posthumous induction.

Matt Foster-Moore, ’00 soccer As the 1999 Prep soccer team marched to the state finals, collecting the program’s second Hudson County championship in three years, the story that unfolded was one of a core group of veteran upperclassmen, some of whom had played all four years together on the varsity squad, leading the way. One of those leaders was midfielder and co-captain Matt FosterMoore, who told the 2000 Petrean, “The team had a great camp and was really looking forward to playing. Once we got on the field, everything we had worked so hard for paid off.” His own hard work that season earned him the HCIAA player of the year award, and he was voted one of the top 50 players in New Jersey – just the second Prep Soccer player to make the cut. For the third straight year, he had earned all-state recognition while leading the Marauders in scoring – helping him to a career total of 68 goals, second only to fellow Hall of Famer Tom Schember, ’79 on Prep’s all-time list. By his efforts, the four-year starter (and brother of 1997 co-captain Jonathan Foster-Moore, ’98) had helped Prep finish his senior season ranked #6 in the state, topping the favored Don Bosco in the state tournament before falling just short in the final vs. Bergen Catholic. Matt continued his Jesuit soccer exploits at Saint Joseph’s University, where he played all four years, earning first team Hawk Invitational and honorable mention all-Philly Soccer 7 recognition. Matt resides in Brooklyn with wife Lindsay (married this past September), and works in pharmaceutical sales.

Jack Gordon, ’92 Basketball Walk into Prep’s Memorial Gymnasium (taking care not to scuff the newly refinished floor, of course) and you’ll find the names of Prep Basketball’s career 1,000-point scorers displayed on the wall. Some of the names – Pedone, Barry, Waddleton, Nicoletti – are past Hall of Fame inductees in their own right. But leading them all, with 1,693 points in his Prep Basketball career, is Jack Gordon. While raining points down upon Prep’s opponents, Jack earned All-County honors in his sophomore, junior, and senior years, and was named the Hudson Dispatch Player of the Year in 1992, as he led the Marauders to their first South Hudson championship since 1979. He would continue his basketball career on a scholarship to Monmouth University, where he played on the first team in school history to reach the NCAA Tournament. By the time of his graduation, he had climbed into Monmouth’s top ten in career points (1,096), rebounds (432), assists (209), and steals (150). Beyond the court, Jack was a member of the soccer and baseball teams, and recalls formative experiences in the classrooms of Ken Dandorph, Jim DeAngelo, and Jack Raslowsky, as well as “the cameraderie of working daily towards a common goal with a group of guys,” a worthy summation of life at Grand & Warren in the early 1990s. Today, he resides in Miami with wife Alina and their children Ali (age 6) and Jackson (age 5), and serves as managing member of Next Level Aviation, L.L.C.

Pedro Cirino, ’96 Football “Arguably the best defensive back – and maybe all-around player – in school history.” Those were the words of a teammate in nominating Pedro Cirino for the Hall of Fame. Journalists covering the 1994 state champion Prep Football team dubbed the stingy defense “the Hudson Quiver” and “the Sea of Maroon,” but whichever metaphor you prefer, there’s no denying that one of the sharpest arrows, or one of the mightiest waves, was this hard-hitting junior free safety, who also contributed to the offense as a running back. As a co-captain the following season, Pedro would also help the 1995 Marauders to a second consecutive state final berth, even as he battled back from a preseason injury. Before heading to Boston College on a football scholarship, he had amassed three all-county selections, two all-state selections, one Hudson County Back of the Year award, and, of course, the coveted State Championship ring. And at the NCAA level, the accolades would only continue. As a three-year starter with the Eagles, Pedro was selected to the all-Big East first team three years in a row, and served as a team captain in his senior year. During his senior season, one member of the BC coaching staff put it this way: “Pedro plays the game the way it’s supposed to be played. He leads by example and loves a challenge.” Pedro would later sign with the New York Jets as a free agent, but injuries would prevent his anticipated NFL career from coming to fruition. Nevertheless, his place in Prep’s athletic history was already secured. Today, Pedro serves the community as a social worker with the New Jersey Child Protection and Permanancy agency.

Bill O’Donnell, ’95 Football As a two-year starter at left tackle, and a captain during the legendary 1994 state championship campaign that ended with Prep ranked #1 in the state and #6 in the U.S., Bill O’Donnell – known to his teammates as Bubba – anchored the offensive line and made room for an outstanding ground game to shine. Although linemen are often the unsung heroes of the offense, Bill’s contributions did not go unnoticed – he collected an armful of individual awards, including a first-team all state selection and High School Heisman recognition, before accepting a full scholarship to Syracuse University. With the Orange, Bill’s outstanding play continued to flourish as he provided protection to future NFL all-pro Donovan McNabb, appearing in five NCAA Bowl games, including the Orange and Fiesta Bowls. Bill passed away at age 38 this past January, but for the rest of his days, his teammates from Prep and from Syracuse remained his brothers for life – and they held him in similar regard. In nominating him for the Hall of Fame, one teammate remarked, “Bill was a hard worker and a teammate, not just a player. He made everyone work hard.” Another noted that for all his athletic ability, he “was an even greater human being.” That was clear to see in his work for the Health and Hospitals Corporation of New York City, where colleagues noted his firm belief in the mission of providing medical care for all New Yorkers. No wonder he is remembered so fondly by his family and friends from each chapter of a life well-lived.

The 1989 Football team

guided the Marauders to a 21-6 win over Hudson Catholic.

It might be hard, today, to imagine a time when Prep Football endured a 21-game, multi-season losing streak. But just such a nightmare finally came to an end in the third game of the 1980 season, when new head coach Gerry Bellotti

Thus began a decade of rebuilding: With a young assistant coach by the name of Rich Hansen on board, the 1983 team posted Prep’s first winning record in 15 years. 1985 saw the first undefeated regular season since 1958, and a long-awauted county title. And by decade’s end, under now-head coach Rich Hansen, the 1989 Marauders overcame two-time-defending champs Saint Joe’s Montvale on their home turf. It took a monumental, four-minute, 99-yard drive for a touchdown by Jimmy Francesco, followed by a gutsy two-point conversion (Tony Guma to Paul Mulcahy) with less than a minute to play, but for the first time since 1958, Prep had won a state football championship. The long years of waiting and the long process of rebuilding the program had finally paid off, and the return to glory had come. In a very real way, the true team effort of this gritty, intensely well-prepared Marauder squad set the tone for an era of Prep Football success that endures to this day.

Barry Tyne, ’59 baseball/football Here’s a statistic to ponder: in the 1958 calendar year, neither Prep’s baseball team in the spring nor Prep’s football team in the fall lost a single game, as each steamrolled to the state championship. And making major contributions to both of those outstanding campaigns was Barry Tyne, as he transitioned from junior to senior year. An outstanding left-handed power hitter and an excellent defensive first baseman, he posted a career .333 batting average, and was third on the team in hits, runs scored, and RBI in 1958. A teammate recalled his heads-up play at first base in a game vs. Saint Benedict’s, throwing to catcher Al Weigand just in time to turn a double play into a triple play! Those were the moments that earned him all-county, all-parochial, and all-state recognition in both 1958 and 1959. In the fall, Barry played both sides of the ball, as a sure-handed tight end, and a hard-hitting linebacker. Following the undefeated 1958 season, he was selected to play in the Hudson/ Essex All-Star Game. To go along with his baseball accolades, he was also an all-county and all-parochial selection in both junior and senior years. Barry attended Holy Cross on a dual athletic scholarship, where he continued to excel in both sports. A retired attorney, Barry has spent the past several decades living and working in the wilds of central Maine, where he operates Porter Point Camps, a hunting and fishing lodge on Nicatous Lake.

Edmund Caulfield, ’00 Swimming Before he ever dipped a toe into the swimming pool, Edmund Caulfield held a place in Prep history via the gene pool. In addition to his grandfather and namesake (Edmund, ’37), his father (Jack, ’71) and his brother (Chris, ’03), he counts no fewer than twelve more fellow Prep alumni among his uncles, cousins, and other relatives. But his versatility and speed in the water guaranteed his Prep legacy wouldn’t only be a family legacy. In a four-year varsity career at Prep, Edmund was a member of three county championship teams (1997,1999, 2000), the latter two as captain. He earned All-County honors each year in two individual and two relay events, and swam each year in the Meet of Champions. He won county titles in individual freestyle at every distance: 50, 100, 200, and 500 meters – along with the 100 meter breaststroke and 200 meter medley for good measure. As a senior, he also took the 200 freestyle at the Metropolitan (NY/NJ) Catholic Championships, while earning All Northern New Jersey recognition for the 200 freestyle individual and the 400 freestyle relay. On dry land, Edmund backed up his athletic prowess as a leader in the classroom and the Prep community, earning a spot in the National Honor Society, and being selected as student speaker for his graduation before heading to Georgetown. As a collegiate swimmer, he competed at the ECAC championships three times, he served as captain in his senior year, and was part of the 800 freestyle relay that posted the second-best time in school history. The Caldwell native now resides in Jersey City, where he is an attorney with Connell Foley, L.L.C.

Bob Zakhar, ’62, P’94 football If the measure of an athlete can be gathered from the opinions of his teammates, then Bob Zakhar is truly one of the greats. Among those singing the praises of this outstanding guard (who also found the time to play on the defensive line and serve as Prep’s place kicker!) is classmate and fellow Hall of Famer Tony Mendolla, who credited him with “opening holes for me, Wellington Davis and John Crowe as well as pass blocking for Wayne Zdanowicz.“ If you’re keeping score, that means Bob helped four teammates on their own paths to the Prep Hall of Fame, and tonight he joins their ranks. But although his greatest contributions came as part of a total team effort, his individual talent was too great to be overlooked. In his senior year, he was named to the Star Ledger’s first team all-state parochial, the New York HeraldTribune’s second team all-state, the Catholic Advocate’s first team all-North Jersey, and the Fifth Quarter Club’s all-county team. He was also a runner-up for the Lineman of the Year Award. Bob went on to accept a football scholarship to the University of Vermont, before an injury cut his playing days short and he returned to New Jersey, graduating from Saint Peter’s College and later adding graduate degrees from Jersey City State College (now known as New Jersey City University). “Bob always played hard and fair,” wrote one teammate. “He set an example for all of us.” Another added, “More than a great player, he was the spirit of our team. He was a good friend and always had good things to say about everyone.” As a beloved member of one of Prep’s most active classes of alumni, and the father of Michael Zakhar, ’94, he remains the ultimate teammate, long after leaving the gridiron behind.

In loving memory of the late Bill O’Donnell, a foundation has been created by his friends to honor the man’s legacy. The foundation’s main objective will be to provide a young man a scholarship at his alma mater, Saint Peter’s Prep. Prep works to make each student “a Man for Others,” and if you were one of Bill’s friends, he lived by that mantra – he would do anything to have your back. He was a big man with an even bigger heart. During his time on the football team he earned the nickname Bubba. We thought it would be fitting to name the foundation after his nickname to convey more of his spirit. This foundation will help a deserving student (or students) defray the cost of going to Prep though a scholarship in his honor.
