Teller County Guide an introduction With its ubiquitous mountain vistas and diverse attractions, Teller County has much to offer. In this annual magazine, we take a look at a perfect day’s itinerary in five of the county’s population centers: Cripple Creek /Victor, Divide, Florissant, Green Mountain Falls and Woodland Park. We have suggestions that will delight one-time visitors as well as the longtime residents. A visit to Divide, the site of the first permanent settlement in Teller County in the early 1870s, isn’t complete without a tour of the Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center. Visitors can see a variety of wolves, foxes, and even New Guinea Singing Dogs and coyotes. Grab a great burger at Russ’ Place afterward and
a crowler at Paradox Beer Company and your day is complete. See story beginning on Page 7. Start your visit to Woodland Park, Teller County’s most populous city with more than 7,500 residents, at the Visitor Center. There you’ll get the goods on the area attractions. The kids will love learning some “pre”history at the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center and traveling down the lazy river at the Woodland Aquatic Center. Adults might choose to play 18 holes at Shining Mountain Golf Course or take a stroll through the Woodland Park Farmers Market, in the warmer months. See story beginning on Page 14. counties. Home to the annual Green Box Arts festival, which brings in famous artists and national dance troupes, the town is also known for its signature lake, plentiful hiking trails and charming eateries including The Blue Moose Tavern, The Pantry and The Mucky Duck. See story beginning on Page 25. The mining districts of Cripple Creek and Victor are rich in history and beauty. “This area offers breathtaking mountain vistas and scenery, historic hiking trails, antique shopping, historical museums, a glimpse into old and new mining activity and casinos — and you may even cross paths with wildlife,” says writer Marianne Mogon. See story beginning on Page 37.
A stop in Florissant, a small town on the western edge of the county, home to Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, could fill a full day. But first, coffee at Costello Coffee House, lunch at Iron Tree Restaurant & Funky Town Brewery, supply-gathering atthe “Merc” Mercantile. There are shopping and pampering options, too. See story beginning on Page 44. These stories showcase just some of the sights to see and things to do in these Teller County communities. Take it all in in this, our annual supplement to the Pikes Peak Courier. Then hit the road and explore. — Michelle Karas, Editor

On a recent Sunday, the burger special at Russ’ Place in Divide was The Bottle Cap, a cheeseburger topped with fried jalapeño and banana peppers, smoked Boar’s Head center cut bacon, and drizzled with barbecue sauce, with a choice of sides (sweet potato fries recommended!) — for $14.99.
want to meet a wolf or two up close, there are VIP Wolf Interactions, where up to five people are escorted inside a wolf enclosure by guides and can pet the wolves or even give a belly rub. “It’s really quite a treat to look in their eyes and run your fingers through their fur,” Kobobel said. The center is currently home to a pair of Mexican Gray Wolves, of which there are only 160 remaining in the wild today. And, later this year, the center will become home to a pair of Americ Red wolves. A critically endangered species, there are just nine of these wolves left in the wild, and just over 200 are held in captivity at zoos and wildlife centers in the U.S., she said. “We’ll be the only place in Colorado to get Red wolves,” said Kobobel.
As with the Mexican Gray wolves, the Red wolves are critically endangered and belong to the federal government, so any enclosure built for these animals has special requirements, Kobobel said. “This is a historical event for Colorado and we are thrilled to be able to share them, once they arrive, with our visitors.” The center is fundraising for the $30,000 enclosure, to be built this summer. About half that had been raised as of February. To make a donation via PayPal, visit wolfeducation. org, or mail checks to: Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center, PO Box 713, Divide, CO 80814. The patio outside Russ’ Place in Divide is a great spot to enjoy a gourmet burger and ample sunshine.
As you can imagine, these beautiful animals are quite a draw. The center can get up to 300 visitors per day in the summer months, Kobobel said. But winter is also a great time to visit. Each pair of animals has a separate fenced enclosure of up to two acres, complete with their own dens. The animals get the best food, medicine and care possible, Kobobel said. “It’s our duty to give them the best life we can, because they didn’t choose to be here,” she said. “We are all about education, conservation and preservation.” A wolf in captivity can live 10-15 years, while a wolf in the wild might live 3-6 years, Kobobel said. “What sets us apart is the wolves can make a choice — do they want to come down to the front of the enclosure to see people? So it’s non-invasive in a sense. We don’t force them,” Kobobel said. The pairs of animals are rotated to different enclosures
from time to time to give them some variety. “Then they have doubled their area,” she said. “Enrichment is super important. The bigger the environment, the happier the animals will be.” She added, “We’re not a roadside zoo. This is a natural environment.” Kobobel opened the center in February 1993. “This is my third place. Third and final,” she said. “I started in Lake George at a center that burned in the Hayman Fire, then moved to Florissant.” But after her landlord had a change of heart, she found herself with lots of animals and no place to go. She found what she calls her “miracle piece” for sale. At the time it was a llama farm with no roads or running water, no home for her to live in. After several banks turned her down for a loan, she finally found one that believed in her mission. With a $425,000 loan and a huge leap of faith, she held
her first full moon tour at the property right away, raising about half her monthly payment. That’s when Kobobel said she knew the center was going to make it. All told, the property is about 70 acres, some of it steep and mountainous. The main portion is about half that, with the resident wolves occupying a total of about 15 acres, Kobobel said. A staff of 15 full- and part-time workers helps with tours, gift shop, animal feeding and upkeep. In the warmer months, internships are offered to students who want to pursue a career in veterinary science or a similar path. The center is a nonprofit, and is completely funded by donations and tour fees. To cap off your tour, take a walk through the well-stocked gift shop for a souvenir or two. After spending the day with these meat-eaters, your belly will be rumbling. Located just behind the Venture Foods building in Divide is the un-
assuming Russ’ Place, where a fantastic burger or cheesesteak can be had. A plain burger is $8.99, but consider a specialty burger or one of the creative daily specials ($14.99). Have a seat on the sunny patio or inside in the casual dining area. It’s the kind of place that families with young kids will stop for lunch or dinner, and locals will gather for a draft beer to watch sports at the bar. Not to be missed is the nearby Paradox Beer Company, known for its variety of beers, including diverse flavors of sours. Stop in the brewpub and grab a crowler to go. The beer menu is constantly changing, so prepare to be surprised and delighted — or check the website first, paradoxbeercompany.com. There’s much more to the small town of Divide than meets the eye. Seek out some of the off-the-beaten path attractions for a truly memorable Teller County experience. TELLER COUNTY GUIDE | Wednesday, March 2, 2022

Spending a pleasurable, relaxing day in this hilly valley is a cinch, and there are hidden gems galore. Breakfast, brunch or lunch at the historic Pantry restaurant (6980 Lake St.) is the first item on the agenda when visiting GMF. If weather permits, cozy up with your pooch outside either in the front garden or on the creekside patio for the best comfort food around. The Pantry started out as a bakery in the 1950s, added a dining room in the 1970s, and has remained the go-to community hub for over 60 years. Load up on omelets smothered in Chef Dave’s famous Rocky Mountain hot chili, eggs Benedict, home-baked cinnamon roll French toast, or fluffy pancakes. SEE PAGE 29

The Blue Moose in Green Mountain Falls is the place to go for brews, pizza and appetizers.
A day at GMF is not complete without a stroll around Gazebo Lake, or a full-out hike for waterfall viewing. The historic gazebo, built in 1888, is a local landmark located on a tiny island accessible by a lovely wooden footbridge. Explore the walking trail that encir-
cles the lake and try your luck fishing. Take a peek into the old land office along the trail, where in days-gone-by salesmen would encourage visiting tourists to buy a local building lot. Purchasers of these lots passed them on to future generations, leading to strong
family ties that endure today. It’s easy to see why visitors started eagerly flocking to this scenic village in the late 1800s. Nate Scott, GMF town clerk/ treasurer, an avid hiker, recommends that visitors hit one of the nearby trails. He advises there is a suitable
hike for every age, fitness level and time commitment. Park in town (check the newly installed parking kiosks for parking fees), walk to one of the many trailheads, and meander up into the hills to view SEE PAGE 30

the stunning vistas, tumbling waterfalls and summer profusion of wildflowers. Leashed dogs are welcome on the trails, and poop-bag stations are strategically placed around town. Scott suggests the Mount Dewey Trail for a short loop complete with spiritual platform for meditation. Kids typically enjoy the Thomas Trail/ Crystal Falls area as there are three waterfalls along the way. The Crystal Trail steeply climbs for a mile before joining the Ring the Peak Trail that leads to Crystal Reservoir. For hardy hikers, a favorite is the Catamount Trail that climbs up to the Garden of Eden, a spectacular wildflower meadow, and eventually connects to trails that circle North and South Catamount Reservoirs. Trail information is available at: bit. ly/333H7H0, and on the Hiking Project app. After a hike, there are plenty of adventures back in town. The town municipal pool, fed by natural spring water, provides a unique and welcome retreat for a soak and swim during the summer season. The Pool Park features a basketball court and a tennis/pickleball court. The unique new Fitness Court is not only a circuit training exercise gym, but also an art installation. No day is complete without a bit of shopping. The Painted Bear (10550 Ute Pass Ave.) offers a treasure trove of locally made arts and crafts, as well as an opportunity to tap into your inner artist by taking a class. Stones Bones and Wood (6970
Lake St.) is a gallery of oneof-a-kind pieces of art including handmade jewelry, woodturned bowls, pottery, textiles, and more all created by local artists. Colorado minerals such as Smoky Quartz, Amazonite, and Cripple Creek Turquoise are unique finds available for purchase. Electronic geeks will be delighted to browse in Mike’s Urban Electronics (6960 Lake St.) for everything related to electronic gear and repair. Now it’s time to quench a thirst and/or feed a growing appetite. The Blue Moose Tavern (10530 Ute Pass Ave.) is the local watering hole serving up some of the best brews Colorado has to offer, mountain style pizza, and a variety of tasty appetizers. The place for dinner is Mucky Duck Restaurant (10530 Ute Pass Ave.) for “fine dining with a casual Colorado mountain flair.” A cozy fireplace in the dining room, full bar and rooftop patio along with a tantalizing menu create gourmet dining in a relaxed atmosphere. The Green Box Arts Festival is gaining in popularity as Green Mountain Falls grows as an arts and culture destination. Brad Wann shares a moment with a donkey during the 90th annual Donkey Derby Days in Cripple Creek. The festival celebrates the heritage of donkeys who were used in mines during the Gold Rush and helped build Pikes Peak Highway and Ute Pass. Donkey Derby Days is one of the oldest and longest running festivals in Colorado.
This area offers breathtaking mountain vistas and scenery, historic hiking trails, antique shopping, historical museums, a glimpse into old and new mining activity and casinos — and
you may even cross paths with wildlife. It’s the ideal mountain getaway, with plenty to see and do, and you can decide what fits your fancy. In quaint downtown Victor,
you may just want to park and take a stroll. There are antique shops and the Victor Lowell Thomas Museum, an original 1899 building that houses artifacts, books, exhibits and pho-

One of the Cripple Creek donkeys rests underneath some aspen trees in a yard. Cripple Creek donkey royalty, descendents of the donkeys used in the mines during the Gold Rush, have the run of the town in Cripple Creek. The herd can be seen grazing on lawns or clip clopping across the old streets of the town from May to October. The donkeys are so beloved in the town that they’ve had a festival in their name for 90 years, Donkey Derby Days.
traveler Lowell Thomas. Just down the street, you’ll find the Gold Camp Bakery and Deli. They produce a wide selection of German and American baked goods and offer breakfast items, sandwiches, soup, or pot pie for lunch. Across the street is the famous Isis Theater. It was built in 1899, but burned down along with
most of town that year. It was rebuilt in 1904, and its stage has been used for vaudeville shows, plays and movies. There is a vast display of memorabilia, including vintage costumes, playbills, posters, theater curtains, and the original piano. There is plenty to see while the SEE PAGE 41

theater is in the process of being restored. Another place to check out is the Fortune Club Restaurant, offering good food surrounded by the rich history of the building dating back to 1896. They even have an old-fashioned soda fountain. Talk about nostalgia. The upstairs was part of the city’s red light district in the mining heyday, but the rooms are now being made into private dining rooms.
Another museum to visit is Victor’s Gold Camp Ag and Mining Museum — a rugged museum that is also a working machine shop, blacksmith shop and assay office. In front of the museum is a cute little art gallery with many pieces drawn, painted, and/or crafted items by local artisans. If you decide to make it an overnight, there are variety of hotels to choose from. The Victor Hotel on the corner of Fourth Street and Victor Avenue boasts
19th-century charm, 21st-century amenities, and it has an elevator and a restaurant and bar. If a nod to the macabre strikes you, check out the Black Monarch Hotel on the corner of Victor Avenue and Third Street. Black Monarch is a historical property modernized into a boutique hotel. Rooms are lavishly decorated and themed after some dark and mysterious characters. Included are Bela Lugosi’s Dracula Room and a room
dedicated to inventor/electrical engineer Nikola Tesla. Local lore attests that Tesla wired the town of Victor around 1899. The Best Little Boarding House in Victor is themed after female country singers, and each room is decorated with the singer in mind, such as Lynn Anderson, Tammy Wynette, the Carters, Patsy Cline, and of course, Dolly Parton. HISTORIC CRIPPLE CREEK & VICTOR Two scenic roads available from Victor and Cripple Creek that are more than worth mentioning are: Phantom Canyon Road, part of the Gold Belt Scenic Byway, which increases in elevation from 5,500 to 9,500 feet, has two tunnels and three elevated bridges; and Shelf Road, the most adventurous and rugged drive on the Gold Belt Scenic Byway, crossing over limestone cliffs with twists and turns through the area. The rough and mountainous road gets its name because it’s carved out of canyon wall and goes up more than 100 feet in some places. Vehicles with all-wheel drive or four-wheeldrive are probably best. About two miles outside of Victor on Highway 67 is the Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mine, owned and operated by Newmont Corp. The mine, formerly and historically the Cresson Mine, is an active gold mine. It is the richest gold mine in Colorado history and

are several restaurants and hotels as well. The Cripple Creek District Museum complex of five historic buildings includes the Midland Terminal Railway Depot, the Colorado Trading & Transfer, the Assay Office, and two miners’ cabins. Next
to the complex is Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad, which is a treat for railroad and history buffs, kids and the whole family. The 45-minute ride reveals scenic wonders around every curve as century-old steam locomotive transports you back to the gold mining days. As you drive in Cripple Creek, be on the lookout for the donkeys that wander the streets greeting visitors. The burros today are descendants of those brought to Cripple Creek in the 1890s to help carry mining equipment. The burros wander wherever they want and they love treats. If you want to feed them you are asked to use approved treats: carrots, apples, celery, and bananas — they love bananas. There is so much to explore, learn and experience in Victor and Cripple Creek that you may have to make a few trips to see and do everything the area has to offer.

For a no-stoplight town, Florissant has as much to offer as any place in Teller County. More than just a place to stop on U.S. 24 on the way to someplace else, a visitor can pretty much have it all right here. The Costello Street Coffee House is a good place to start with breakfast and a cup of coffee or tea — they’re known for their selection of teas served in beautiful teapots. On a cold winter day in February, Nikkiee Dopke was on duty. She’s a history buff, and loves the shop’s connection with Florissant founder James Costello. Built in 1885 as a private home, the shop retains that Victorian ambiance. Along with the coffee, the place specializes in pastries baked across the street at the Iron Tree Restaurant & Funky Town Brewery. bys such as biscuits and gravy. “Our most popular drinks are caramel apple chai and the lavender white and filbert mochas,” Dopke said. The next stop could be at Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument to view earthly treasures from approximately 34 million years ago. The monument’s main attractions are some of the biggest petrified tree stumps in the world, by diameter. “Most of these are petrified redwood trees and can be easily seen in our exhibit area right behind the visitor center,” said park ranger Jeff Wolin. Wolin recommends walking the half-mile Ponderosa Loop that features a petrified stump with a modern tree growing out of it. “The one-mile Petrified Forest Loop has more petrified stumps, including the
iconic Big Stump,” he added. For more fossil experiences, the Florissant Fossil Quarry, a 50-acre quarry owned by the Clare family, offers auxiliary education. The quarry is filled with plants and insects that are between 35 to 38 million years old. “There was a series of volcanoes that rained ash over Florissant Lake until eventually the lake was filled in with the mud and debris,” said Nancy Clare Anderson. To add to the experience, women might want to plan a stop in at Christi Schaefer’s The Hair Lounge at 8172 Teller County Road 1 after scheduling an appointment. By now, breakfast is a bygone and hunger pangs are active. The Thunderbird Inn is the kind of place that every small town needs. A combination restaurant and saloon where,

over the years, plenty of people have found camaraderie and a place to catch up on the latest. Right away, the visitor will know this place is special. “This is a community hub,” said Steven Siletti, who has worked at the Thunderbird for eight years, beginning when he was 17. “I grew up here,” he said. The most popular menu items are the hamburgers and wings, “crispy yet juicy,” Siletti said. And every Thursday, locals and visitors can count on open-mic night. And if the visitor is perplexed about recreation around these parts, Siletti knows where the best spots are for fishing, hiking and camping. “In Florissant, you can rise with the sun and when the sun goes down, come to the bar,” he said. For a little shopping, Florissant style, stop at Ginger Bru-
vold’s Outpost Feed and Ranch Supply store. A Florissant staple for 20 years, the store has feed, a garden center, pet supplies and a gift shop. “We have a little bit of everything,” Bruvold said. That “everything” includes CBD products made locally by Oyate Herbals. The shop is country charming, with a dog who enjoys naps, two cats with eagle eyes, and two rabbits that run around and basically ignore everybody but seem to have a good time. Food offerings are ample these days in Florissant, and that most certainly means a second day or two spent just enjoying gustatory excellence. Florissant entrepreneurs Jocelyn Albrizzi and Ross Derby own the coffee house as well as the Iron Tree across the street. SEE PAGE 48

Both are graduates of the Culinary Institute of America with additional degrees in business management and baking/pastry. Tim Carpenter, an employee, highlighted the most popular menus items: avocado fries, pork tacos, pig & fig flatbread, chicken/honey sandwich, crispy Brussel sprouts and PB& J with bacon. And of course, there are those luscious sweets, cheesecakes, cinnamon rolls, carrot cakes and breads. Florissant has another set of entrepreneurs, Larry Clark and Brigitte Strawmatt, who own the popular Florissant Mercantile/Log Cabin Liquor and Mountain Burger/Conoco station west on U.S. 24. From chit-chat with the locals, the mercantile is a smash hit that saves them a trip to cities east of Florissant. Along with necessary grocery items, the mercantile carries beef from the Willamette Grass Fed Farm in Oregon and Springside cheese curds from Wisconsin. And the produce is fresh and inviting, the tomatoes a treat for the eyes — ripe and fresh, even
in the middle of winter. Going through the store is like an inspiring let’s-cook adventure. The spices, for instance, artfully displayed, are bottled especially for the mercantile and each is priced at $4.99. Clark and Strawmatt credit their employees and customers for the store’s warm welcome into the community. At Mountain Burger, Adrienne Cunico, a graduate of the culinary school at the Art Institute of Colorado, has transformed the place from a convenient stop on U.S. 24 to one that is a destination for those who enjoy good food made with attention to detail. Under Cunico’s direction, the menu is expansive. The Philly cheesesteak and hamburger, each made with fresh beef, are the most popular items. But there’s also pizza, calzones, wings, prime rib sandwiches and plant-based burgers. There are many more opportunities in Florissant, but these are a just a few that could add a little boost to the regular tourism jaunt. Finding other places could be part of the adventure.
