Dear Friends, As I look back on my youth, I do not remember a time when my father’s older brother was without his hat. It was a traditional men’s hat; the kind with the small feather protruding from one side. He wore it to our house on Sundays when he and my grandmother would come for dinner. He wore it to hockey games and to bowling alleys, alike. If I were outdoors, I would never have recognized my uncle without his hat. I must admit that even though I never wore one, my uncle’s hat taught me a lot about life. I learned very early on that I needed to carry a comb in my shirt pocket to keep my hair in place, even though it would eventually get thin over time. In addition to more practical lessons, I also learned higher things from that hat. Whenever we passed a church, for example, my uncle would always tip his hat in reverence to the Blessed Sacrament contained within. I knew from that simple gesture that there was something different – something important – about a church, and I suspect it was from such seminal moments that my own vocation began. I learned about the dignity of respect at an early age, and I am grateful to my uncle and to his hat for that special gift. At today’s Fashion Show, our co-chairs, Marian Meuse, P’09, ’13, Cindy Guarini, P’12, Leonor Perez, P’12, and Mary Dombrowski, P’13, ’15, invite us to tip our hats to Saint Peter’s Prep. As our students know all too well, there is something very special about the mission of Prep: forming men of “competence, conscience and compassion” since 1872. While intangible in many cases, the Prep experience is one of tremendous value because it does more than simply transmit data and facts. Rather, Saint Peter’s Prep takes young boys and forms them into young men, and that is clearly something sacred. And it is reason enough to tip our hats. I wish to thank Marian, Cindy, Leonor, and Mary for their hard work in creating this special day. I am also grateful to Mary Freeman, P’08, ’12, president of Prep’s Parents’ Association, and to Barkha Cardoz, P’11, ’15, and Frances Salvo of our Advancement Office for their steady assistance. On behalf of us all, I wish to tip my hat to both honor and thank them! Enjoy the day! Hat’s off to you all! Sincerely yours,

Rev. Robert E. Reiser, S.J. President
