You would not have said St. Peter was the “pious kind” if you met him walking the roads of the world. True holiness does not lie in the way a man carries himself, or in his mode of speech. The out ward trappings of sainthood have often been assumed by the hypo crite. The Communion of Saints has known fierce saints and fiery saints, gruff saints and homely saints, as w ell as those gentle, noble souls who more commonly come to mind when the ' word “saint” is uttered. No, you would not have called St. Peter the pious kind. One writer calls him the “Big Fisher man”. Often he must have had fish scales under his fingernails, and a smell of fish about his tunic. But God Incarnate, Who sees the soul, saw in Peter the qualities requisite for His first Pope. He named him the Rock, and built His ageless Church upon that foundation. We are proud that St. Peter is patron of our school. A patron saint exists as an example for his clients, and as an advocate before God through whom they seek the grace to follow that example. In our faltering way we try to see Peter as Christ saw him —- to find those qualities admired by the Son of God, and to develop them in ourselves.

faculty Peter may never have gone to school — he certainly was not a well-educated man. But Christ commanded h im : “Go, teach all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost,” and so he became a teacher, and gave all the years of his life to the fulfillment of this command. This sense of vocation, of a mission, characterizes our faculty, Jesuits and laymen both. Teaching for them is much more than breadwinning; many of them could win sweeter, richer bread in other careers. But they, like Peter, heeded the command of Christ. They bear witness to Christ, not as Peter did, in the synagogues and markets of the ancient Roman em pire, but in this far corner of the world that God has given them for their mission field. We are grateful to them: for their teaching, for their daily example, for their friendship.

senioRs Peter is a saint, but he wasn’t born a saint. The road to holiness is littered with debris a man casts aside on his pilgrim age: his weaknesses, betrayals, meannesses, love of self, until he can stand unencumbered before the throne of God. The gospel itself casts a hard white light on the faults in Peter’s character. And his sainthood is the result of his gradual triumph over these faults. We have moved through four years of our pilgrimage a pilgrim age.that we hope is bringing us to the same goal toward which Peter ever walked. With God’s- grace we have tried to slough off some of the encumbrances that keep us from advanc ing. The pinnacle of saintliness is still a very distant goal, but we pause in this turning of our road, our graduation, to thank God for the progress we have made in our four years sub um bra P etri.

And i will give thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven ...

un eRcUssmen 6

For three unforgettable years St. Peter was an underclass man, learning of the Kingdom of God at the feet of the Son of God. Before he could teach others, before he could become the shepherd of Christ’s flock, Peter had first to be taught. Underclassman — underdog — the hapless freshman or sophomore or junior sometimes thinks the words are synony mous. No one has ever devised any way to reach the top of a ladder except by starting at the bottom. St. Peter started there, and so .must Peter Prepster. Here we picture them as they stand on the first, second, and third rungs looking yearningly upward: our underclassmen.

activities Near as we are to the sea, we have no Anglers’ Club at St. Peter’s. If we did, and if St. Peter were a student here, he would surely he president. A Hiking Club would probably attract him too, for he trod many a long road in his life as Christ’s vicar. Catholic education is far more broad than the three R’s and their ramifications, and extra-curricular activities fulfill an im portant function in the rounding out of an educated Catholic gentleman. The educated man is a man who is interested in everything. He is a man who knows how to use, enjoy, and draw profit from his leisure time.

an6 whatever thou shalt Loose on eamh shall Be Loosed in heaven.

Sp O R tS The mantle of leadership which Christ laid upon the shoul足 ders of St. Peter weighed upon him like a cross. That cross has been carried by tbe successors of Peter through two millennia, and this year a new Pope has accepted that lonely, lofty office. In the Church and in the world the need for leaders is profound. The British claim that their leaders are trained on the playing fields of Eton. Who knows what future leaders first practiced that elusive art at Roosevelt Stadium or in Prep Memorial Gym?

The Petrean Spotter journeyed up to Oakland, New Jersey last September to survey the highly touted Prep eleven in pre-$eason practice. The St. Peter s foothall team seemed to have all the necessary requirements for a state championship and an undefeated season. The Prepsters scrimmaged with viciousness, speed and agility. Everything pointed to a good season. Came the first game, and the Petrean cleats pounded into Roosevelt Stadium and left their imprint on the throat of Snyder’s Tiger. Quarterback Wayne Zadanowicz headed the attack with his aerial artistry. “Z” launched satellites with payloads three times: once to Tyne and twice to Heidelberger. He shared one-yard plunges with Lou Rettino and let Bob Modarelli account for the extra points. When time ran out, the score read 34-0. , . a touchdown. ■»«««"»«

W ith one victory under its belt, the M arauder eleven journeyed to P h ila delphia for a tilt with St. Joseph’s Prep. The Joes boasted a star-studded line-up, but the Petreans boasted a team. Tackles Gronda and Contreras kept the backfield stars in the backfield, and Martore lli kept the linemen heroes wondering where he was going with the ball. Rettino set sail up the m iddle; “Z’ passed and ran for the other two. Score Peter’s 20, St. Joe’s 0.

Back from its victory in Philadelphia, the Maroon made its way to the Stadium to met Bayonne High School. This was the day for the Prep defense. Keeping the Bees in their own territory, the de fenders saw to it that the ball was always in Petrean hands and even let tackle Richie Gronda score his first touchdown. The varsity enjoyed the pleasure of a rest on the bench and the subs gloried in playing the second half from begin ning to end. At the gun it was 59-0.

All dressed up and no place to go.

Fresh from its victory over Bayonne, the Petreans ran head on into the Demarest Red Wings—and bowled them over. The line showed its power in this game with standout performances by Tony Bianciella and Frank Vincent, the Prep guards. Halfback Jim Kropke showed some dazzling running, too. This was a warm-up for the next game with Hackensack, a team as highly rated as the Prep and boasting more impressive offensive statistics. Post warm-up score, 57-0.

This was the game! St. Peter’s was undefeated, untied, and unscored upon; Hackensack was undefeated, and had scored 141 points while yielding only 7. The Marauders again showed their distaste for statistics by smashing “fabu lous” B ill Harris and his teammates into, the mud. Wayne Zdanowicz’s arm and Lou Rettino’s legs led the offense; Joe Contreras, Jim Richardi, Richie Brzenk, and John Dow highlighted the defensive play. Prep waded off the field still un scored upon, 25-0.

Lincoln was the next victim for the Petrean machine. Although the Lions were able to hold the Prep until the last few minutes of the first half, they were no match for the Petreans after the Maroon had tasted blood. A touchdown, an onsides kick, and a pass made the score 14-0, Prep. In the second half, Jim Kropke took control of left tackle and sliced through to lead the team to 39-0 victory. Came cool November, and arch-foe Memorial. The Prep was ready for anything and was dying to taste Mem blood. They did just that, playing a possession b all game, moving the b all up and down the gridiron. The Petreans yielded the air lanes to Memorial, how足 ever, and with them the first two touchdowns of the

Thanksgiving day and the Turkey were beckoning to St. Peter. Peter promptly dispatched eleven of his men with orders to slaughter a Dickinson Ram in lieu of a turkey. “Fabulous” Joe Perrenod found out that all fables are not true. Although he found it easy to roll up a fair amount of yardage, he could do it only in the second half with the Petreans playing deep to pro tect their lead. Phlying Phil Martorelli phlashed his phorm as he ran all over the Rams. For his excellent maneuvering, Martorelli received the Meyers trophy as outstanding player. Center John Dow was voted MVP for St. Peter’s, and Tony Appruzzesse received the Dick inson MVP. Bob Strangia picked up a Prep fumble to score the lone Ram TD. Just before Turkey Dinner tim e: Prep 27, Ram 7.

W ith the Dickinson game the Prep woum tip its most successful season, its only undefeatei season. Coach B ill Cochrane’s charges brough home the state title again to its proper residenc on Grand Street. Coach Cochrane was also vote* coach of the year by the New York Daily New* Ten of the starting eleven are destined to b playing college football next year. Only junio W ayne Zdanowicz remains for next year. Of th< regulars, halfbacks P hil Martorelli, Jim Kropke and Joe Cassidy, fullback Lou Rettino, defensiv back and P-A-T booter Bob Modarelli, end B arry Tyne and John Heidelberger, tackle

W ally Muel ler and halfbacks Kelly and Curley w ill be the only other backs left of the old team. Almost everyone w ill be in college, but B ill Cochrane w ill come up with another good team—perhaps another State Champion. He’s that kind of a coach.
