts, Lumino threw to Hyatt on the Blue 40 and Johnny outraced Limonzinere to score. The conversion was good making it 7-0, the way it stood until Tommy Borkowski put the finishing touches on a 94-yard drive by blasting through the middle from the one in the third period. Oavaliere was wide; the final score, 13-0.

W H IT E W A S H E R S P A IN T E D RED M I N D F U L of the schoolyard w hite-w ashing. Prep scrubbed Bayonne 40-12. Moriarty took one of Lum's tosses on the five and loped over to begin the spree. After a 28-yard drive, Jablonski smashed across. Cayaliere converted. In the second quarter, Hyatt raced around end 86 yards to add six more points; but Bayonne struck back as Hurtz took a reverse on the kickoff and went 70 yards to score. Prep's last three T. D.'s came on runs by jablonski and Hyatt and a pass from Rieger to Carducci. Larino scored for Bayonne.
PREP A S S A S S IN A T E S L IN C O L N p R E P made it six straight by licking the Lincoln Lions 13-6. After taking the kickoff. Prep marched to the Lincoln 31, where Lumino passed to Moriarty for the first score. Cavaliere was good. Another Prep drive was halted on the Blue 32. Giordano crashed over for Lincoln. On the second play of the second half, Lumino took a handoff from Hyatt and raced for 45 yards to score. Fine defensive play rounded out the game.
S U N D A Y 'S G A M E W O N M O N D A Y T H E day was cold and Prep's attack was frigid, as the undefeated reign of St. Peter's came to an end at the hands of the Green and Gold Michaelians. A highly underrated Irish eleven did what so many teams failed to do. In the second quarter, with the ball on the Green 48, Farley passed to Jahnsen who was caught by Hyatt on the three. Califano pushed over one play later. The play see足 sawed for the rest of the game. Jahnsen's ineligibility forfeited the game to Prep; score, 1-0.
Hank hangs on,

Hyatt retaliated with a 15-yard sweep. A moment later, Schirmer bulled over after Raisch dashed 62 yards to the five. Prep's answer was a 62 yard sprint by Hyatt with a pass from Rieger. Memorial quickly pushed Raisch over and scored twice on inter足 cepted passes. The final score was 38-12.
Hyatt almost makes it, as the line looks, on.

underdog Dickinson eleven, armed with a speedy scatback in Haug and the will to win, rolled onto the field Thanksgiving Day. In the first quarter, Hyatt, be足 hind Borkowski's key block, raced 68 yards for the score. The P. A. T. was wide. Dickinson came back with Russo over from the one. A screen pass set up the next tally with Borkowski smashing over from the one. The allimportant point was made by Cavaliere. A few plays later, Haug went over for the Rams but Dell Orto missed his fateful kick.

TH E BU LLDO G S BITE B A C K p R E P met a highly potent Emerson team in the County playoff. The first score was Limonzinere's five yard jaunt after Lumino had punted to the Maroon 47. A Prep drive stalled and a few plays later Emer son had marched to another T. D. Limonzinere galloped for another score with an intercepted pass. Campisi blocked a punt for Prep's score. A fourth Blue score came on a 14-yard slice by Bartelone. The P. A. T. was good. The Champion ship was lost.

Tom O'Brien resigned to enter business, Prep lost much more than an athletic coach. It is not hard to hire coaches and good ones. But a Catholic gentleman can足 not be hired. There are not enough of them to go around. This was his real contribution to St. Peter's . . . his example to coming men what a real Catholic M an is. His splendid record of 104 victories against 55 defeats on the court is unimportant beside this.
A LESSO N IN P L A Y M A K IN G “ T H E P E T R E A N is not satisfied with just showing you faces and action shots. W e wanted to give you a bit of inside basketball. So we asked the Coach to set up a play and we would tell the story in photographs. In Picture One Faherty has just passed from out-of-bounds to M oriarity in the center circle. M arkey starts to run his man out of action. In Picture Two the guard has been rubbed off against Moriarity, who has returned the ball to Faherty. In Picture T h ree Faherty bounce-passes to M arkey who is now free. In Picture Four M arkey starts his layup as Moreto comes from deep court to get a possible rebound. In Pic tu re Five M arkey goes up and Faherty is set to follow, if necessary. Try this one in the family living room.
