Legends of Prep XI

Ana García

“As a modern language teacher for more than 40 years – six of them as department chair – she guided students on a journey that began in the classroom, but transcended cultures and continents.”

As the story of Saint Peter’s Prep entered its second century, a new chapter was ready to be written. In the beginning, Prep was an “all-male” school not just among its students, but among the faculty and administration as well. Over time, women had arrived at Grand & Warren as office staff, and since 1948, Katie Collins (a 1997 Legends inductee) had been a fixture of the Prep library. But it was in the fall of 1972 that the first women stepped to the front of the Prep classroom as full-time teachers.

Among those three trailblizers was Ana García. And while she might be apt to shrug at that label (“I’ve never seen myself as that. I just think it was good for the school to realize that we women can do the job...” she told Prep Magazine in 2012), the record shows that she has earned it in far more ways than one. As a modern language teacher for more than 40 years – six of them as department chair – she guided students on a journey that began in the classroom, but transcended cultures and continents. Ana took her inspiration as a teacher from the veteran Jesuit and lay teachers she studied with at Saint Peter’s College, and worked with at Saint Peter’s Prep. “They were men full of life who had faced war, concentration camps, and other obstacles, and yet they came in each day embodying the verb to live,” she said. “I lived each day that I walked into my class, and gave my students the same education those master teachers gave me.” Ana’s students would have ample opportunity to live the material, as her quarterly cultural outings brought them face-to-face with Hispanic art, music, literature, and drama. Her summer study abroad programs in Spain, beginning in 2000, immersed students in a new culture. Her annual Christmas dinners, bringing together students, parents, and alumni, were a celebration of the Prep family of which she was such an integral part. She encouraged her students to live actively and intentionally, with a clear sense of self. Ask any of the thousands who passed through her classroom, and they will surely recall the parable of the chicken and the eagle that brought that crucial lesson to life.

Her influence as a “master teacher” in her own right reached beyond Grand & Warren. She created Prep’s first Spanish curriculum for native speakers, and demonstrated that model to her colleagues at the JSEA Colloquium and the convention of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. And her influence in the Prep community lives on beyond her 2013 reirement, as she remains present and active among Prep alumni, especially those near her Florida home.

Ana’s accolades and awards – founder of the Alba-Dawn of Day Scholarship Fund, recipient of Bene Merenti and Insignis Awards from Prep, recognition from the Congressional Youth Leadership Council, two Middle States awards for Outstanding Service to Secondary Education, just to name a few – are too many to list here, and tonight we add one more. But it is a tribute of a different sort that truly captures the essence of what Ana García has meant to the life and mission of Saint Peter’s Prep – the simple nickname that persisted among generations of students: Mamá.

Legends of Prep XI

Jerry Sheehan, ’48 “Tonight...we thank him for inspiring us all to ‘think big’ and to share our gifts in the benefit of others.”

Legends of Prep celebrates those who have a profound positive impact upon Saint Peter’s Prep and its mission. One would be hard pressed to envision a single alumnus, spearheading a single initiative, that meets that critereon more emphatically than Jerry Sheehan and his namesake Sheehan Academic Scholarships. The program had its genesis in an early 2009 visit by then-Prep president Bob Reiser, S.J. to Jerry’s office, to thank him for his recent generosity, and provide an update on life at Grand & Warren. When the conversation shifted to ways Jerry might support the school’s capital projects, this longtime financial support of Prep was receptive. But rather than bricks and mortar, he had something very special in mind: a new and unique merit-based scholarship program that, over the next decade, would attract the best and brightest students to Prep. Beyond their record of academic achievement, these should be scholars with “fire in the belly,” fully committed to getting the most out of their Jesuit education.

With the encouragement of Jerry’s friend from both their Prep and Holy Cross days, Earle Markey, S.J., ’49, the truly transformational Sheehan Scholarship Program was born. Jerry would provide nearly $12 million to fund students beginning with the entering Class of ’15, and continuing through the graduation of the Class of ’22, covering all tuition and fees, as well as extensive enrichment opportunities.

Today, six years following that initial meeting, the Sheehan Scholarship program is fully integrated into Prep’s DNA, with 67 young men currently attending Prep as “Sheehan Scholars.” The initial cohort of 17 Scholars graduated this past June and are continuing their education at a number of the nation’s top universities, bringing Jerry’s vision fully to fruition. Jerry’s own commitment to excellence began in the classroom at Our Lady of Victories School, Jersey City, followed by impressive academic careers at Prep and the College of the Holy Cross. He served as an officer with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean conflict and began his professional career in 1956 as a route salesman for his father-in-law’s beer distribution company, L. Knife & Son, Inc. Jerry purchased the company in 1964, and since that time this family-owned enterprise has grown to include 19 beer distribution centers in the United States, with Jerry as its truly “hands-on” president.

Jerry also is the founder of The Sheehan Family Foundation, which supports education projects, open space preservation and watershed protection. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the College of the Holy Cross, the Board of Trustees of the Campaign for Catholic Schools, and the Board of Directors of the Beer Distributors of Massachusetts; also, he previously sat on the Board of Directors of The Rockland Trust Company. He and his wife Maureen (who shares Jerry’s passion for Prep and its students) have eight children and twenty grandchildren.

Jerry’s extraordinary career has earned him many titles: entrepreneur, philanthropist, visionary, and so forth. Tonight, we add one more, “Legend of Prep,” and thank him for inspiring us all to “think big” and to share our gifts in the benefit of others.

Legends of Prep XI

Rich Hansen, P’03,’09 “I have known Rich for well in excess of 35 years, and he was then, as he remains now, the most grounded of men...”

“I have known Rich for well in excess of 35 years,” wrote one nominator, “and he was then, as he remains now, the most grounded of men...” That’s high praise indeed, because in the context of Rich Hansen’s outstanding record as Prep’s athletic director and head football coach, it would be easy – and quite understandable – to develop an inflated ego. But that’s not something Rich would want to see in his athletes, and it’s certainly not something he would do himself.

In his 32 years at Prep – 27 as head coach and AD – the record speaks for itself. His football teams have racked up 21 Hudson County championships, four NJSIAA titles (the most recent coming last year) and 18 top-20 statewide rankings. Three #1 tri‑state rankings, and three top-15 national rankings underscore the power of Prep Football under the guidance of his steady hand – a penchant for consistency backed up by a 103-game (as of this writing) win streak against Hudson County opponents, dating back to 2000. As for personal accolades, they begin with 18 (and 10 consecutive) “Hudson County Coach of the Year” awards, and include state and city proclamations and citations, awards for community service, two New York Giants Coach of the Week awards, invitations to coach in all-star games at the state, regional, and national levels. His standing among his peers is reflected in his tenure as president of the HCIAL, position on the NJSIAA Football Committee, frequent speaking engagements at football clinics and coaching workshops, and writings in coaching periodicals like Football Quarterly, Athletic Management, and National Coaches magazine. It’s an impressive picture of a truly transformative head coach, who surpassed Bill Cochrane as Prep football’s winningest in 2014, and who has worked tirelessly to restore the program to an elite level and keep it there throughout his tenure. But that’s only the beginning of the story. In his parallel role as athletic director, Rich has overseen unparalleled growth and success across the board. Overall, Marauder teams have compiled an astounding 300+ championships, and there are now 41 total teams competing in 19 different sports, with a staff of 73 coaches. His efforts have earned him Hudson County Athletic Director of the Year on 3 occasions. And yet, for all his success, Rich remains an approachable, caring, and humble presence in the community. He has mentored hundreds of Prep men who have passed through his teams, and can be counted on to bring warmth and good humor to any gathering of his Prep colleagues. As a highly visible public “face” of Saint Peter’s Prep, he has always represented the school with dignity and honor – and he expects nothing less of each athlete who dons a maroon uniform. Rich and Elisse, his wife of more than 30 years, are the proud parents of two daughters, Nicole and Kelsey, and two sons, Rich, ’03 (chair of Prep’s Physical Education department and Prep Football defensive coordinator) and Dan, ’09 (a former Prep Football captain). They have four grandsons: Braydon, Bryce, Daniel, and Braxton.

Legends of Prep XI

Paul Schaetzle, ’71

“Since Paul arrived at Grand & Warren from Our Lady of Victories School in 1967, it would seem that at any Prep event, on campus or beyond, one could scan the crowd and be sure to spot him in their midst. ”

As Prep’s alumni chaplain, Tony Azzarto, S.J., welcomed young alumni to JUG Night last fall, he made some introductions: “This is Fr. Ken Boller, S. J.; he’s in charge of the school. Next we have Bob Colacurcio; he’s in charge of the Alumni Association. And then there’s Paul Schaetzle; he’s in charge of everything!” He was exaggerating, of course, but only slightly. Since Paul arrived at Grand & Warren from Our Lady of Victories School in 1967, it would seem that at any Prep event, on campus or beyond, one could scan the crowd and be sure to spot him in their midst. Paul has worked as an insurance adjuster since 1976, and is presently Executive General Adjuster at York Risk Services Group, based in Jersey City. His duties involve the adjustment of large commercial property claims on behalf of a number of major insurance companies.

His experience at disaster scenes served Prep well when Hurricane Sandy struck at the very heart of Grand & Warren. Paul was literally the first one back in the buildings the morning after Sandy, along with fellow Prep Trustee Ralph Aquila, ’75. He dived in head first, bringing pumps and generators, and then working with a dedicated group of the Prep community to marshal all available resources to restore operations.

Despite his busy schedule, there is seemingly no limit to Paul’s time for Prep. He has served on the Alumni Board since 1995, chaired JUG Night for many years, and worked with Fr. Azzarto and the Alumni Spirituality Committee to plan and execute a varied menu of events. But for Paul, the most rewarding role is that of Class Chair for ’71, working every Phonathon, keeping the class up to date on Prep news and just being there when a classmate has a moment of triumph or sorrow. His efforts have not gone unnoticed; Paul was the recipient of the inaugural Pride & Glory Award in 2008. Then-president Bob Reiser, S. J. tapped Paul to join Prep’s Board of Trustees in 2010, and at the request of Bill Ahearn, whom we also honor tonight, he became chair of the Master Planning Committe. The Moriarty Science Center, rapid restoration of the campus from Sandy’s wrath, renovations to Mulry and Hogan Halls and now the impending ground breaking for a new field house are testament to the committee’s hard work.

When not working on the latest insurance claim or for Prep, Paul can be found at the Gong Club, Jersey City’s fire buff organization. The volunteer group operates a canteen vehicle serving refreshments to firefighters, police officers, emergency medical personnel and fire victims throughout Hudson County. For the past 43 years, he has consistently been one of the top responders to the fires and other emergencies requiring the Gong Club’s services. In addition, Paul has served as Treasurer of the International Fire Buff Associates since 1995. The IFBA, an international organization of fire buff groups similar to the Gong Club, presented Paul with the “Henry N. Wilwers Fire Buff of the Year Award” in 2002. In his “spare” time, Paul recently converted the former Jersey City Engine 17 firehouse into his residence; the very firehouse where his father, a 33-year JCFD veteran, once served!

Legends of Prep XI

Jack Campion

“For Prep alumni spanning four decades, it takes just three little letters – Sir – to evoke a flood of memories ...”

It was a certain “Billy Shakespeare,” in a certain play about a melancholic Danish prince, who taught us that brevity is the soul of wit. It’s fitting, then, that for Prep alumni spanning four decades, it takes just three little letters – Sir – to evoke a flood of memories of the man who so colorfully brought Hamlet and the rest of the classics to life. There was the underhand toss of a dictionary to a befuddled student; the bold pronouncements (“Not my Hamlet, sirs!”); the discovery of a new way to encounter literature; and, for so many, the basis for the writing and critical thinking skills that will set a Prep man apart long after he leaves Grand & Warren. Gather a few of Jack Campion’s former students in a room, and it won’t be long before they begin to remark how easy another challenge seemed in comparison to the infamous “Hamlet paper.” One assignment, one question: “What is Hamlet’s Problem?” and a whole marking period’s research and writing poured into one magnum opus. It prefigured (“Foreshadowing, sirs! Foreshadowing!”) the scope and nature of the work students would be asked to complete in college – and beyond – pushing them to evaluate sources critically, synthesize new ideas from old ones, work at their own pace in service of a firm deadline, support a thesis with well-crafted arguments, and, in the process, achieve something that might have seemed daunting at the beginning of the process.

His assignments were an invitation to rise to meet high expectations – expectations he maintained for himself, as well. Reading the literary criticism attempted by teenage boys is an evening activity not for the faint of heart, but Jack didn’t just read and grade; he provided useful commentary in the margins and in person when he returned each paper. When it came to that dreaded Hamlet paper, it wasn’t enough to caution students to cite their sources carefully; he meticulously checked each citation himself, and offered students the opportunity to explain and correct any discrepancies. Just as legendary as Jack’s work in the classroom were his tireless efforts in directing dozens of Prep plays, in addition to productions at Holy Family Academy and the Bayonne Community Theater. His years at the helm of Prep Dramatics, succeeding fellow Legend Jack Casey, gave rise to the now-traditional Dramatics Homecoming that accompanies the fall play.

Since his retirement from the classroom in 2013, he has increased his involvement in the Prep alumni community. He remains a mainstay at JUG Night and the Milestone Reunion, and now frequently travels to Prep’s regional gatherings in Boston and Washington. Jack and Jane, his wife of 48 years, are the proud parents of Joan and Katie, and grandparents of Nina and Daphne. In addition to their travels in Europe, they now frequently visit Tulsa, Oklahoma, to spend time with their grandchildren.

For decades, students called Jack Campion “Sir” because it was the way he addreessed them. It was a gesture of the respect he had earned by showing his respect for them. Tonight, we replicate that gesture by calling him “Legend of Prep.”

Legends of Prep XI

Bill Ahearn, ’75, P’01 “Bill not only loved Prep; he lived Prep.’”

At the previous two Legends of Prep ceremonies, Bill Ahearn brought his inimitable style and humor to the podium, handling the hosting duties with aplomb as we celebrated some of the names he joins tonight. It can be hard to fathom that the Prep community lost a man so full of life and so full of love for his alma mater, just a few weeks after that 2012 event. Like so many Jersey City stories, Bill’s began in the Margaret Hague Hospital. He came to Prep by way of Saint John’s on Kennedy Boulevard, and though he would go on to both bachelors’s and master’s degrees from Fordham before launching a long and distinguished career in corporate communications, it was at Grand & Warren where Bill’s heart always remained. Those who remember and celebrate Bill speak often of his commitment to Prep. It started when he was still a student. “While most of the guys in our neighborhood came home from school, Bill spent many hours after school at Prep,” recalled a childhood friend, who attended Hudson Catholic but would later join Bill as a proud Prep parent. He took on some early leadership roles, chairing the dance committee and serving as editor of the Petrean during his senior year.

Bill and wife Seton (herself daugther, sister, cousin, and eventually mother to a legion of Prep alumni) would make their home in Cranford – less than 20 miles from Grand & Warren, but seemingly a world away during the 1980s and 1990s. Undeterred by distance, he would ultimately be instrumental in drawing Prep’s “center of gravity” westward toward Union County, his enthusiasm for the school spreading to his friends and neighbors like wildfire. There was nothing he would not do for Prep. “No one ever turned Bill down, because we knew he was doing more than we ever could,” wrote one nominator.

Bill remained active as a class chair and Phonathon volunteer, and when son Liam, ’01, boarded the Raritan Valley Line en route to Prep, Bill and Seton became active in the Prep Parents’ Association, eventually serving as chairs. He would go on to spend two terms on the board of trustees, chairing the Annual Fund and the Advancement Committee. In 2008, Bill and Seton chaired the first 144 Grand Gala, which has since raised nearly $3 million for tuition assistance to Prep families. But it was perhaps in his final role at Prep that Bill left his greatest mark. After succeeding his brother-in-law (and fellow Legend) Jack Caulfield, ’71, P’00,’03 as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Bill oversaw – and took a personal interest in – the completion of O’Keefe Commons and the Moriarty Science Center, an increased focus on Prep’s Jesuit identity, strengthened faculty retention and development, and growth in financial aid and curriculum development.

Bob Reiser, S.J., who worked closely with Bill throughout his own tenure as Prep’s president, put it succinctly: “Bill not only loved Prep; he lived Prep.” Tonight we affirm something Bill must have always sensed: Prep loves him back, and lives more fully for having known him.

Since Bill and I met, while he was a student at Prep, he exemplified the Prep mission, living as a man of competence, conscience and compassion, in his work, his service to the community, and his dedication to family and friends. We know that losing him was felt, not just by our immediate circle, but by the larger St. Peter’s community, who knew well his commitment to the Prep legacy and the ideals of Jesuit education. Every day we celebrate him as a legend, and are honored to be with all of you celebrating him tonight. Congratulations Bill, and all of the 2015 Prep legends.
