IN TH E Z O N E ... A heated class discussion. A touchdown scored with 2 seconds left on the clock, resulting in a win. The basketball play that ends with a resounding swoosh. A monologue delivered so poignantly that it brings tears to everyone’s eyes. The crack of the bat as the ball sails into oblivion. Speaking atop a truck in Times Square about an issue that really matters. The sound o f brilliance as everyone is in perfect harmony. The slap o f the puck that slides just past the goalie. The chant o f the ave at a pep rally. The fellowship o f an Emmaus retreat. Getting to the finish line a split second before your competitor does. Writing a paper that flows from thought, to pen, to paper. The community of friendship shared in the cafe, the classroom, the activity, the sport, the adventure. Time stands still and nothing else seems to matter. Concentration can be no greater. N othing can be stronger. Perfection is achieved. A feeling like no other.
You’re in th e zone, and you’re unstoppable. This is Prep!

“ ‘Offering our profound and discerning criticisms’ in Sir’s class really helped me to learn how to voice my opinions. I can remember when we were trying to unearth Hamlet’s problem and everyone was shouting what they thought. It was intense!” Whether it’s English I or AP English, the goal of the English department at St. Peter’s Prep is always the same —“To instill in the students a love for reading and a passion for writing,” as Dr. Kennedy says. Students gain appreciation not only for the English language, but for literature as well. Starting with the basics and moving on to more challenging works, students probe the literature of contemporary authors, esteemed American authors, and revered British authors. In the midst of this studying, students leam to express their thoughts and opinions concisely through completing writing assignments. Without a doubt, all students, after studying English for four consecutive years, leave with the quintessential ability of writing well. Undeniably, the English department at

PROBLfy “Looking back at my math studies over the past four years, I have come to realize that math just isn’t about numbers and mistakes - it’s about process and discipline of thought Once, in Mr. McDermott’s class, when we were going over homework, one student in the class didn’t get a problem. Everyone was shouting out the answer, and like an epiphany, he just got it. The whole class cheered.” Derivatives, combinations, equations, numbers ** math is about concentration, disciplined processes, and everyday | life. The mathematical journey begins with the groundwork - Algebra - and continues with the study of Geometry, Trigonometry, and Calculus. There is much versatility in the curriculum, and students have the opportunity to study m a n y different disciplines during their study of mathematics. Although math can be challenging and frustrating at first, it is ultimately rewarding in that it is pertinent to my applications of life. As Mr. Dadas says, “Math is a tool.”

“The first day of physics was amazing! I remember walking in the room and Fr. O ’Brien doing an experiment with a Hot Wheels car. I knew then that the year would be fun and interesting.” A solid foundation in the sciences is at the core of the Prep curriculum. With opportunities to learn through hands-on experiences, students gain insight into whatever it is they are studying, whether it’s biology, chemistry, physics, or geoscience. Dedicated teachers help students to understand the material and apply it. Ultimately, Prep students can take comfort in the fact that they will be prepared with the basic scientific knowledge that will help them in the future.

“I remember Dr. Scibilia asking us a tough question about the Second Vatican Council. No one knew what to say, but then, like lightening, everyone had their hands up. Doc didn’t even know who to call on.” Religion is an integral part of the Prep curriculum and tradition. From reading texts about the developments o f different religions to conversing about the societal implications o f Vatican II, Prep’s religion classes are very deep and thought provoking. Whether one is Muslim, Catholic, Hindu, or Jewish, all students are challenged to think critically and abstractly. Led by dedicated teachers, the religion department helps students to understand the importance of spirituality and faith.

“Everyone in the guidance department helped me to have a handle on my Prep career and really know where it’s going. They’ve really helped me to become a better student.” For one to truly be a “man for others,” one must know how to accept the help and support of others. The guidance department, whose purpose is to aid all students through their journey at Prep, enables students to do much: become adjusted, give help in times of need, offer solutions to problems, and guide students into college. Additionally, faculty mentors, who help to establish strong bonds with students, allow younger students to feel welcomed in a new place. Most importantly, the guidance department allows the students to grow into men o f competence, conscience, and compassion; the counselors do this through the respect they give to their students and help them to feel as though they are never alone.

State of the Art “Ms. Hellstrom’s ‘Introduction to Art’ class really helped me to realize my creative talent. Making a Japanese imprint at the end of the year really helped my artistic ability to grow.” Since the dawn of civilization mankind has searched for beauty in the world through the arts. Prep students continue this time-honored quest through taking advantage of the courses offered by the Fine Arts department. From freshmen learning the basic principles of ancient Greek painting and architecture to seniors tackling the abstract theory of music, the department helps students to understand and appreciate the world of art and music. By learning to appreciate the works of others, students learn to express themselves creatively. “Music and art, in my mind,” explains Mr. Steve Caslowitz, “allow students to gain a unique means to express themselves that they otherwise wouldn’t have.”

“Translating Latin was tough for me. I remember one class when I had to translate a passage and just couldn’t do it. Fr. Cregan and the rest of the class really helped me out, and when it was over, Fr. Cregan threw me a sour ball. It was worth it!” Latin is a cherished tradition at Prep. The Latin program provides students with skills they can use beyond the classroom. Not only does this classical language encourage students to think and reason logically, but it also enriches vocabulary and reading ability. In fact, Latin even helps most students to understand how English works. Fr. Cregan asserts, “Latin helps us learn about a culture that marked the beginning of Western Civilization.” In what other class would you be able to read Julius Caesar’s writings in their original text? Indeed, Latin is no dead language; it’s very much alive amidst these halls.

Vocabulary, lectures, poetry, song - modem foreign languages are a wealth of diverse cultures. In studying another language, students are able to express themselves in ways other than through the English language. Additionally culinary delights, foreign films, and international music are not uncommon in Prep’s halls. Students are given the power to be connected with the unknown and unfamiliar. As Mr. James DeAngelo says, the goal of the modem language department is to not only “learn the language, but to live it as one who is in the culture would.” Without a doubt, Prep’s modem language department enables students to do this.

It all started in training camp with Coach Rich Hansen hoping to improve on a great season last year. Thl philosophy of the team was to win, and the players camel into the season with great hopes and many expectations. I These were met and exceeded, although the team did fall short in the first round of the playoffs. The team thrived through the efforts of senior John Solan, running back, who proved to be one of the best in Hudson County, andl junior Joe Dailey, who is perhaps the best Prep quarterback in years. To complete a great offense were thl wide receivers, senior Javier Persad and junior Adam Sanl Miguel. In the past, there were key losses on the defense, but senior defensive end Alan Cody and senior outside linebacker Liam Moloney truly made up for it. Coach Hansen also came up with a couple of defensive gems in Rich Hansen, Jr. and freshmen Mike Brown. When all is said and done, Prep had its best seasoj since 1994. When most people hear the phrase “freshman football,” they often think o f sacrificing grades and schoolwork for yards and inches on the field. If such a person talked to Kevin Chester, they would hear quite the opposite. “I think that the football team has helped me succeed academically. My teammates really encourage me to do my best in school. I’ve noticed that the commitment I put into football is reflected in my schoolwork.” The game o f football at Prep truly fosters “Men for Others.” The freshmen team’s very respectable record of 4 and 4 was earned through hard work, discipline and sacrifice. During the season, players were seen practicing four days a week - some not returning home until 7:30 each night. It is this level o f sacrifice; this willingness to give up precious free time that makes the team truly shines. Algebra and JU G can be unfamiliar experiences to freshmen and the football seasons helped inspire the camaraderie required to adjust to these factors. Head Coach Rich Hansen, recendy named this season’s Coach of the Year, played a large role in helping players adjust. Said Kevin Chester: “Coach is a really funny guy; he helped me become a better student and football player.”

For More Than Just Kicks This year, Prep soccer went undefeated (9-0-2) in regular season play in the county and captured the coveted League tide. This feat has only been accomplished three times in Prep’s glorious history. In the end, Coach John Irvine was awarded the coach of the year for the third time in his career The success this year was attributed to the best defense in the entire county — Captain Nick Hamilton, Marek Dudziak, Sean LaFond, and Nick Tehlikian all brought different aspects to the team that meshed together to be impenetrable Prep’s two-goalie system of seniors Brett Prime and Tom Schmitt were awarded second team honors for their superb play The forward duo of workhorse players scored the majority of the team’s goals. Drew Buzzio’s season long sizzling play, which included nine game winning goals, put him among the elite in the county and a spot on the First team roster. Jesse Luis had six goals and four assists, and made him a constant threat as well as second team all county honors. Prep’s center midfield featured the never ending hustle of sophomore Pat Mellea and the tenacious play of Mike Rooney. The relentlessness of senior Gary Bogdanski and the blazing speed of Chris Caulfield created many chances and helped Prep with an offensive presence. The always pleasing to see play of senior Joe Battista, the vision of Marco Ambrosio, the physical of senior Dave Scudder, the defensive skills of Rob Komoroski, and the ambidexterity of Mike Mahoney gave Prep’s midfield a vast amount of support Varsity Soccer 39

The underlying purpose of the Junior Varsity program at Prep is to not only to prepare the athletes for when they join the Varsity team, but also to build a camaraderie and a love for the game and school. These goals were gready surpassed. Preps Junior Varsity soccer team had a disappointing five scheduled games cancelled this season, but when they got a chance to hear that whisde blow they never let up. The team was explosive scoring an average of 3.6 goals game and only letting up one a game. The offensive was catapulted by sophomore co-captain Paul Ascenio, who not only scored sixteen goals but also six assists. Also adding to the offensive firepower was the midfield, featuring the relentless hustle of sophomore Ed Ryan, and the ball skills of freshman Dan Hazard. Defense was spear ended by co-captain Todd Schild and by stand out goalie Ben Tamberella. The team had a strong grasp in the county, capturing the JV championship, and punished both Hudson Catholic and last years JV tournament winner Dickenson - twice a piece. Success is also imminent in the future as there are many core players that will thrive for Prep in the ensuing years.

Prep’s Junior Varsity basketball team embodied the admirable qualities of dedication and perseverance. From the beginning, first year head coach Collis instilled in his players a solid work ethic that stayed with the team the entire year. With decisive wins over a solid Lincoln squad and traditional rival Hudson Catholic, the Prep JV squad proved their unrelenting hard work. The team never stopped playing. Whether the team won or lost, Coach Collis never got down on his players, and always offered encouragement. Through early season challenges such as Memorial and Seton Hall Prep, the team gained vital experience, and demonstrated certain improvement at season’s end. The 2001-2002 wrestling season proved to be a definite success. Under the leadership of head coach Rick Gronda, assistant coaches Ed Roselle, Anthony Verdi, Mike Fusco, and PJ Rutkowski, the wresders grew from being talented individuals to forming a strong camaraderie as a team. Captain Mikael Zaki provided the leadership, experience, and guidance necessary to help the other players on the squad. The season began with four goals for the team: capture the win at Ridgefield Holiday tournament, the Brearly Team Tournament, Sectionals, and Districts. Ultimately, three of the four goals were met; through the efforts of Mikael Zaki, Frank Panella, Lawrence Fusco, and John Louf, first place victories were awarded to the team at Ridgefield, Brearly, and Districts. The wrestling team gave a solid performance at the sectionals as well, but did not come out on top. With a record of 15-5, the team hardly had an unsuccessful season. Truly, through the efforts of all, the squad performed best at all the crucial moments. As Mikael Zaki asserts, “as the season progressed, the team really developed great character, and we all felt a great bond.’'

The focus of the Cross Country team’s 2001 season was teamwork and development. This focus was challenged gready right from the beginning when senior co-captain Greg Gargiulo and diligent junior co-captain Donald Kovacs incurred serious season-ending injuries. More than ever, each runner was required to work as hard as he could and assist the others. Junior John Laracy truly exemplified the team’s focus on solidarity and improvement. His strenuous training j and friendly encouragement gave the team great leadership, motivation and earned him the vacant tide of captain. Together with head coach Mr. Mike Burgess and assistant coaches Ms. Lee Chua and Mr. Sean McCann, the team wa; poised to overcome adversity and gain victory. The team achieved this victory with first place finishes in the Jersey City and South Hudson Championships and respectable second place finishes in the County and Coach’s County Championships. The future of the team is extremely promising with every varsity member, save for Greg, returning next year. This includes hard-working and steadily improving juniors Dan Asis, John Laracy, Joe Pona, and prosperous sophomore Brian Lang and Brian Wilson. Speed. Stamina. Agility. All these words describe Prep’s 2002 Indoor Track team, which excelled at various events and was a very well rounded team. Returning Head Coach Mike Burgess and assistant coach Ms. Lee Chua brained and coached the team to success. Led by three captains, Chris Caulfield, Danny Asis, and Rob Komorowski, the team ran their way to a second place finish in the county relays. Paced by Greg Gargiulo, and one mile and twomile city Champ John Laracy, the distance team complemented the sprinters with fine performances throughout the season. The team excelled to a first place finish in the City Championships, with noticeable contributions from hurdler tom Palma and 4x4 runner Joe Danatzko. N ot only was this a memorable year for the team, but Captain Chris Caulfield broke a county record in the 400m race, previously held by Prep graduate James Souder. With all their accomplishments, one can only see this season as an astounding success, and as a sign of future achievement in seasons to come.

Prep’s Varsity Hockey Team surprised everyone but the team itself, as it posted one of the best seasons in recent memory. With great team chemistry and a fine blend of upperclassmen and underclassmen, the team played a tough schedule but still managed to finish with an impressive 138-3 record. Under the guidance of Head Coach Maione, the team gained state recognition, and a #18 ranking. Captains Tom McQuillan, Matt Ingles, and Pat Murphy led by example for the underclassmen. Pat Murphj who underwent season ending surgery, showed the camaraderie of the tead by still attending games despite his physical condition. Brett Prime was electric behind the goal, and was a key factor in Prep’s playoff run. Perhaps the most memorable game o f the season came when Prep defeated Bayonne, completing a major upset and dethroning last year’s state champs. 2002 was clearly a landmark season for Prep hockey, as the}! established themselves as a force on the ice.

Asking. Reaching out. Celebrating. St, Peter’s Prep is more than simply a high school —it is a home for those who live, attend, and work in it. The community of Prep is felt both at the school and yet beyond Grand and Warren. The cafeteria, retreats, service projects —all serve as opportunities for students, faculty, and administrators alike to join together in interdependence. Ultimately, Prep is a community It is one that gives - instilling academic, athletic, and spiritual virtues; one that receives - generations of Prep almuni continuously contributing to the whole of the community, one that guides - affording students many opportunities to excel to their potential, and one that grows - new students, faculty, and administration as well as new buildings constandy shaping and nourishing the great community simply known as Prep.

Serving as a weekend o f introspection and spiritual growth, Emmaus has always been a memorable experience for all those juniors and seniors able to make the retreat. Although this year saw the shift of the Emmaus Retreat House from Sea Bright to Felician Retreat Center, the retreat continued to foster a sense o f community; truly bonding juniors and seniors together as brothers. Through preparing dinner together, sharing meals, singing songs and just being themselves, students were able to experience God in all things — especially each other. One junior who made Emmaus remarked, “Before the experience, I didn’t really feel as if I knew my friends and the other guys in my junior class, but now I not only feel closer to them, but feel as if I know myself better.” Emmaus has long been a tradition at Prep. The unique retreat experience was brought to Prep by Fr. Ned Coughlin, who later went on to spread it to other Jesuit schools. Emmaus had evolved since then, yet its essence and spirit remain the same. This is exemplified in the Alumni who return to Prep to serve as Emmaus team leaders. This not only gives them the chance to rekindle their Emmaus sprit, but also bond with Prep students and faculty. Indeed, Fr. Azzarto and the 28 senior team leaders’ efforts throughout the year to help organize the retreats were not the least in vain: the Emmaus experience proved, as it always has, Prep’s commitment to fostering a sense of friendship, community, and faith.

iK i Sixty hours o f Christian Service is required for one to graduate from Prep. While this may appear daunting to many sophomores and juniors at first, most come to the important conclusion that time is meaningful when it comes to bettering both individuals and the community. Volunteer “immersion” trips took place during the summer months. Students traveled to specific sites for several days to immerse themselves in one o f many communities, including Camp Roque Gonzalez in upstate New York, L’Arche Daybreak in Ontatio, Glemary in Kentucky, YSOP in Manhattan, and Loaves and Fishes in West Virginia. Additionally, local service projects took place during the summer and the school year, and included the Immaculate Conception school After-Care program, the Ironbound Senior Citizen Center, and York St. Project. Ultimately, many sophomore and juniors finish their service requirement with a sense o f accomplishment, because their sacrifices really do change the lives of others for the better.
Christian Service 63
M ass A ppeal The Liturgical services here at Prep allow all students to come together as one community. Students of different faiths contribute to the diversity that makes Prep such a special place. Prayer sessions and Masses for Holy I Days let students develop spiritually, away from the classrooms and athletic fields. This year, the Thanksgiving prayer service featured a video produced by T. V. Studio entitled “In Good Company. This thought provoking production focused on student accounts of their religious experiences after September 11*. The video was received well by the Prep community, and undoubtedly succeeded in spreading a message of peace and harmony. Other prayer services gave students spiritual guidance through tough times. Chaplain Father Azzarto, with help from Sister Frances and Mr. Matt Greeley, handled the challenging task of I organizing these events. Eucharistic Ministers from Prep’s own student body gave their help throughout the year as well. Ms. Lisa Cataldo blessed the audience with graceful music, and aroused enthusiasm by encouraging crowd .

Usually the summer o f seventh grade is spent playing video games while sitting on the couch at home. However, for a select number of kids this normally tedious time is occupied with exciting intramural sports competitions along with stimulating intellectual exercises. These fortunate children received this opportunity at St. Peter’s Prep during the summer of 2001 in the Higher Achievement Program. Dedicated and compassionate Prep students volunteered in HAP as mentors, providing the young children with a different type of guidance; one where children are taught by teenagers who can relate to the difficulties of adolescence. The purpose of the program is consistent with the Prep philosophy of expanding students’ horizons by exposing them to an equal amount of sports [and academics. The HAP mentors assisted the young ones in subjects like Algebra and English, while refereeing and conducting sports like soccer and dodge- ball. However, an intricate program as this one could not have ran as smoothly as previous years without the leadership of adult teachers and Mr. John Irvine. All these components brought together another wonderful year of the Higher Achievement Program.

For two weeks, the Italian students attended Prep classes, toured New York City and Washington D.C, and spent time ] with their host families. During the end o f the exchange, all enjoyed a farewell dinner for the Italian students at the Spirito Grill in Weehawken. In June, the Prep members of the exchange spent two memorable weeks in Rome. There, students did things both individually, as each shared in the experience of living with a host family, and communally. All had the opportunity to follow the path o f St. Ignatius and visit Jesuit churches, tour the piazzas and monuments, be blessed by I the Pope, and experience Ancient Rome. Mr. David Soscia, former Latin teacher at Prep, proved to be an asset to the I exchange, as he shared his knowledge of the historical sites and functioned as an informative tour guide. In addition to visiting local sites, members o f the Prep exchange traveled to Naples, where they stayed in a retreat home, Pompei, II and Capri. Truly, everyone experienced firsthand the culture of Italy. All in all, there were great sites, great food, hospitable families, and gelato! Each site and activity left an imprint on everyone that will remain for years to come.

^ Christmas Storj, On December 18, 2001, Prep played home to a Christmas party for the students of St. Ignatius School in the Bronx. In a true demonstration of Prep spirit, students from different years gathered to create a festive and merry atmosphere for everyone present. Through fundraising efforts and dedicated volunteering, the party was a clear success. Pioneered by Sr. Marie Frances, the St. Ignatius Christmas Party is just one of the ways Prep men personify the attitude “Men for Others”. Hopefully this can become a tradition for years to come in the Prep community. One senior with an integral part o f the party, remarked “At the end of the night, gifts were presented to the students as smiles came across their faces. The St. Ignatius students were not the only ones to receive presents, though, as faculty and students responsible for the event were able to witness the Christmas joy they had spread.”

Activities are a cornerstone at Prep through which students develop their own unique talents. Teachers dedicate their time to moderate the various cocurriculars that aid in the growth of the whole person. From chess to the CLC, Petroc to Pax Christi, forensics to the French club, Prep calls for students to strive for excellence beyond the classroom. Yet, activites are not just opportunities for one to reach for the best, but provide all with an outlet from the academic experience. Above all, they are most undoubtedly enjoyable and freeing. The work done, relationships forged, and efforts achieved all reveal one true fact: participation outside the classroom fosters a conscientious community.

From January 4th-6*, The Roy Irving Theatre at St. Peter’s College was turned into a medieval setting for this year’s Prep drama, Romeo and Juliet. Students from Prep collaborated with those from four other local schools to make the performance a memorable one. Under the direction of Mr. Jack Campion, the cast practiced for months in advance in preparation for the play, and the hard work clearly paid off. Luke Kloza, who played Romeo, gave a moving performance. John Fedors and Dan Pacilio, Mercutio and Tybalt, portrayed their famous fight scene brilliandy. All members of the cast made solid contributions to the overall success of the play. The audience, mesmerized by the elaborate costumes and realistic action, went home happy, and gave the cast a well deserved standing ovation. Overall, Romeo and Juliet was a shining success, and students, family, and friends alike are glowing with anticipation for next year’s winter drama.

Behind the scenes, the Stage Crew is responsible for the elaborate and beautiful scenery witnessed in Prep’s Drama and Musical. The transformation o f St. Peter’s College into medieval Verona can only be credited to the diligent Stage Crew members. Led by moderators Glenn Chen and Eric Oldmixon, the staff of Stage Crew can be found day in and day out downstairs perfecting their masterpieces. A collaboration o f freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, Stage Crew undertook many difficult projects that required long days and sometimes nights at Prep. One Junior remarked, “I didn’t realize how hard they worked until the night that I went to the play. The landscape was truly amazing. The Walk-a-thon is the single fund-raising event used to support the school and its purpose is to help others in need. The Walk-a-thon committee, headed by Mr. Gomez for the last five years, decided to donate to relief funds for the victims o f the World Trade Center attacks. This year Mr. Gomez had a vision o f using the Walk-a-thon to turn the sorrow into something positive. It gave students others a chance to be unified in a good cause. This year over $94,000 was collected and $60,000 was donated. This was possible through the ninety-nine percent participation o f Prep students, who donated an average donation o f $112. The Walk-a-thon was also a day o f fun and relaxation. There was a dunk booth, a playstation tournament, and even an obstacle course. It was a day o f opportunities to give something more. The Prep Band this year was a part of both the school and the local community like no other activity. Playing at the football games, the Pep Rallies, a groundbreaking in Jersey City, a Christmas concert, and a Spring musical, not to mention a prestigious competition in Staten Island, the band lent their skills and exhibited their abilities in many venues. This year, many new players lent their talents to the band, as well as a new teacher, Mr. Zutfeld, who instructed brass students. Despite losing many members to Graduation last year, the band performed some of “the hardest songs we’ve ever tried” as stated by Mr. Caslowitz. This resulted in nothing but success. All o f the students, led by a strong group of leaders, specifically president Joe Pacilio, vice-president Chris Delaney, treasurer Andrew Boryszewski, and secretary David Velasco. Each had a clear passion for performance and that was clear in every note. All in all, whether it meant coming in on the weekends or just the normal hour before school every day, the band worked tirelessly to sound the best that they could, day in and day out.

The Spirit Committee has been running strong for several years under the guidance of Father Hoag. Every Monday after school, the Spirit Committee meets in Father Hoag’s room to discuss slogans and paint banners for the current week’s sporting events. These banners, sporting catchy slogans, are posted in the school cafeteria in efforts to encourage school spirit, hence the name Spirit Committee. The Spirit Committee runs the Marauder elections, and appoints the Henchmen for each school year. The Spirit Committee organizes the sports rallies for each season. At the Fall Sports Rally, the Marauder and Henchmen are introduced to the crowd. At each sports rally, the teams for each respective season are introduced. An event always looked forward to at the rallies is the Marauder and Henchmen engaged in mock battles with fellow classmates dressed as students from rival schools. These rallies encourage Prep students to come out and support their fellow classmates. The hard work of the Spirit Committee on rallies and banners spurs the Prep community to attend Prep sporting events. The Marauder and Henchmen, in costume and faces painted, attend Prep games to lift the crowd’s spirit, often through unique cheers. The Spirit Committee continues to be a staple in the Prep community and will be for years to come.

The Petroc, Prep’s student-run newspaper, enjoyed another successful year. Objectively covering the school’s most important events, the staff of the Petroc worked long hours preparing informative and interesting articles. This year’s newspaper was under new supervision with moderator Ms. Kaija Dewitt. Led by editors Drew Sheeran, Mike Monteleone, and Evan Miller, the Petroc was under strong leadership. Drew Sheeran commented on the commitment o f the many reporters and photographers who act as the eyes and ears of the Prep community. “The year’s success is due to the dedication of the students who put themselves into each article they write, making the Petroc the printed voice of our school.” Ms. Dewitt enjoyed her first year working with the paper and looks forward to a younger staff of editors next year. Ultimately, the staff and editors of the Petroc provided for the student body a truly great publication.

The struggle for social justice is demonstrated throughout the classrooms at Grand and Warren. Prep’s chapter o f Pax Christi, an international organization that follows the examples o f Christ, carries such Jesuit ideals beyond the classroom. Moderator Dr. Dom Scibilia noted I that the group’s goals include “a commitment to making peace and justice, both at Prep and in national and global communities.” Strengthening tn I spirit o f the group are periodic meetings at which members pray and discuss social issues. Following its theme o f “beyond tolerance toward respect,” Pax Christi hosts and contributes to many events throughout the community to gain awareness and equality. Such events include memori I services for September 11, a forum on Islam, the Thanksgiving Prayer Service, the Arrupe Lecture, the Good Friday Peace Walk, and symposiums o I racism and sexuality. Prep’s chapter o f Pax Christi also answers the call for Gospel justice in behind-the-scenes efforts to benefit the community. Members donate their time by delivering lunches to the hungry, making trips to the Hoboken Food Shelter, or even spending weekends at the YSOP homeless shelter program. Senior Drew Sheeran described such events as “a way to feel good about yourself for possibly making a difference in the I world.” This year, Prep’s chapter gained national recognition as its members spoke at the National Pax Christi Fall Conference and presented their views on justice to the Sider Institute at Messiah College. Dr. Scibilia, moderator, sums the group’s actions up as “what Prep is all about.”

It’s no secret that some Prep guys just can’t shut up. Forensics has given these students the opportunity to talk III they w ant... and be heard. Under the guidance of its Lew moderator, Ms. Karrie Rinder, and co-captains Farhan Malik and Joe Pacilio, the team was able to steadily Improve over the season; the continual dedication of it was reflected through the weekly practices. In addition to croup practices, competitors were also required to practice on their own in order to perfect their pieces and be better prepared for the tournaments. From the long hours o f preparation that went into Lincoln Douglas and Student Congress, to the use o f humor and wit in categories such as Duo and Original Oratory, students were given the opportunities to truly express themselves and earn recognition for their mastery of speech and persuasion. Forensics at Prep has enabled its members to express their thoughts clearly and effectively, and has simultaneously helped each student build his own confidence.

This past June and July twenty-four Prep students traveled to Schleiden, Germany to spend two and a half weeks with a German family. There they experienced the German culture from the friendly people to the relaxed Rchool system. Prep students discovered many similarities, like the music, and many differences, like the 9:30 PM (sunset. They attended classes with their exchange partners and traveled the area to see different sights, like a real medieval castle and the birth house of Karl Marx (Ms. Curry went on the Exchange). The Americans then beat the Germans in the traditional basketball game for the first time in two Exchanges. After a teary goodbye the Prep students left their German families to spend a week in Berlin. In Berlin the guys had a lot o f free time to explore the city and experience all it had to offer. ski club embarked on a weekend trip to Mount Snow, Vermont. Traditionally, the ski club has a large student turnout, and this year was no different. Led by moderator Ms. Kaija Dewitt, this year’s trip was a clear success. Many first time skiers engulfed themselves in the snowy atmosphere, and were challenged by the blustery conditions of the courses. The more experienced opted for more difficult terrain. Snowboarders also took advantage of the ideal winter climate. On Sunday, an exhausted group of some of Prep’s most courageous students made their way back home. Despite fatigue, the ski trip was an enjoyable weekend for everyone in attendance.

From square roots to logarithms, the Prep Math Team demonstrates the strength of the Prep curriculum by meeting four times a year, participating in National Catholic High School Math League. On both the Varsity and Junior Varsity levels, the teams spend several lunch times in preparation for these tests. Consistent practice, dedicated attendance, and a fundamental knowledge of a variety of math skills are foundations for the success of the Math team. The tests are always a challenge, but the Math Team always manages to fair well. Moderated by Mr. Pat Reidy, the Math team has become quite a popular club for many of Prep’s students. Competing in these events gives students an opportunity to learn more about the complexities of math, while having a little fun in the process.

Liberty and Justice for All A new club meets in the halls of Prep, and it hopes to raise awareness of international issues and human rights injustices that go on around the world. Amnesty International is dedicated to freeing prisoners o f conscience, gaining fair trials for political prisoners, ending torture, political killings, and “disappearances,” and abolishing the death penalty throughout the IS world. Around the world hundreds of people aril being tortured and killed for their religious and political beliefs. As members of the Amnesty Ind. Chapter at Prep, students receive information on a certain number of pending cases every month. They write letters; to appropriate authorities, which will hofipefully lead ised. Ms. I to the release of persons unfairly accused Curry asserts, “Even if our efforts lead to the release o f only one prisoner, it will have been worth it.” In Amnesty International, people really do work for the American values of freedom and liberty - for all.

ifiW Twice a week, you can find mystical creatures wielding magical powers at Prep. No, this has nothing to do with some sort o f plumbing defect that makes the runoff from the chemistry lab come out of the water fountains two days each week. Those creatures and powers exist on the cards used by the new “Magic: The Gathering” Club. Moderated by Fr. Azzarto, and led by club president Dan Pata, the club holds tournaments regularly and gives Prep’s Magic fans an opportunity to play their game o f choice. Even more significant than the club’s activities themselves may be the level o f freshman involvement. Club President Pata is a freshman, along with many of the members. If the Magic Club is an indication o f the Class o f 2005’s willingness to get involved in the community, the next few years at Prep should be interesting.
^ \ s c M e/> Frisbees in Jersey City? Believe it or not, the Prep Ultimate Frisbee Club started off its first official year well. The game involves a team o f seven trying to advance the disc towards their end zone, while the defending team of seven tries to intercept the Frisbee and bring it towards their own goal. Led by senior Mike Monteleone, sophomore Jim Coe, and moderators Mr. Matt Greeley and Mr. Dennis Hu, the club attracted a large base of members, from not only the Freshmen Activity Fair I but also from the upperclassmen. The Prep courtyard, H as well as some nearby parks, served as homes to | many “pickup” games and scrimmages. The team, consisting o f mostly upperclassmen, competes in the New Jersey High I School Ultimate (NJHSU) league with 20 other school I teams from around the state.

Mr. James Collins, the Dean of Student Affairs at Prep is probably one of the most loved members of the faculty. He has been part of the Prep faculty for the past 13 years and enjoys every minute of it. N ot only is he Dean but he is also a teacher, which gives him a more personal relationship with the students. As Dean, he assists Mr. Dandorph in everyday enforcement of the Prep rules, supervises non-atheletic activities, supervises lunch areas and lockers as well as distributes locks and lockers. “I feel more involved on a different level. W hat comes into mind when you think o f senior year? Colleges, colleges, colleges! And as every senior in high school knows the process o f searching, applying, and receiving adm ission into these prestigious institutions is a long and arduous one. Ms. Janice M artineau has taken on the gargantuan task o f organizing the seniors’ transcripts, recom m endations, and any other docum ents that are required for the college scene. The smell of a traditional home cooked meal fills Prep’s halls at the crack of dawn and continues through the end of lunch. Well, OK, not quite. Bagels, eggs, popcorn chicken, cheeseburgers, and meatball heroes are just some of the varied types of food that pass from the kitchen to Prep men each early and late morning and afternoon. The cafeteria allows hungry students to be fulfilled whenever they wish. So if your stomach’s growling and lips smacking, indulge: the cafe’s got something for everyone.

In the Jesuit tradition, education is an integral factor in shaping the entire person. Academics at Prep hold true to this Jesuit tradition and are intellectually stimulating, inviting, and demanding. Learning is conversational and takes place both inside and outside of the classroom. Quizzes, tests, readings, exams —all are designed to motivate and challenge the Prep student in preparation for college life and beyond.

Learning is not limited to classroom subjects —it also happens during school symposia or trips to different places. Instructing its students in a wide variety of topics —everything from Milton to mitosis to the latest social justice issues that face the world, a Prep education is a liberal and provocative one. The educational philosophy of Prep is a time-honored Jesuit tradition that strives for intellectual excellence.

BrotherhoodandUnity) of BrewOvercame ignorance anCrlntolerauce By Farhan Malik ‘02 September 11,2001. A day diat tested America to its limits. A test that sought to examine how well we transformed fear and hatted into courage and unity. Unfortunately, discrimination became visible to me on the streets. As I entered my mosque I heard ethnic slurs being shouted in the distance. I encountered hatred as I simply walked to my local supermarket. In all this despair, I saw only one refuge other than retreating home: that refuge was St. Peter’s Prep . After four years o f attending St Peter’s I saw the spirit of Prep stronger than I had ever seen before. The brotherhood and unity of the Prep community brought relief to me as a Muslim fearing the manifestation of the ignorance and intolerance of a few. While others were looking for someone to blame, the Prep community came together with other Muslim students and me to mourn the tragic events. Prep’s resolution in not allowing this act of terrorism to divide us as a community was clearly visible through an interfaith prayer service and an unprecedented effort that raised an extra $30,000 for the Walkathon that will be donated to the victims o f the September 11 attack. But it did not take the events of September 11 to remind me of the outstanding unity at this high school. When I first arrived at the steps of Grand and Warren I feared I was making a mistake by going to Jesuit school. They did not have any real reputation, right? I definitely did not expect that the Jesuits would have any beneficial religious impact on me. Actually, I was attending because o f the notable academic reputation. I did fear standing out in school because I was a Muslim among a majority of Christians. However, I was soon to find out that I would get more than I expected. I learned this when I took World Religions in freshman year. The course provided an academic curriculum that proved to be rigorous, but at the same time allowed me to further explore my own faith. I learned that I could not continue learning about other religions before I had not fully embraced my Islamic faith. This idea of self-discovery became more prominent throughout my years at Prep. As soon as I learned something about Christianity, I forced myself to better understand Islam’s view on the same subject matter. Now as I approach heading off to college I can be confident that I fully understand my religion, but at the same time I can understand the views of other religious traditions, mainly that of Christianity. Prep allowed my mindset to develop from being tunnel-visioned to having the whole world before my eyes. But there is something more than the books and courses at Prep that allowed this potential for self-development. In my opinion, there are three things: teachers, activities, and the friends you I make at Prep. The teachers at Prep had always taken an active role in making themselves a strong presence ?
T r ib u te
in my Prep career, T he personal contact was a big influence on my maturation. It became easier to talk to adults at hom e and outside the school community after my teachers spoke with me. Note that I said spoke with me, not spoke to me. I admired the fact that teachers took the time to recognize and to respect my faith. Instead o f simply saying Christian prayers before the start o f . class, m any teachers included Muslim prayers as well. The biggest shock came to me when I learned that Prep teachers even provided space for Muslim students to pray after school. T he next big influence o n my development as a young adult came from the extra-curricular activities at Prep. T he activity that m ost influenced me was forensics. I f I were not in forensics for as long as I have been, I would not have the confidence to stand up here in front o f all o f you and talk about niy experiences at Prep. But after giving five-minute speeches about whether you support or oppose a bill to legalize cloning, for example, in front o f a group o f about thirty mock Congress members once every m onth for seven m onths for three years now, you naturally develop oratory skills after a while. Simply said, forensics helped me to speak really well. Finally, there ire the friends that I made at Prep that have influenced my journey in becoming a man. The Prep community is one o f the m ost diverse places I have encountered in Jersey City, an extremely diverse city in which I have lived my entire life. So, that says a lot. I can relate to my friends at Prep because they have nothing in comm on with me; we are constantly learning new things about each other and our respective cultures. Once again, Prep contributes to the developm ent o f my mindset from a narrow range to a broad spectrum. So what is there left to say about the school? Well, I can tell you that I have a lot o f hopes for my senior year that has only recently begun. I hope to lead the forensics team to a first-place finish in the Newark Catholic Forensics League, and hopefully the National Tournament. As coeditor-in-chief o f the Petrean, I hope to, make this year’s yearbook the best the school has ever seen. A nd I hope to actually finish my college application essays. But I have even greater expectations. I hope that the Prep community and the nation can continue to overcome the hardships o f the tragic events o f September 11. I pray that the interaction between Muslims, Christians, Jews and other faiths continues throughout the nation as peacefully as St. Peter’s. But I could not have all these hopes and dreams without the Prep community. Thank you, jind G od bless America.

Tuesday, September 11, 2001, will be remembered as a tragic day that changed the world. That morning, a plot, masterminded by terrorist Osama bin Laden and the al-Qaeda network, was put into action. Two hijacked commercial airliners were flown into New York City’s World Trade Center Towers, ultimately causing their collapse. Immediately following the incident, another hijacked airliner crashed into one side of the Pentagon in Washington, D.C, and a fourth plane crashed in Pennsylvania. Thousands of lives were lost, citizens were terrified and the world was in shock. Following that mournful day the United States experienced anthrax scares, continued security threats and the reality of war. Despite the horror, fear and heartache, U.S. citizens united and their patriotic spirit soared. President Bush promised: “ We will not tire, we will not falter, we will not fa il.” Through that statement and the remarkable sense of national pride exuded by U.S. citizens, it became evident that no threat, great or small, could deter the United States resolve for enduring freedom.
