Gene Pokor ultimate night of passionate music! We start ny, Tu ba with the dramatic and romantic Polovtsian Dances from Borodin’s Prince Igor, which has inspired countless uses in popular culture—you’ll recognize Stranger in Paradise from the musical Kismet and alluring and exotic melodies you’ve heard in movies, television shows, and even video games. then we turn to the most passionate love story of all time with Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet. We explore the extremes of orchestral instruments with Vaughan Williams’ Tuba Concerto performed by Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s principal tubist Gene Pokorny. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear one of the greatest brass players in the world. And we close with ravel’s Bolero, one of the most fiery, seductive, and ecstatic works in the orchestral repertoire.

Mahler’s First Symphony is an adventure in

extremes. It was originally written for an orchestra of nearly 100 musicians and named after “the Titan,” an epic German novel depicting a passionate youth in his ascension to mature hero. Mahler’s Titan takes music in extreme directions, including a riff on the children’s song “Frere Jacques” that sounds like a funeral dirge and treats the orchestra like a klezmer band in one movement. We also welcome violinist Yevgeny Kutik, praised by the New York times for his “rich, sweet tone,” to perform Bruch’s beautiful and popular First Violin Concerto. THIS CONCERT BROUGHT TO YOU BY

symphonic action goes into top gear in a concert of musical fireworks, savage rhythms, and extreme virtuosity for our soloist and orchestra alike. We open with audience-thriller pianist Alexander tutunov on George Gershwin’s jazzy and explosive Piano Concerto in F. the second half of our concert will feature Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, a ballet featuring primitive rituals celebrating the advent of spring, in which a young girl is chosen as a sacrificial victim and dances herself to death. Rite of Spring was revolutionary for its use of aboriginal and russian folk music in a setting for ballet, and it continues to amaze and astound audiences today with its intense rhythms and haunting, untamed melodies.
