The stars are out in Jersey City...
To benefit the Saint Peter’s Prep financial assistance program Saturday, April 21, 2012 The Westin Jersey City Newport
Saint Peter’s Prep new jersey’s jesuit high school since 1872 office of the president
April 21, 2012 Dear Friends, As we gather this evening for our fifth annual 144 Grand Gala, we celebrate another milestone as well: April 3 marked the 140th anniversary of the charter granted by the New Jersey Legislature to create Saint Peter’s College and, of course, Saint Peter’s Prep. As we remember our founding, I am especially grateful for the foundations upon which we continue to build the Prep community. Nearly 2000 years ago, Saint Peter was, of course, chosen by Jesus to be the rock upon which he would build his Church. A little over 400 years ago, Henry Hudson moored the Halve Maen at Harsimus Cove, just a stone’s throw from where we stand tonight. The Dutch settlers who followed would name this tract of their new colony Pavonia, after its landlord, the nobleman Michael Pauw. Among its features was a rocky island among the marshland to the south, which would come to be known as Paulus Hook. It was upon that rock, Paulus Hook, that a group of priests from Saint Peter’s Church on Barclay Street in Manhattan would begin the work of building a new church in what had become Jersey City. When the Jesuits arrived, both they – and the school and college they built alongside the church – were working upon the solid foundation of the Ignatian tradition. It is upon that tradition that our students, faculty and staff continue to build the mission of Saint Peter’s Prep each day. It is your support, both tonight and throughout the years, that allows Saint Peter’s Prep to be the rock of our Paulus Hook community, and the foundation upon which young men build their life’s journeys. You, the women and men of the Prep family, are the rock upon which this rock rests. And so tonight, in a very special way, I wish to thank all who have made our Gala possible, particularly our chairs: Mary Beth and Jack Caulfield, ’71, P’00,’03, Jane and Jim Donofrio, ’81, P’11,’14, Eileen and Tom Finn, ’83, P’13, and Paula and Anthony Venditti, P’12. I am grateful, too, to those who hosted our nine gift-gathering parties this year: the Butko, Cabrera, Glancy, Kellner, Rabasca, Reynolds, Rizzo and Uliano families, along with my fellow Jesuits at the 14th Street community. Thank you as well to those who donated our many gifts, and to all of our sponsors and guests who are making this evening so special. Finally, we could never have achieved this great evening without the dedication of our Prep advancement staff and a legion of volunteers who are now working behind the scenes. As we remain grounded upon the solid foundation that has brought us together tonight, let us also reach for the stars in support of our students and their families! Gratefully yours,
Rev. Robert E. Reiser, S.J. President

Sub Umbra Petri.
Joseph M. McShane, S.J., President of Fordham University
April 21, 2012 Dear Friends, It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the fifth annual 144 Grand Gala, and we are honored to chair tonight’s event as we celebrate this milestone. This evening is the culmination of many months of planning and hard work, reflecting the spirit of generosity and devotion that defines the Prep community. We thank Fr. Bob Reiser, S.J., along with Chris Casazza, ’97, Frances Salvo and the Prep advancement staff for their untiring commitment to the success of the Gala. Thank you for sharing this journey with us! Your support is what makes the Gala possible. Alumni, parents and friends have donated items for our auctions, volunteered to help with office work or the organization of tonight’s event, or simply provided support throughout the process. In a special way, we are grateful to those families who opened their homes to host the Gift Gathering Parties. We thank all our corporate and individual sponsors whose donations helped fund tonight’s event and our students’ educations. As you read through the program you will see the many names of alumni, parents, friends, faculty, staff and area business people who have been so generous with their time, talents, and treasures. Each year, the Gala brings a tremendous outpouring of support and devotion for Saint Peter’s Prep – and especially for its students. We are inspired by the enthusiasm with which the Prep staff and the broader Prep community come together to make it all possible. As parents of Prep students, past and present, we know what Prep offers and the value of a Jesuit education. Many of you, too, know why Saint Peter’s Prep is special. You have experienced it yourself as a Prep graduate, or as a parent, grandparent, relative, or friend of a current or former Prep student. No matter your relationship, your support of this event will help young men who aspire to become “Men for Others” reach the starting point of their own journeys at Grand & Warren. We promised you that the stars would be out in Jersey City this evening, and indeed they are. Your generous support is what makes each of you a star of Prep’s biggest and brightest evening. We hope you will enjoy every moment of it! Sincerely,

PHASe oNe:
Trustees Approve Phase One of Campus Master Plan; Initial Projects to Begin This Winter
“The board’s endorsement of the master plan’s initial phase is not only an exciting moment in the history of Saint Peter’s Prep, but also is an endorsement of the plan’s thoroughness,” stated John V. Caulfield, ’71, board chairman. “Significantly, the proposed phasing of the various projects over many years allows the school to execute projects and phases only when adequate funding is available for each step. This fact ensures that the board is discharging its fiduciary responsibilities, especially regarding such a broad-based master plan, appropriately.”

ways, the experience of the Keys to the Future campaign in the 1990s and the Carpe Diem campaign earlier this decade have provided a solid foundation for this latest major-gifts effort.”
In an effort to bring greater cohesiveness to the pedestrian flow on campus, the extensive renovation of Burke Hall will include a new, focused “main entrance” to the campus, just off the Warren Street Plaza and directly across from the main entrance to the east side of the campus. This new configuration will provide a well-designed focal point for students and visitors alike, while also providing a logical starting point from which to reach any of the current or future buildings that comprise the master plan.
The approval of Phase One by the board of trustees includes conservative financial parameters, with transitional work on the church and adjacent spaces scheduled to begin in mid-winter of this academic year. Concurrently, work will continue on the preparation of detailed architectural and construction documents regarding the science building, with construction expected to begin by summer of 2011.
The building’s primary function, however, will be to serve as a well-equipped science center that is a vast improvement over the school’s current offerings. For more on the future of science at Prep, see “Scientific Methods,” page 46

The first phase of the master plan is comprised of two related projects, beginning with the conversion of Saint Peter’s Church, on Grand & Van Vorst streets, into a temporary all-purpose space that will serve primarily as the student cafeteria. This will be followed by an extensive, floor-to-ceiling conversion of Burke Hall (on Warren & York) into a state-of-the-art facility devoted almost exclusively to science. The combined cost of these phase one projects is approximately $9.5 million and will be financed through the new fund created for this purpose, entitled Imagine: The Fund for Saint Peter’s Prep. Growth of the school’s scholarship resources, and a few smaller initiatives, are also being funded through the Imagine Fund. The church building itself—which Prep has owned since 2004— became available for full-time use by Prep this past spring when the Parish of the Resurrection announced that the facility would be closed as part or the broader reorganization of the parish’s member churches. The final parish Mass was celebrated in the church in July. For Prep President Robert E. Reiser, S.J., the early support of the Imagine Fund has provided crucial momentum as the master plan has taken shape over the past two and one-half years. “Especially given the economic climate over the past year or so, I am very gratified that our outreach thus far has yielded enthusiastic support for the master plan, in terms of encouragement and advice, as well as in financial support,” said Fr. Reiser. “It is always a challenge to raise capital funds while also running a successful Annual Fund, but our constituents seem to understand our need to do both. In many

“It is very easy to be enthusiastic about this master plan,” Horan noted, reflecting on his four-plus decades at Prep that began with his days as a student in the late 1960s. “For many years now, Prep has been a great school despite its aging physical plant. Fortunately, the projects completed as part of our last two capital campaigns—especially the new library, the Warren Street Plaza, and Keenan Field—have started to close that gap,
The other phases of the master plan include, in sequence, extensive renovations of Mulry Hall and Hogan Hall; a major reconfiguration of Shalloe Hall, the former Jesuit residence; the construction of a large multi-purpose space; construction of a new academic building (along York Street); and the conversion of the upper floors of the Humanities Building (former Freshman Building) into space for nonacademic administrative offices. James C. Horan, ’70, vice president for planning & principal giving, serves as Prep’s internal coordinator of the master planning projects, while also working closely with Fr. Reiser on the major-gifts fundraising that supports the Imagine campaign.
This new wave of projects, developed with the input of our professional advisors, our faculty and administration, and other constituent groups, will have a truly transformative effect, enhancing every aspect of campus life, both in and out of the classroom.
while also demonstrating the school’s ability to raise significant capital funds.

“Most gratifying is the fact that Prep’s ‘vital signs,’ especially enrollment and fundraising, have remained strong, despite economic uncertainties. Our Jesuit tradition and academic excellence continue to serve us well, which has encouraged alumni and others to provide a number of early leadership gifts in support of the Imagine Fund. Overall, the master plan is ambitious, but as we hear so often from alumni and others, Prep is worth the effort.”

Prep’s master planning process—more than two years in the making—notched a significant milestone on June 22 when the board of trustees unanimously approved phase one of the project. The endorsement of the trustees sets in motion an extensive and farreaching campus-renewal program—projected to extend a decade or more—that will include both new construction and the extensive renovation of virtually all existing buildings.

Llve Auctlon Bidding Begins at 8:45 p.m. Cruz-in’to victory! Last season, New Jersey’s own Victor Cruz danced his way around defenders, over goal lines and into the hearts of the Giants faithful each week, helping Big Blue to their second Super Bowl title in five years. But the real excitement begins after the final whistle, when you’ll get to walk among the Giants – literally! – as you’re led to the locker room to meet the man himself, face-to-face! To top it all off, this package includes a Victor Cruz autographed football to bring the glory of Giants football to your home or office! Restrictions: Mutually agreed upon date with donor. Donated by: Victor Cruz

The autographs read as a list of NBA royalty, with names like Kobe Bryant, Dwayne Wade, Dwight Howard, Kevin Durant, and current NBA MVP Derick Rose, just to name a few!
