LAVISH DECORATING WINDOWS SINCE 1978 SPRINGCREST CURTAIN & BLINDS WINTER EDITION AUGUST 2013

This magazine is a guide on how to go about choosing the correct treatment for windows and how to then coordinating soft furnishings to pull your look together and make it your own. A bit like choosing clothes to suit your figure and then selecting the right accessories to set it off. This guide has something for everybody who doesn’t have the luxury of an expensive stylist to do it for them. And anyway, your home should be about you, reflect the personalities of the people who live in it – and who knows that the best? You of course! You know which rooms are going to be used and for what purpose, the people who will have to live with the décor. You may just need a little guidance to get started, but once you do start you will be amazed at how your creative juices will flow! Do you really want a copy cat sterile décor that looks like a display home? – An inviting home, that’s lovely to be in, always has layering – a history of the people who live in it. Marry those old pieces you can’t bear to part with by incorporating them in your décor so that they look like they belong. This will give you the confidence to start thinking... Having your photos on display, your favourite books, your children’s art work, that spectacular souvenir that reminds you of a wonderful holiday or experience. Some people know exactly what they want, they just need us to make their ideas a reality, and our reassurance that we will deliver exactly what they have in mind. Other people know what they don’t like, and just need a second opinion or guidance in selecting fabrics and a co-ordinated look that will suit their décor. And there are also people who have no idea where to start – and the thought of selecting anything is overwhelming and daunting. That’s where we can help – by guiding you to believe in yourself so that you end up making the final choice based on what you like, not what someone else has talked you into. This is designed to help you walk through the steps of decision making at your own pace, based on a logical order of where to start. At any time you can get us involved if you need help or reassurance! If you are building a new home, or renovating the ideal time to get us involved is right at the start at the planning stage. This way we can advise you if your builder needs to allow for the type of window furnishings you want. Often we liaise with the builder to ensure we can get good fixing behind plaster, ensure bulkheads are deep enough to accommodate double tracking if necessary, and ensure that the electrician has allowed for power if motorised window furnishings are required. Another problem that often crops us until it’s too late is the positioning of air conditioners (sometimes too close to a window to allow for a track) or the position of security detectors. All these potential problems can be easily overcome if dealt with at the planning stage. Many of our clients like to decide on an overall big picture plan for the whole house, then break it down into bite size pieces and tackle one room at a time to fit in with their budget and cash flow. That’s OK too – we will work with you to achieve whatever works for you.

Start with your furniture. What pieces do you want to keep? Base this choice on what you want to keep, not what you think is fashionable at the moment. Obviously the piece has to be the correct dimensions for the room, but the actual look of the piece can be easily changed. Furnishings are recyclable; heirlooms blend. The rigid rules of the past are gone. Have the style you want and put your own individual spin on it.We have listed a few popular modes of decoration below to jump-start those creative juices.

LAVISH. SpringCrest - Decorating windows since 1978

Traditional Traditional decorating no longer adheres to period styles. Traditional style has come to translate pieces from any number of periods and countries. Many young families have created a newer, fresher take on traditional by using lighter colour palettes for walls, and window dressings become tailored curtains, sheers, Roman or roller blinds. The family heirlooms and older furniture marry perfectly with this new updated look – no need to go and buy all new furniture!

Country and Shabby Chic “Country” has evolved into an all-encompassing term of American, English, Shabby Chic and French styles. American country: let the breezes tug at the hems of simple window treatments. Roman shades in natural fabrics like cotton and linen are alluring. From seat cushions to table napkins, you will find simple patterns work best. For instance, look to plaids, checks, and stripes, in hues like sea-blue, lime-green, and butteryellow. Oooh La La - How could French country - also known as French provincial - be anything less than charming? France is renowned for all things romantic including its well-loved 18th-century toile de Jouy (commonly referred to as just “toile”) patterns peppered with endearing images of pastoral life. Today, in a rainbow of colours as well as hip black and white, toile is available as everything from wallpaper to drapery fabrics and accessories. (Toile fabric looks fabulous on an ottoman.) Create a typical French-country window with whimsical fabric patterns and repeat in furnishing details – chairs, ottoman, cushions, throws. Parisian Chic when toned down is often married with the country look to give a soft but elegant look. Think chandeliers, black, white and silver, mirrors – teenage girls love this look in their bedroom! Teamed with sparkly silver or charcoal sheer curtains in front of a blackout curtain (double tracks) creates a sophisticated and fun look. Shabby Chic style is everything vintage, recycled, distressed furniture – team it with curtains in pretty feminine florals and dainty prints, Roman blinds in pastel washed out coloured stripes, floaty sheers in whites and creams. English country style is chintzier – use lots of patterns but in co-ordinated colours. Mix stripes, plaids, florals to bring this look together. Dress the window in a Roman blind, side drapes, tassel tiebacks, pelmet; then add cushions to furniture in same fabric story. The more pattern the better! But the trick is to layer the patterns in co-ordinated colours to avoid a messy look.

Cool, Contemporary, Minimalistic Contemporary decorating style embraces uncluttered, light-filled spaces, open floor plans, minimal furnishings, and slick finishes. Contemporary can be dramatic in a subtle manner; or go for the wow factor in saturated in vibrant colour. Metallic fabrics work well – especially when teamed with glass and acrylic see through furniture. Window treatments are slimmed down and designed to blend rather than contrast with the wall colour. Choices include fabrics that drape well like poly – cotton blends. Ripple fold pleating or reverse pleating works well. No flounces, no frills. In sophisticated bare-bone settings such as these, keep it simple.

Hamptons - Beach house - Coastal Style This classic decorating style never goes out of fashion. If you’re looking for a classic Hamptons beach style feel, start with colour. The idea is to keep things light, breezy and natural. Take your inspiration from nature and dress your interior in sandy creams, driftwood browns and neutrals, all shades of the ocean from aqua to china blue and sunrise inspired splashes of colour. Don’t be afraid to base your scheme on a neutral. Touches of black can bring visual interest and drama. Think natural linens in interesting textures teamed with smart charcoals or navy freshened with crisp white. Light is important in a coastal scheme. The individual requirements of the space and need for light control will dictate your choice of window treatment. Opt for a colour that matches your walls. Choose full height curtains in sheer or fully lined drapes, or roman blinds in stripes or an interesting textured textile. Plantation shutters may be needed in some spaces but beware they can shut out light.

So you roughly know what style/look you want to create, next step is to select what type of window covering you want to achieve both your “look” and what is the most practical solution for your requirements. You may have to be prepared to be flexible here – you may be governed by existing architectural limitations – but we can usually suggest a good compromise that will still deliver you the look you want. We are good at “thinking outside the box” to come up with all sorts of solutions to a decorating dilemma.

Ask yourself these questions: What is the room to be used for? (sleeping, watching TV, office, multi-purpose) If it is a bedroom –

what sort of mood do you want to create...

Romantic Soft & feminine Contemporary Peaceful & Restful

Fun Kids room

Funky teenage bedroom Is block out from sun important in this room Do you need privacy during the daytime in this room but still want light coming in Do you need to cut glare but still be able to see out Is sound proofing important Does it get very hot in this room when sun hits window Does it get very cold in winter How is furniture going to be placed in this room Where will art work & TV screens to be placed on walls Where will air conditioners sit on wall, security sensors If considering motorized curtains/blinds: is there power close to the top of window for the motor Do you have odd shaped windows within the same room Do your windows have an architectural feature that you want to show off, such as an arched window or bay windows To have curtains or blinds? Or a combination of both?

Now to the next step, which is our favourite – colour and fabric selection! The best bit. There are so many gorgeous fabrics and colours available today – just to get your imagination fired up we have listed below a few ideas to get you thinking outside the safe and neutral square….

Monochrome / Neutral Embrace a dark and dramatic colour palette for elegant up-to-the minute interiors Black, white & shades of grey is a sophisticated and striking combination in a room – monochromatic interior trends encourage the creation of fully coordinated décor. Soften the often overpowering effect of black by opting for pattern and texture and use dashes of white to brighten the scheme. A floaty sheer in a dark shade will add softness whilst keeping the décor co-ordinated.

Candy Brights A new take on bright brings happy colours back to decorating and adds a summery feel Look-at-me shades up the feel good factor in your home and promote individuality, especially when displayed in bold colour blocks. Vibrant hues will work together harmoniously if the tones and backdrop are just right. Bright colours on a light back ground look fabulous without appearing too busy, whilst just the outline of a floral in a bright colour on a plain background is very elegant. Primary hues and vivid fuchsias sit well with neutral muted greys. Florals are making a huge comeback, and look particularly fabulous when teamed with stripes and in family and outdoor spaces (we have a great range of weatherproof fabrics).

Metallics It’s time to shine! Go luxe with gold, silver and shimmer The Metallic look is a trend that never dates, with lustrous materials throwing reflective light around and giving deep colour lift. Glimmering metallics create diversity in the decorating palette. Add layers of metallics using soft furnishings, and mix metallic fabrics with plain textures. We have a large range of metallic fabrics, including sheer fabrics that have a metallic thread through them – perfect to complement this look. Metallic leather and vinyls look stunning as a bedhead or ottoman.

Transparent See- through furniture and fabrics promote understated design Think Philippe Starck’s Ghost Chair, glass top tables…. Transparent designs promote light & space. Look for sheer fabrics for an airy, floaty feel to complement acrylic and glass furniture and accessories.

Digital Bring your home into the digital age with graphic prints & eye – popping imagery The digital revolution has found its way into our homes with strong geometric designs and prints. Digital printing onto fabrics has allowed two-dimensional imagery to be transformed into three-dimensional pieces. This trend embraces bold & beautiful decorating.

Nothing beats the luxury and softness that curtains provide. Today we have such a wonderful choice of fabrics available. We see all the new trends, colour palates, textures from both Australia and overseas, we know what fits with the unique coastal “indoor – outdoor” lifestyle of South East Queensland – which is totally different to say the colder climates of Southern Australia.

Points to consider when having curtains Do you want total black out in the room? (It doesn’t matter what colour the fabric is facing into the room – we can make a white curtain total black out with a lining.) The Fabric – do you want a curtain with a separate block out lining, block out coated curtain (when the back of the fabric is coated with a block out layer) and / or Sheers (see through curtains)? The Type of pleating The Type of track/pole/rod

Fabric A Curtain that is “Lined” – has a basic “face” fabric (the fabric that you see facing into the room) The Lining (total block out or part block out) is attached to the head of curtain & sits behind the curtain - window side. Most linings are poly cotton and have a 3 layer coating in order to provide the blackout quality. A lined Curtain is the most traditional way to make a curtain and produces the best result.

Linings are used for the following reasons: They provide structure to the curtains by replicating the pleats in the face fabric. They protect your investment in the face fabric

from perishing in the sun. They provide thermal insulation for the home, keeping heat out in summer and warmth in during winter. Because a lined curtain has 2 layers it provides for better insulation. Unlined or Block out coated curtains, do not have a separate sewn in lining, but rather have the coating applied directly to the face fabric, so there is only one layer of fabric. The advantage of coated fabrics is that the cost of the curtain is reduced as there is no lining and slightly lower labour cost. The down side is that the curtains do not drape as well as a lined curtain and can show needle holes (stitching line) with the light behind it. We are familiar with both types of fabrics and can advise you what works best. We also have some little tricks to provide better results with coated fabrics.

Sheers Sheer curtains are making a huge comeback – forget the Nanna nets and lace curtains of 20 years ago, todays sheers are elegant shimmery fabrics and natural linen look fabrics. We have an amazing range of sheers, from natural earthy tones, to sparkling bling. For a totally new twist put the sheer curtain in front of a toning block out fabric… a look that is not only very stylish but very practical as you can have the back track with the block out curtain pulled back from the window during the day to let the light in, with the sheer curtain across the window creating a soft diffused light that stops glare and provides privacy. Floaty sheers look fabulous and suit all décor styles – they are so elegant in a classical traditional room, but look equally good in a modern industrial or minimalistic setting as they give a softness to an edgy look that can’t be achieved with say a roller blind.

You need to consider carefully what type of pleating to have. It may come down to personal choice – what do you like the look of best? Often the style of the décor can determine the pleating style. A sloped or raked ceiling can determine the pleating style. Some fabrics and patterns (particularly stripes) lend themselves better to one style than another. Double tracks can determine best pleating style for front and rear tracks. Some pleating styles “stack back” more than others – important consideration if you want to get as much curtain off the window as possible.

Ripple or S Fold pleating

is sleek and suits a modern décor – it looks particularly stunning when the track is fixed to the ceiling and extends wall to wall – perfect for large expanses of glass and will visually make a room look bigger if fitted in this way.

Metallic eyelets are usually teamed with a metal rod lending a modern, minimalistic look to your drapes. The window coverage on this type of pleating is minimal, so best not used where light control is important. This treatment works best for dressing a window with “side drapes”, and is especially effective where other fixtures in the room are metallic.

French or Triple Pinch pleats

are groups of triple pleats, spaced evenly along the curtain which creates a formal heading, with the benefit of very neat stacking to the side.

Double pinch pleats Similar to the French style

but with double pleats, this treatment has the benefits of French pleating but creates a style which balances casual with traditional, perfect for any room setting.

This style works well with uneven or wide stripes of different colours as we can usually work the stripe to fall in even patterns. This style is ideal for a formal dining room or can be used for practical reasons where there is not much wall space beside the window.

All about pleating styles 15

Reverse or box pleating This style, also known as

inverted pleating, creates a simple, modern look which also requires less fabric than some other styles. A flat symmetrical pleat which is created by the fabric folding to the back of each side of the pleat. Plain fabrics or those with textured weaves are complemented best by this treatment.

Knife pleating These are sharply pressed slim, closely spaced pleats which are all facing the same way. This is the best way to treat a sloped or raked ceiling that is to have curtains. Knife pleating is also best used on the back track of a double track as the pleat sits flat, and allows the curtain on the front track to move freely.

LAVISH. SpringCrest - Decorating windows since 1978

Choose from many different options – from plain simple tracks to fancy metal poles and custom painted wooden poles. Like pleating styles, the track the curtains hang from often comes down to personal choice – what do you like the look of best? If you are having a pelmet, the track will be hidden so a plain track is the most economical option. Some people like a decorator track to be the hero of the window, with decorative finials. The look of the pole or tracks should be decided in conjunction with the fabric used for the curtain. There is nothing wrong with having different pleating styles and tracks / poles in the same house – just keep it the same in the one room. There are many visual tricks we use to “link” rooms that use different fabrics and tracks / poles throughout the house.

Points to consider with tracks and poles If the track needs to be joined, ensure you select a system that uses good quality glides that will glide smoothly over the joins. The track may need to be joined if very long, or if limited to the size of the elevator in a high rise building….. It is important to get good “fixing” – you don’t want the track falling out of the wall or ceiling from the weight of the curtains! It is critical to use the correct type of screws for timber / plaster / masonry. We only use expert installers who take the extra time to get a perfect installation.

Roller blinds, roman blinds, vertical blinds, panel glides, aluminium venetian blinds, & timber venetian blinds...

Great ideas to consider when using roller blinds Good option for behind a sheer curtain (block out blind). Mount the blind in the window reveal for a neat look that hides the controls.

Roller blinds Roller Blinds or Holland Blinds are available in a great range of stylish fabrics in varying degrees of light control, block out, translucent and screen fabrics. These can be mixed and matched to suit your home decor and control the amount of light you wish to filter. Block out roller blinds can be used effectively to control heat and glare whilst adding a stylish and sleek appearance to your home. Whilst Translucent or Light Filtering Fabrics as the name suggests, these fabrics are used to achieve some degree of light filtration or translucency.

Dual rollers option – one blind is block out, the other screen or translucent Some fabric manufacturers offer roller blind fabrics in same patterns and colours as drapery fabrics – so can marry blinds and curtains in same room for a coordinated look. Fabric covered base bars look good when the fabric used is the same fabric as the curtains in the same room.

Disadvantages of roller blinds

Sun Screen fabric

Be aware when comparing prices! Roller blinds can vary greatly in price so it’s important that you understand why.

Made from Screen fabrics which are created or woven differently than either block out or translucent blinds. They enable you to see through the blind during the day to the view outside, whilst cutting the glare and providing light filtering at the same time.

Strips of light either side if reveal fitted inside window frame. Width restraints – most fabrics are only 3 mts wide. Not good on long skinny windows as the fabric tends to ‘roll off”.

During the daytime you cannot see through them from outside to inside - therefore creating privacy.

Wide blinds need heavy duty 45mm base bar & spring assist – this is more expensive but if not used then the base bar will bow.

Screen fabrics come in a huge range of colours and textures - and can be used very effectively when used in conjunction with a block out blind - creating dual blinds.

Fabric should not be turned on its side in order to make a wide blind as it will “cup”. If you have a wide space to cover then use more than one blind and consider “linking” them.

Advantages of roller blinds

Always specify stainless steel control chain in coastal salt water areas to avoid corrosion Stainless steel is more expensive than other metal chains, and plastic chains break easily.

Economical. Good for wet/damp areas (kitchen, bathroom, laundry as fabric can be wiped down easily) Healthy option for allergy sufferers (asthma) Contemporary streamlined look, minimalist If many blinds in one area then motorisation is a good option as the blinds can opened and closed easily

Many blinds in the one room can be tedious to operate if not motorised. Several blinds at one big window will look messy with all those individual control chains – consider linking blinds together that operate together, or motorise.

Pelmets are an over treatment that can be used very effectively over the top of your curtains as an

alternative to decorative tracks. Pelmets are also fantastic for insulation. They provide a “cap over the top of the curtain or blind that will provide an effective insulation seal preventing heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter.

Fabric accessories and trimmings,

known as passementerie, enhance the overall window treatment and add extra detail to complete a look. In some cases, a trimming provides the opportunity to make a striking contrast with colour or pattern; in others, it may accentuate the flowing lines of drapery or even define its shape. A contrast trimming or banding on the vertical edges and or lower edge of a curtain is a very popular way to add instant interest to the curtain. Plain curtains can be given a graphic edge with banding. Or a fabric covered base bar on a roller blind can tie the roller blind trim into the curtain fabric. Trimming can also be used to adjust the shape and proportion. The position of tiebacks will define the silhouette of curtains and hence affect the amount of light a room receives. Passementerie can make even the simplest window treatment look well considered, lending an accent of colour, or even a touch of humour that lifts the entire effect out of the ordinary. Where window treatments are themselves elaborate, accessories and trimmings are the icing on the cake, serving to heighten the sense of luxury.

Sitting pretty – all about using an upholstered chair to anchor your dÊcor style A statement armchair, chaise, or daybed can set the mood. Often all it takes to pull a room together is one perfect piece, and a chair is ideal for that purpose. There should be a surprise element in every space and having a statement chair is a brilliant, useful and beautiful thing to include in any room. If a room is classic but bordering on safe you can afford to add a little drama with pattern and colour or contrasting accents. A classic Louis chair looks fantastic used this way. Chairs that are going to get high use need to be upholstered in heavy duty fabric. If a chair in a bedroom is more for show than practical use you can afford to indulge in less resilient fabrics such as velvet or other drapery fabrics.

Have you been wondering what to do to give your outdoor area the summer feel it deserves? Weather proof fabrics for bench seating, cushions, curtains, blinds... the possibilities are endless! When selecting outdoor cushion inserts ensure you have specialised outdoor foam that can dry out – it needs to be porous so that water can drain through quickly so that mildew does not grow on the inserts and come through to the fabric.

Can I wash my curtains Polyester curtains and most sheer curtains can be washed. Lined curtains and cotton fabrics should not be washed as the fabric can shrink, and loses its “finish”.

How do I clean curtains We recommend you clean your curtains by using the upholstery tool with your vacuum cleaner. Treat them the same as you would your upholstered furniture – a light vacuum will remove dust.

How do I clean blinds Wipe over with a damp cloth.

How long does it take to make my curtains/blinds If the fabric is in stock, anywhere between one to three weeks, depending on the size of the job. Of course we don’t have to wait until all the curtains are manufactured – we can make and install say the bedroom curtains first, or whatever is your order of preference.

Do you guarantee the workmanship, installation, fabric Yes. All our work and products are backed up with manufacturer’s warranties. We do not warranty misuse of our products.

“At SpringCrest we manufacture & supply bespoke custom made window & soft furnishings, with the majority of our work being repeat or referral from satisfied clients. Our work has the trademark of a personal touch.” The advantage of manufacturing our own products Your order is made in our own manufacturing facility which is on our premises, that means no outsourcing and no home sewers. We use professional equipment and a professional team to complete your order. When your fabric arrives at our premises, the entire meterage is rolled out over a back lit control panel & carefully checked for flaws. As each element is completed, it is inspected and checked for quality control. In the case of curtains we like to “pre hang” them for as long as possible, to train the pleats to sit as they should. We have a dedicated pre hang area for this – clients often like to come & see their curtains at this stage! Your order will then be personally inspected before each job is packed & leaves our premises. When your order is ready for installation, each element is carefully wrapped & packed; curtains are carefully folded & placed in special custom made cloth bags for delivery. Our installers are professionals who install to our high standards & industry guidelines. They are part of the solution and experts at their job Our after sales service is second to none – as with all moving parts, components may need minor adjustments & “tweaking” – we fully back up all our products with guarantees & warranties. This ensures excellent quality control, customer service & the ability to control production time. Now that is what Custom Made Quality is all about! We keep control of the entire manufacturing process, including time frames. From when we get a new order, to after it is installed the sales person “owns the job” & controls the entire process from conception to delivery – it is not hand balled to someone down the line, never to have the original sales person involved again. We do not out source your custom made furnishings to work rooms, interstate or off shore sweat shops, or home sewers. Your custom made furnishings at all times remain under our control, on our clean & secure premises, ensuring they are indeed custom made & exclusive. “ warranty, we have a minimum call out charge which covers the first half hour of labour. Parts are extra and quoted separately.
