American Public Square to bring civil, fact-based discourse to our community.

Of particular note was, “Lifelines: Preventing Teen Suicide,” that brought together: • Nearly 1,000 in-person audience members • 12,900 Facebook Live viewers, and • 30+ suicide prevention organizations for a resource fair. EDUCATING TOMORROW’S LEADERS
In alignment with our mission, we interacted with more than 200 high school students throughout the Metro through our APS Student Initiative to deliver civility training, mock panels and community events. ORGANIZATIONAL GROWTH

A NOTE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND COO I first learned about American Public Square at a Junior League of Greater Kansas City Conference, where I witnessed a mock panel. I was hooked! Immediately, I understood how to apply American Public Square-style Rules of Civility to my own life. It is now my great honor to serve as Executive Director and COO of this wonderful organization! BUILDING COMMUNITY IN A DIGITAL SOCIETY
In our rapidly changing society, technology, social media and the 24-hour news cycle have transformed the way we learn about our world and interact with one another. The very human need to belong, to connect and to build community has diminished.

REVERSING A POLARIZED PEOPLE
At American Public Square, we strive to intentionally: • Re-build human bonds, • Re-weave the frayed and tattered fabric of our community, and • Re-commit to ourselves and our neighbors. In order to address problems that are complex, multi-faceted and not easily solvable, we need informed individuals and communities willing to thoughtfully examine, discuss and explore issues from multiple perspectives. When we come together as a community, we begin to repair broken bonds. We come closer to the ideal of disagreeing not less, but better. In so doing, we heal and improve our communities. ABOUT AMERICAN PUBLIC SQUARE AT JEWELL (APS) At American Public Square at Jewell we believe that the foundation of a strong democracy is in differing opinions, diverse viewpoints, and well-reasoned arguments. That is the focus of our programming. We bring together high-quality panelists to have civil, fact-based conversations on the most important and divisive issues in our community and our country. In doing so, we demonstrate that disagreement does not have to equal disunion. Those who participate in and attend our programs agree to be respectful and to abide by our basic Rules of Civility.

PARTNERSHIP WITH WILLIAM JEWELL COLLEGE
In August 2019, American Public Square proudly formed a partnership with William Jewell College, the new academic home for APS. The mission of William Jewell College, to educate our community to ask reflective questions, apply critical thought and act with purpose, aligns perfectly with the ideals set forth by American Public Square. We are excited about the opportunities for joint programming, education and civic engagement. While APS continues to work from our offices in midtown KC, we also maintain a presence in an American Public Square office on the Jewell campus in Liberty. Additionally, as you may have noted, we are now delighted to be known as “American Public Square at Jewell.” This partnership enables APS to continue to grow and fulfill our mission within the Greater Kansas City community and beyond.

CIVILITY TOOLS We use the “CIVILITY TOOLS� described below at American Public Square events to ensure conversations are substantive, respectful, and based on facts. MODERATED DISCUSSIONS
APS events are moderated by an objective facilitator who ensures each panelist is given due time to represent their position. Questions are tough but fair, and allow free flow of conversation. FACT SHEETS
APS complies a fact sheet in advance of each panel. This is reviewed beforehand by the panelists and distributed to the audience, which ensures the discussion begins from a "common well" of information. CIVILITY BELLS
These are made available for the audience to ring when panelists wade into false, overly dramatic or hyper-emotional territory. When a bell rings, the speaker must stop talking. FACT CHECKERS
Our programs feature real-time fact checkers to confirm the validity of comments made during the program. Audience members are encouraged to submit specific fact checks throughout the discussion. ROVING REPORTER
Our Roving Reporter, usually a representative from a credible local media outlet, is engaged during the program to gather and curate audience questions. NO APPLAUSE
APS has a rule that no applause is allowed during a program except at the beginning and end of the event. This ensures perspective is not swayed one way or another in the midst of the discussion. SO WHAT? NOW WHAT?
At the end of each event, panelists are given the opportunity to make closing statements in the form of answers to these questions. This allows our experts to restate their position on the topic at hand in a way that is actionable for the audience.
