Saint Peter’s Prep pride & glory | then. now. always. Office of the President
April 2, 2022 Dear Prep Family, I am proud to welcome you to our 15th annual Grand Gala in the beautiful setting of Liberty Science Center. While Liberty State Park is renowned for its million dollar view, the view that is truly priceless to me is right here in this room tonight. How wonderful it is to celebrate our 150th “birthday” with a sellout crowd of more than 650 Prep alumni, parents, faculty and staff, and friends! How wonderful it is to once again share Prep’s biggest party of the year, all in one place, together! We are proud to call this the Grandest Gala as we celebrate our sesquicentennial. But it can only be the grandest with the tireless efforts and support of our Gala Co-Chairs. So please join me in thanking: Melissa and Joseph Battista, ’02; Erika and Francis Briamonte, ’86, P’25; Lori and Christopher Shannon, P’22; Stacie and Stephen Spiewak, ’03; Craig Styles, ’09; Maura and T.J. Sullivan, ’93; and Christine and Claudio Zamarra, ’90, P’21,’23. On behalf of the Prep community, I would like to share a very special thank you to Dalma Santana. After two years of fitting as much of the Gala experience as possible into two successful virtual events, Dalma has brought the Gala to its biggest stage ever, with its largest attendance ever. Prep magic. As you know, all proceeds from the Gala support financial aid for current Prep students and their families. Your generosity tonight helps keep the life-changing experience of a Prep education within reach. It is also just another way of exemplifying your belief in our mission. Thank you so much for this great love of our Prep. Tonight, we have so much to celebrate. It really has been 150 years of Pride & Glory. That Pride & Glory is alive and well now, and it always will be. Forever Forward. Pride & Glory,
Michael A. Gomez, Ed.D., ’91 President

Being asked to be a Co-Chair for the 2022 Saint Peter’s Prep Grand Gala was an honor to the highest degree. In any year, it would have been an amazing experience, but given that we are celebrating 150 years of Pride and Glory at the “Grandest” Gala, it has special meaning. Since 1998, Saint Peter’s Prep has been a second home to me as well as my family. Through ups and downs and life experiences, the Prep community have been a constant presence in my life to help guide me along the way. The importance of the Grand Gala is immeasurable in helping students from every walk of life succeed in their journey at Prep. I would personally like to thank you for attending as well as for your generosity to Saint Peter’s Prep. Finally, a huge thank you to Dalma Santana and the rest of the team for the undertaking of making the Gala the success it continues to be, each and every year. Remember, it truly is “Prep For Life!”
—Joseph Battista ’02
When our son, Jackson, began his freshman year last fall, I wrote him a letter (because that’s what Emmaus brothers do). In it, I shared with him the following wish: “May your journey bestow upon you the same intellectual curiosity, spiritual growth and emotional resiliency; the same capacity to enjoy your successes and willingness to learn from your failures; and the same joyful memories and enduring friendships that have made my life so rich and my heart so full.” That’s what Prep did for me, and it is why my wife, Erika, and I accepted Dr. Gomez’s invitation to serve as co-chairs for this year’s Prep Gala. Almost seven months later, Jackson’s Prep journey is off to a great start. And while his journey won’t be identical to mine – nor should it be – we already can see that it is being guided by the same Ignatian values, is offering many of the same growth opportunities, and is instilling in him a similar sense of Prep Pride. Where does this Prep Pride come from? It comes from belonging to a community of learners committed to the formation of the whole person. It comes from accepting the challenge to bring your best self to all that you do. It comes from finding joy in being a man for others. And it comes from being a part of Prep’s 150-year legacy of academic rigor, athletic excellence and spiritual enrichment. If you have joined us this evening, it’s likely because your Prep Pride runs deep, and because you share in the belief that our school’s next 150 years can, and will, be even better and more impactful than its illustrious first 150 years. Now that’s something to celebrate! Thank you for your support of tonight’s event. Enjoy the party!

Welcome to the 2022 Grand Gala, the Granddaddy of all Prep fundraisers! Together with Prep, Dr. Gomez, Dalma Santana and our fellow Co-Chairs, we want to thank you for your generosity supporting this fantastic event. Without you, so many students and their families would never realize the life-changing Prep experience. My wife and I have had many titles in our life. Some of these titles are that of parents, employees, Catholics, Co-Chairs, neighbors, siblings, and we share the title of being called friends. One of the greatest titles the Shannons wear like a badge of honor, is the title of being called a member of the Prep Family. From literally the first time we walked onto campus, we were engulfed by a sense of love, community, acceptance, and brotherhood that few other schools can match. When Gehrig, our 2022 grad, came for an open house in 2014 with his older brother, a Prep senior was speaking to a classroom of prospective families. He said, “I don’t care if you are the best athlete in the state or the biggest computer kid on the planet. When you walk through those doors and you put on this blazer, you’re my brother!” These powerful sentences resonated with the entire room. I will never forget it. Our eldest immediately said, “Dad, I’m coming to this school.” Gehrig also said, “Dad, I’m coming to this school.” And our daughter asked, “Do they let girls into this school?” We will miss the stories about the commute on the train and the light rail. We will miss the golf matches, we will miss the Prep Christmas parties and the special Masses. We will miss the feeling of Prep, but we are taking all that we’ve learned and all that we’ve felt with us. The families eventually must leave Prep, but Prep never leaves us. The boys walk into 144 Grand as youngsters, and they walk out as Men for Others doing God’s work. We can never thank the Prep Family enough for helping us raise our son. We may not have a village, but we have Prep. We have spent the last four wonderful years learning and loving as Prep parents, the Prep way. We are blessed and we are thankful for Prep. We are blessed and we are thankful for the love of your sons and the love of your family. We are blessed and we are thankful to be Prep for Life! Enjoy your Gala on this 150th Anniversary and know you’re making a difference to others. God Bless and thank you.

It feels as if now more than ever, the world needs to prepare future leaders who are formed in the values that Prep is uniquely qualified to instill. By volunteering for the Grand Gala—and this very special rendition of it—I’m fortunate enough to have a chance to give back to Prep in a unique way. Efforts like the Grand Gala help ensure that Prep remains affordable to young men from all different backgrounds. This diversity and exposure to people with different views, beliefs and backgrounds helped expand my worldview while continually reinforcing God’s call for us to love and serve others. I know, as you know, that it continues to do so for a new generation of young men today. I’m grateful for everyone who has shared in heeding the call to support this year’s Grand Gala.
—Stephen Spiewak, ’03
Welcome to the Grand(est) Gala! It is absolutely amazing and a testament to Prep generosity that this year we are hosting more than 600 Prep alumni, family, and friends at our largest Gala yet! I was honored when first asked to serve as the young alumni co-chair for the 2020 Gala, only for the pandemic to force the Galas in 2020 and 2021 to go virtual. While it was inspiring to see how quickly and resoundingly the Prep community came together to support Prep virtually during the last two challenging years, I was beyond excited to be asked back as a co-chair in 2022. It is so good to see so many classmates, friends, faculty and staff live and in person at the Liberty Science Center tonight. Over the years, the Prep Gala has played such an important role in raising funds for Prep as both the school and the city it calls home have continued to evolve. I graduated from Prep in 2009 and found myself back in Jersey City as a resident in 2015. I have had a front row seat to the transformational changes that have enhanced and elevated the Prep experience beyond anything I could have imaged just over a decade ago. While Prep finds itself on firm footing for its 150th anniversary, the only way it can continue to advance into its next 150 years is by partnering with generous supporters, like all those participating in this year’s Gala. I am humbled and grateful to each and every one of you who have joined us at Liberty Science Center, and those who are participating online in the silent auction. Every dollar raised has an impact, so be sure to keep the bids coming! Last but not least, I’d like to thank my fellow co-chairs and the entire Prep staff, especially Dalma Santana, for putting in a tremendous amount of work to ensure this year’s Gala is one to remember. Cheers and Let’s Go Prep!
—Craig Styles, ’09
It’s my honor to co-chair this year’s Saint Peter’s Prep Gala. I first would like to thank all of you who are here tonight and have donated so generously. As we know, this generosity is what helps Prep continue their goal of educating young men not only in the classroom, but how to become Men for Others. As an alum, class of ’93, I experienced this for myself. And I continue to stay involved and connected with events like this, and I can see that the mission is still consistent and strong. As each year passes, there are new students who are fortunate enough to experience Prep. I am proud that this brotherhood continues to grow and thrive. I would also like to thank Dr. Michael Gomez, ’91, the faculty, staff, and coaches for their commitment and dedication. I am very proud of how they continue maintain traditional values of Prep, while evolving with the times. I appreciate the efforts of my co-chairs for their hard work and coordination. A special thank you to Dalma Santana for spearheading the Gala and making sure each detail is perfect. I hope everyone has a fantastic evening and look forward to celebrating Prep with all of you.
—T.J. Sullivan, ’93
Welcome to the biggest celebration in Prep’s long and storied history. When we were asked to be co-chairs of this “Grand” event, we were honored—because Prep has been such a large part of our family for decades—and a bit nervous because of the importance of the event. This milestone occasion is more than a dinner party with beautiful people and great prizes. It is also evidence that Prep, and the Jesuit tradition it promotes, is timeless. Our communities will always need the “men for others” that Prep forges within its walls, and nights like tonight will ensure that it continues. We would like to say that we worked extremely hard to make this night happen. That we were up late making phone calls and sending emails to guests and donors. That we were organizing gift collection parties just so this event could be great. But that was Dalma. Ms. Dalma Santana spearheaded this celebration from the beginning. Without her guidance, many of us would have been lost at sea. We thank her, and many other Prep staff and parents, for their efforts and support. Now it’s time to enjoy the evening. Celebrate like you’re at a party that’s been 150 years in the making, because you are! If you’re a parent, connect with parents who may become friends for life. Maybe you’re one of the great alumni who maintain a connection with Prep for life, and maybe you find yourself explaining to friends and others why you are more involved with your high school than you are with your college, why you follow Prep football more than college football. We heard the best description of this connection at our eldest son’s accepted students’ dinner. It was recited by a then-senior at Prep: “From the outside looking in, you can’t understand it. From the inside looking out you can’t explain it.”Embrace this moment and... Let’s Go Prep!

It’s hard to believe nearly four years have passed since Fr. Tony Azzarto, S.J. retired from working at Prep full-time. First of all, it’s hard to believe the time has gone so quickly. But more to the point, it’s hard to believe he’s retired at all, because he’s still woven into the fabric of the Prep community! Even as the pandemic has sometimes limited his travel from his home base at Fordham in the Bronx, Fr. Azzarto has continued his decades-long ministry of presence, praying with and supporting Prep students, alumni, faculty and staff, and their families at every opportunity— virtually, when necessary, but in person whenever possible. Fr. Azzarto is living proof of the old saying that half of everything in life is just showing up...and if you’re the winning bidder, Fr. Azzarto will indeed show up, in person, at a mutually agreed date and time, to celebrate Mass with your friends and family.
Rev. Anthony Azzarto, S.J.
THE MAINE EVENT!
Find out why Kennebunkport, Maine, is one of America’s most enduring and beloved summer destinations with a 4th of July holiday stay in this beautiful 1911 home with wraparound porch, set on an expansive, quintessentially Maine property. Leslie and Neil Rohorbacker, P’25 have generously donated the use of their vacation home for the week of July 2-9, 2022. The house features 6 comfortable, spacious bedrooms, 4.5 baths, a fully stocked kitchen, indoor dining space for 8 and a large deck with dining table for 10, plus a propane grill, air conditioning, and plenty of beach chairs and umbrellas. With 6 bikes, 3 kayaks, 2 standup paddle boards, cornhole toss, and 4 square volleyball, there’s fun for the whole family on-site. But when you’re ready to head out, you’re within walking distance of the beach, town center, resturants, and shopping...not to mention incomparable sunsets! The house sits on Chick’s Creek, which leads to the Kennebunk River and ocean marina, so launching your favorite water toys is a breeze, too! BYO WINE EXPERT TO CORTO!
In a few short years, Corto—co-founded by Drew Buzzio, ’03—has become a favorite in the Jersey City restaurant scene for its focus on local ingredients, local staff, and seasonal Italian fare that is both elegant and unpretentious. Corto encourages patrons to bring their own wines, but your dinner for six will go a step further, as you bring your own wine expert! Anthony Giglio, P’23—one of our auctioneers this evening!—will join you to curate wines to match each course from Chef Matt Moschella, and provide information throughout dinner on these pairings. Anthony uses storytelling to motivate imbibers to trust their own tastes and relax the rules. With his witty, laid-back style, he has been a featured speaker at numerous festivals, around the world, including the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen, Pebble Beach Food & Wine, and NYC Wine & Food.
Mr. and Mrs. Drew D. Buzzio, ’03; CORTO; Mr. and Ms. Anthony Giglio, P’23 Mutually agreeable Tuesday - Thursday evening, through June 2022. Gratuity not included (and much appreciated).
