When I was a student here in the early eighties , Prep was still , for the most part , a school run by Jesuits with the help of lay people Our Jesuit roots were nurtured daily by the presence of priests, brothers , scholastics and novices. Twenty-five years later, my son is a freshman and I am in my sixth year as Director of Admissions , following thirteen years as a member of the English Department Lay people now outnumber our Jesuits , yet the lgnatian spirit is as strong as ever How can that be possible?
As I reflect on my days as a student, I distinctly remember individuals who modeled the Jesuit ideals each and every day Those individuals breathed life into terms like magis and cura personalis , transforming them from phrases on posters into standards by which to live one's life Tony Azzarto , Ned Coughlin , Tom Garvey, John Mullin , Ray Balduf, Paul Harrison , John Browning: each wore a collar (certain days ) and an SJ followed their names But there were others who had not made formal vows , yet also taught me how to live a life ad majorem dei gloriam. Charlie Rooney, Bob McGuiness , Rich Kennedy, Walter Koszyk, Carl Delorenzo, Ana Garcia and Jim Horan had dedicated their lives to Saint Peter's Prep and ignited in me a love for a place that would become much more than just a school.
Today I join them, certainly not in stature , but in a life committed to Jesuit education and its value in forming people of conscience , competence and compassion With the naming of our first lay principal - Jack Raslowsky, '79 , in 1992 - most recognized that although leaders who are Jesuits might be harder to find , women and men imbued with the Jesuit spirit were ready to serve Jack's love of Jesuit history and his knowledge of lgnatian pedagogy made it clear that our Jesuit identity was alive and well. The message taught by Prep's members of the Society of Jesus continues to be supplemented by a corps of faculty members who also believe in , and are devoted to , the teachings of Ignatius.
I look at my colleagues and see folks like Jim Dondero, Rich Hansen , Jim DeAngelo, Rosalie Romano and Jon Dwyer sharing the same passion and vocation with Tony Azzarto , John Mullin , Bob Reiser, and Mike Hoag If Saint Peter's Prep is to be a school run by lay people with the help of Jesuits , there are many who will gladly take up the chargestanding on the shoulders of giants to do so

Aher 30 years at Prep, so many family names come to mind who had three, four, or even five sons at Prep. I think of the Viggiano, Finn, Raslowsky, Feeney, DeMarco , and Giordano families, just to name a few. All had four or five sons at Saint Peter's Prep Recently, a young sophomore, Essa Riaz, reminded me that we are also blessed with the Riaz family - a Muslim family who have found a home at Saint Peter's. Essa is the fihh son to experience Prep, and will graduate in 2010 . Since 1991 , the Riaz
family has been a part of Prep The family has lived in Jersey City for many years aher coming from Pakistan
Azam Riaz, who graduated in 1995, is now married and works for the U.S. government. Ahsan , '99 is a doctor residing in Brooklyn, while Asif, '03 graduated from Saint Peter's College and now works in New York. Mohammad, '00, is now a police officer. The graduates continue to come to alumni football games and relive the days when they played for Prep Essa worships with the family in their local mosque and hopes someday to make a pilgrimage
A club sport until 2005 , the fencing team is steadily growing as one of Prep's many vcirsity sports.

Under the guidance of head coach Abdelwahab Abdelaziz and assistant coach (and Prep math teacher) Gregory Evans, the team competes in three events, or "weapons" - Foil, Epee and Sabre, each with its own set of rules and·physical requirements The team began practicing at the Cobra Fencing Club on Grove Street in 2006, and the season runs from late November to mid-March . Although only five members compete in each weapon, the entire team totals about 40 students - "I did not cut anyone, as we have room for everyone Even if a student did not make the team this year, he still can come to practice, because we prepare him for next year's team ," said Coach Abdelaziz . While many team members are new to fencing , several have already practiced and competed in local private clubs as well as non-high school tournaments For example, Sean Buckley, '09 is currently ranked #7 in the 2007-2008 United States Fencing Association (USFA ) Point Standings for Cadet Men's Sabre. And even though the sport in only in its third varsity year at Prep, Coach Abdelaziz estimates that his team ranks about average among other local. high schools "I am expecting more fencers to sign up next year - some of them are practicing fencing all year around which will strengthen our team ," he said "It is a fun individual sport, which can help lots of the students to get scholarships in colleges or will support them when applying to colleges " ii
In the Spring 2007 issue of Prep Magazine, six Prep seniors were featured as true "Prep guys ." Graduation has come and gone and our Prep guys have moved on to six universities that many students can only "dream" about: Andrew Cevasco , Loyola College in Maryland; David Finn, Georgetown University; David Garcia, Harvard University; James Liggins, Yale University; Sonam Lama, Rutgers University; and Michael Rogers, Villanova University. Like most recent graduates, they made sure to visit their alm a mater when
they were home for the holidays. When asked what they missed the most about their days at Prep, almost to a man, they replied their friends, their teachers , free time and pizza. Some · have declared a major, others are still exploring the possibilities, but they have conti'nued to involve themselves with sports, service and campus organizations The traditions of a Prep guy last a lifetime .

As part of an ongoing school-wide initiative to ensure future growth, Prep President Bob Reiser, SJ, has announced two administrative appointments in the advancement office.
Jim Horan, '70 has been appointed Vice President for Planning & Principal Giving, and Francesca Lanning, P' 10 has been appointed Vice President for Institutional Advancement.
Since 1991, Horan served as the school's Vice President for Planning & External Affairs, overseeing the offices of admissions, alumni relations, communications, development, and special events, as well as serving as the school's primary spokesperson on matters of significance. In his new role, he will coordinate the school's ongoing strategic planning and master planning process, including interaction with trustees, architects, contractors, city officials, and the local community. In addition, he will serve as the school's major gift officer, with emphasis on significant and ongoing philanthropic support for various current and future projects . He will continue in his role as the institution's spokesperson Lanning, who joined the Prep administrative team in spring 2006 as Director of Development, will continue to oversee and implement most aspects of the development office, especially the Annual Fund, while also supervising the offices of alumni relations, communications, and special events. In addition, she will oversee prospect research and related initiatives that will play integral roles regarding various fundraising initiatives.
"I am extremely grateful to Jim and Francesca for their willingness to accept these important new responsibilities, which will play a significant role as we increase our identification and development of strategies, initiatives and resources that will have a profound impact on the continued growth and vitality of Saint Peter's Prep," said Fr. Reiser. "Together, they bring a wealth of experience and talents that will continue to serve Prep well."
Under the leadership of Editor-in-Chief David Sambade, '09, and moderator David Muir, Prep's new student literary magazine, Literama, published its first issue in mid-February The 32-page volume includes the work of fourteen different student writers, as well as contributions from six student artists. This successor to Paper and Pen takes its name from a similar Prep publication of the 1950s.
Chris Hetherington, '09, (I.) Conor McCarthy, '11 (r.) and Michael Ibarra, '09, all earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 2007.
Lawrence Bovich, '09 attended LeadAmerica's Intelligence, Defense and National Security youth leadership conference at Catholic University in Washington, D C., in June. He participated in an intensive National Security Simulation, taking on the role of a defense or intelligence gathering agency, debating and advocating for action and presenting testimony before a Special Council on National Security
Petroc Managing Editor Louis Sullivan, '09 has joined the Observer, a weekly newspaper serving the West Hudson area, as a regular contributor to "Bridging the Gap," a feature highlighting issues that impact teenagers, as well high school students' perspective on current affairs. His columns have covered a range of topics, including school restrictions on cell phone use, the value of volunteer work, and broader issues such as global warming.
Louis DiPaola, '09 traveled to Columbus, Georgia in November to speak at the lgnatian FamilyTeach-ln, an annual event held to mark the anniversary of the slain Jesuits and laywomen in El Salvador, to reflect on the commitment to live "a faith that does justice·; and to call for an end to unjust institutions, including the School of the Americas
Prep's music teacher, Steve Caslowitz, joined nearly 2,000 fellow Long Island swimmers in the annual Long Beach Polar Bears Super Bowl Splash to benefit the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Braving the 39-degree Atlantic waters before 20,000 spectators on Super Bowl Sunday, he raised nearly $1000 from members of the Prep community -an Steve Caslowitz displays his impressive contribution to Prep Pride as he prepares to jump the event's record total into the chilly Atlantic Ocean off donation of $300,000 Long Beach.
Prep 's ecle ct ic urban campus is one of the school 's greatest features It is a metapho r for the school itself, balancing the t raditional w ith the mode rn, and comb ining the strengths and g ifts of each of its constituent membe rs to produce a whole that is greate r than its parts
Just as each member of the Prep c ommun ity has his or her own g ifts to contribute ad majorem Oei gloriam, each build ing at Prep lends its own style , co lor, te xture , and scale to the campus as a whole Some of the " gifts " the bu ild ings offer are more fam iliar, while othe r details , easily overloo ked , are pleasant surprises to be dis c ove red and redis c overed

Thanks to the Prep community's formidable creative energy and reliable enthusiasm for a good cause , Mission Drive time means a walk through the hallowed halls after school might lead you to see some unusual goings-on. Besides the perennial favorites like bake sales and video game competitions , this year's crop of Mission Drive events included some new and, shall we say, innovative ideas.
The fencing team, for its part, organized a Faculty Fencing Tournament, pitting teachers and administrators head-to-head and foil-to-foil, to the delight of combatants and spectators alike For the record, when all the swashbuckling was over, John Irvine, '83, Prep's Director of Admissions, emerged victorious For less competitive souls, there was a "vintage" Prep Film Festival, featuring movies made earlier this decade by a TV Studio crew that
included no less than three members destined to return to Prep as faculty and staff members Rounding out the arts and entertainment slate, the Student Council organized "Prep Unplugged," a well-received open-mic night for the musically inclined
The creativity, and in some cases humility, that goes into planning and staging these events goes a long way toward making each year's Mission Drive both an exciting time at Grand and Warren and an unqualified success for the Jesuit Missions the funds support

Faculty members return to Jesuit education after careers in the private and public sectors.
By Ginny Needham-Doyle, P'07
Ask most members of the Prep faculty, and they will tell you education is their lifelong vocation, what they always knew they wanted to do : to teach at a great high school. But for a handful of Prep teachers , it has been more of a gradua.l realization tl?an a lifelong dream
Already quite accomplished in their own right-two in the legal profession, another in the world of business technology-before they ever picked up a piece of chalk at Grand and Warren, each brings his or her own experience to bear on their work in the classroom. Each had been the product of Jesuit education: Saint Peter's Prep, Saint Peter's College, Fordham University, Boston College and Gonzaga University. And one by one, faced with a professional crossroad, each chose the path that led back to Jesuit education-this time on the other side of the podium
Jim Hollywood (Prep, '66; B.S, Saint Peter's College; M.S., Stevens Institute of Technology)
Chairman,
Manager,
Mathematics Department;
Prep's Campus Shop
If you had asked young Jim Hollywood what he wanted to be when he grew
up, he would have said a lawyer. That changed when he entered college : a major in chemistry at Saint Peter's College was followed by a master's degree in computer science from Stevens Institute. At that point, Jim would have told you he would be a computer programmer for the rest of his life, and before long he was the president of a computer technology division of ITT
"We collaborated with computer scientists in Russia and Israel," Hollywood recalls. "I became involved with venture firms that either bought or started high technology computer companies to solve very specific problems, such as handwriting recognition software for bank checks. When our company was sold, I had the opportunity to again decide what I wanted to be when I grew up."
In a classic case of being in the right place at the right time, Jim learned of an opening in the math department at Prep through a family friend, Prep external affairs staff member Nancy Cunningham Soon thereafter, he joined the faculty.
Jim credits his own Prep education as the one thing that helped him get his job done, no matter what the particular job happened to be.
"It was at Prep that we learned lessons about work ethic, organizational skills, interpersonal relationships, concern for others , time management wi~h sports , and a whole host of things that help a teenager become a man," he stated Hollywood tries to share his life experience with his students , telling them, "You never really know what you will wind up to be, so stay ready when the call (or the many calls) comes, and make sure you have the skills to handle whatever comes along."
Jim Hollywood considers this career move to have placed him in the best job of his life, and he looks forward to achieving "Bene Merenti" status in a scant 16 years, standing proudly among his mentors and peers .
Mary Durante (B.A., M.s., P.o., Fordham University; J.D., Fordham Law School)
College Placement Counselor; Moderator, Forensics Team
At a time when most of her students are trying to pin down exactly what they should do with their lives, Mary Durante encourages them to be open to what can happen on life's "big adventure ." Her personal career path has traveled from art galleries to classrooms, to courtrooms and finally back to the classroom. A communications/art history double major at Fordham led her to pursue a master's degree in special education, also at Fordham . After two years of teaching in New York City Catholic schools, Mary began working for a non-profit education foundation, which offered her the opportunity to go to law school. Upon graduation, she was hired as an assistant corporation counsel for the City of New York, where for the next eleven years she defended the City in litigation and court trials.
"It was an exciting time in my life," she said "I loved living in the city, but I wanted to raise my children in a more suburban setting " She moved to New
Jersey, passed the New Jersey bar exam and became a part-time litigator, fulltime mother, school board president, and entrepreneur. As her children headed to high school , so , too , did Mary, returning to her alma mater, Immaculate Conception High School in Lodi , as the director of guidance and curriculum . During the summer of 2005 , Durante learned of an opening in the college placement department at Prep , and realized during the interview process that "it felt like home; it was the right move for me."
Mary believes her training as a litigator was the best preparation for her job as college placement counselor.
"You are an advocate for your client, tenacious in helping him present his best face to the presider," she ex plained Similarly, she attempts to teach the students how to advocate for themselves as they prepare their college applications and go on college interviews Her years in the courtroom have provided Mary public speaking skills that she shares with the members of the forensics team , of which she serves as moderator Reflecting on her past endeavors versus her current position , Mary says with an enthusiastic smile , "This job is constructive , affirming, varied and interesting. I once worked on the same court case for five years At Prep , no two days are alike ."
History Teacher
Anthony Keating discovered his twin calling at the movies While watching "A Man for All Seasons," and again during "To Kill a Mockingbird," he knew he wanted to be an attorney When the movie "The Paper Chase" came out in the early 1970's, "That did it for me ," he stated emphatically. "I was hooked I knew I had to be a lawyer, but I wanted to teach , too ."
As a student at Prep , Anthony participated in Emmaus 111 , the firstever Prep Walkathon , and the Petroc , and he also had been a member of the football and track teams . Following his graduation from Prep , he received a Presidential Scholarship to Boston College to pursue a major in English
The study skills he had learned at Prep aided him greatly at BC, and he
"It was at Prep that we learned lessons about work ethic, organizational skills, interpersonal relationships, concern for others, time management with sports, and a whole host of things that make a teenager become a man."
Jim Hollywood, '66, Chairman, Prep Math Department
was awarded a Thomas More Scholarship to attend the Gonzaga University Law School in Spokane, Washington , thus expanding his Jesuit educational foundation Following graduation from Gonzaga , Anthony clerked for Richard P. Guy (Chief Justice , retired) of the Washington State Supreme Court and served in that state's Attorney General's Office as an Assistant Attorney General.
After 11 years out west, which included numerous cross-country treks to visit family and friends , the Keatings decided to return to the east, where Anthony was recruited for a position with the State of New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority Inspector General's Office, investigating, overseeing, and auditing the largest transportation agency in the U.S He was eventually promoted to General Counsel.
Anthony's jobs frequently required him to train fellow attorneys, and those who knew him often mentioned that, with his exemplary communication skills , he would be an outstanding classroom teacher After completing his time at the MTA, he took a sabbatical , during which time he wrote a chapter of a published text book on world history It appears that his return to Prep came by chance, but he thinks it was providence.
"Fr [Tony] Azzarto needed an adult to help out with an Emmaus retreat in February 2005," he explained , "and after reconnecting with the Prep students, I felt a calling to teach here ." The rest, as they say, is historyliterally-as a teaching position in the history department soon became available and Anthony's wife urged him to apply.
Today, Anthony integrates his life experience into his daily Prep experience, sharing courtroom cases with students in his United States Law elective and using some of his experiences during his many crosscountry trips to help direct this year's successful student walkathon He continues to participate as an adult leader on the Emmaus retreats , and, not surprisingly, he considers the greatest benefit of working back at Prep to be "the opportunity to influence a life." Translated as "to one wel.l deserving," Bene Merenti is the recognition given to members of Prep's faculty and staff who have served the school for at least 20 years .
~ fleeting on his young tenure as Director of Campus Ministry at rep , Ryan Heffernan chuckled as he recalled a common misconception he encountered when the new school year began. "For the first week, there were a lot of freshmen calling me 'Father Heff,' not realizing I'm not a priest."
It isn't hard to understand how one might jump to that conclusion. Prep's Campus Ministry program has a long and proud history of Jesuit leadership, after all. Heffernan and Assistant Director of Campus Ministry Erich Sekel, '98 represent a new look for the program. At age 24 , Heffernan is closer in age to most Prep students than he is to most Jesuits. Sekel, 27, is engaged to be married . Neither owns a single black shirt With this "dynamic duo" at the helm, Campus Ministry is entirely under lay leadership for the first time. But underneath this new, fresh-faced look, the substance of Prep's Jesuit mission and identity remains as strong as ever.
FOR THE FIRST TIME IN PREP HISTORY, THE CAMPUS MINISTRY PROGRAM IS ENTIRELY UNDER THE DIRECTION OF LAY PERSONS - PROVING THAT A STRONG JESUIT PRESENCE CAN EXIST WITHOUT THE DIRECT LEADERSHIP OF A JESUIT PRIEST.
By Mike Jiran, '03
After graduating from Boston College in 2006 with a degree in journalism, Ryan Heffernan began to pursue a career in the field. However, when journalism "stopped being fulfilling," he reflected upon an earlier spiritual experience, and discovered a new calling. "I was on a Jesuit retreat when I decided that I wanted to commit myself to those same moments of spirit, and to others ... especially teenagers ," he said. "I'd had that experience at 20, and I thought how great it would have been to have had that same experience five years earlier. I wholeheartedly believe in what the Jesuits ask of [their] students." Heffernan joined Prep's Campus Ministry staff that fall, administering the Christian Service program for a year before becoming the program's first lay director.
Heffernan is a mainstay at Prep events, whether offering the opening and closing prayers at alumni gatherings, organizing campus and community Masses, or attending a game or co-curricular event to support his students. He hopes that his actions show the rest of the community how deeply he cares about Prep, and that a layperson is fully capable of directing the Campus Ministry program . "I think what people want is what's best for Prep, [and] I don't think we've strayed from that," he remarked. "We all have to bring the experience of God to this building and to our work, because that's

what makes the everyday experience of God I don't think you need to be a priest to do that Everyone has the opportunity to bring the existence of God to others "
In the 1998 Petrean, then-senior Erich Sekel listed his career goal as "Religion Teacher at Prep " A decade later, after he had earned a degree in classical civilizations from Boston University and one in education from Seton Hall , Sekel was working as a substitute teacher and a handyman when the call came from incoming Principal Jim DeAngelo , '85 Last August, Sekel returned to Grand and Warren , and joined Heffernan in the quest to help the Prep community find God in all things
"When I was at Saint Peter's," Sekel recalled, "I wanted to have the impact that my teachers at the time had on me I really believed in the message of 'A Man for Others .' You hear that message so much , but it was shown to me at Prep , and that's what I

wanted to be. I think the lessons that I learned at Prep have stuck with me, and that's why I wanted to come back"
Heffernan and Sekel have worked to build upon the strengths of the Campus Ministry program's existing lgnatian foundation . For instance , while continuing the enormously successful Emmaus retreat program for juniors, they have revamped and reenergized the retreats for other students . lgNite (Prep's first overnight freshman retreat ), Halffime (a new sophomore retreat challenging students to reflect on their first two years at Prep while looking ahead to the next two ), and Kairos (a senior retreat common at other Jesuit schools , meant to build on the Emmaus experience ) join Emmaus to form a complete, fouryear cycle
The two campus ministers have also blended old with new in their other programs Traditions such as the Thanksgiving food drive and prayer services in the Mulry Hall lobby before homeroom have carried on , stronger than ever Meanwhile, after-school lectures and the lunchtime Soul Fooq discussion series have provided new
The role of lay members of the Prep commun ity in build ing the spiritual foundat ion of the school's Jesuit mission is growing-and that growth isn 't limited to the " dynamic duo" of Ryan Heffernan and Erich Sekel. In Feb rua ry, Prep 's German teacher, Ryan Grusenski, '03 , too k the reins as retreat di rector for Emmaus 236 Typically modest , Grusenski is quic k to point out that he is not the only faculty member from outside the Campus Min istry program ever to direct an Emmaus wee kend-Principal Jim DeA ngelo , ' 85 , is among those who have gone before But the significance of the growth of lay ministry at Prepand his own contribution to it-is not lost on this fi rst-year teacher
"At the retreat house ," he recalled , " there is a chapel , but we don't really go into it. One of the students asked me why we didn ' t use the chapel to pray, and I told him , ' We don 't need to go there to find God He is all around us '" He sees the growing role of the laity as a similar invitation to students to live the Jesuit ideal of finding God in all th ings " I love my faith , talking about it , sharing that experience
Sometimes my fiancee and I will talk about whethe r I should devote myself primar ily to Campus Ministry rather than teach ing German , but what we always come back to is that the students already ex pect a Jesuit or even a lay campus min ister to be a person of deep and open faith. Hopefully, discovering that same quality in a German teacher gives them someth ing extra to thin k about in their sea rch for God."
Tony Azzarto, S.J., has been a leading figure in Prep's spiritual life for many years, as a member of the faculty, a student chaplain, and now as a guidance counselor and alumni chaplain To many who have joined him on an Emmaus retreat, called on him to celebrate a wedding or baptism, or simply had a conversation with him about finding God in their lives, Fr. Azzarto is virtually synonymous with Prep 's Jesuit mission
Those who have looked to him for spiritual guidance over the years, then , will likely be glad to know he is enthusiastic about the growing role of lay ministry at Grand and Warren "Prep has been blessed now with two young, dedicated laymen, Ryan Heffernan and Erich Sekel," he said. "Both live out our lgnatian spirituality in ministry to the school community " He also notes that lay ministry at Prep is not a new development, citing the contributions of lay faculty and alumni in leading retreats , as well as the four-year tenure of Matt Greeley, '90, as assistant campus minister earlier this decade
Fr. Azzarto believes lay ministers ' diversity of skills and life experiences can be a great asset to the Jesuit mission Heffernan and Sekel, in particular, "bring special gifts of knowing youth culture, technology, music, and the mindset of the young men at Prep "
"Saint Paul reminds us that there are different gifts to build up the Body of Christ," Fr Azzarto continued "How do we use these gifts, the gift of lgnatian spirituality to make a difference?"
forums for exploring lgnatian ethics and spirituality.
In addition, they have sought to strengthen the school's Christian Service requirement by asking students to reflect a bit more on the deeper meaning of their commitment. "It's not the 'Community' Service Program it's the 'Christian' Service Program," said Heffernan. "It forces the kids to ask questions about themselves and their society that an ordinary community service program might not."
Sekel added, "I want to make sure Christian Service is worthwhile. I want to show them that I feel it's important to serve. I want to give them options to continue their service One kid said it really well: 'It stopped being [just] 20 hours that I have to get done, and it became, How can I help these people
more?' That's exactly what I want . It should be a big part of their lives."
Heffernan and Sekel stress that, while they bring their own approach and energy as laypersons to leading the program, Prep's Jesuit influences are always evident in their mission and in their students . In return, they believe their efforts have been rewarded with the respect and confidence of the Prep communitystudents and colleagues alike-despite · the initial surprise some might
experience at discovering two young laypersons at the reins of the Campus Ministry program . Prep's President, Bob Reiser, SJ, sees this new take on Prep's Jesuit mission as part of a broader trend towards greater lay leadership in Catholic institutions "Since Vatican II, the Church has encouraged the lay vocation," he remarked, "and as a Catholic school, Prep finds itself embracing an opportunity to fulfill the desires of Vatican II."
The receptive and encouraging attitude on the part of Prep's Jesuit community-and the Prep community as a whole-has been a big help to the lay ministers, as well as an example for them to follow "The Jesuits put you at ease," said Sekel. "The people who become Jesuits seem to have an air
about them that makes you comfortable. That's what I try to emulate - I want people to feel comfortable enough to talk to me."
"I think the Society is just very good at meeting people where they're at," Heffernan said, as he reflected upon Prep's Jesuit identity and how it has paved the way for Campus Ministry's lay leaders to connect with their students. "When it comes to students in their high school years, I think that's why it works for Erich and me." Jil
Joseph Livi, '09 was one of several underclassmen who made major contributions to this year 's cross country team
With four of its top runners having graduated, the cross country team looked to the junior class for leadership . Complemented by senior Peter Drummond of Dumont , the younger runners finished an impressive second in both the Hudson County Track Coaches Association championship and the County meet.
The team surprised their Hudson County rivals, losing to Memorial by two points in one of the closest results in meet history
Drummond ended his season as a first-team All County selection, joined by juniors Joseph Livi of Fair Lawn and James Murduca of Jersey City, each of whom made the second team ~
The Prep soccer team's trademark defense kept every match close, but a lack of scoring prevented the Marauders from winning many of those tight games Helped by a backline of seniors Mike Stefanelli of Nutley and Gabe Galella of Secaucus, junior Stephen Conley of North Arlington and sophomore Luke Farley of Jersey City, goalkeeper Doug Freeman of Caldwell posted five shutouts . The team enjoyed shutout wins over Hudson Catholic (4-0) , Hopatcong (2-0) and Union Hill (6-0), but actually played its b~st soccer in a 2-i overtime loss to eventual county champion·Memorial. Galella, Freeman and fellow·senior, Keenan McRae - the team's leading scorer - were selected to play in the Hudson County Senior All Star Game .3i.
Thirty years ago, the Prep football team struggled against many of its county opponents and fifteen years ago about half of the schools on the
regular-season schedule provided serious competition. Today, the only struggle Saint Peter's faces against Hudson County teams, is how to keep
the starters on the field in the third quarter without running up the score.
The county winning streak, which began in 2000, has now reached 71 and although the make-up of the Prep teams has changed, the basic form ula for success has remained the same
Coach Rich Hansen has witnessed the progression, "We've had teams that overachieved, teams with fairly good talent that worked incredibly hard and now we attract better athletes. The combination of talent and work ethic is tough to defeat " Hansen attributes the success against county rivals to the passion his players have for the program, "They are proud of the name on the jersey." To keep his team focused, Hansen compares each season to climbing a ladder "They can't look up or down; they have to concentrate on each and every rung [opponent]."
The program is now regarded as one of the best in the state and for Hansen and his staff, the challenge is to keep Prep at that level. Sweeping the county is great, but Hansen points out, "We're playing for bigger prizes
The team is never happy just to be in the state championship game; we expect to win " For the third year in a row, Prep advanced to the state finals in Giants Stadium, losing to Don Bosco 42-14 . "We are trying to strengthen our schedule by opening next year against St. Joe's of Montvale and then adding a national power for our second game," added Hansen. Since 2001, the overall record stands at 83-5 with all five losses against the state's # 1 team
How will the program's lofty goals be affected by the graduation of Florida-bound All American Will Hill?
According to Hansen, "It will certainly be different, but in some ways, we'll actually be better. The Will Hill 'comfort zone' will be gone and several guys will have to raise their game to replace his productivity." The 2007 roster was loaded with a corps of juniors hungry for some of the spotlight Hill earned and eager to grasp that next rung on the ladder.
Rutgers Coach Greg Schiano congratulated Rich Hansen following the opening day victory over Delbarton The 22-15 result tied Hansen with Bill Cochrane on the Prep wins list.
Rich Hansen remembers meeting legendary football coach Bill Cochrane once, back in the early eighties It was a brief exchange of words in the Prep gym, and that was it. For Cochrane it was probably a forgettable moment - just another young coach hoping to find success on the gridiron But for Hansen it was an opportunity to shake hands with greatness - to speak to a man whose name was instantly associated with excellence, not only at Saint Peter's and in Hudson County, but throughout the state In that casual handshake, Prep 's football history touched its future
More than 25 years later, Hansen has (for the current football aficionado) set the standard by which Prep football coaches will be measured for decades to come Following the team 's second game of the season, a 61-0 victory over Memorial , Hansen moved ahead of Bill Cochrane (154-66-8) on the all-time wins list at Saint Peter's Prep Hansen's record now stands at 164-42-1. "I never thought I'd be here long enough to catch him;' joked Hansen He quickly added that the wins are secondary "He [Cochrane] affected lives and, as coaches , our real legacy is in the connection to our players." Perhaps the current "legendary" coach will one day meet the next Cochrane or Hansen in the handshake of a young, ambitious assistant; could Prep be that lucky?
Best ever? Those two words have sparked more heated debates in the world of sports than any others that come to mind. As his Saint Peter's career comes to a close, Will Hill's resume makes it difficult not to attach the phrase "best ever" to his name in any discussion of Prep's all-time football greats.
A consensus first-team All American; a second consecutive designation as the Star Ledger Player of the Year; a starter in the prestigious ESPN/Under Armour Senior Game; the only New Jersey player on the Parade All American team; and the #1 rated "athlete" recruit in the nation These are just a sampling of the accolades Hill has amassed - this year alone! In a Prep uniform, he has scored 103 touchdowns and lost only two games. Four and a half years ago, shortly after Hill registered at Saint Peter's, Coach Rich Hansen commented, "He will be the most highly touted recruit I have had." It was a bold, but prophetic statement from a coach who has seen many of the other players in contention for the mantle of "best ever."
Reflecting on Will's time here, Hansen said, "Now is the time to say 'wow' and to reflect on how good he is. I have watched his growth as a student, a leader, a teammate and a person. It is something special to have a great player who can stand for what the school and the program promotes " Is the Florida-bound senior the best ever? With a smile and a nod, Hansen put to rest any further debate
here with Coach Hansen, Will Hill lost only two games in his Prep career.
