This course further develops reading, writing and speaking skills as stated in the Minnesota State Standards. Reading skills include: topic, main idea, supporting details, fact and opinion, theme, inferences and drawing conclusions, author’s purpose, point of view and vocabulary. Students in 8th grade Language Arts will work to develop higherlevel thinking skills. Students are required to read independently on a daily basis. In addition to reading, students will enhance their writing skills through essays. The writing curriculum requires students to complete a research persuasive essay, character description, compare-contrast essay and a short story. Speaking components include large and small group discussions as well as, formal and informal presentations. Student development is assessed through a variety of projects, essays, tests and Socratic seminars.
