– LEGENDS OF PREP – Raymond D. Aumack, ‘55 In the Spring 1988 issue of Prep Magazine, the cover story focused on “The Prep Network”— how alumni of various generations were making professional contacts with increased frequency. Prominently featured was Ray Aumack, who was personally responsible for expediting a number of professional relationships among his fellow alumni. The article ended with this quote by Ray: “The world is smaller, and richer, because we are part of a great fraternity—Prep alumni.” If you have ever come in contact with Ray, you can almost hear his voice as you read his quote, since very few alumni have been as closely identified with the spirit of what it means to be a Prep alumnus. Actually, Ray was “networking” with fellow alumni decades before the term entered the vernacular. Coupling his passion for Prep’s Ignatian values with his own spirituality, he has been one of the school’s premier ambassadors, and if something has been important to Prep, it has been equally important to Ray. This manifested itself prominently in 1991, when the school decided to create its first formal Alumni Board and Ray topped every list of potential members. It had nothing to do with the alphabet; it had everything to do with his track record, including the pivotal role he played a decade earlier when Prep was first codifying its alumni and fundraising programs. In terms of staying connected, the Class of ’55 was something special…and Ray was its centerpiece. Ray holds a position of prominence in numerous personal phone lists, as he is called upon often when an alumnus is in need of support or counseling. His insights and avuncular manner combine his Jesuit training with his undergraduate studies in philosophy at Seton Hall and his master’s in divinity from Immaculate Conception Seminary. In addition, Ray has a master’s in New Testament studies from Drew University and has taken numerous courses at institutions ranging from Notre Dame and NYU to the U. of Chicago and Catholic U. He also holds a post-graduate diploma in psychotherapy from the Alfred Adler Institute. Professionally, Ray’s career has included management positions in the healthcare field, especially in the area of corporate health awareness and services, and for many years he headed his own human resources firm. Also, on the collegiate level he has taught courses and lectured on such diverse topics as juvenile justice, career management, St. Paul’s Letter to the Romans, and the Theology of Revolution. He also is an accomplished writer and poet. Ray has sat on the boards of numerous non-profit organizations, and currently he is very involved as director of various ministries at St. Cassian’s Parish in his hometown of Montclair. He also has been the recipient of myriad awards for leadership and service. Ray and wife Ruth are the proud and loving parents of four children.

– LEGENDS OF PREP – Eugene C. Boyle, ‘56 Prep alumni tend to enjoy each other’s company—that’s a given. Of equal certitude is the fact that Prep alumni take particular pleasure in being in the company of Gene Boyle, ’56, who is identified not only as a “guy’s guy,” but in a special way, “a Prep guy’s guy.” A Bayonne native, Gene studied under fellow “Legends” Charlie Rooney and Lou Parisi, ’44, among others, and he was a varsity starting pitcher in the baseball program coached by yet another Prep “Legend,” Bill Cochrane. For most of his adult life, Gene has been a key component of the Prep alumni landscape—a member of that core group who tend to be on everyone’s contact list. It began with his stature among his ’56 classmates, for whom he has served as class chairman since the title was created in the early 1980s. In a school that emphasizes creating and strengthening bonds among its alumni, Gene helped to literally define the position. At about this same period, when Prep embarked on the creation of what would evolve into a multi-faceted external affairs program, alumni leaders were needed. As always, Gene answered the call with enthusiasm, and the combination of his intelligence and his exuberant personality was a magnet for others to join Prep’s nascent alumni program. He was a catalyst, and his ebullience and commitment were contagious. Also, his modus operandi was remarkably simple and admired: he listened—something he does as well as anyone you will ever meet—and then provided logical and creative feedback. It was not surprising that Gene would be “drafted” as a charter member of Prep’s Alumni Board in 1991 and later would share his talents further as a two-term member of the Board of Trustees, serving as chairman of its nominating committee. Concurrent with his tenure as a trustee, he remained one of the most active members of the Alumni Board—a position he proudly holds to this day. A loyal son of Saint Peter’s College, Gene maintains close ties with his former Prep teacher and current rector of the College’s Jesuit community, Ed Heavey, S.J., ’47. For both institutions, in word and deed Gene has embodied the very best of their Ignatian values, and he is fiercely proud of his Jesuit foundation, which is complemented wonderfully by his training as a C.P.A. A model of consistency, for the last 29 years he has worked as an administrator for Cytec Industries, Inc., and he currently serves as the company’s director of real estate. He is an avid fan of sports on every level—especially when the high school uniform includes the color maroon, or the helmet includes a N.Y. Giants logo—and is devoted to his wife Cathy and their three daughters.

– LEGENDS OF PREP – James F. Keenan, S.J. It is difficult to convey on a single page the breadth and scope of Jim Keenan’s profound impact as a priest, administrator, and friend. But in many ways it is unnecessary to do so, because if you know anything about Jesuit secondary education, you certainly know his name. His impressive resumé chronicles a lifetime of devotion to the ideals of Ignatian education, and yet he is known equally, if not more so, for what are euphemistically referred to as his “people skills.” Whether in a corporate board room or at a family memorial service, upon meeting him you walk away saying, “What an incredible individual.” This journey began more than 50 years ago when he entered the Novitiate at St. Andrew-on-the Hudson in Poughkeepsie, and it continues to this day through his recent appointment as president of the Nativity Mission Schools of New York City. A New York native, Jim began his Jesuit formation following his graduation from Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Brooklyn. His studies took him to Loyola Seminary for college and philosophy, Fordham University for graduate school, Woodstock College for theology, and Columbia Teachers College for graduate courses. During his graduate work at Fordham in 1963, he began a17-year tenure at Xavier High School in New York City, during which he was promoted from teacher, to headmaster, to president… and from Mr. Keenan to Fr. Keenan upon his ordination in 1969. He then moved upstate to serve as president of McQuaid Jesuit High School in Rochester (1981-1988). Following a brief term as director of the Jesuit Seminary and Mission Bureau, he was named president of Canisius High School in Buffalo, and in 1994, following in the footsteps of Prep’s founding Jesuits 122 years earlier, he crossed the Hudson River and began twelve truly “legendary” years as Prep’s leader. Highlights of “the Keenan years” have become part of the school’s lore: the successful completion of two capital campaigns; the creation of the Warren Street Plaza; significant growth of the scholarship endowment; and the building of the athletic facility on Grand Street that was named in his honor. This latter parcel, coupled with other property acquisitions, nearly doubled the size of the campus during his tenure. But more meaningful than what he has done for the place is what he has done for the people whose lives he has touched. A phone call on an anniversary, a personal note, an unannounced hospital visit to an ailing alumnus, a word of encouragement to a nervous freshman, his presence at more functions than one could list: Jim Keenan has made others feel remembered, comforted, loved. In every endeavor he effortlessly balanced his role as president/CEO with that of Jesuit priest, and in everything he did, his care for the individual made it easy for everyone to call him “Father” (even though he always prefers “Jim”). He has left his magic every place he has served; he loved each school and each has loved him back—truly, the stuff “Legends” are made of.

– LEGENDS OF PREP – Charles M. Lizza, ’74, P’11 Given his legacy of extraordinary service to the alma mater, Charlie Lizza’s selection as a Prep “Legend” is no surprise. At the same time, Charlie holds a special distinction—that of being the youngest of all the individuals who have received this honor. An honors student, Petroc editor-in-chief and varsity swim team member, Charlie was “a natural” in the competitive and academic Jesuit environments of both Prep and Saint Peter’s College (summa cum laude and Rhodes Scholar nominee). He continued his Jesuit education at Georgetown Law, where he was editor of the Law Review and graduated magna cum laude. After a clerkship for the chief federal judge in New York, he enjoyed a successful early career at Shearman and Sterling in Manhattan, and later as a partner at LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene and MacRae. This year he joined the Newark office as a partner of Philadelphia-based Saul Ewing LLP, concentrating in commercial, product liability and patent litigation. Charlie also serves as a federal mediator in the U.S. District Court of New York and has taught as an adjunct professor at Rutgers Law School. Charlie has always remained in touch with his roots at Grand & Warren, and his financial support of the school as a young professional served as a role model for others of his generation. He joined Prep’s Board of Trustees in 1994 and served as chairman from 1999-2004, succeeding fellow “Legend” Tom Sullivan, ’53. Not surprisingly, it was a seamless transition, especially noteworthy because it took place as Prep was launching its Carpe Diem capital campaign. Charlie joined Prep President Jim Keenan, S.J., in a potent partnership during this period of great change, including tremendous growth of the endowment, the restructuring of faculty salaries, the acquisition of the adjacent grammar school and church properties, and the building of Keenan Field. Like all such honorees, Charlie continues to lead by example, underscored by the endowed Prep scholarship he and his brother John, ’75 created in their parents’ honor. In addition, Charlie ranks among the school’s most trusted advisors in legal and strategic matters. Charlie’s personal and professional generosity to Prep is only one component of his living the Jesuit ideals. He is an advocate for children through his leadership in the areas of youth counseling, education and adoption services, and he currently serves on the Board of Directors of Covenant House New York, for which he was elected board chairman for 1998-2003. He also is general counsel to the Heart Gallery of New Jersey and has leadership roles in the Boy Scouts, from which he has received numerous honors. Charlie and his wife Sandy are residents of Summit, where they have embraced their new role as proud Prep parents, with son David in freshman year and his brother Michael planning to join him next year.
