The Door, a Gate, and some d o o r s . Christ, W ho is the Door to eternal life, and Our Lady, the L itany’s l o v e l ^ ^ t ^ f n e a v e n , are the insniratioijJ*m tiH U 'liiii. imr book I.he doors of Prep. For as through Christ and through H is M other we come to L ife and Vision so it has been our good fortune these past fo u r years to come through the doors o f Prep to a deeper understanding o f the m eaning o f life and the hope o f our vision. Each door o f chapel, class and gym has led to vistas new. A t penance-grille and altar rail, at desk, in lab, on rostrum , stage, on field and court, in office and in sanctum we have come to learn not so m uch how to m ake a living b ut rather how to live. W ith in the doors of classroom, gym and chapel we have learned to shape the whole o f life, intellectual, physical, moral— to consider the whole man, body and soul, rad to develop ourselves accordingly. In tfuN ijjht o f the past and of the present, the f u t u ^ h / M s bright promise: for Christ isttiS Q o o r and our Lady the Gate in w hom and th ro u }» k^h °m our hoPe has been nourlshed w ithin the portals of P ^ ^ ^ r a living hope, nurtured in the past and in the pfoq^nt for the shining future of peace which is the work of justice.

The Student Council, composed of representatives of the various senior classes, takes counsel with the School Faculty and promotes student activities, thereby train ing for future community leadership. The Intramural Council is responsible for the care and distribution of equipment used in intramural sports. The K . B. S. Servers assist, as a guard of honor, at the altar for the weekly K. B. S. Mass and for the First Friday Devotions. A keystone of Prep activities is the Sodality of Our Lady, wherein the members strive to bring themselves and others closer to God, as companions of Our Lady. The Guard of Honor ( Knights of the Blessed Sacrament) and the Crusaders of Our Lady gather, respectively, on the First Friday and the First Saturday of every month each to offer the sacrifice of a Holy Hour of Reparation for Christ and His Blessed Mother. The Classical Academy seeks for a deeper under standing of the great minds of the past, throuqh a more extensive study of the classical authors. St. Peter’s bi* weekly newspaper, the Petroc, specializing in pizza, print and Prep, packs plenty of punch in each of its pulsing pages. The Glee Club brought further renown to the Prep this year with John Sweeney, a Senior, direct ing the vocal traffic. Mr. Bartlett, S.J. piloted his welltrained thespians of the Radio Workshop through the airwaves of Newark, Jersey City and the surrounding countryside. On platform, radio and T V Prep’s Oratory Group won headline recognition and honors. The Beaudevin and Collins Debating Societies strove successfully to develop the mental and vocal talents of their sharpwitted members. The Modern I.anguage Academies aimed to make their members familiar with the history, culture and political background of the people whose language they had

the w-Uo-le &j life

studied. The staff of the Petrean produced the book you’re reading now. A stimulating flow of books and periodicals was channeled to the Prep students through the capable Library Staff. A practical knowledge and appreciation of the world of atoms and of industrial plant-operation was the aim, and under M r. Devlin’s d ire c tio n , the acco m p lish m e n t of m em bers of the Chemistry Club. W ith M r. Illy wielding the baton, the Prep Orchestra gave experience to its talented members while affording them fun and musical relaxation that re-echoed with appreciative audience applause. The Academy of Classical Music develops in its members an appreciation of the finer music. “ The play’s the thing” and this year the adaptation of Charles Dickens “ A Tale of Two Cities” was per formed before more than a thousand first-and secondnighters. Even M r. Dickens, himself, could not have failed to be impressed with the dramatic overtones of this novel-turned-play. The Camera Club, stocked with Prep’s shutter-bugs, teaches the latest methods of photography through lectures and practice. Its mentor, M r. Haus, S.J., is also the guiding hand behind the Darkroom Stag, which is responsible for many of the fine pictures which appear here and in the Petroc. The many dark hours spent by M r. Haus, S.J., with his pro teges have resulted in much of the light which is being thrown by these pages upon Prepsters and the Prep. Sparked by the Band, our Freshmen Cheerleaders made more lively the lively football season and even braved the perils of the basketball court to lead the yells for a championship team. And last, but by no means least, with M r. Hofmann, S.J. and M r. Vicedomini, the loyai Band proved itself to be a true symbol of Peter’s pride and glory.

Boch bolts o ff tackle.

Opening day. 8,000 fans watched the Prep swamp a Bull dog eleven, 28-6. Bruen booted to the Prep end zone. Eight plays later, Schwarze scored on a QB sneak. Murtagh brought it to 7-0. Second score came on a run by Waddleton. Duke rounded it out to 14. Minutes later, the saddened Bulldogs saw Papaccio make the third tally. Duke obliged again. Ferris’ only score came on a run by Scarpa. The last Prep TD was set up on runs by Fay, Papaccio, and Daab. Schwarze upped the score to 27. Murtagh’s educated toe made it a perfect 28.

Captain Onorato won the toss and Murtagh booted. The Dem’s Arcediano re turned the ball to the Prep 40. Rushes gained nothing, so the Redwings kicked to the Prep 29. Here, the W ing s held up traffic. Schwarze booted to the Red’s 25. A f t e r th e n e x t e x c h a n g e o f p u n t s Schwarze passed to Waddelton on the 48, and Papaccio missed the first down. Schwarze then kicked to the Dem’s 15, where Lisa dropped the ball. On the bot tom of the pile were Zanowski and Harbace. Schwarze passed to Fay who scored the TD. Murtagh PA-ed for the 7-0 score. The Maroon held fast and went on to guard their second win.

Road to victory.

M arching orders.

Tim back: cast in new role.

Prep mudders maul Demarest.

Block-thirsty Breyan sweeps in.

Columbus Day, and the Tiger tussled the Prep eleven. A fter punt ing and charging, the Prep took over from their own 48. Waddleton and Papaccio slid to the 33. Schwarze’s first pass missed Boch, but he later' made it up with a perfect lob to him for 6 points. Duke upped it to 7. Then the Tiger came back with a six-point tally, went on to balance the score at 7-all. The Prep forged ahead to 13 with the help of Breyan, and in the third quarter Fay caught Schwarze’s pass to seal the score at 19-7. For Murtagh missed the try for extra point.

In the fourth game of the season the Petreans faced Sweeney. Drives by B r e y a n and A h e r n set up Schwarze’s pass to W addleton who scored. Duke’s kick was wide. Prep rolled again with the help of Hanlon. Waddleton lunged over from the two. Murtagh made it good for 13. Once again the Prep scored in back of Russ Tagliareni. Duke smoothly brought the account to 20-0 at the half. Jo e O ’Grady crossed the goal line for the final tally. Murtagh marked it up to 27.

Galloping O ’G rady hits pay dirt.

Prep’s opening kick went to Simmons on his 30, but he fumbled. DiDomenico recovered. Three tries at the line, and the Prep booted to the Lion’s two. A kick blocked by Randzio, and Harbace ac counted for the first TD. Murtagh made it good for 7. W ith the ball on the Lion’s 30, Schwarze attempted a pass to Fay. Here, Lincoln’s Duncan batted the ball to Waddleton who went the distance for the score. Up came Duke, and up went the score, 14-0. The final tally was earned on runs by Hanlon and Waddleton and through passes to Onorato who scored. Again Murtagh clicked, and the game rested at 21-0.

The day of days arrived, with the M em ’s to eke out a 6-0 victory over the Maroon. Exchanges of punts marked the only action on the part of both teams for the first half. Came the third period, and the M em ’s began to roll. Prep, with the ball on its own 9, was forced to punt after no gain. Schwarze then kicked to his own 43. From there the M em ’s started. DeSantis passed to Faber on the 31. A line-plunge for two, and on the next down Faber caught another DeSantis pass on the six-yard line. A five-yard loss delayed the drive, but Donofrio then cut through the end to score. The P A T was missed. During the fourth quarter the Memorial defense held. So, too, did the score, 6-0.

M e ms menace Marauders.

T eam strains as Prep gains.

Hourican rocks W ad d le to n C aught glancing. Co-captains A h e rn and C h erry receive Fr. M c C arth y, S .J., trophy.

November 1 1. The Marauders played host to Xavier. Aggressive action be gan as Cadet Capt. Hourican snatched a Schwarze pass and brought it to the Prep 32. Two tries at the line made no gain, and Xavier was apparently stopped. But a pass into the end-zone on fourth down turned the trick. The Cadets led, 6-0. The second half be gan with Schwarze passing to W addle ton. A penalty brought the ball to the one-yard line, and Schwarze sneaked it over. Here Murtagh stepped up to make it 7-6. Scarcely had the fans set tled down, when the Redhead cracked through the Cadet defense and scored. Duke missed. An 80-yard march was anti-climaxed as W addy fumbled the ball in the Xavier end-zone. Cadet Garvey snatched the loose spiral in mid air and raced 100 yards for the score. The pass from center was too high. The prep still led, 13-12. The finale found the Prep in possession of the ball and of the Father McCarthy Trophy.

Turkey Day, and the clash of oldtime rivals, Prep and Dickinson. Co-Captains Randzio and Rickard elected to receive. As the stubborn Ram held, the Maroon kicked. M ullraney lost eight yards, then booted to the Prep 21. Schwarze passed to Papaccio on the Ram 35. W addleton then cut to the Ram 15, from there hit paydirt. Murtagh made his point. Score, 7-0. Randzio and Manna blunted all Ram line-stabs, and the Ram booted to the Prep 49. Schwarze passed to Boch for 14 yards, and Hanlon set up another TD. Again the QB passed to Fay, W addy cut to the one-yard line, scored. Prep led, 14-0. The final score came, after an intercepted Ram pass. A pass to Fay, runs by Waddleton and Papaccio, and the ball was on the 4. Hanlon lost a yard, but Boch struck home. Pro-like, Duke was true on the P A T for a final 21 -0. The Most Valuable Player Tommy Myers Memorial Trophy went to deserving Bob Randzio.
