Symptoms of arthritis There are many different symptoms of arthritis and the symptoms you experience will vary depending on the type of arthritis you have. However, common arthritic symptoms include:

Types of arthritis There are many types of arthritis, the condition which causes inflammation and pain in a joint.

Did you know?

The main two types are Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis which together cover 90% of people affected. There are other less common types such as psoriatic arthritis, gout and ankylosing spondylitis which affects the spine.

Arthritis has been around for millions of years and even affected dinosaurs. Researchers believe that skeletal remains from humans living around 4500BC show signs of the disease.

The medical treatment of each type will be different but many of the effects on everyday life, pain, tiredness, depression and loss of ability are the same for all types of arthritis.

Today in the UK around 10 million people have arthritis.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and it affects about 8.5 million people in the UK. It is age-related (the majority of sufferers are over 50) but it can develop at any age as a result of an injury or joint-related condition. The cartilage (connective tissue) between the bones gradually wastes away leading to painful rubbing of bone on bone in the joints, mainly the hands, spine, knees and hips. Treatment includes painkillers, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or Corticosteroids. Losing weight can help. In severe cases joint replacement (arthroplasty), joint fusion (arthrodesis) or realignment of a bone (osteotomy) may be carried out.

Who is there to help? The charity Arthritis Research UK recommends the following sequence of actions for back pain with your GP helping you to navigate the pathway. 1 Try to increase or maintain the amount you walk (or swim) 2 Join a class to help you maintain your suppleness-Yoga, Tai Chi, Pilates or the Alexander Technique 3 Find a trainer at a local leisure centre or wellness centre 4 Consult a physiotherapist 5 See a specilaist arthritis service at the hospital

Rheumatoid arthritis is less common, more severe, and affects about 400,000 people in the UK. Women are 3 times more likely than men to suffer from the condition, which often starts between the ages of 40 and 50. The bodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s immune system attacks and destroys the affected joints, causing pain and swelling to occur. This can lead to a reduction in movement. The breakdown of bone and cartilage is likely to result in pain in the joints, tenderness and stiffness. Symptoms are often worse in the morning. Treatment takes the form of painkillers, disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs), physiotherapy and regular exercise.

Who is there to help?

The GP is the first port of call. Ask to see a consultant rheumatologist in the hospital specialist service. Modern drugs have had an amazing impact on rheumatoid arthritis but it can take time to find the right combination of drugs for the individual person. Physiotherapists can help to cope with the muscle weakness and joint stiffness that can result from RA. Inactivity can make joints even stiffer and more difficult to move. It is now known that activity has a very important therapeutic part to play Sometimes certain activities of daily living become impossible as a result of the joint problems, for example the ability to dress or to take the top off a jar of jam. Occupational Therapists have been trained to help people minimise the impact of disability and maximise their independence.

Activity Therapy There is now scientific evidence proving the benefits of walking, especially for anyone with arthritis. The evidence is clear that physical activity has a really important part to play not only in prevention of disease, but also in supporting people who have one or more long term conditions. Arthritis can make walking more difficult for some people, but it is of vital importance for those with arthritis to keep active and increase the amount they walk. Walking needs to be supplemented with other activities that focus on 3 other aspects of physical fitness that begin with the letter S – Strength, Suppleness and Skill. How much walking is beneficial?

Any increase in the amount you walk everyday is good for you. Walking briskly for 10 minutes a day is recommended for improved health. Start with 5 minutes and build to 10 if you can. But what is meant by walking ‘briskly’ and how will you know if you are walking briskly or not? Well, briskly means you can tell you are breathing a little more quickly than normal but are still able to carry on a conversation. If you want to know how long you have walked briskly we recommend the Active 10 app for people who have a smartphone. You can find it at www.nhs.uk/oneyou. If you are having difficulty walking you may need your medical treatment reviewed, or seek the advice of a physiotherapist. The support of others with similar health problems can be encouraging. Find out if there is a Ramblers Health Walk near you although you need to be able to walk a mile or two to join them. See our useful organisations contact list on page 45. Try to find a pair of shoes that are comfortable and supportive. Consider using a stick or a trekking pole, or even 2 for support. The simplest daily task or household chore is a big deal to someone who has arthritis in their hands or fingers. We have a range of products that can help make up for weak grip and lack of hand strength due to arthritis. l

A common tip if you are opening a glass jar with a metal lid is to put the metal lid of the jar under hot running water for a short period or invert the jar in a shallow amount of hot (not boiling) water in a bowl for a couple of minutes. This makes it easier to take the lid off, especially if you are using our anti-slip jar opener.

If you have weak grip in both hands a good tip when unscrewing a jar is to ensure that the base is secure at the same time as you are trying to unscrew the lid. Our Jar and bottle opener has 3 different sized apertures that hold the base of the jar still while you remove the lids - very helpful!

A mug or cup with a small curved handle pushes the fingers into awkward positions putting pressure onto painful joints. Try using our 2 handled mug that has 2 generous sized handles that give plenty of room for fingers while spreading the load over both hands.

Having trouble getting up and down stairs ? If you struggle to walk up or down stairs or steps then it may be that there is a piece of equipment to help you. Most of us have heard of stair lifts but are you aware of other devices such as stairclimbers, home lifts and stair supports?

Stair supports Stair supports provide extra safety and security when going up or down the stairs as you step up or down. The bar can be leant against on the descent down the stairs and used to pull oneself up on the ascent. Depending on which supplier you choose these can be fitted by someone competent in DIY or a fitting service can be arranged.

Stair climbers A stair climber is a less well known solution to getting up and down stairs. It is a portable ‘trolley’ fitted with rotating wheels so that it can be guided up or down stairs. The advantage of a stair climber is that you can take it with you wherever you go. You always need to have someone to guide the stair climber from behind, they do not need to be strong, as the motors of the stair climber do all the work.

Stair lifts A stair lift is a well-known way of staying independent in your home when you start to find that getting up the stairs is not as easy as it used to be. Attached to a rail that is fixed to your stairs, a stair lift can be installed within a matter of hours. There are different seats available to suit different users. Stair lifts are suitable for straight or curved stairs, there is even an outdoor version.

Home lift A home lift seems like a luxury you couldn’t afford – but you’d be surprised we certainly were!
