LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Alumni and Friends, It has been an exciting semester on The Hill! As I finish up my second year as President, I continue to be inspired by our current students and our accomplished alumni. Homecoming was amazing this year, and I enjoyed meeting so many of you and hearing your wonderful stories about the importance and impact of your time on The Hill. In this issue, you will see some pictures and stories about the special events from Homecoming: the dedication of Viscardi Hall; the funeral of Walsh Hall; the dedication of the Meditation Garden from the Class of 1973; Hall of Fame Awards Dinner; Bay Boil; and many Golden Badger and Alumni events. You will also find many examples of philanthropy and support for our beloved College. I have enjoyed meeting many of you as I have traveled around the country, or as you have visited events on The Hill. I truly appreciate your love and support of Spring Hill College. My hope is that we can match your passion with meaningful and rewarding ways to be part of our success at Spring Hill College and to be part of our exciting future. In closing, I hope that you are blessed with a wonderful holiday season!

In Gratitude,

Mary H. Van Brunt, PhD President Spring Hill College

HONORING A LEGACY OF PHILANTHROPY In recognition of the Barter family's philanthropy, New Hall has been renamed Viscardi Hall. This new name pays tribute to the highly-revered Jesuit, Father Christopher Viscardi, SJ. Fr. Viscardi has devoted over 40 years of service to Spring Hill College. During his time, he has made memorable impressions on students, alumni, and the entire Mobile Catholic community. He served for several years as the Division Chair of Philosophy and Theology. A COMMITMENT TO GIVING The Barter family’s dedication to Spring Hill College is perhaps most vividly demonstrated by their philanthropy. Over the years, the family has made substantial contributions to various College initiatives, including scholarships and facility enhancements. “What we say about Spring Hill is that we develop students in mind, body, and spirit. Any good school is going to develop students in mind and body. Jesuit schools or other religious schools do a wonderful job of developing the spirit. Spring Hill helps students to become people for others, people of service, people who give back to their communities and to the world. This college will always do that, so our goal is to help the College to remain vibrant and do as much as we can to continue accomplishing that goal,” said John Barter. One of their most notable contributions is the Barter Student Center, a vital hub for student life and activities. The student in guiding the College through various phases of

growth—principles that have long been at the heart of Spring Hill's mission. “I look forward to continuing to develop new programs and opportunities. I look forward to getting to know more faculty and staff. I worked with a really powerful program called Ignatian Colleagues Program that a number of faculty and staff have participated in over the years. So I meet with them, those who have finished the program, because they’ve gotten an intensive experience of the spirituality of St. Ignatius and its history. I am going to rely on them to help me to develop programs and opportunities on campus,” said Fr. Steele. For Fr. Steele, coming back to Spring Hill is a profound and emotional experience. John’s professional success was matched by his personal qualities—a devoted Catholic, proud of his Irish heritage, and deeply patriotic. He was a man of character, intelligence and compassion, always giving back to those in need and nurturing close relationships with his family. John’s love for Marita, and the life they built together, was one of his greatest sources of pride. Their family included two children—daughter Kara and son John— and three grandsons. His devotion to family was evident in everything he did, and this bond with his loved ones became the true measure of his legacy. After John’s passing, when reflecting on their shared

The Birth of Walsh Hall

T

The inception of Walsh Hall traces back to 1945 when Spring Hill, driven by a vision to accommodate a grow-

ing student body and enhance campus facilities, embarked on a transformative journey. Designed by the renowned architect duo Martin and Barnes, Walsh Hall was envisioned as a modern, multi-purpose building that would serve as a residence hall for students and a venue for College events. With its elegant brick facade and spacious interiors, it became a symbol of Spring Hill’s commitment to providing a robust educational environment. The building was named in honor of Father William J. Walsh, a revered Jesuit priest who was instrumental in the College’s development during the 20th century. Under his guidance, Spring Hill College expanded its academic programs and reinforced its mission of fostering intellectual and personal growth among its students.

A NEW ERA: THE HEALTH AND SCIENCE INNOVATION CENTER Spring Hill College is on the brink of an exciting transformation. Scheduled to break ground in 2025, the new Health and Science Innovation Center will rise where Walsh Hall once stood. This state-of-the-art facility represents a leap forward in the College's mission to integrate cutting-edge technology and scientific research with its educational programs. The development of the new center has garnered significant support from various entities. A generous grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has provided an impressive $36,615,031 in funding, with 5% of the total financed through non-governmental sources. Additionally, the City of Mobile and Mobile County each contributed $750,000 to aid in the development of this groundbreaking facility. This collaborative funding effort underscores the importance of community and governmental support in advancing educational and healthcare initiatives. The new center will be a vision of progress, designed to foster innovation in health and science through collaborative research, advanced learning opportunities, and community engagement. It will house laboratories, simulation centers, and interactive learning spaces. These additions will set the stage for future breakthroughs and enrich the student experience at Spring Hill College.

What's Happening

around The Hill Alumni News 2024 Big life events, retirement, or career change, family expansion, and more alumni news.

Honoring a Legacy of Service in Law Mary Lauren Lemmon (Class of 1985), retired Chief Judge of the 29th Judicial District Division D in Louisiana, stepped down after 15 years of distinguished service in St. Charles Parish. Elected to the position, she followed in the footsteps of her parents—her father, Harry Lemmon, served as a Justice on the Louisiana Supreme Court for over two decades, while her mother, Mary Ann Vial Lemmon, is a United States District Court Judge. Mary Lauren Lemmon's career reflects a family legacy of excellence in the legal profession.

Psychologist in the Fleet

Leadership Recognition

Lt. Courtney M. Gibson (Class of 2013) is currently serving aboard the USS Harry S. Truman, a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, as the ship’s psychologist. A member of the Medical Service Corps, Lt. Gibson earned both her master’s and doctorate in psychology after graduating in 2009. She credits her Jesuit undergraduate education for her ability to navigate the complex challenges of providing care to military personnel.

Joe Zarzaur (Class of 1993), a Board-Certified Civil Trial Lawyer and founder of Zarzaur Law, P.A., has once again been selected as one of Florida’s Super Lawyers®. This prestigious distinction is awarded based on peer nominations, achievements, and rigorous evaluations, further solidifying his reputation as a top attorney in the state.

Veterinary Corps Achievements Dr. Ginger Hammett (Class of 2012), a Major in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps, recently completed a three-year residency in pathology at the Department of Defense Joint Pathology Center in Washington D.C. She is now a board-certified Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists and serves as a veterinary pathologist at Joint Base San Antonio, TX, after seven years of service as a general veterinarian in the Army.

Giving Back Through Baseball Joseph 'Fish King' Nero (Class of 1985) was honored with the Giving Your Best Award by Augusta High School for his charitable contributions to youth sports. Known for offering free baseball clinics and hosting fish fries to raise funds for team uniforms and equipment, Nero is committed to helping young athletes develop their skills and pursue college scholarships.
