It has been a trad ition here at Saint P e te r’s Prep to ded icate the P E T R E A N to a teacher w h o deserved this honor. T h is year w e con sid ered m an y p ossib ilities but w e fe lt w e should d edicate the 1976 P E T R E A N to a v e ry special student o f this y e a r’s graduating class, a person w h o has e x e m p lifie d strength and b ra very far b eyon d anyone w e h ave com e to k n o w during our fou r years here and throughout our lives. O v e r the past fou r years, John N e a lo n has u ndergone num erous operation s and treatm ents fo r cancer and has been h o sp ita lized fo r m an y months. Y e t John has sh ow n an enorm ous am ount o f courage; an exam p le w e can all learn from . T h is courage has kept him going. T h ere is so m uch you can say about a person and frien d w h o has taught us the real m eaning o f life. Yet, w e h op e through w h at w e 'v e said, his exa m p le w ill be an inspiration fo r all o f us. spared any physical suffering thro u g h his long illness and remained conscious and cheerful to the
tu m o r on the o p tic nerve. His superiors sent him to Fordham Law School, since there was dou b t th a t he w ould be able to continue his studies fo r
very end. His bod y reposed in the Chapel at St. Peter's and the funeral Mass o f the Resurrection was celebrated in St. Peterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Church, w ith eighty priests concelebrating. The eulogy, preached by Fr. Charles Dolan, S.J., w ho w orked w ith Father Shalloe and succeeded him as m oderator o f the A lu m n i, is here prin te d , since there are so many w ho have w ritte n expressing th e ir regrets th a t they did n o t kno w o f his death in tim e to attend his funeral. H e â&#x20AC;&#x2DC; is buried in the Jesuit Cemetery at A uriesville, N .Y ., the Shrine o f the Jesuit Martyrs o f N o rth Am erica. The fo llo w in g week a Mass was celebrated at St. Michael's Church in B uffalo, N .Y ., fo r the friends and relatives who were not able to come to Jersey C ity . There were several hundred in attendance at th a t Mass in Father s home tow n. He is survived by fo u r devoted sisters, all living in the B u ffa lo area. the priesthood. He received the degree o f D octor o f Law fro m Fordham in 1929 doing much o f the w o rk towards the degree w hile teaching at F o rd h a m P re p . A n o p e ra tio n stayed the deterioration o f his eyesight and he continued his Theology Studies at W oodstock College and was ordained in 1932. His firs t assignment as a priest was to Grand Street, as assistant Dean at the new St. Peter's College. A fte r tw o years in this post he was named Principal o f St. Peter's Prep, remaining in th a t position fro m 1935 to 1943, when he was appointed Guidance Counsellor and A lum ni D irector.
