Our team of experts understand that 1 size does not fit all, which is why we demonstrate electric wheelchairs and scooters in your own home. We found that by trialling the wheelchair or scooter in the location it will be used, you can feel more confident that you have chosen a chair that suits you and is easy to use in your environment. Our home demonstrations help you to answer some of the key questions that are important to consider before investing in a wheelchair or scooter, like whether you can fit it in the boot of your car, get around your kitchen smoothly, and use the controls easily. Our team includes professionally qualified occupational therapists who can assess your specific needs and give expert advice on products which will suit you best. Our friendly and knowledgeable telephone advisers can help you every step of the way to ensure you make the perfect choice. We help you throughout the process which means our technicians are available to help set up, repair, and service your mobility equipment (fees apply for some of this work). If you change your mind you can return a product to us within 14 days, provided it has not been used. We also offer 3 monthsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; free insurance for powerchairs and scooters (see pg. 46). VAT Relief VAT relief is available on all of our electric wheelchairs and scooters, for anyone with a long-term health condition or chronic sickness. Simply tell our team over the telephone at the point of purchase and they will take you through a self-declaration, before removing the VAT from your final price.

Electric wheelchair or scooter? A buying guide What solution is right for you? Understanding whether an electric wheelchair or scooter is the right solution for you can be challenging. Consider whether it is physically suitable for you. For example, scooters tend to have limited adjustment in seating position when compared to a powerchair. Therefore, if you require specific seating angles or postural support, a powerchair may be a better option. You should also consider how youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be controlling the chair. Mobility scooters are usually controlled by a tiller, requiring both arms to steer. Whereas a powerchair will typically use a joystick on either the left or right hand side. Finally, how will you get into and out of it? Some mobility scooter seats rotate 90 degrees to allow an easier entry. Powerchairs may have a footplate to negotiate. Our specialists can recommend which is most suitable for you. Where are you going to use it? Having established whether a powerchair or scooter is physically right for you, you should also consider where and how you anticipate using it.

First, will it be in or out of your home, or both? Where the answer is in your home only, a scooter is less likely to be the right solution as it is longer and typically doesn’t have the same manoeuvrability as a powerchair. You should then consider the type of terrain you’re likely to use it on – speak to our team for more specific advice here – you may be surprised how versatile some mobility equipment can be. Finally, you should consider the type of distance you’re likely to cover. Some powerchairs are limited, whereas others and class 3 scooters can go much greater distances. Where are you storing it and how are you transporting it? Do you need it to fold or dismantle? We offer a large range of folding and demounting scooters and powerchairs. Generally, our customers want them to fold or dismantle for ease of transport, such as a car boot or airplane. You should also consider how you’ll get it into your car if necessary. Some powerchairs and scooters are light enough to lift, but others may require a hoist. The majority of our powerchairs can be hoisted (see page 45 for more information on hoists).

For those that are regular wheelchair users with larger, heavier equipment, small compact chairs are a great alternative for day trips and travel. Typically, these powerchairs dismantle, meaning they can go in the boot of a car – perfect for a day out. Plus, because they’re powered, the user has the freedom to go where they wish, and not be assisted. Small compact powerchairs are also great to use around the home as they can easily navigate hallways and door frames.

Prescribed Powerchairs When considering a prescribed powered chair: Prescribed power chairs are for those who have long term substantial and permanent mobility needs. They accommodate specific needs based on a clinical assessment by an Occupational Therapist. During an assessment for a prescribed wheelchair the following will be taken into consideration: Accurate measurements to ensure comfort and optimal seating position Pressure needs and appropriate pressure relieving cushion Postural needs and accessories required to maintain â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;goodâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; posture throughout the day Wheelchairâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability to assist you in completing functional tasks Home environment and accessibility of the wheelchair

How it works

Call Spring Chicken. If you feel a prescribed chair would be of benefit, you will be passed to an Occupational Therapist to discuss your needs.

Based on the telephone discussion, an assessment will be booked for an Occupational Therapist to complete a full clinical assessment at your home address or work.

The assessment may include a demonstration of equipment if, based on the original telephone discussion, a suitable wheelchair was identified to trial.

Following the assessment/trial you can make a decision on the chair and any accessories required.

Once the chair is ready it will be delivered and a handover will be completed with the Occupational Therapist and engineer, to set up to your exact requirements.

Occupational Therapy Service. What we can do for you: An occupational therapy assessment is often vital in ensuring the correct chair is provided. Beginning with a telephone assessment we will ascertain some basic information to ensure an OT assessment is right for you. Following this, we can complete a home assessment, where we will be able to assess in detail the requirements needed to ensure we can find the best possible solution for your functional needs. This assessment will allow us to discuss 1:1 what you require from your chair and what goals you would like to achieve, ensuring the assessment is fully tailored to your individual needs.

Wheelchair Powerpacks TGA Powerpacks are simple devices that fit manual wheelchairs to assist a carer to push the wheelchair from behind. The TGA Powerpacks fit almost every manual wheelchair on the market with the right adapter attachment kit.

Duo The Duo Wheelchair TGA Powerpack is for users who require further power – if you live in a hilly area, or you have a gravel driveway, then this is the model for you. It is fitted with a reverse function, which can be operated by a switch on the hand control.

Scooter buying guide Boot/Travel scooters (Class 2) They are lightweight and easy to fold or dismantle. They should fit easily into your car boot. Great for short trips to the shops or day trips out in the car. Plus, as some fold, they also make great companions for taking abroad – by plane or cruise. They have a maximum legal speed of 4mph.

Mid-range scooters (Class 2) The next step up. Mid-range or ‘pavement’ scooters also have a max speed of 4mph, though can offer a bit more stability and ruggedness. They’re usually more substantial than boot scooters, with larger ground clearance.

Large (Class 3) Being larger with a longer range (some up to 30 miles) these types of scooters are not as portable, as they have not been designed to be disassembled regularly. It is important to make sure you have somewhere dry and safe to store this type of scooter. With a maximum speed of 8mph, these scooters must be used on the road and registered with the DVLA.
