LOCAL PARKS AND REC WILDEST ART SHOW THIS SIDE OF THE LEADER WITH HEART CINDY KEATING FRONT RANGE
MEADOW WOOD SPORTS COMPLEX 2000 Evergreen Heights Dr., Woodland Park, 687-5225, city-woodlandpark.org home/parks-and-recreation The City above the Clouds got it right when it built this park with community in mind. When I arrived in Woodland Park in the late summer of 2001, the sprawling wooded acres had baseball and soccer fields and not much else. Today, Meadow Wood Sports Complex has a sparkling, all-weather turf baseball field, all-weather turf soccer fields, three lighted natural turf fields, ice/inline outdoor hockey arena, four tennis courts that rival any in southern Colorado, and a fitness trail. The city’s high school and middle school cross country teams train at Meadow Wood in what is arguably the most scenic venue of its kind in the state. There is plenty of parking. You can even take your dog for a walk in the park, but make sure you have Fido on a leash and be sure to clean up after your furry friend.

THE COLORADO WOLF AND WILDLIFE CENTER, COURTESY PHOTO
The City of Woodland Park looked a lot different when Cindy Keating took over as the city’s parks and recreation director in February 1994. Under her leadership, Meadow Wood Sports Complex and other city-run athletic venues in the area have thrived. The Woodland Park Parks and Recreation Department provides quality recreational programs for youths and adults, serving more than 4,000 participants per year. Many of the programs could not be offered without the assistance of volunteers. Cindy allowed me to coach youth baseball, soccer and basketball when my son participated in sports many years ago. Cindy is usually available to meet with you if you drop by her office to just say hi or if you have a question or suggestion about all things parks and rec related. “Cindy has a high level of professionalism and is a great asset to the community,” said Deb Maresca, founder and event director of Mountain Top Cycling Club.
The Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center in Divide is truly a gem. I first visited this sanctuary more than a decade ago and was blown away. Its mission is to educate the public through tours and programs about the importance of wolves, coyotes and foxes to our ecosystem, which includes the importance of preservation and conservation of the forests, land and water that supports wildlife, flora and fauna for future generations to enjoy. The center provides natural habitats and exceptional lives for the animals entrusted to its care since they cannot for a variety of reasons.

THE CRIPPLE CREEK HERITAGE CENTER IS HOME TO THE ANNUAL “ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST” ART SHOW, COURTESY PHOTO
Sponsored by the City of Cripple Creek, this show features Western art, including Native American, cowboy and wildlife pieces. The “Once Upon a Time in the West” art show is going on its ninth year at the heritage center. The show donates 10 percent of all sales to art education purposes benefiting high school art departments. While you’re at the show, check out all the other cool stuff in the heritage center. This 11,600-square-foot visitors center is designed in a style reminiscent of the town’s hey-day — 1890s to early 1900s — but, the technology is all 21st Century. There are multiple handson exhibits that combine interactive technology with tactile, audio and video techniques, for an opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the glory days of the World’s Greatest Gold Camp. Service animals are welcome inside the heritage center.

Don’t let anyone tell you that Colorado can’t produce a high quality wine. Remind them of the bourgeoning wine scene in 1960s California and then direct them to this riverside restaurant/ wine tasting room. At The Wines of Colorado you will experience a trifecta of good food, outdoor ambiance and an impressively stocked wine shop — with complimentary tastings. I find nothing more Colorado-esque than a well crafted bison burger enjoyed on a rambling deck overlooking Fountain Creek while quaffing a cab-franc from the Western Slope’s Grand Valley. Taste a handful of pours, choose a favorite and order a glass to accompany dinner. Then be sure to take a couple bottles home for tomorrow evening’s dinner party.

SO MUCH MORE THAN A DELI GOLD CAMP BAKERY 4729 Twin Rocks Road, Divide 112 S. Third St., Victor, 689-9300 facebook.com/goldcampbakery
This brewery says that passion plus palate plus patience equals Paradox. That might not be the formal definition of the term, but it does shed light on this top brewer’s methodological ethos, whose every creation is barrel aged and bottle conditioned. This ain’t just beer; it’s beer produced using ancient fermentation principles, much like that used in traditional wine making. Translation: this beer will knock your socks off. For wicked hot summer days I like to grab the tart farmhouse ale named Future Knowledge. This unfiltered brew is all citrus and floral on the nose, then opens to a bright and lively palate with medium body and a refreshing acidity. Such a boisterous beer, with a mere 6.6 percent ABV, makes for a brilliant summer beverage.

Experience an authentic take on a German deli/bakery by discovering this tucked-away gem just off Victor Avenue. This humble looking deli will surprise you with fare worth boasting of. I like to start with one of their deli sandwiches (they are loaded with layers of premium meats and cheeses), and then, even though I’m then stuffed to the rafters, finish with one of their pastries or baked goods. Try the “Bee Sting” (Bienenstich) a sweet yeast dough with a baked-on topping of caramelized almonds and filled with a vanilla pastry cream.

This longstanding favorite is practically world-famous; and they don’t stop short of advertising as such. Standing front and center in Woodland Park for three-and-a-half decades, who hasn’t been here? And sure, we all love the biscuits and gravy, but I’m hooked on the “drive-by” visit where I’ll drop in for a size-of-my-head bear claw for a mere $2.40. Sugar-fix achieved, it’s the perfect launch pad into a day playing in the mountains. Just make sure you have coffee on hand.

Enjoy authentic Mexican burritos, carne asada, chicken dishes, Mexican-style salads and more at Fiesta Mexicana. Owners Martin and Patricia Rangel moved to the U.S. from Jalisco, Mexico, in the early 1980s. After working several years and then owning a car body shop, working part time in a restaurant and running a Latin market, the Rangels decided to bring their family recipes to the table and open their own Mexican restaurant, sharing the authentic flavors and traditions from their country with residents of Teller County and beyond.
Open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Joanie’s is “great for breakfast and lunch in Woodland Park,” its website states. This family-friendly restaurant offers hand-crafted sandwiches, homemade soups, homemade quiches and fresh-baked goods. Love and care goes into each item, so customers can go home feeling full and content. Now under the new ownership of John Edmundson since February 2016, the deli serves premium Boar’s Head meets and cheese on all sandwiches, making each one a healthy and delicious choice. I already know Woodland Park is scenic and vibrant. I also know that a small group of people led by Darlene Jensen are working to preserve the town’s history while enhancing its downtown through the nonprofit Woodland Park Main Street. In Colorado, the Department of Local Affairs sponsors the program — there are 2,000 designated Main Streets around the nation and 20 in the state. But the people here are so impressive they ranked No. 1 last year in volunteer hours. Their energy is inspiring. If you’ve seen murals that present great photo opportunities, they’re a Main Street project. I had my photo taken with one and sent it to my grandsons — they got a huge kick out of it. Jensen is the group’s fearless leader, entirely devoted to collaborating with other organizations like the Downtown Development Authority. Next up for the organization is the Old Fashioned 4th of July celebration in Memorial Park, the jewel of the city.

SPOT TO SOAK UP THE COUNTY’S RICH HISTORY FLORISSANT FOSSIL BEDS NATIONAL MONUMENT 15807 County Road 1, Florissant, 748-3253, nps.gov/flfo
Sure, Divide is a small place. But like many small businesses in the unincorporated parts of Teller County, the main attraction is the customer service, which is part of the charm. At least that’s how it is at Shipping Plus on CR 5 in Divide. Lisa Lee opened the business 16 years ago, one of few commercial establishments in the unincorported area. Since then, she has mailed out 80,000 packages — including mine. I don’t even have to remember my kids’ addresses because she has them all down in the computer. Relief! I’m stressed in December, OK? I’m calmer when birthdays roll around. Granted, mailing packages can be expensive, but Lee takes away the brunt of the financial pain with her self-assurance — like those non-dimensional packages that are a breeze to wrap. Lee says the best part of the job is the people who mosey in all day long. “It’s a non-alcoholic bar here,” she said. “People tell me their stories.”
FLORISSANT FOSSIL BEDS NATIONAL MONUMENT, PHOTO COURTESY OF JEFF WOLIN
The best people work at the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument! In a small county such as Teller, we kind of view the national park as our special place. Of course, we want to share the 34 million-year old insect and plant fossils. As a reporter, I love going out to the monument and collecting stories from sources like Ranger Jeff Wolin. Before I get in my car, I hike the 1-mile Petrified Forest Loop. It’s a glorious hike that gives me goosebumps. Recently, the monument was one of six recipients of the Outstanding Volunteer Service Awards.

PLACE TO MEET TELLER COUNTY’S ANGELS ASPEN MINE CENTER 166 E. Bennett Ave., Cripple Creek, 689-3584, aspenminecenter.org
ASPEN MINE CENTER, COURTESY PHOTO
Some people don’t know that angels exist in Cripple Creek. They’re kind of hidden away at the Aspen Mine Center across from the fire station. But people who need help — whether in the form of food, money to ease a temporary situation, the chance for a job, counseling, advice about Medicaid or a social occasion at the community lunch — the center provides all those things and more. It’s a retreat for local seniors, a place for them to gather and tell their stories. And for the area’s veterans, the center is a refuge as Mike Bartol works his weekly magic helping Teller County’s military. But it’s the people who make the center a special place. For me, as a reporter, the center has given me a treasury of stories about folks in the community, especially the ones who find the courage to move forward despite road blocks and emotional stopgaps. There are so many angels, among them: Mary, Ted, Cope, Hank, Rebecca, Brent, Gail, Angie, Veldean and Erin.
