DEDICATION

Faces can portray dignity, meditation, concern and dedication. They can even portray love - especially love. These are the many faces of Father Thomas P. Murray, S.J. Father Murray attended Regis High School and, after having entered the Society of Jesus in August 1922, graduated from Woodstock College. On June 23, 1935, Father was ordained and, in 1937, he was assigned to Saint Peter’s Prep. Over the past thirty-six years, he has taught freshman Latin and English, as well as Religion, to literally thousands of Prep students. On this, the fifty-first anniversary of his entrance to the Society, we dedicate this book WQudlv. confident that the generations to whom he has dedicated his life will remember Father always. Thank you, Father Murray!

Seated: John Sogliuzzo, Secretary-T reasurer.

This year’s Student Council was influential in several innovations and new projects that combined to make life a little more pleasant here at Prep. The ping-pong and pool tables along with the television and the soda machine brought unknown comfort to the Senior Room. The senior projects were extended to several new fields and the independent study program was opened up to many more students. Exemptions were given more freely and a new marking system was introduced. The changes made with the help of the Student Council were not radical, but they were something to talk about.

Chris Colford, Chairman o f the Publicity Committee, had an easier job with the Committee than expected because of a loyal and competent staff. Composed o f four seniors, eight juniors, tw o sophomores, and one freshman, the staff published almost twenty bi-weekly High School Set columns in the Jersey Journal and a few similar copies in the Bayonne Review. The Committee was Prep’s connection with the outside world in handling the school’s public relations with the local newspapers.

Speakers’ Bureau

Ed Rebbert, Speakers’ Bureau Co-Chairman In the past few years, Prep’s freshman year enrollment has shown a slight increase due to the success of the Speakers’ Bureau. This past year’s Bureau, with Co-Chairmen Ed Rebbert and Chris Colford, visited grammar schools not only in Jersey City but also in several other nearby cities. Grammar school students saw eighty different slides of all parts of 144 Grand Street, and they also questioned our representatives about the many curricular, extra-curricular, and social aspects of the Prep. Left to right, back row: Carl Fuardo, Fred Zalewski, Kevin McCarthy, Paul Cavaliere, Matt Cavaliere, Chris Colford, Kevin Collins, John Gaddis. Front row: Charles Pfeifer, Ken Albers, Bill Swellick, Tom Calvanico, Mike Holt.

Photography Staff

L eft to right: Vin Stagnitto, Giuliano Giudici, John Montoro, Steve Tochko, Bill Bricki, Joe Pastuzyn, Mark Gierla.

The purpose o f this activity, besides that o f promoting the art of photography as a hobby, has been to provide a reliable source of photographs for the various school publications. If it were not for the devoted efforts of the staff, this book would certainly not have been published. The weight of responsibility was shouldered by Bob Gerrity and Giuliano Giudici.

Political Forum

Misters Harz and Casey listen to skilled interpretations.

The Political Forum, moderated by Mr. Steven Harz, conducted discussions during the year on current political and social topics. These include Women’s Lib, cinema pornography, and the John Birch Society. The discussions were open to all Prep students and girls from neighboring academies.

The beautiful music flowing from the Resource Center many afternoons comes from no other source than the band. This group of dedicated musicians provides the music for all of Prep’s football games and rallies. The culmination of the band’s yearly activities was the annual Spring Concert on April 14. Former Prep student Mr. A1 McCormick conducts the band and Fr. Joseph Kavanagh is the moderator. Seniors Joe Colaneri and Jerry Verpent are president and vice-president respectively.

One of the newer activities at Prep this year was WSPP, our own closed-circuit television station. Under the leadership of Fr. David Stump, S.J., and with the help of student staffers, the “studio” used its facilities to tape football, basketball, track, gym, soccer, and wrestling events, as well as several educational series such as “America” and “Our Vanishing Wilderness.” In the future WSPP hopes to greatly expand its activities and to further explore the creative abilities of its members. This year’s Social Committee under the direction o f Pat Cleary, promoted several successful “nights out." The film forums were excellent and the entertainment superb. A new venture, a coffee-house co-sponsored by St. Al’s Academy, was a great social success. The extracurricular night life at Prep was kept going strong thanks to the Social Committee.

The Higher Achievement Program is a most unique activity here at Prep. It enables students to help underprivileged eighth-graders in the area to prepare for the high school extrance exam. This gives the Prep student a feeling of fulfillment and gives the younger boy a chance at gaining entrance to Prep which he might never have had. Fr. John Browning, S.J., is the director of HAP.

In December o f ’72, the Petroc ran the first o f its many successful contests, The Jelly Bean Counting Contest. The number, by the way, was 1447. Prep’s school newspaper, the Petroc, is one o f the most active publications at Grand and Warren, having distributed seven issues this year. Under the leadership o f editor-in-chief and Jersey Journal Staffer o f the Year, Leonard Pasculli, and moderated by Mr. Kevin Bradt, S.J., the newspaper expanded itself to become more than a mere reporter of school news. Early in the year, the Petroc ran a series o f editorials questioning and challenging curriculum and administrative policies, which might very well have been the impetus behind recent changes in the educational processes at Prep. In addition to running the usual articles, features, and reviews, the Petroc also initiated various contests, polls, and the First Annual High School Spelling Bee in Jersey City. In March, Mr. Bradt drafted many of the Petroc staffers to assist him in the Annual Lenten Mission Drive, thus concluding a very productive year for the Petroc.

SPELLING BEE

The tension o f the Bee is evident as Steve Zakrzewski ponders his word.

On February 12, 1973, the Petroc sponsored the First Annual High School Spelling Bee open to Prep students and neighboring girls’ academies. Created by editor Leonard Pasculli, the Bee attracted forty-four contestants and an appreciative audience. Winner Cathy Bohannon from St. Dom’s was awarded a $50 Bond, while runner-ups Regina Murphy (Holy Family) and Jackie Walsh (St. Dom’s) each received a $25 Bond.

DRAMATICS This year the Dramatics Society underwent a large change in that it acquired a new director, Mr. John Casey, and a new moderator, Mr. Thomas Maus, S.J. This new team’s first effort was a production of Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur’s Classic, “ The Front Page.” For six long weeks the cast worked to get down their lines and cues. Their work was not in vain though, because, as usual, the show was a success. The two lead roles were played by Ray Schultz and Dave Lodge with help from Fran Plonka, Mike Lopez, Bill Ruane, and Joe Lane.

Mrs. Grant (Kathy Doody) makes a grand entrance.

Not content to rest on the laurels of its earlier success, the Dramatics Society came up with a novel twist for its spring production. This time they performed Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town” in the cafeteria with the audience viewing the action from three sides instead o f only one. For this production, the lead was held by Joe Lane, as the stage manager, w ith Pete Brewer, Elaine Potwardoski, Paul Diverio and Mike Lopez, Karen Weiss, and Barbara Jo Bruning portraying the Gibbs and Webb families respectively. Both performances were well received by the audience, and provided a fitting climax to the year.

The task of this year’s Petrean staff was a difficult one. They had to surpass the success of last year’s book. Coming in on Saturdays and holidays, the staff worked hard to meet deadlines and to achieve the ultimate end — The 1973 Petrean. The book once again highlights every phase of Prep life from religious to academic to social. The staff hopes that the book is truly representative of the spirit of Prep and that the class o f ’73 will be proud of it.

Christinas, 1972 Christmas is a time to remember the very reason for Christmas. Just before the vacation, faculty and students gathered in St. Peter’s Church to offer the Eucharist in joy and thanksgiving. No small part of the liturgy was the student offering of food and presents to the newborn King and needy families. Many poor children were ready to “jump for joy” at the sight of Prep contributed gifts. “All you people clap your hands.”

The First Time For the first time in the history o f the Jesuit order (well over 400 years), the Father General came to visit St. Peter’s Prep and Church on November 11, 1972. Since it was a Saturday, Father Pedro Arrupe could not see the Prep in action, but he did meet many faculty, alumni, and friends of St. Peter’s. After a luncheon in the cafeteria and benediction in the church, Father General left for a concelebrated mass at St. Aedan’s Church, Jersey City.

MOTHERS’ CLUBS Thank you! Both of these clubs have been most generous in supporting the Prep during the past year with their moral and financial assistance. All the fund raising activities such as the card party, the horse races, the prize fights have all helped to swell the Prep coffers. To all Dads and Moms, the seniors and all the Prep family say: Thanks a thousand times!!! Step up and take a chance!

FOOTBALL

This was the year that was to be for the Prep Varsity Football squad. “Old pros, like Malavarca and Gaddis, along with seniors who were relatively new to the Varsity scene, like Grant and Cochrane, combined with underclassmen stalwarts, like Robinson and the Mina twins, to produce an impressive grid team. Soph quarterback Jim Wolowitz was the talk o f the town in pre-season as it was upon his shoulders County hopes would depend. After some strong early season victories over Memorial, Marist, and Hoboken, the Prep eleven seemed to be on their way to the Crown. A heartbreaking loss to County Champs North Bergen, however, cancelled those hopes. The team was superior on defense; they chalked up three shutouts and allowed an average o f less than seven points a game. Cheers! The cheerleaders began practicing early in September under the direction of Miss Haggerty and their work was well worth the effort. Their spirit led the teams on through both the wins and the losses. The girls’ never dying enthusiasm inspired even the most apathetic fans. It was a year of victory, defeats, and memory for the girls . . . it’s hard to believe it’s over. We thank them!

On Januray 3, 1973, wrestling, a new Prep sport was christened, under the direction of Fr. Edwin Leahy the former St. Benedict’s coach. Prep faired well in its first showing but lost in the final round. To no-one’s surprise, however, this young Prep squad could not handle the veteran teams in the state and finished the season with a poor record. However, the team looks forward to next season with this year’s standouts Fred Smith, Virgil Griffith, Davy Jones, and Ed Gunnell all returning.

Having been formed by a group of interested students, the soccer team is another addition to the Prep sports scene. The unity and desire of the team, which was coached by Brother Tom Daly, S.J., and Ron (“Rock”) Prezioso (’68), is not accurately displayed by the overall record of 2-13-2. The two wins were over Hudson Catholic, and both ties were scoreless struggles against St. Al’s and Hoboken.

GYMNASTICS The St. Peter’s Gymnastics Team began this season with high hopes, four experienced seniors, and a new coach, Mr. Granger Servance. As the season progressed, it became apparent that Prep was one o f the state’s powerhouses. The team, led by graduating seniors Joe Cocciardi, Gary ' Cardiello, Tony O’Gorman and Captain Bill Mueller, finished the regular season undefeated in county competition, and with an overall record o f 13-5.

This year, due to the hard work o f the coaches, Joe DiTuro and Vin Pickett, and the efforts o f captains Bill DiTuro, Dan Lenehan, and Greg Wroclawski, the Prep swimmers finished the year with a most respectable record. The team was undefeated in the city duel meets, taking Dickinson, Ferris, Hudson Catholic, Snyder and Lincoln by decisive scores. Prep finished the season with an overall record of 8 wins and 4 losses. The biggest disappointment came in the City Championships in February as Prep finished second to Dickinson by a mere four points. In the Counties, Prep out swam Dickinson by fifteen points and scored a respectable fourth place. Page 164

The Karate Team became a Prep varsity sport in 1971. Members of the team compete on an intra-team basis, and also compete in Okinawan Karate Association Matches. Members generally participate in free sparring and fighting technique forms, and practice faithfully every Saturday. The coaching staff is headed by Warren Martin and Gary Martin.

Although football would probably be considered the focal point o f Prep sports, varsity basketball teams have certainly been consistently productive for quite a period of time in the annals o f Prep history. This year was no exception as the Maroon Marauders played well, however, in spurts, as the squad finished at 9-16. The team started out a little slow; even impressive Christmas Tournament victories over Qiffside Park and Teaneck could not get the Prepsters on track, as they slipped to a number o f defeats among a few scattered wins. However, a determined club salvaged the season by picking up some decisive victories in two post-season tournaments before being eliminated. Seniors Jim Reid, Jim Cochrane, Tom Lally, and Frank Cioffi led the way most of the season, while juniors Ronnie Robinson and Mark Bonner are expected to boost the team’s league standing for coach Jerry Halligan once again next year.

CHESS TEAM

The Prep chess team once again proved its perennial strength by taking trophies in all the top events of the year. Without a doubt, the chess team is one of the most successful teams at St. Peter’s. The team captured the Hudson County Championship and the New Jersey State High School Team Championship. In the Eastern Divisional Tournament, St. Peter’s finished a close second among seventy other teams.

Mr. Joseph McCaffery With the arrival of the new year 1973, an integral part of Prep life was missing. Mr. Joseph A. McCaffery, known by the administration and students as the Assistant to the Prefect o f Discipline and the Moderator of the Radio Club, had retired. Every St. Peter’s graduate of the past three decades could claim the distinguished honor of having his name read out by that silver-haired man with the raspy voice. “Joe,” as he was affectionately called, could always be seen in the locker rooms and the elevator as he traveled from his desk to the Radio Club. Whenever students had a problem, they could rely on Mr. McCaffery’s help. From locker trouble to outright brawls, “Joe” was always on the scene. No voice will ever fully replace that of Mr. Joe McCaffery, a voice which commanded respect even from the cockroaches. We, here at Prep dedicate this page to the monumental man who became a tradition of this school, and whose goodness will live on as long as there are students at St. Peter’s. With all due respect to Joseph A. McCaffery, “That is All.”

P a r tin g N o t e s

The end of this book marks the end o f our four years of Prep life. They were fou,r good years — of making friendships, of growing within ourselves, of molding the sort of persons who are ready to step into the world with confidence. As we embark upon newer pastures, we must remember that what Prep has taught us, about ourselves and about our relationships with others, will be of service to us only if we make it so. The Petrean editors bid a fond farewell to Prep and offer their classmates many good wishes in their future endeavors.
