REV. CHARLES BEIRNE, S.J., ’56† PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Fr. Charlie Beirne is the epitome of what makes the Jesuit order so special. The “service” portion of his resume is equally as compelling as the “professional achievement” component, and it was this combination of seeking the Magis, service to others, and the pursuit of justice that made him one of the most admired Jesuits of his generation. Fr. Beirne entered the Society of Jesus upon graduating from Prep in June of 1956, professing his vows in 1958. Upon receiving his doctorate from the University of Chicago, Fr. Beirne was immersed in academic administrative roles in various Jesuit institutions, including associate dean of the School of Business at Georgetown University, academic vice president of Santa Clara University, headmaster of Regis High School in Manhattan, and assistant director of the Committee on Research and Development of the Jesuit Secondary Education Association at Fordham University. Most notably, Fr. Beirne was an important part of a contingent of Jesuits who voluntarily risked their lives to travel to El Salvador in 1990 and reopen the University of Central America, in San Salvador, following the murder of six Jesuits, their housekeeper, and her daughter, by members of the Salvadoran army. While serving in El Salvador, Fr. Beirne was academic vice rector and taught education. He was also the coordinator of the National Education Reform Project. Fr. Beirne returned to the U.S. in 2000, when he was appointed as Le Moyne College’s 11th president. During his seven-year tenure, he spearheaded a comprehensive five-year strategic plan, created a new mission statement, developed a 20-year architectural plan, and launched a capital campaign that successfully raised over $91 million. Fr. Beirne passed away on July 14, 2010, after a 17-year battle with cancer. He is survived by his brother Thomas Beirne, his sister, Eileen Hart, and his brother-in-law, Dominick Hart, ’59.
MARK HOGAN, ’83
PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Throughout a distinguished professional career, Mark Hogan has maintained deep roots in his hometown of Bayonne, and at Grand & Warren. Mark has served as Chairman of the Board of Bayonne Community Bank since 2004, and under his leadership, the bank has significantly increased its footprint, stature, and outreach in the New York metropolitan area. Mark was one of BCB’s 18 founding directors when the bank was established in 2000, with one branch and a modest $7 million in assets. His impact was profound right from the start, thanks to his extensive financial knowledge, outstanding leadership, and bold vision. This prompted his fellow directors to appoint him Chairman in 2004. Since then, BCB has grown to 32 branches in 21 communities—including three out-of-state branches—and $3 billion in assets. Under Mark’s leadership, BCB has earned numerous accolades. Most recently, the company was included in the prestigious Sandler O’Neill Sm-All Stars Class of 2019—an elite group of 30 publicly traded small-cap banks and thrifts nationwide, selected based on financial criteria including growth, profitability, credit quality, and capital. Mark has also built his own CPA practice (Hogan & Associates LLC), a wealth management practice (Hogan Financial Advisors), served on the Count Basie Theatre Board of Trustees, and served two terms as a member of the Prep Board of Trustees, including having a significant role on Prep’s Finance Committee. Today, Mark resides in Naples, Florida, with his wife, Karey. Their daughters, Ashley and Erin, currently attend Northeastern University and the University of Tampa, respectively.
REAR ADM. STEVEN TOMASZESKI, ’68 PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
From the moment Steve Tomaszeski entered the U.S. Naval Academy, his career path has been defined by a combination of intelligence, expertise, and professionalism. Upon graduating from Annapolis in 1972, he served initially as a Surface Line officer, deploying to Vietnam aboard the nuclear cruiser USS Long Beach (CGN-0). In July of 1976, he earned his Wings of Gold from the Fleet for Naval Flight Training and was designated a Naval Aviator. His aviation sea tours included two assignments in Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron Nine (HS-9) on board USS Nimitz (CVN 68) and his command tour in HS-5 on board USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69). In July 2001, the now-Rear Admiral Tomaszeski assumed command of Carrier Group Six / USS John F. Kennedy Carrier Strike Group. Under his leadership, on 9/11, the twelve ships of the John F. Kennedy Carrier Strike Group established air security along the mid-Atlantic seaboard, bringing calm to a fearful and shocked nation. Just months later, from March to July of 2002, Rear Adm. Tomaszeski supported combat operations in Afghanistan, as Commander during Operation Enduring Freedom. In October 2002, he was assigned as Commander, Navy Personnel Command/Deputy Chief of Naval Personnel, and in 2003, he assumed duties as the 16th Oceanographer/Navigator of the Navy. Following his retirement from the Navy—with 33 years of service and the Navy Distinguished Service Medal to his credit—Rear Adm. Tomaszeski joined the Lockheed Martin Corporation in July 2006. He retired from Lockheed Martin in 2016 as Vice President, Navy-Marine Corps Programs. Today, Steve resides in Leonardtown, Maryland, with his wife of 48 years, Elizabeth. They are the parents of Michael, James, and Mary, and the grandparents of Jack, Logan, Roman, Vera, and Elyse.
GEN. EDWARD DALY, ’83
PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD As of today, there have been a total of 242 four-star generals in the history of the United States Army. On July 2, 2020, Jersey City’s own—and Prep’s own—Ed Daly, joined that list as the 20th Commanding General of the U.S. Army Materiel Command. Over a military career that has spanned 33 years, Gen. Daly has commanded and led soldiers in the U.S., Europe, and Korea, and his combat deployments supported Operation Enduring Freedom, in Afghanistan, and Operation Iraqi Freedom, in Iraq. Gen. Daly was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Ordnance Corps upon his graduation from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1987. He earned master’s degrees in business administration from Gonzaga University, and in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College. Gen. Daly served three years as the Commanding General of Army Materiel Command, while also serving as the Senior Commander of Redstone Arsenal in Hunstville, Alabama. Prior to this, he served as Deputy Chief of Staff for the Materiel Command, overseeing the roles and functions of the headquarters staff. In his current role, Gen. Daly is responsible for commanding a workforce of 190,000 soldiers, civilians, and contractors responsible for delivering installation, logistics, sustainment, and materiel readiness to the U.S. Army worldwide. His awards and decorations include the Army Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, and Defense Meritorious Service Medal, among many others. Gen. Daly often credits his Jesuit education, and his upbringing in Jersey City, as the influence for his leadership within the Army. Over the years, he has taken the opportunity to address the Prep community on topics related to Jesuit values in the mission of service leadership.
REV. WILLIAM WATTERS, ’52
ERNIE BAKER, ’38 COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD Throughout his 67-year ministry, Rev. Bill Watters has played a direct role in the formation and development of several Jesuit start-ups, including schools and social outreach ministries. He has indeed devoted himself to a life of service and a commitment to doing justice—a calling he felt as early as May of 1952 when he and four other Prep students visited the Jesuit Novitiate with Fr. Ray York, S.J. By 1991, Fr. Watters had served a parish of 15,000 in Nigeria and opened a feeding and shelter ministry just outside of the parish. But along with a return to the U.S., his enduring legacy awaited, as he would come to redefine Catholic education in the city of Baltimore. Fr. Watters was first assigned to serve at the financially-struggling St. Ignatius Parish, and tasked with determining whether it should close. Instead, he identified a need for a middle school to serve inner-city youth. Thus, St. Ignatius Loyola Academy was born. It is an innovative all-boys middle school geared toward serving a low-income minority student population. With a rigorous curriculum, plus an extended school day and school year, the school teaches young boys the value of being Men for Others while preparing them to succeed in high school and college. Knowing there was more work to be done, Fr. Watters established Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in 2007. Cristo Rey schools are a network of high schools that integrate rigorous college-preparatory education with four years of professional work experience, through sponsored internships. These internships not only help finance each student’s education but also provide experience in professional development. Just ten years later, Fr. Watters sought support and successfully opened the Loyola Early Learning Center, a preschool geared toward assisting families with low income. Today, Fr. Watters serves as Assistant Pastor at St. Ignatius Church, and as the president of The Loyola School, a tuition-free Jesuit kindergarten. His next mission? Expanding the Loyola School to grades 1 to 4, so that kids of all ages in Baltimore have access to an affordable Jesuit education.
BILL LILLIS, ’80
ERNIE BAKER, ’38 COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD Since his earliest days as a Prep student, in the late 1970s, Bill Lillis has held a special place in the hearts and minds of everyone with whom he has come into contact—and that sense of generosity, inclusiveness, and care for others has defined his life ever since. Bill has devoted his life to lending a helping hand to those in need. His compassion and devotion to justice have been his hallmarks in fields ranging from education and drug prevention to community activism, especially geared toward helping the homeless. Bill’s career as a teacher granted him the opportunity to impact the lives of high school students in Jersey City, specifically at the Academy of St. Aloysius, St. Anthony High School, and, for six years, back home at Saint Peter’s Prep. More recently, Bill has been an instructor, mentor, and coach at Integrity House in Newark, a center dedicated to mental health and addiction treatment and recovery support. Working with The Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey initiative, Bill developed the Newark Shuts Down Drugs and Drugs Don’t Work in New Jersey programs, becoming a parent educator and workplace coordinator on drug and alcohol prevention in schools and other organizations. In his hometown of Jersey City, Bill helps tackle issues such as affordable housing with creative solutions as a member of Jersey City Together, supports a community of faith and life-enriching services in the Greenville neighborhood as an active member of Our Lady of Sorrows parish, regularly cooks or solicits others to provide meals to St. Lucy’s Shelter or Bread for the World, and remains an active leader of Prep’s Alumni Spirituality Committee. In that role, he has helped to organize alumni and parent retreats, Theology on Tap presentations, marriage renewal programs, retirement seminars, and the Mass on the Road program. Bill is one of ten children, including his brother Jack Lillis, ’77, and his sister, Kate Lillis-Magnus, Prep’s Director of Annual Giving. His Prep roots run deep, with numerous other alumni among his cousins, nephews, and in-laws.
MIKE MURCIA, ’08
YOUNG ALUMNUS AWARD Upon making the decision to attend Saint Peter’s College, Mike Murcia was most excited about one specific factor: he would be close to his alma mater. Throughout his college career, Mike made himself available to serve as an adult leader on Emmaus, Kairos, and Campus Ministry Team retreats at Prep, and as a facilitator of the Prep Student Life Sophomore Conversations program, opportunities that made him feel close to “home” and reinvigorated his love for Prep. After six years of working in banking and sales management, an opportunity to work at Prep opened, and for Mike, it was the opportunity of a lifetime. Mike began his role as Prep’s Director of Alumni Relations in 2016 and immediately set goals to grow alumni engagement, Prep’s Alumni Association, and participation at alumni events. In his five years as alumni director, Mike has surpassed participation and attendance goals for a wide range of initiatives, including a record attendance of 228 golfers at the 2018 Mack-Cali Saint Peter’s Prep Golf Tournament, the top two participation and fundraising records of Prep’s Senior Gift campaign history, and record attendance at Prep’s 50th and 60th Reunion weekends. Always looking to add an innovative approach, Mike successfully launched events like the Marauders Down the Shore Belmar Reunion and Weekend JUG Night Happy Hour, which have helped to increase engagement among younger alumni. Over the years, he has successfully helped recruit a number of graduates to join Prep’s alumni board, with the vision of molding a board of diverse individuals representing all that is special and valued among Prep’s graduates of the last seven decades. Today, Mike continues to dig deep into his love for all things Prep. He currently serves as moderator for Marauder Nation, co-advisor for Prep’s Student Council, and moderator for Prep’s E-Sports Team, a brand new club that has recruited 64 active participants in its first five months. His love for Campus Ministry is more alive than ever. In 2019, he served as an adult leader on Prep’s Campus Ministry’s global outreach trip to Quito, Ecuador, spending two weeks with ten students immersed in service opportunities and reflection. In the 2021-2022 academic year, Mike will serve as a director on a Koinonia (sophomore retreat) and a Kairos (senior retreat). He currently resides in Jersey City’s Country Village neighborhood with his fiancée, Lily, and his daughter, Kailyn.
The Act of Giving is the Heart of Happiness and Community. THANK YOU, BILL! Sisters Alice, Carol, Luke and Elise, O.P.
BOB CORKE, ’55
BR. PAUL HARRISON, S.J., SPIRIT OF PREP AWARD Bob Corke, a proud member of one of Prep’s proudest classes, has redefined the extent to which an alumnus can “give back” to his beloved alma mater. It began with his early work on the Prep Phonathon in the 1990s where he played a crucial role in his class’ organized and effective annual outreach to classmates in support of Prep’s Annual Fund. By 2012, Bob became known as the Advancement Office’s “Thursday regular”—a steady and reliable weekly volunteer. Bob has become a most welcome fixture on the third floor of Shalloe Hall, inputting data and helping to locate “lost” alumni. This includes creating new comprehensive records for each new graduate, including adding the graduate’s activities into his record. This support also includes helping the advancement team manage the mailings, large and small, that keep alumni engaged regarding upcoming reunions and out-of-state receptions. This work is all part of the behind-the-scenes operations in Advancement—often overlooked yet so crucial to maintaining the bonds of the Prep alumni network. In addition, Bob provides invaluable assistance at nearly every Prep event. Whether it is helping out at the check-in table of a reunion or greeting parents and prospective students at an open house, Bob is typically the first to arrive and the last to leave. At Prep, Bob loves to spend a free moment visiting students in the Rev. John Browning, S.J., ’46 Learning Center, or impressing faculty and staff with an encyclopedic knowledge of Prep trivia. From 1963 to 1970, Bob served as a parochial vicar for the Archdiocese of Newark. He then began a 36-year healthcare career in which he held a variety of managerial and administrative positions, ranging from private medical specialty practice and hospital management to home care, skilled nursing, intermediate care, and rehab facilities. Before retiring in 2009, his career included some years as Planning Director in the Bergen County Department of Health Services. These days, Bob complements his service to Prep with weekly volunteer service at his “other” alma mater, Seton Hall University. He resides in Maywood, New Jersey, and is the proud father of Kathleen Corke and Patricia Corke-Ocello, and grandfather of Trey and B. Langston.
JOHN T.M. CHESTER, ’74, P’03,’05
BR. PAUL HARRISON, S.J., SPIRIT OF PREP AWARD John Chester’s love for, and devotion to, his alma mater date back to his student days as chair of the Mission Drive and School Spirit Committee, and a member of Student Council. John’s booming voice was a staple of Roosevelt Stadium or the Prep gym, leading the crowd in roaring chants. While attending Prep, John also branched out in service to other institutions. He was the youth representative to the St. Aloysius Parish Council and was a member of the first class of lay lectors commissioned by the Archdiocese of Newark. In 1972, he served on the 75th anniversary organizing committee for the parish, and he was later invited back as an honorary co-chair of the centennial celebration. John applied that same work ethic throughout his life, often juggling mutliple professional roles. As a freshman at Saint Peter’s College, he began working for the Jersey City Public Schools. Over a 44-year career he would rise to second-in-command in Business and Operations, overseeing and managing a $760 million budget. John also spent six years with the Internal Revenue Service as an auditor, trainer and manager, and 25 years as the owner of Right Way Tax Service in Jersey City. He currently owns JTMC Consulting LLC, offering consultation services to educational institutions. John is the co-chair and a longtime member of Prep’s Alumni Spirituality Committee. In 2019, John formed the Bereavement Committee, a sub-group that offers solace to grieving alumni and relatives by attending wakes and funerals, and providing bereavement cards on behalf of the Prep community. John’s commitment to this initiative has demonstrated a commitment to the Jesuit values of cura personalis, servant leadership, and solidarity. Today, John serves on the Saint Dominic Academy board of trustees. John and his wife of forty years, Rosemary, are the parents of Tim Chester, ’03, Kevin Chester, ’05, and Megan Meleounis.
