The new year is a time to reflect on the highs and lows of the previous year while focusing on the possibilities of the year ahead. For most of us, spending time with friends and family during the holidays ends the year on a positive note that carries over into the new year. January is one of my favorite months because it is filled with good intentions and positivity. Many of us aim to change our lives for the better in the coming year by making resolutions to help us be healthier, happier, etc. My resolutions for 2019 are to become more organized and spend more time with the important people in my life.

The benefits of hiring an event planner
E
vent planners create, organize and supervise the various elements of hosting an event or party. While those planning to host a party or other event may not immediately think to hire a professional, perhaps they should. Event planners are worth the investment for a variety of reasons. While some hosts may feel event planners are an unnecessary expense, many event planners end up saving hosts substantial amounts of money in the long run. But the potential to save money is not the only reason to hire an event planner for your next corporate event or private party.
Event planners save time.
An event planner will listen to your ideas and goals before working out the details on his or her own. This frees up your time to focus on other aspects of the party, such as arranging lodging for out-of-town guests or
6 Neighborhood Publications
getting a wardrobe together. Experienced event planners also know all the ins and outs of planning an event. Such details can prove difficult and time consuming for inexperienced hosts to figure out.
Get insider deals.
Party planners already have established relationships with vendors. They may be eligible for discounts or perks that someone who walks in off of the street will not be offered. Those savings alone can make hiring a planner well worth it. Your planner also may know which vendors are easiest to work with and which locations offer the best services.
Event planners take the stress out of hosting.
Planning large events can be stressful, particularly if you’re not completely sure where to start. When you hire an event planner,
he or she will take on many of the burdens for you. This enables you to be more focused and have more fun at the event.
Event planners give parties a more professional feel.
Event planners’ designs will go beyond crepe paper and balloons. Planners offer strategies to help you create an impressive-looking event that guests will enjoy and remember for years to come. Plus, planners know the tricks of the trade to keep guests engaged and the party moving along smoothly. Event planners are unsung heroes when it comes to organizing corporate parties or private events. Hiring such professionals affords hosts more free time to enjoy the festivities, and the investment in a good event planner often pays for itself. h

Considerations for outdoor entertaining
O
utdoor parties have a flair all their own. Entertaining outside means being able to enjoy the fresh air, sun and extra space that the great outdoors allows. Entertaining outdoors may include intimate barbecues with friends and weddings with hundreds of guests. While parks, yards, and gardens can make beautiful backdrops for parties, hosts still need to emphasize preparation when throwing an outdoor party.

SELECT AND PREPARE THE SPACE
Many homeowners host parties for friends and family in their backyards. Whereas other spaces, including parks, require the transport of food and other supplies, backyards offer the ultimate in convenience, allowing homeowners to cook foods in their kitchens and then carry items directly to the backyard. Backyards are not always set up or equipped for events, and preparation will be required to turn the yard into a party-worthy area. Plan a day
for cleanup. Remove toys, tools and debris. Be sure the grass is mowed and clippings are removed. Address any tripping hazards and make sure there is an easy path in and out of the party, as well as to the restrooms. Take inventory of tables and seating options and rent or buy extra seating if necessary.
PROVIDE SHADE AND SHELTER
Every party host hopes for good weather when entertaining outside,

but it is best to have a contingency plan in place just in case Mother Nature does not cooperate. Awnings and patio umbrellas can only do so much, and it may be necessary to install pop-up tents or stationary gazebos to protect guests from the elements. Think about renting tents from party supply companies, which usually will erect the tents and take them down after use. Even if the weather will be pleasant, have spots where guests can escape the sun. It can be uncomfortable and dangerous to sit in the sun for long periods of time.
KEEP FOOD TEMPERATURES CONSISTENT
If you plan to offer buffet-style cuisine, arrange for serving dishes that will keep foods hot or cold as needed. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition advises that it is important to keep foods safe when entertaining outside. Cold foods should be kept in coolers or served on beds of ice. Use hot chafing dishes to keep hot foods at a serving temperature at or above 140º F. Refrigerate or refreeze foods within two hours or after one hour if it is above 90º F outside.
PLAN FOR INSECTS
Entertaining outdoors means sharing the space with insects and animals. Ants can be a nuisance, but wasps and bees can be harmful, particularly if a person is allergic. Use repellent candles around the entertaining space to keep bugs away. Make canisters of insect repellent available to guests. Home improvement centers sell bug traps to keep bees and other insects away from foods and people by using sweet lures. Netting on tents or a screened-in area also can keep guests comfortable. Partying outdoors can be convenient and fun. But hosts still must take steps to ensure their guests have a safe and enjoyable time. h

How to throw a theme party and help break the ice Themed parties have a built-in conversation starter: the theme itself. Socializing can increase when other games or themed components are included in the festivities. Here are some ways to make a theme work for you. Introduce the theme with the invitations. Let guests know that there will be a party theme by mentioning it on the invitations. The invitations also may tie into the theme. For example, palm tree invitations can indicate a Hawaiian barbecue. If costumes or specific clothing is suggested, be sure to indicate that on the invitations so guests can plan accordingly and decide whether or not to participate.
M
any people do not need a reason to throw a party. Although they’re commonly held to mark momentous events, like birthdays, parties can be entertaining ways to get a group of people together just for the sake of being social.
Entertaining a diverse groups of friends or even family members may challenge party hosts to find methods that encourage their guests to mingle. One of the most effective ways to break the ice is to give a party its very own theme.
Coordinate the music. Guests will feel more comfortable if you have a steady amount of music playing in the background. Find music that fits with your theme, such as music from the 1970s for a disco party. Keep the volume moderate while guests are arriving and getting to know one another. Later on the volume can be turned up for dancing.

a few chairs around a snack table facing one another so that guests are encouraged to chat instead of spending the night as wallflowers. Lead by example. If you want others to get involved and have fun with the party theme, you should lead the way. Be sure you are dressed for the occasion and participate in any games or activities that you have planned. If you want guests to get up for a round of karaoke, be the first person to belt out a tune. Decorate the home or venue. Ensure guests know there is a specific theme by decking out the party space with the right accessories. The decor can add to the fun factor and give guests even more opportunities to converse over clever knickknacks, signs or elaborate backdrops. Don’t forget the food. Tie your food choices into the party theme, offering foods that are theme-specific or renaming foods so they coordinate with the theme. Cheese-and-crackers
Costume parties are not just for Halloween. Dressing up can be part of a themed party that entertains guests and encourages them to mingle.
platters can get fun makeovers if you use cookie cutters to cut the cheese into shapes. Plan cuisine that fits with the theme, such as pretzels and beer for an Oktoberfest party or milkshakes and French fries for a 50’s Drive-In party. By thinking creatively, you can find even more
clever ways to keep guests smiling and satiated. Theme parties make it easy to tie various elements together and break the ice when guests are invited to mingle. h
How to set the table for casual & formal gatherings
A proper table setting can establish the tone for your dinner or special event.
H
osts have a lot on their plates when planning dinner parties. Choosing the menu is a big responsibility, as is taking steps to ensure guests feel welcome. One area novice hosts may overlook is how to set a proper table. Eating on the go or quickly between commitments means individuals often grab meals wherever they can, and that rarely leads them to the dining room table. But a properly set table can impress guests and improve the ambiance at a dinner party. Begin by choosing a matching set of dinnerware. You will need to invest in extra dinnerware if you do not have enough items to accommodate all your guests. If dishes and utensils have seen better days, you may want to upgrade to a new set. Wash any plates and glasses that have not been used in a while before setting the table. A quick
12 Neighborhood Publications
rinse through the dishwasher can freshen them up and remove any accumulated dust. Select a table linen that fits with your decor or theme. It will be the base for your table setting. The dinner plate should be front and center for each guest. Place a napkin directly on the center of the dinner plate or off to the left side. Utensils will flank the plate in order of use. The experts at Emily Post Etiquette suggest using the word “FORKS” to remind yourself which order to place the utensils. Begin on the left side of the plate. “F” is for forks, “O” represents the plate itself, “K” is for knives, and “S” is for spoons. The “R” is not used, but the word serves as a pneumonic device nonetheless. In a basic table setting, there may only be one fork, knife and spoon. In more formal settings, additional utensils are provided for multiple
courses. The additional utensils are placed in order of use. Therefore, a salad fork would be on the end and the dinner fork closer to the plate. All knives should be facing in toward the dinner plate. Beverage glasses are placed above the dish and utensils to the right side of it. Bread-and-butter dishes and/or small salad plates appear to the left. Many hosts do present dessert well after the main course, so you will not need to have a dessert plate, beverage cup and saucer or dessert utensils on the table initially. They can be brought in later on. Buy a centerpiece to complete the table. Keep in mind the height and size of the arrangement so that it does not impede guests’ views or take up so much space that diners feel cramped. Proper table setting can make any meal feel more special. h

Gifts for the host and guests make parties special
to make the gift even more special is to take note of the types of vintages hosts tend to enjoy. Another courtesy is to inquire about which foods will be served at the party and then find a wine that will pair perfectly with the menu. If your knowledge does not extend to wine, consult with a an employee at your local liquor store or ask a restaurant sommelier.
I
t is customary for guests to express their gratitude to a host or hostess opening his or her home to them by giving a gift. But in many instances, party hosts also share gifts with their guests. Housewares and food and beverages are popular gifts to give hosts. Those looking for inspiration for host and guest gifts can consider these ideas.
FOODS An easy way to show a party host appreciation for the invite is to bring something that can be served at the event. A gift basket of assorted

If your host is fond of a certain type of spirit, such as brandy or whiskey, you can bring that as a gift as well. treats can be shared or saved for later on. Dessert is a popular food gift as well. Guests know how much work goes into planning a party menu, and sometimes it can be nice to provide dessert and give hosts a break. Cakes and other confections can be welcome offerings. Guests who want hosts to enjoy some rest and relaxation after a party or large event may bring a gift certificate for a special restaurant. This way the hosts can indulge in a meal out at their leisure.
BEVERAGES Wine is another popular gift to share with party hosts. One way
SERVINGWARE Individuals who host several parties per year may appreciate some new pieces to add to their serving collections. Look for items such as decorative bowls or ornate cake serving stands that hosts can be proud to display at future functions. A new cooler or engraved beverage tub is one idea for party hosts who often host outdoor barbecues. Think about hosts’ interests and the types of foods they typically serve, and you likely can find a gift that will suit their needs. continued

PARTY FAVORS Party hosts are not the only ones to enjoy gifts when special events are held. Very often those who throw the parties plan favors for the guests, and everyone gets to leave with smiles on their faces and a memento to boot. Keep favors simple so they do not add a lot of extra work to party planning. Candles, candy, cookies, or small trinkets that match the theme of the party are relatively easy finds. Wrap favors intricately and make them part of the party decorations.
Don’t forget food allergies
when hosting your next party
Instead of serving them on the same platter as all foods, keep foods that are known to trigger food allergies separate so guests can rest easier.
future parties. Prepare food safely. When preparing meals, take steps to avoid crosscontamination of allergy-inducing foods. Use different dishes, spoons and utensils when preparing meals. In addition, prior to preparing food, thoroughly clean all dishes you plan to use in an effort to remove any traces of allergens from past meals.
Enhance the enjoyment factor of special occasions with gifts for the party host and favors for the guests.h
Did You Know? An outdoor movie night can be a fun way to get friends together. Such parties produce minimal mess because the festivities take place outdoors. Projectors, many of which can now hook up to mobile phones capable of streaming movies, and a “screen” are all hosts need to host a fun outdoor movie night. Large, white sheets or the side of a home can work as a screen. But homeowners can purchase screens from electronics retailers as well. Arrange picnic blankets and lawn chairs throughout the yard so guests have somewhere to sit and enjoy the show.
H
olidays, birthdays and the opportunity to unwind with good friends and some conversation are just a few of the reasons to host parties at home. Hosts and hostesses have several things to consider before hosting such get-togethers, including any food allergies their guests may have. Entertaining guests who have food allergies makes menu decisions more difficult. According to estimates from the nonprofit organization Food Allergy Research & Education, 15 million American adults have food allergies. In addition, a 2013 study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that food allergies among children increased approximately 50 percent between 1997 and 2011. Because food allergies are so prevalent, it’s important that party hosts take steps to keep their guests happy and healthy. Ask guests if they have food allergies. Encourage guests to discuss their food concerns with you before you plan the menu. While some guests may be hesitant to share such information, assure them that their comfort is your biggest priority. Keep a log of guests’ food allergies that you can refer to when planning the menu, and use this log when planning

Read all labels. Just because a food seems safe doesn’t mean that it is. Read packaging and labels carefully to determine if the product contains any allergens or if it was produced in factories where it might have been subjected to cross-contamination. Keep allergy-safe foods separate. Allow guests with food allergies to dig in prior to others so that serving utensils do not transfer allergens to other serving dishes. Place safe foods away from those that may trigger allergic reactions and label items carefully if you are serving buffet style meals. Research allergy-free recipes. Look for recipes that do not include many of the most common allergens, such as nuts, soy, dairy, and eggs. Express your concerns. If you are worried that you may inadvertently introduce an allergen into the foods you plan to serve, speak to your guests in advance of the party. Guests will likely be willing to bring dishes they prepare themselves to calm your nerves and ensure they don’t suffer an allergic reaction. Food allergies can be challenging waters to navigate. But maintaining an open dialogue with your guests about food allergies can ensure your next dinner party is a success.h

hat comes to mind when you think of a “Roofer?” Unprofessional, untrustworthy, improperly insured, lack of education in their industry, overcharge for work, charge for unnecessary work, shyster? Well, if these are your thoughts you, unfortunately, may be correct. In some instances, the roofing industry can be compared to the “Wild, Wild West” in Texas. It takes a special company to be truly successful in the roofing industry. “We can’t get enough continuing education. My team and I work diligently and nonstop at upgrading our expertise. Our integrity is everything to us. We owe this to the general public, and to our brand. This reflects on our reputation, our families and all the wonderful people and customers that support Eldridge Roofing & Restoration, Inc.” states Mikee Eldridge CEO of Eldridge. Founded in 1998, Eldridge Roofing & Restoration, is a true family owned and operated company local to Houston, based out of Spring, Texas and best described as unique – truly a “General Contractor at its Finest,” which begins and ends its day with the company motto “People Before Profit” TM. The entire team stands behind this motto with passion, and applies it in all dealings with customers – another of many reasons for the success of the company. Eldridge customers are treated fairly and with respect. They will provide the utmost quality work to your home, property or business, and when completed, they want to know that they have developed a relation-
ship, and that you (the customer) feels that you have a friend in the business. That helps to explain why Eldridge is a BBB A+ Gold Star Company, and a Super Services Award winner with Angie’s List! Mikee Eldridge wraps this up in his own words, “I fell in love with roofing. I fell in love with the industry. My Dad, Mike Sr., was a general contractor. At an early age he ‘threw me to the wolves’ on a distressed rental property he owned for years and said, “Get it done. Get it restored from roof to slab . . . you’re on your own.” Going on 21 years later in general contracting, roofing has always been Mikee’s first love. “Unfortunately, the roofing industry lacks education,

Focus Is Clarity Tips from Master Josh Arcemont Out of all the Life Skills we teach at HERO, Focus is arguably the most important one. Focus is about becoming crystal clear about where you are in your life and where you want to go. When a camera is out of focus, the images are fuzzy and not clearly defined. When that same camera lens is focused, the images become crystal clear and every detail can be seen in HD quality. Focus is clarity. Think of your favorite baseball pitcher, or your favorite basketball player, or your favorite football quarterback. None of them would be any good without the ability to see. Imagine if the pitcher couldn’t see the catcher, or the basketball player couldn’t see the goal or the quarterback couldn’t see the players on the field. It would be impossible to succeed without vision. Focus helps you to hit the bullseye. You can’t hit the target you can’t see. Unhappy, unsuccessful men and women tend to be fuzzy or unclear about their ideas, whereas happy, successful men and women tend to be very clear about their ideas, dreams and goals. This is a great time of year to sit down and re-focus on your goals. Writing them will help provide that clarity.

Tips for entertaining at home A casual party with friends may require less planning and preparation around the house than a larger, more formal affair.
E
ntertaining at home is a fun and convenient way to get together with friends and family. Entertaining at home is less expensive than renting out a venue or hitting the town and party hosts know the amenities they have available to them. Although convenient, home entertaining also requires more work on the part of the event host, including readying the house for company. But with some creative thinking and a
20 Neighborhood Publications
little sweat equity, hosts can throw an enjoyable and memorable get-together from the comforts of their own homes. Begin by going room-by-room and making note of what will need to be done. If you’ve entertained at home before, you may have a mental inventory of what worked and what didn’t, so make changes accordingly this time around. Focus only on the spaces where guests will congregate, such as the living room, den, kitchen,
and dining area. Develop a decluttering plan to remove items from entertaining spaces and store them safely away. A little bit of clutter can make a space seem unruly and unclean. Move delicate items, such as collectibles, to a storage location, returning them to their original spaces after the party has ended. If necessary, move some furniture or take away a piece or two to free up more space. Folding chairs may be more practical than a large sofa. Expend the bulk of your cleaning efforts on the entryway, bathrooms and living areas of the home, as guests will spend a lot of their time in these areas. Enlist the help of the household to tidy the house and then tackle deep cleaning room by room. Remove anything you do not want your guests to see. One or two inquisitive guests may check behind the shower curtain or even open up the medicine cabinet, so remove personal or potentially sensitive items. Recruit help to ready your home or even assist you on the day of the party. A cleaning service can make fast work of scouring the house, while a waitstaff can help serve food and keep drinks refilled, enabling you to mingle with guests. If the idea of cooking for all of your guests is overwhelming, hire a caterer to provide the food. Stock up on stain removal products to tackle the inevitable spills. While you no doubt hope to keep your house as clean as possible, expect some dropped food or spilled drinks. Keep a cleaner at the ready so you can quickly combat stains and guests can continue having a good time. The more complicated the party is, the more time you will need to prepare your home. Afford yourself ample time to prepare so you are not feeling rushed come the day of the party. h

Trends you may see when dining out Healthier kids’ choices: For years, the standard fare for kids has been burgers, fries and various recipes for macand-cheese. But a survey of professional chefs sponsored by the National Restaurant Association revealed that many restaurants are now offering a greater variety of foods on kids’ menus. Soups, salads, leaner meats, and more vegetables are some of the items kids can choose from. Increase in craft foods: Greater emphasis is being placed on creating meals that look and taste good and are produced in eco- and community-friendly ways. Craft foods are made in small batches from locally sourced ingredients, helping to create a symbiotic relationship between eateries, farmers, food manufacturers, and diners.
When dining out, expect to find more attractive plates, as restaurateurs understand diners like to photograph and share their meals through social media.
Community tables: Make new friends while dining out by getting seated at community tables, which are no longer restricted to Japanese hibachi restaurants. These larger tables pair different diners together.

estaurants are thriving once again. Since 2014, restaurant-goers have renewed interest in socializing away from home and more money to spend, a stark turnaround from preceding years when diners were living on tighter budgets thanks to a recession that began in 2008. As crowds waiting in line for their favorite eateries begin to grow anew, restaurants have begun to implement new menus and dining styles in an attempt to attract a broader clientele. Many trends are catering to the younger, technology-driven customer. Photo-ready foods: Diners are utilizing social media to share their menu choices with people all around the world. Scroll through anyone’s news feed and you’re likely to find photo graph’s of last night’s entrée or an impressive dessert enjoyed during a night out with friends. Many restaurateurs understand that their latest culinary creation is likely to find its way onto social media, so a greater emphasis is being placed on plating — or making foods look better when first presented to diners. Digital kiosks: Desire an appetizer or want to reorder another beverage? You may not have to flag down your server to do so. Several restaurants have implemented tablet-based service at their tables. In addition to playing games or getting apprised on the latest specials, guests can order some menu items through table-mounted tablets. And if you’re in a rush for the check, swipe your credit card and pay the bill without waiting for your waiter to bring it over.
Neurogastronomy: Many restaurants are employing neurogastronomy, or the science of manipulating perception of how foods taste by external factors. Everything from the colors of dishes to the sounds of music being piped in can affect your perception of taste. Prepaid reservations: Today you can purchase just about anything in advance, from movie tickets to vacations. Soon you may be able to prepay for restaurant meals as well. Arrive at your reserved time and enjoy your meal. This trend is beneficial to restaurants because they are guaranteed revenue even if patrons do not show up. Trends in dining out can make meal experiences more unique. Expect some new changes at your favorite restaurants.h

Make better choices when dining out Engage in conversation. Bring someone with you to the restaurant so you can share some lively conversation. The more time you spend talking, the longer it will take to eat, giving your body time to digest and prevent overeating. Choose the right foods. When perusing the menu, look for foods cooked a certain way. Broiled and grilled meats are healthier than fried foods, and steamed vegetables contain plenty of vitamins and minerals your body needs to stay healthy. Avoid heavy cream sauces, lots of cheese and fatty meats. Ask if you can substitute fresh vegetables or brown rice for unhealthy sides or white rice.
D
ining out can make for an enjoyable evening or afternoon. Many people enjoy sampling different cuisines, and eating out removes the pressure and the work required when preparing meals at home. A 2013 poll from Rasmussen Reports found 58 percent of American adults say they dine out at least once a week, while 14 percent go out two or three times per week and 4 percent eat out more than three times per week. Dining out is also popular in Canada, where, according to Statistics Canada, restaurant sales per capita have increased steadily during the last 15 years. Across Canada, restaurants took in nearly $650 per person in 2012. As the number of people dining out continues to increase, many people find themselves looking for ways to stay focused on healthy eating when they are not the ones preparing their meals. The following are a handful of ways diners can stay healthy without giving up their love of dining out.

Don’t arrive at the restaurant too hungry. Eat a small and filling snack before going to a restaurant. Eating a snack ahead of time will prevent you from overeating once your food arrives. An apple, protein bar or some crackers and cheese can take the edge off hunger and reduce the likelihood that you will overeat at the restaurant. Fill up on water. When the server comes to take your drink order, ask for some water if it’s not already on the table. The symptoms of dehydration mimic those of hunger. Also, drinking water before and during your meal will help you to feel full and decrease the likelihood that you will overeat.
Eat more seafood. Seafood is not only f lavorful, but healthy as well. Eating certain fish gives your body the right types of fats to help the neurological system function properly and fuel your brain. Avoid dining out as a reaction to stress. Don’t go out to a restaurant if you are feeling stressed or rushed, especially if you use food as a coping mechanism. You may end up rushing through your meal and eating more than you intended. Divide your meal. Share a plate with others or ask for a to-go container when your course is served. This allows you to set aside some leftovers before you start to eat, reducing the likelihood that you will overeat. Dining out is a favorite activity for many people, and diners can take several steps to make their dining experiences healthier. h

Did You Know? Dining outdoors when the weather is warm can make for a pleasant change of pace. While certain aspects of eating outside can be enticing, Mother Nature can sometimes complicate the experience. Wind is one challenge to dining outside, as diners may find themselves chasing paper napkins or airborne plastic cups on windy afternoons or evenings. To safeguard against the wind, rely on reusable, heavy plastic items that are less likely to blow away in the wind. Also, keep tablecloths in place with a few supplies. Use a grommet-making tool to punch holes into the tablecloth and attach plastic or metal grommets. Place the tablecloth on the table and slip a thin bungee cord fastener to a grommet on the underside of the table. Stretch the cord across to a grommet on the other side of the tablecloth and secure. Two or three sets of grommets and bungee cords may be all you need to keep the tablecloth in place and enjoy an interruption-free meal outside.

Plan the perfect “dinner and a movie” night
T
he “perfect date night” differs depending on the couple. Some couples might prefer a night on the town during which they get dolled up and visit a five-star restaurant, while others might find a laid back night at home makes for the ideal night for two. Dinner and a movie has long been a go-to for couples who prefer something short of a fancy night out but more extravagant than a relaxing night at home. While making plans to dine out and catch a movie is not complicated, there are some things couples can do to make sure such nights go off without a hitch. Make a dinner reservation. If you’re going out on a Friday or Saturday night, be sure to make a dinner reservation in advance. Chances are strong other couples have similar plans, and you don’t want to miss the movie because you were stuck waiting for a table at the restaurant. Dinner and a movie nights tend to be impromptu, but make a reservation a few nights in

advance if you’re planning on going out on a popular date night. Leave ample time between dinner and the start of the movie. No one wants to rush through a meal, especially couples who may not get too many chances to dine out and enjoy each other’s conversation. If your movie begins at 9:00 p.m., make a dinner reservation for 6:00 or 6:30 p.m. so you have ample time to eat, enjoy each other’s company and make it to the theater on time. If you’re planning on seeing a highly anticipated movie on its opening weekend, be sure to leave enough time between dinner and the start time of the movie so you can get to the theater early enough to get good seats. Buy your movie tickets in advance. Much like you want to make a dinner reservation so you can get a table, you also want to buy your tickets in advance so you aren’t shut out if the theater sells out. If you’re worried about committing to the movie too far in advance and want to wait to
buy tickets, choose a fallback movie to see just in case the film you were hoping to see sells out before you can buy tickets. Know the addresses of nearby theaters and show times. Many a couple has arrived at a movie theater only to find the movie they planned to see is sold out. Oftentimes, such letdowns can be remedied by driving to another theater nearby that is showing the movie at a slightly later time than the initial theater the couple visited. Know your movie schedules and theater addresses so you have options should your movie be sold out. Download an app like Fandango on your phone so you don’t waste precious time trying to find show times and addresses on the Internet. Dinner and a movie is a staple for couples’ date nights, and there are some tricks of the trade couples can employ to ensure their next date night is memorable for all the right reasons.h

Arrange safe transportation for safe entertaining Party hosts who plan to serve alcohol should arrange for transportation to ensure their guests arrive home safely.
P
arty hosts are tasked with a number of responsibilities as they try to coordinate successful events. Although planning menus and entertainment might be a host’s top priority, consideration also should be given to keeping guests comfortable and safe, particularly at parties where alcohol will be served. Protecting guests begins with being a responsible party host. It is hosts’ duty to monitor their guests’ alcohol consumption and to recognize when guests have had enough. Having a designated bartender at the event can help limit how much people are being served. Hosts also may want to have several transportation options at the ready to take party participants home after the festivities. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 30 people in the United States die every day in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. home can reduce the number of injuries and deaths on the road. Explore the options for safe party travel and have a contingency plan in place if one of these options falls through. DESIGNATED DRIVER: Hosts can choose to remain sober at their parties and shuttle guests home if need be. Otherwise, ask someone else to abstain from alcohol and drive others home at the end of the night. TAXI SERVICE: Hosts can make arrangements with nearby taxi companies or car services to arrive outside their homes at the end of the party. If the party is being held somewhere other than your home, carry taxi business cards with you to arrange for pickup at the venue. VAN OR BUS RENTAL: Party buses can be a safe and fun way to transport guests around. This can be the
ideal option when bringing a large group of people to the same venue or on a long-distance trip. Some party buses provide on-board entertainment, such as televisions or gaming options. Hosts also can rent extended vans from car rental companies or consult with a limousine service. PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: Public transportation is a safe and affordable way to get guests home safely. Buses and trains can be inexpensive choices and safe methods for getting people home. Have bus or train fare available in the event guests do not have any cash on them. Keeping guests safe is a priority for party hosts. Arrange for transportation if alcohol is being served so partygoers can get home safely. h
