FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE
The students here at St. Peter’s Prep come from various communities and innumerable ethnic backgrounds. There is no typical Prep man. Each student is unique in his own ways. Some arrive at school by bus or train, others by car or on foot. This variety extends to personalities at Prep. The personalities en courage self-expression and individuality. Each student brings into the Prep community certain cultural and personal exper iences, distinctive to himself, to share with everyone. It is this open atmosphere at St. Peter’s which permits students to discov er new interests and latent talents.

BRIDGING A GAP
LOOKING TOWARDS THE FUTURE
As graduates look back upon their four years at St. Peter’s, they come to realize why this institution is called a “ Preparatory School”. The opportuni ties open to students upon graduation are as numerous as the lights in the New York City skyline. With this in mind, the Prep community attempts to prepare students for the “real world” outside of high school. A core of tradi tional academic studies is enlivened with explorations into modern technol ogy. It is hoped that this balance be tween the classics, such as Latin, and new fields of study, such as Computer Science, will better prepare Prep men for their futures.
DEDICATION ’85
That time has Come again to honor a man whom we truly think deserves our praise. This individual exemplifies what a man is. He is our friend, teacher, advisor, and sometimes friendly adversary. He is a person with character. It is displayed in his ability to interact with the students on our level. He understands. He listens. He advises. A Prep graduate from the early seventies, this teacher can be found daily in H 101. He is known for his extensive work in the HAP program, his endless hours spent in making a Prep dance “one more success, and also for coordinating an intramural program with much enthusiasm and intensity rivaled by none. In the classroom and out of it, he has taught students not only to read and write but also to respect one another. For this respect and for all the other qualities he has enhanced in us we are grateful. With these thoughts and sincere gratitude, We the Class of 1985, dedicate our Petrean to Mr. Thomas Biondo.

I have learned much in the last two years from my students. I have seen their generosity and con cern for others. I Tve seen students who were ‘followers’ become leaders.” Mr. M arty Doyle, S.J. “T he best m ethod to learn a subject is to teach th a t subject. The best ‘subject’ to teach is a Prep student.” Mr. R obert Mulvihill “Teaching is m ore than an occupation. It is a vocation, a calling to participate in molding the future o f the world. PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB All of P rep’s publications: Petrean, Petroc, and the Office of Public Infor m ation’s Prep magazine, owe a debt of gratitude to the Prep Photography Club. The C lub’s assistance is invalu able to their production. W ithout the dedicated work of photographers and printers, the photographic and artistic elements which highlight all St. Peter’s publications would not exist. The Club’s staff can often be seen scurrying around school, capturing Prep spirit on film. The leadership trium virate of ju nior Paul Grundling and seniors M i chael Ahern and Fran Sullivan, with the guiding hand of m oderator M r. M i chael Tunney, S.J., inspires all mem bers to work long hours after school on the third and a half floor of M ulry Hall.

ICHRISTIAN SER VICE The Christian Service program is another fine example of how students at St. P eter’s serve their communities. This one semester service project is coupled with a course on Social Justice, allowing juniors to see first hand the problems in our society while developing a sense of what m aturing Christians can do to help solve these problems. Students may choose where they will contribute their free time; choices range from assignments at hospitals and nursing homes, to tutoring gram m ar school and high school pupils. Christian Service is instrum ental in developing that part of a well-rounded j man which feels for the disadvantaged - this aspect of humanity is i essential to a true “m an for others. ; | j ; | ! : !

BAND
The 1984-1985 St. Peter’s Prep Band.
The St. Peter’s Prep Band is another example of what makes our school unique. The band pos sesses a wealth of talent and di versity. Students of all years, backgrounds, and musical tastes are given a chance to display and develop their musical abilities. The band, directed by Mr. Robert Sayer, is a two-fold exper ience. This adroit group of young musicians provides a variety of enjoyable music for assemblies, li turgies and other school events. It is also a graded course which fos ters an atmosphere conducive to learning and appreciating music.

There were disappointments this year, but there were also triumphs. The highlight of the season was the return of the Prep-Dickinson rivalry which had been put on hold for four years. The game was Homecoming for the Prep alumni and they were not disappointed. Dickinson was crushed by the Peter’s team, 20-0. The Jackie H yatt award was awarded to Joe DeM arco for his excellence and con tinued dedication to the team. The M araud ers ended the season with a 21-8 upset over Memorial. The offensive drive was sparked by underclassman standout Charlie Bible, and the defense was outstanding in a goal line stand keyed by Dan Hanifin and Kevin Bau man.

FRESHMAN FOOTBALL Under the guidance of Head Coach Paul Giorgio, and assistant Dave Hunt, the Freshman Football Team opened the season as defending County Champions. Although they failed to reclaim that honor this year, the team did post a respectable record and win a few big games. Most notable among them was the Memorial game where future varsity standouts Rob Schork and Mark Warobiej combined to hand previously unbeaten Memorial an 8 to 6 loss.

CHEERLEADING
|
This year marked the fifth year since the return of Prep’s Cheerleaders. These girls from local schools give a great deal of their time to keep Prep spirit at a constant high, whether at rallies or sporting events. The team this year was led by former Prep cheerleader Donna Donnavin and Cap tains Judy M ayer and Elaina M alaquias. The entire student body at Prep appreciates the dedication of these girls. It is for this reason that they are greeted at every rally with standing ovations and a roar of applause.

Prep’s J.V. Basketball team is undoubtedly the backbone which will uphold the Prep’s basketball tradition. Under the guidance and instruction of first year coach, Mr. Joe Della Fave, the team faced a tough season. However the team shined under standouts such as Dennis Corwin, Bill Cooney, and Mike Gallagher, who also saw Varsity time. St. Peter’s looks to these men to lead Prep basketball through the late eighties.
1985 FRESHMEN BASKETBALL This year’s Freshmen Basketball Team has broken tradition in many ways. Under the guidance of first year coach Joseph Massarelli, the frosh hoopsters have hustled and fought their way to respectability in the H.C.I.A.A. South Division. St. Peter’s will be able to bank their basketball future upon standouts such as Jason Monteforte, Joe Kealy and Paul Lempa. Through hard work and determination these players will be capable of bringing the brillance of the hardcourt to St. Peter’s once again. Left: First Row: J. Flanagan, M. Kenny, E. M artin, G . The Prep Indoor Track Team enjoyed a fine season this year under the guidance of second year coach Mike Burgess. The team practiced hard and was rewarded with some fantastic finishes. The team shined in the State Sprint M edley Relay with a strong fourth place finish. The relay was run by Kerry Fryczynski, Jason Richardson, Lamont Shipman and Vin Burke. In the Jesuit Mile Relay Kerry and Jason combined with Jim Peko and Steve Inn for a second place finish, which qualified them for the Penn R e lays. The freshmen 880 Relay also recorded an outstanding second place finish. With such a fine indoor season the team hopes for a strong outdoor performance.

While closing out our high school years, the 1985 Senior Class of St. Peter’s Prep would like to thank all our teachers for helping us to grow academically, spiritually and mentally. Yet at this juncture, we would especially like to thank those teachers who contributed in so many ways at the beginning of our tenure here at Prep, but are no longer with us. Though many of us did not have these teachers in class, these praiseworthy individuals seemed not only to extend their assistance within the classroom but also out of it. Our deepest and most sincere thanks goes out to Fr. Art Bender, S.J. who taught Latin 1 and Religious Ed. 2, often with timely wit and humor; to Mr. John Lloyd, who somehow kept his true identity (the Man of Steel!) from us all while broadening our horizons in the area of U.S. 2, to Mr. Louis Vavrina, thanks to him our French scholars were well-equipped for the trip to Paris; to Mrs. Cathy Dwyer, whose music classes enhanced our appreciation for the arts; to Mr. Tom Scirghi, S.J. for his religion courses which never fell short of excellence; to Fr. Harry Untereiner, S.J. whose constant lectures during sophomore year study hall brought new meaning to life; and to Mr. John Taeschler whose trend setting wardrobe and humorous Science 1 classes really started our Prep careers off on the right foot. To “ Mr. T” and all above we are truly thankful.
IN MEMORIAM Our graduation marks the end of one journey and the beginning of another. At this crossroads in our lives we pause to remember with gratitude the life of John Cingerana, Class of 1984, who walked with us along the road for awhile and whom the Lord called to himself last December 18, 1984. We remember John for his dedication and energy on the Business Staff of the Dramatic Society, his help with Petrean 84, for his care as a Big Brother to Freshmen and for his leadership and love as an Emmaus Team member. May all of us share in John’s spirit of service and care for oth ers. May John share in the eternal peace of our Lord.
